Hello. I'm new here. I love Soundgarden. I have been a fan for
about 3 or 4 years now. I saw them for the first time this summer at
Lolla. They were great and I would love to see them again soon, but
unfortunately I'm not able to go to the concert in Chicago in nov.
but maybe they'll be around sometime soon again. I think that Louder
than Love is my favorite CD, but I love them all including their new
ones. Well Happy Halloween everyone!

In reference to the moshing question, I personally have never been injured
in one, I still get right up close to the stage ,hold my ground and enjoy
the show. If you know there's going to be moshing and you a scarety-cat
then too bad and stear clear 'cause some of us don't want to hear your
whining once you're in the middle of it.

I would just like to share my views on moshing at concerts. I have
been to many concerts and most of them I spent all my time in the
front. I've experienced the mosh pit many times and I'd have to say
that it's not so bad just as long as the people in there are willing
to help you out if you need it. Now this is comming from a 16 year old
small girl and I enjoy being up close to the performers. Crowd
surfing is another one of my favorites. And maybe becuz I'm such a
small girl, people treat me differently, I don't know, cuz I've never
been injured at a concert. So I guess it's different for everyone.

Subject: moshing.. you people are wrong

well, i've been to a shitload of concerts. And if it is general admission, i
get as close as i can.

Moshing. Moshing, in my opinion is not good. But I don't think its so bad. I
know there are concerts i have been to where the "pit" gets totally out of
hand, but i have been to other concerts where there was wave moshing, which is
much better in my opinion.

Here comes the flame material!!!
I would much rather have people moshing than fucking crowd surfing. Its easier
to enjoy a concert and keep an eye on the pit, than to try to watch out for
idiotic surfers swinging limbs every where. I've never been hurt in a pit, but
i've been kicked in the head lots of times.

And then there is the issue that Renee brought up. Girls crowdsurfing. I've
seen girls her age (16) try to surf. They end up getting thrown around like toy
dolls. They don't surf. They fly thru the air until they land on someone. I
really don't understand how anyone can enjoy the music if they are worried
about not hitting their head on the ground...

So, if you ever see me at a concert, and want me to twirl you around on top of
the crowd, i';ll grab something and jerk you down, or if you are close enough,
sling you into the security guys.

thank you,
Jeremy

I realized this morning that we have all missed the boat; since we
apparently neglected to send the boys from SG an appropriate Halloween

and perhaps we should discuss some appropriate Thanksgiving/Christmas

I haven't seen the video or stills of BUTOW, but I know what you mean
about Chris' lyrics, and I was glad to see your post. I've mentioned
several times that I see alot of frustration with the music business in
Chris' music. I think he feels that his creativity has been somewhat
stifled by the business, and I would say he would see this as painful,
or "torture". I think thats where the imagery comes from.

Here is the answer, more or less, to your little "moshing"
dilemma....."moshing" is the most played out phrase or action since the
fucking MACARENA.....the media makes enough people believe that doing it is
what's cool and "in", and the next thing you know, there's a bunch of first
time concert goers trying to think they're fitting in......moshing, the
stupid act of slamming into people, is a legitamate way to act at a
concert......like PANTERA, MARILYN MANSON, or something of the sort.....you
don't see people doing the running man at a country show, do you? or
breakdancing at a pearl jam concert, do you? there are musical genres that
envolk a certain method of dancing at a concert.....personally, i think ska
dancing is the most positive way to act at a fast paced show, for people ska
dancing in a circle don't slam into each other........they dance. and there
is a beat to music, which moshing does not inhibit. I will be dancing,
ska-style, that is, to ty cobb, and rusty cage, but i'll be on the rail
chillin' or smokiing during black hole sun.....get my drift? so moshing
isn't stupid, the football players and 12 year olds who do it at a
soundgarden show are.........GO SQUARE DANCE AT A DESCENDENTS CONCERT OR
SOMETHING...cause you people got it all mixed up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111

