From: jsimpson@mail03.mitre.org (Jamesetta Simpson)

Well I'm late for work - why!!!! Hey being an obsessed SG fan I had to
stay home to see if the new video would be shown at 8:00 EST.

WELL IT WAS!!!!!!

Being as I never really cared for concept type videos I wasn't sure I would
like this one. But I did.. The focal point for the video is the band
simply playing the song. The concept is Chris tied to the chair. But the
two are pull together nicely.. Chris does a nice job of acting (well
facial movements acting). The point of the video is - what is correct the
idea that home, parents, love and self are these nice images that we are
taught should be or is it the "Ugly Truth". It gives you the impression
that no matter what it really the truth you can change it. I also think
the end of the video is very symbolic as the shadow of Chris on the chair
forms a cross. Gives allot to think about.

I give it a 9 out of 10 points...

Ideally (well, in my little mind anyway!) the mosh pits could move
towards the sides or a way back from the stage so the people who really
want to SEE the band (how much of the show do you really see while
you're moshing??) could get near the front, dance around and watch the
band. (Not everyone, who doesn't mosh, sits in their seat like a
zombie!)

Okay...I'm wondering if there is an SG conspiracy out there.

Before I found Seth's website and joined SOMMS, I used the Excite search
engine(my favorite) to find SG stuff. The first 30 documents consisted of
web pages from fans and miscellaneous SG stuff. I was very pissed today
because I was looking for SG stuff using the same engine, and lo and
behold! It seems as if imusic is trying to get everyone to go their site!!
what they do is put in a fake link, for example, [SOUNDGARDEN(Hater)].
They always put the word "SOUNDGARDEN" in caps also, so that you will get
their entries first. What it is is a waste of web space. CORPORATE
FUCKERS!! You know that those true fans with web pages will be shown last,
the time when you get tired of searching through tens of entries. So far
this is only happening on Excite, but could probably happen on Magellan or
any other search engines. Any comments?

I'm a 29 year old female 5'6" tall, and I hear what your saying
Bonnie.

The individuals who think that moshing and/or crowed surfing:
1. is just part of the show.
2. they have never been hurt so it's Ok.
3. just killing time.
4. it's fun.
5. it's an energy release.
6. The music made me do it.

...These are the same individuals...

That drive their cars: fast, while drunk, and/or cut in
front of you, because...
1. It's the rule of the road
2. They have never been hurt
3. They are late
4. It's a rush.
5. The music made me do it.
6. The alcohol made me drive my car back home from the bar.

Being someone who suffered an accident while hiking (I fell
30ft from a leadge onto solid rock 5yrs ago) and has limitations
in both my left arm and leg, I could end up serioulsy hurt by moshers
and crowd surfers. I just wonder if people think about those people
in the audience who can't take the bashing because of physical
handicaps.

Hey, I almost lost my limbs once, not to mention my life, I'd
like to keep them and I don't buy the energy thing. It's a matter
of respect and restraint. There are ways to release your
energy in a peaceful considerate way and still have fun.

Subject: Moshing

Well, i'm of a mixed mind when it comes to moshing...i hate crowd surfers
because i'm 6'3" and they always end up kicking me in the head when i'm
interested in the show...but moshing...moshing is necessary...but its also
dangerous...i'm old enough to know better but i'm still to young to
care (hey, i'm in NC i can't help but hear country music--besides, all the
great musicians will tell you that there is something to be learned from
every type of music. ask SG...) But back to the point. I don't think i
could have kept my bodily functions in order at Helmet if it wasn't for
moshing. there was so much energy...just like at Lolla during SG. But i
had to watch sg the whole time and because of moshers i had left my
glasses elsewhere so i couldn't see as good as i would've liked. Moshing
took away from that, but in the same day i moshed with Rancid during the
Ramones, and that was a big high. Don't get me wrong, i never think that
pulling innocent bystanders into the pit is a good thing (unless they are
your friends and can take it), and i don't believe in trampling over
people. Moshing is much more benevolent in Southeastern VA. If someone
falls down, everyone stops until others help them to their feet. And the
mosh pits are never near the stage...the people who want a good view of
the band are completely safe. I miss that. Too bad SG is to big to play
at the Boathouse. Maybe Hampton Colliseum word work. Shroom, after Chris
wakes up, tell him to add that date to the tour. Jan 2, at Hampton
Colliseum..... ok, i'm done now. laters. -j

Well, it makes sense that the management and iMusic would want people
to visit the official site. That's why it's there, no? It would be
silly for the management to shell out money for a site if nobody
visits, and I'm positive that part of iMusic's contract (and actually,
part of any paid Web designer's contract) specifies that they have to
advertise it to the best of their ability.

