some guy just requested 'black hole sun' down here on jjj, and
what was interesting to me is that it was an edited version. from what I
remember, the section around the lead break/guitar bridge was shortened.
I'm pretty sure this didn't happen in the video version, but considering
that just about every other soundgarden single has been edited in some
fashion it isn't very surprising.

which brings me to 'blow up the outside world'. when it is aired
on the radio, is it edited in any way? I imagine that the end would have
to be tinkered with a little, just to get some airplay. it hasn't really
been played here in australia on the radio (at least not that I've heard),
so I don't know what version the stations here are playing. any answers?

Well, not too long ago I was bopping around Wembley Arena to those
mighty stalwarts of the grunge sound Pearl Jam.

For those of you who may or perhaps may not be interested......

IT WAS ABSOLUTELY BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!!!

I think it's safe to say that life doesn't get any better than
jumping around to Jeremy when the said band are a mere 20 yards
away.

Here's a list of what they played (In no particular order)

EVEN FLOW

JEREMY
OCEANS
PORCH
STATE OF LOVE AND TRUST

GO
ANIMAL
DAUGHTER
DISSIDENT
BLOOD
REARVIEWMIRROR
ELDERLY WOMAN..BLAH........SMALL TOWN

WHIPPING
CORDOROUY (If that's how you spell it)
BETTERMAN
IMMORTALITY

And a few others I can't remember.

Well, I have only two other goals in life left before I die

The former of which is probably harder to attain than the latter!

Subject: my two cents on moshing

Hi

Just thought I'd throw my comments on moshing into the discussion. I don't
like moshing either. Since this whole trend started, I never get to get up
close at shows anymore. It's just not worth risking personal injury. So,
eventhough some people think its a little totalitarian (sp?) to ban moshing,
I personally am happy about it. Getting "beaten up" is not my idea of fun.
Neither is having all those strangers invading my personal space - - but
that's another story ;-).

Hello all. Though I'm new to the digest, I'm definitely not new to SGdom. Is
anyone on the list going to the San Diego show? The '94 show was just
great... Though I think the venue is like being inside a tin can, but the
band is really so fine.... Rocket from the Crypt opening.... totally cool.

during soundgardens performance at san jose state's spartan stadium for
lollapolooza '96, chris cornell, in between songs, looked up at the seating
section closest to the stage and said to the people sitting down, "what's
the point of being so close to the stage if your not going to get hurt?"
this says two things; first, that soundgarden isn't against moshing like
i have been hearing people say, and two, mosh pits are just a part of all
concerts now a days with little anyone can do about it. the music of
the nineties is so energetic that concert goers need a way to release
this adrenaline flow; hence the mosh pit. i am really getting tired of
complainers!! i have been to concerts before where everybody stood around
just listening to the music and it was dull. i could just as easily
listen to the CD in my room. the reason i go to concerts is for the
energy live performances create. i don
i don't think that moshing takes away anything from the performance; if
anything it makes the show even better. i have been to alot of shows
where there were some heavy mosh pits, and i have seen people get hurt.
but the people who always get hurt are the ones who freak out once the
music starts. they end up hurting themselves. others who get hurt all
the time are little junior high kids who think they are able to handle
being up front for, lets say, a metallica show. before any show, i can
almost hand pick the people most likely to get hurt. so if you think
you can't handle the pit, and you know who you are, stay out of it!!
if you don't like mosh pits, go up and sit in the seats, or stand in the
back area where you can still see the band real good, and you don't have
to worry about people landing on your head. that's my two cents.

The truth is, he isn't being tortured. Not really anyway. I know it's
really hard to tell from the little image clips, but you know how there are
people in chairs sitting on either side of him? Well, they're
"scientists" or something, Chris is hooked up to all sorts of monitors and
machines that tell his heart rate, eye movement etc... On the screen
they're not always showing images of the band, there are images that go
titles like "love" "country" "mother" "father" "me". Some of the images
are a bit disturbing for some (one of the ones for love was a side view of
a naked couple going about their buisiness). It looks like those
experimenters are trying to judge Chris's reactions to all the different
images, if he has any at all. The only time he actually smiles is when the
chorus of the song goes "Blow up the outside....". Hope that helps!