Sommsters,

Sorry about the distro, very bad judgement upon my part. It won't
happen again. Anyways, it was only one little thing more to delete.
Let me tell a story. A person goes to West Point. This person loves
soundgarden and soundgarden and all other great bands are suddenly taken
away. You ask yourself why? Well its because West Point sucks. How
can a school take away an art. Do you agree with me that music is an
art? Here, they believe that it is a privelege. Many people get conned
into things, but nothing this big; this being an education. An
education where you are told what to do and when to do it. Its not
college, its a prison. I thought. . .hmmmm.. .a full-ride to one of the
best colleges in the US. That is definately not true. True, it is
free, but my freedom has been taken, that is wrong. I would go home,
but there are problems such as: no car (because i totaled it before I
left), no real plan for reinstating myself into the real world. You are
probably saying to yourself, why is this guy telling us this shit? I am
telling it to you to let you know that the government is definately not
what it seems to be. Music is an art, and the government has violated
that. I know that you, being fellow soundgarden enthusiasts can agree
with me.

From: surfpunk@walrus.com
Subject: Re: moshing , personal space, etc...... going to the Nyc saturday show

I want to express some of my thoughts on moshing or more so about the
modern ie: 1988-1996 concert atmosphere Soundgarden included. I'm
going to see Soundgarden on this tour and as much as I am looking
forward to it I'm also dreading it . Loud intense and often angry rock
music can draw loud and angry people mostly yong men who as I see it
feel justified in there actions at these concerts by the music and
some of the lyrics. Now while I feel a lot intense emotion: anger and
transcendance in SG music I dont want to hurt anybody or myself and
yet at times I want to just let go into the wave of the music. Thats
what it's for for me to just move into it . But is that even possible
in the present day 1996 in the presense of others especiallly others
you don't know? I have wanted to believe that a communal experience
could be that joyful. I believe that in part that is the mission of
the musician on stage to lead in a kind of ritual experience of this
magnitude. But as I have said is it possible now. I believe that's
what moshing is and has attempted to do capture or recapture that
communal letting go of " personnal space " in the desire to become one
I mean why else go to a concert anyway? But I went to Lollapolooza
this summer and I was in the moshpit at first for Rancid and by the
time Soundgarden came on wanted no part of what the moshpit actually
has become an almost complete acting out of uncouncious and not so
unconscious rage at the self and others in some "social darwinian"
mode of which I try to get away from when I go to concerts. When
someone anyone speaks of "don't go in the pit if you can't take it "
it speaks loads about the person who said it and the culture as a
whole. That only the strong or (should I say powerful) and by that I
mean those capible and desirous to use both physical and mental
intimidation can get what they want in this world which in the context
of this experience means physical intimidation which leaves out
anybody who really can't or more importantly doesn't want to have
anything to do with this acting out but has no option if they want to
get close to the stage. So now because of this there is a parental
desire to end moshing ie: spontaneous emotional expression because
"We" can't control? ourselves. The contradictions are pretty obvious
when lack of control is the desire acted out with out much of and
consciouness of itself though. Very sad indeed . Well I dream of a
time when we can get together men and women big and small physically
strong and not physically strong and share a concert experience with
spontaneous emotional expression that can be both safe and ecstaticly
joyful. I am going to see Soundgarden in NYC at Roseland on Saturday
if you want to meet or whatever before during or after the show send
me so email before the show .

When you hear some idiot saying "yeah!! let's go down there and stomp
on some of them!!" (yes, I was at San Jose Lolla too and that's where I
heard this b.s.) it just reflects the stupidity of what some (not
all!!) of the pro-moshers/crowd surfers feel and act upon. I would love
to see SG up close some day but I know I never will because of these
few imbeciles. It's not worth a concussion or bruised body.
At sixteen I also fought for my place up front at a Who concert and
that was one of the most grueling but worthwhile experiences of my
life. I spent the night before in front of the L.A. coliseum and when
the gates opened I ran and plopped myself down front row. I maintained
second row position for most of the show only because of the kindness
and respect of the others around me. Of course this was before moshing
and crowd surfing but it was still body to body contact (for a good
part of the show my feet never touched the ground) and my friend and I
were the only two girls in the first five rows. It was scary, but these
guys who were much older, bigger, and stronger never once thought about
pushing us out, trampling on us, etc. Quite the opposite, if you fell,
they helped you up.
Ideally (well, in my little mind anyway!) the mosh pits could move
towards the sides or a way back from the stage so the people who really
want to SEE the band (how much of the show do you really see while
you're moshing??) could get near the front, dance around and watch the
band. (Not everyone, who doesn't mosh, sits in their seat like a
zombie!)
Anthony, hope to see you moshing at Henry J. Kaiser on December 5th,
and don't be surprised if you see some 30 year old woman, wearing her
Dena-made-SOMMS-t-shirt, up in the stands and acting the fool! Dana