Fortunately, advertising is not in my Unofficial Soundgarden Homepage
Contract. I had to take a pay cut, but it saves me some time.

All we're saying is put the pit in back. All you sexually frustrated

Anyway...thoughts on the latest video?? I am rather happy with it -- Chris is
a better actor now than he was in "Singles"!! I do think some of the reaction
shots are a bit contrived, in particular reactions to Hitler, Nixon, some
Mother scenes. But overall, I think it's a pretty damn good video. Kim's hair
in a ponytail!?!?!? Whazzup wit dat?! Another criticism is the blatant Christ
reference with Chris(t) "nailed" (tied) to the cross (chair). MTV thinks
we're all stupid and need an image pounded over the head to get it. My
question is, to you 600 members of my family, for those of you who have seen
"A Clockwork Orange", is it a direct lift from the movie, or different enough
to gain your respect? I have not myself seen the movie, so I don't rightly
know.

Subject: hater, assholes and the real other side of the moshing coin

this should be a happy, enthusiastic post about what a great time we all had
at the hater show last night. it's not.

all of us got there very very VERY early last night and staked out the front
of the stage -- and then spent the show fending off drunk assholes who took
advantage of the fact that it was mostly grrrls at the front of the stage
and spent the ENTIRE SHOW intentionally and deliberately "moshing" (read:
run full into us from as far back as they could go, repeatedly). who kept
yelling, 'ben, play something fast so these pussies in the front will get
out of the way'.

this wasn't moshing. i grew up in mosh pits -- black flag, the dead
kennedys, the circle jerks, the clash. NO ONE behaved like the assholes
last night did, or the *crowd* would throw them out, if the bouncers didn't
first. and if that didn't happen, the band would speak up. (but that's
another point i'll get to later) this was violence for violence's sake.
licence to kill, practically.

notice how all the pro-moshing posts are from guys? of course they are. no
one's going to be putting their hands all over you, or rubbing their dick up
against you. no one's saying, 'oh good, it's a girl. i can beat the shit
out of her and she'll move', which is what was happening last night.
misongystic assholes with small dicks. there was such hatred in their eyes
and such glee when they would grab us and we would react. these are the
kind of fuckheads who beat up their girlfriends. this one guy kept taunting
shroom over and over and over again to the point where i almost beat the
shit out of him. chris spent the show going back and forth along our line,
trying to keep everyone from getting the shit beat out of them. aaron had
to leave, i think because he probably would have killed someone. ryan
almost did. and the assholes knew exactly what they were doing. the only
way they can prove that they are men is to beat the shit out of someone in
public.

[*ahem* disclaimer--> i know not all men are like this. i know a great many
of you on this list are not like this. no one i know is like this. so you
walk around in this little bubble of equality and humanism, and then you run
into people like this. it's *1996* for christ's sake. you'd think we'd
have evolved beyond this... i guess not]

this was not about energetic expression of enjoying the music. this was
about 5 guys deciding that we didn't belong down front and them deciding to
beat the crap out of us. that is what the mosh pit these days is USUALLY
about. if you wanted to see energetic expression of enjoying the music, you
should have looked at us.

the evening began with some brainless fuck throwing shit at ben -- spitting,
lit cigarettes, lemons, ice. so, ben spit at him (cool, i hear you say. so
why did me and andrea and chris have to get spit on as well? i'm sorry, but
it is NOT AN HONOR). and then a few songs later, ben got tired of it and
jumped in the audience to go after the idiot.

cool, right?

no, because he (i mean *BEN*) fucking kicked *me* -- HARD -- in the nose and
lip when he did it. it's still swollen, my lip is still swollen, and i
couldn't breathe all night.

and to make matters worse, he didn't even fucking APOLOGIZE when he got back
onstage. i was sitting on the edge of the stage, badly shaken up, bruised
and crying -- and no one on that stage gave a damn. no one.

so why didn't i move, some of you probably are asking (aside from those of
you secretly glad that i got the shit beat out of me)?

because moving would have let the assholes win. i wanted to see that
fucking show! i had a 102.5 temperature all day yesterday, i didn't go to
work, and i dragged my sorry ass to the damn hater show because i've been
looking forward to it since they announced it. i waited there since 8pm and
i sat down front on the stage through some very sucky bands and i had EVERY
RIGHT TO BE THERE.