Hey guys, happy halloween. I was a Evil Moon Goddess at school, but when 4
other guys and I went out trick or treating, I was none other than Susan
Silver. Funny, 4 of my friends where the boys of soundgarden. Including my
boyfriend who was Chris, because he's a spitting image of him...no kidding.

Anyway, I fill my face with candy when I say this, but I think Soundgarden
is one of the best halloween bands. Did you ever notice how in most of their
pictures, they have some orange to black tint?

On the subject of an unplugged, I think that I would rather watch the
unplugged than see another video....don't you. I didn't catch the BUTOW vid,
'cause I woke up too late, but they better show it on superrock soon, or I'll
just go crazy.

I want to go to Seattle too. Ok, well, don't overindulge in Soundgarden(ya

Hi everyone. Nice to see that the wacky technical glitches of somms are
over. Just wanted to say that I am really happy to see all of the posts
from the new people to somms. Keep 'em coming and if any of you have any
questions, the answers can be found at Seths Soundgarden site, the one
from which you all subscribed from...or if you can't find them there, ask
here.

I have a question. In "Spoonman", who sings the lines "All my friends are
brown and red..Beat the rythmn with their bones"..etc. I *should* know
this one but for the life of me, I can't come up with an answer. It is
Matt right? Another question..About this Dark Load thing, who are the other
members of it? Thanks.

it is, in fact, ben singing through some weird effect (no flames
here, caryn). I'm not sure why it isn't matt, since he used to do almost
all of the backup singing. maybe it is simply a reflection of ben's larger
role in the song-writing process (more songs, vocals on 'half', playing
guitar on an unkind, etc.) did someone report recently that at lolla ben
sang the line "happy birthday kim" during one of the parts? my other
question is: why does jeff ament get credit for the title of 'spoonman' in
the liner to superunk? wasn't artis already called the spoonman? maybe
it's just a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg, but I'd like
to iron it out for the next addition to the faq.

speaking of the faq, I'm sad to report that the full text version
will not be out in the next few days. I wanted to get it up on sgi.net at
the start of this month so those people who wanted to print it could do
so, but uni work has been breathing down my neck like a whip-cracking
demon (is there someone named seth here?). nevertheless, I will make sure
that it is part of v1.1, which all things considered should come out on or
about november 15.

in other ramblings, it appears that all my dreams have come true.
the big news is that soundgarden are yet again making their way down to
australia's sunny shores, and I will be waiting in line a number of hours
before the tickets go on sale here in brisbane. hopefully more dates will
be announced soon, and I'm crossing my fingers that the band does more
than the big day out date here in queensland. a show at festival hall
would suit me perfectly, but I think I'll be going to any show they
announce in my area, even if it is the stinky bdo festival (omit the 'd'
from the acronym and what do you get?). to those australian who are
interested, the line up (which till this point sucked in my estimation)
may now include soundgarden, and may also include tool and patti smith in
the coming weeks. thank you to mandy for all your information and cheery
tidings. it makes those three essays due on monday a little easier to
bear.

finally, to those of you in the seattle area who *aren't* going to
the hater show tonight (and if you aren't, why the hell aren't you?), I
read this morning that the presidents of the usa may be playing at moe's
mo'roc'n cafe tonight under the guise of the wallobees. the headliners are
80 proof, a covers band that jason finn sometimes plays with, so maybe the
rumour is true. I've heard most of the stuff from their upcoming album
(II), and it is great; look for it to be previewed tonight. if they play,
of course ;)

sounds like seattle is the place to be for all around coolness
and spookiness on halloween. now if only soundgarden were a *brisbane*
band...

just listening to the music and it was dull. i could just as easily
listen to the CD in my room. the reason i go to concerts is for the
energy live performances create.