although, to tell you the truth, it was wasted. the whole thing was wasted
on me. they were great. they played really well. andrea said that it was
the best she had ever seen them. if soundgarden broke up they'd have
nothing to worry about. i stayed down front to take pictures though my
heart wasn't in it any longer, for seth and justin, mostly justin, who will
never get to see hater probably. i was also so shellshocked and the crowd
was so bad i wouldn't have known where to go, besides home.

i was angry at ben and matt for letting the crowd continue. no other club
in seattle would have permitted that. and ben fucking OWNS the ok! i was
angry at them for letting macho dickheads fuck with their loyal fans, even
if they happen to be women. i was angry at my own hypocricy for not moving,
for sitting through the show.

and now, without sounding overly dramatic, i don't know what to do. i am so
unbelievably disgusted at ben and matt's behavior that there's no way it
can't effect how i feel about soundgarden in future. i lost all respect for
them last night. this is how much they care about their fans? if so, i
really want nothing to do with this band. if eddie vedder can stop a
stadium of 50,000 people, they could have taken two fucking seconds to stop
the mess last night. andrea's seen them four times now and it has NEVER
been like this. it should never be like it was.

</negativity>

hanging out with everyone was fun last night. chris and i gave matt a copy
of our recently-acquired 1st generation temple of the dog live video and got
to talk to him about pearl jam. he actually answered a couple of really
vital and long unknown questions and was really nice about the whole thing.
(i'm going to write up what we found out and put it on my pearl jam page
first gang -- i'm sorry, i'm not going to waste it here. we've been waiting
for this for MONTHS, if not years ;-) ). i had a ramones button to give to
ben but i didn't have a good moment and i didn't want to bother him and now
quite frankly i'm glad i didn't because he doesn't fucking deserve it. real
punk rockers give a shit about what happens in the pit.

i know that dena talked to john mc bain and he specifically mentioned chris
mackenzie by name. ;-) i also suspect that both john and matt are big who
fans, because when matt asked us if we were going to watch hovercraft and
chris and i told him that we've seen them a zillion times, he asked us if it
was true that they opened for the who, which they did. they were really
bummed. ;-) when john was tuning later he started playing a little bit of
the 'overture' from tommy! it was great and i even yelled for them to play
a who song later, in one of the few calm and enjoyable moments during the
show. (chris yelled for 'sheena is a punk rocker' and ben gave him the
strangest look...)

but still... when i think about it it all makes me sick. this is the same
band that printed 'NO MOSHING OR CROWDSURFING' on the tickets for chicago.
it would have taken one word. one. this is a club that holds about 150-200
- -- you can't tell me they didn't see, VERY CLEARLY, exactly what was going
on. so either they didn't care... or they thought it was okay. and that's
something i'm going to have to think about very long and hard. it's
certainly going to affect how i act as a fan. i'll probably buy the
records, but they are in my eyes no longer worry of my extra money, devotion
and energy. i'm not going to be checking seth's web page for typos/errors
when i can't sleep at 3am (although i'd probably do it because i consider
seth a friend).

i know that shroom et al tried to stay after the show to give matt and ben
their somms shirts. i don't know what happened because we didn't stay.
andrea left as quickly as she could before i had a chance to remember that
it was THURSDAY and therefore no busses at 2am. chris and i ran outside and
managed to grab a cab. there was no way i was going to be able to stay
without confronting the guys about their behavior, and i didn't want to ruin
it for everyone else.

we are the kind of fans a band really WANTS at the end of the day and i'm
not so sure that soundgarden deserve us.

Hi!

'A Clockwork Orange' is made by Kubrick, Stanley in 1971.
This film is set on some futuristic vision of director.
It's famous for one of three future trilogy. One is '2001:A
Space Odyssey', 'Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to stop
worrying and love the bomb' are the rest of them.
I think it's pretty good movie.
Chris Cornell is strapped in some chair and set to watch
some screen in BUTOW music video. This situation is same
to 'Clockwork Orange'. Alex starring by Malcom McDowell is
obssesed in ultra violence but he caught and the government
make new treatment on him. Like showing how violnce bad is.

of the individual. However, there is the struggle between accepting
the limitation of not being able to rid oneself of these truths,
and yet wishing these truth didnt exsist. I've never seen it as
an interpretation of a struggle with his creative nature. Depression
or any mental conflict, tends to lend itself well to artistic
creativity,
but your idea is a interesting possibility.

Thanks for the polite response to my message.

Hey man I didn't mean to get ya all fired up . im just saying that the
front man of our favorite band thinks moshing is an important part of a
SG show . I have noticed over the last 10 years that the fans at SG
shows are alot wimper now ,than from the Ultramega age. and my guess why
that is becouse of the SG direction change(music wise) towards the more
"popy" sound ,geting away from the bone crushing riffs from there first
four albums. and I'm truely sorry that a lot of you can't handle the
front of the show ,in fact I can't handle being close to rail for very
long, but thats just old age for ya.

fopp

oh ya the reason the pit is up front is becouse it would be a long stage
dive if it were in the back.

What an ignoramus! Many of us were moshing and slamming and diving
while you were still in training pants. SG has not gotten "popy"
(that's poppy) nor their fans "wimper" (wimpier, is that what you
meant?, fool), but their (not "there" in this usage) music has evolved
and we've evolved, which someday, you may or may not do. It's called
maturity, not old-age. Maturity - wow, what a concept!

That really sux!! I was so looking forward to reading about the fab
time y'all had. THIS KIND OF SHIT HAS TO STOP!!!!

> this wasn't moshing. i grew up in mosh pits -- black flag, the dead
kennedys, the circle jerks, the clash. NO ONE behaved like the
assholes last night did, or the *crowd* would throw them out, if the
bouncers didn't first. and if that didn't happen, the band would
speak up.

or even jump in to assist in an out-of-control pit where someone was
in great peril. It is a crushing blow to discover that these people
we admire and devote so much time, money, energy, respect, etc. to
don't give a flying fuck about us.

The glee and hatred described in their eyes is truly frightening, and
the groping and fondling demeaning.

because moving would have let the assholes win. i wanted to see that
fucking show! and i had EVERY RIGHT TO BE THERE.

Damn right you did! This is what it has come to; if you are female
and wish to see a show which involves loud guitars, you need a
personal fucking bodyguard. But poor Caryn et al had a few guys
looking out for them and still. Women are NOT second class citizens,
and I don't want to hear shit like we know its coming or we want it
and deserve it because we're there and we should just go with it.
THAT'S WHAT THEY USED TO TELL RAPE VICTIMS!
We have every right to attend and more importantly ENJOY concerts!
I feel so sorry and sick for you guys.

Well, I invested the 1.5 hours it takes to download the JCP video tonight,
and all I can say is "Wow!" I've never seen it before. (Back in '91, I was
still real into Zeppelin, Floyd, and Rush. I hadn't "discovered" this new
generation of rock yet...) I have to admit, it was already my favorite SG
song, and the video only makes it more so.

So now I'm wondering... Geoff, where did you get this? Is it available on
video, or were you fortunate enough to have recorded it off the TV? Now
that I've seen the MPEG version, I must see the full size (and full framed)
TV version. Too bad MTV doesn't have the guts to play it.

In answer to your question:

"Why does Jeff Ament get credit for the title?"

It's because in the movie Singles, on the fictional CD for the fictional
group 'Citizen Dick', Jeff Ament created teh CD & CD cover and on teh CD he
made up asong called Spoonman.

This is what I believe is behind the credit. I read it somewhere years ago,
but I can't remember where now for sure.

I've been reading the moshing thread bits and I have this to add: it used to
be that at the front of the crowd, pressed against the stage, were tons and
tons of screaming, prostrated girls. Now, with moshing, I think it's
virtually impossible to get such a gathering chanting in front of the band. I
wonder if Soundgarden prefers to look at a bunch of whacked out angry men or
screaming girls?

I think FUGAZI handles it well: when they were here (in San Diego) for a show
last year, they refused to play until the crowd had stopped surfing and
pounding each other into the metal restraining fence. They would STOP playing
as soon as someone was hoisted above for a little surf fest. It took them
about 5-minutes to get their point across and it was a great, long show.
Frankly, it was a much more enjoyable show this way, e.g., without the
distraction and threat of the ever-violent, ever-enlarging pit.

At a Fishbone show, back when MOSHING was really SLAM DANCING, it was still a
more tolerable thing: the slamming generally wasn't right next to the stage.
The slamming was more central in the middle of the floor. (And, if you didn't
get too close to the guys with the razors in their hair, it was safer).

My final say, and then I'll end this, is just that no one is MORE ENTITLED
than anyone else to be in their space to hear and see the performance they
paid for. The aforementioned attitude, "if you can't handle it then go to the
back", suggests that physical size and/or interest in violent punching and
moshing entitles some concert goers to MORE space than other fans. What are
the options? A divided floor with a prescribed moshing section and an
outlined not-moshing section? The freedom of moshing is mutually exclusive
with my ideal version of concert freedom.