I have a problem with this and a lot of other comments in support of
moshing. If it is a so-called release to the energy of the music, then
why do we see heavy, severe injury causing moshing going on when NO
FUCKING BAND OR LIVE MUSIC IS BEING PLAYED? Is the energy and
adrenaline so high that this must continue NON-STOP between bands?
Tell me why someone should have to go away and sit down where there
isn't even a show to be seen??????

I'm totally fed up with moshing and I am a 34 year old female who still
gets crushed but can take it like any man! No one has the right to
tell me to go sit in the back if I can't take getting beat up just to
see my favorite band. Moshers aren't watching *anything*, so I am
suggesting you go mosh in the back (if you must) where you can still
release your energy to the music (if that's what you're calling it)
since it's loud everywhere and leave the front view to those of us who
are there to appreciate the music, the band and the show.

My two cents for the moment...

So am I the only one who thinks Karaoke is an amazing song? I can't

in. In contrast, Bleed Together hasn't completely grown on me yet.
For those who have seen the video for Blow up, isn't it amazing? I
think we have another Black Hole Sun here...
Also, I know of at least 2 people who have downloaded the 17MB JCP video
off Seth's page. Has anybody else? If you have a 28.8, and you do it
at the right time, it only takes about 2 1/2 hours, but if you have a
14.4, your're looking at 5 hours. Any opinions on it? It is, in my
opinion, probably the best video of all time. It is visually, and
sonically of course, stunning. The mpeg on Seth's site is of pretty
good quality. (although I am biased, since I encoded it). Actually, I
would appreciate any feedback any of the mpeg's on Seth's site. I am
not an expert on mpeg, by any stretch. Any advice or opinions would be
cool. Thanks,
Geoff

Spoonman is one of the fake song titles that Jeff Ament made up for the

Makes perfect sense to me!!! Sitting in a balcony to the side and above a
pit I observed exactly what you are saying ,Bonnie. The people who were
doing the slamming, hurling themselves and over all being jerks weren't
paying a bit of attention to the band. And the other people could only pay
half attention because for their own safety they had to watch out for boots
to the head and being knocked down. I went to a show in 1982 that was
extermely crowded, hot and intense and the entire audience on the main floor
moved as one it one of my favorite concerts ever. There was a bond between
everyone that was the music and the way it made you want to move. But it
wasn't violent, no one got hurt. And it wasn't the biggest strongest and
most aggresive got control of the front of the stage like it has become. If
you want to have tetosteronefest do it in the back!!!
I am thinking at this moment somewhere in Seattle. Chris Cornell is
driving many many miles in the opposite direction of the OK!!!

It was "Happy Birthday Christopher" on Mr Cornell's birthday (although I
wasn't there - just what I heard). I've heard "kick that fucker in the head"
on a boot as well but generally Ben sticks to the lyrics Cornell penned.
Never mind the poetic license (c:

About "Spoonman": It was one the fake titles that Ament put on the Citizen
Dick demos for the Singles movie. Chris recorded these songs: "Flutter
Girl", "Nowhere But You" "Missing", "Spoonman" & "Seasons". blah blah blah -

 -sarcasm, yes-

On top of that American Recordings (Cash's label) sent out a flyer promoting
his record with an ancient (circa 1960s from what it seems) photo of Mr Cash
on stage, slumped over a guitar, sneering into the camera & offering the
cameraman the middle finger. Rather funny to see this... especially since it
was taken before the Stooges, the Pistols & the whole "giving the finger on
stage is cool" bit & that he IS a country & western-style (sorta) musician!

on a similar note, there is no way the song of the month for november
will be debuting before late today at the earliest, and probably not
until tomorrow. i would have liked to have had it ready for a 12am