Hello SOMMSters, I am new to the list. Just got online last week and this
is my first chance to write. I read someones mail that had talked about a
Soundgarden Unpluugged. I think it would be a great idea. I wish they
would do something like that because that is another of their musical
elements I would love seeing. I like it when bands do stuff like that. It
brings out the emotional side within themselves and their music. Granted,
they probably won't do something like that anytime soon, or ever for that
fact, but if they did, it would be awesome to here them play a couple of
covers of other people's music that are meant to be played acoustically. By
far, Chris has the most powerful voice of any singer and he channels it into
many emotions. Well, I'll stop taking up so much space for my first time.
Let me know what ya think and it's great to be here!!!! Hummer

P.S. For anyone going to the Chicago show, can you remember the song list
and post it. I would like to know what they are playing this time around,
because funds won't allow me to go, and they aren't stoppin' at Milwaukee!!!
Later.

I'm just as excited as anyone else about the BUTOW video. The clips on
Seth's site(http:/sgi.net/soundgarden/releases/vid-blowup.html) heighten
my excitement. It looks as if this is going to be one of their best videos
yet! But, because of the content of this video and its "cinematic
quality"(at least that's the way it looks), it may get overplayed like
Black Hole Sun. Watching this vid will probably make me get sick of BUTOW,
like what happened when BHS was overplayed, but most likely I'll flip the
channels once I see the video a few times.

totally right on the mark. i'm actually a little scared to go
fight for position. i was at a Foo Fighters concert last summer and
it was INSANE how the drunken frat boys were pushing around! at a FF
concert! so, please, don't hurt us 17 year old girls cause we love SG
just as much as the rest of you guys! I'm determined to get up front
and hopefully near center stage but i'm afraid of losing my friend to
the masses and getting landed on by some jackass's dr. martin 20
eyelet heel.

so yeah, it is getting a little way violent. especially the spinning
circular mini mosh pit type things. wow, they're really bad. getting
caught in or near one is NOT fun. it's too annoying when you have to
worry about fighting off people more than concentrating on music and
bands you came to hear/see.

This, quite obviously to me, is another one of Cornell's facetious
comments poking fun at the idiots who go to concerts to maul each other.
Although I agree that moshing is a unescapable fact of today's heavy
concerts, that does'nt reconsile the fact that people should be able to
get close to thier favorite bands without being injured. Your
philosophy of "if you can't handle it then go to the back" is exactly
the attitude people should *NOT* have. Personally, I am a rather big,
strong guy who can easily handle any of the crap people dish out in the
mosh pits, but what about the ladies (although I've seen some pretty
ruthless moshing ladies in my time) and smaller kids who have just as
much right to be up front as you or me? It's all just a matter of
decency and respect for others. There are even unwritten "Moshing
guidelines" for people who do decide to get in the action, that help
protect people.
The fact that these new age, red-neck, douche bag, tough guy wanna be's
and frat kids don't adhere to any sence of respect is what makes this
issue important. The last concert I went to, I had to stick a fist down
this drunken asshole's throat to keep him from annhialating this crying
girl next to me. I probably looked like just as much of a meat head by
doing this, but maybe this guy learned to gain some respect for people.
Keep in mind that if you don't have some consideration for people,
someone out there who's bigger than you might teach you how it feels
with a good pop to the nose and tell you to go sit in the back if you
can't handle it... and my use of 'you' is not meaning anyone in
particular... :) Later, Taylor

Oppps, I forgot to report about this. I got my copy Saturday morning.
Actually as I walked into work that morning my superior skipped to the
Darkload track. I said as I was rounding the counter, "That sounds JUST like
Kim Thayil of Soundgarden!" Chuck commenting on my ability to always amaze
him & said it was in fact Kim with Darkload.

The backing guitar rhythm feels a lot like "Blind Dogs" with all sorts of
swirling percussion & bass-lines hidden behind Kim's soloing. Often Kim's
line sounds like an extension of "New Damage"... in fact he bleeds out a few
of those cool ultra-high 'squeeks' that can be heard in the opening of "ND"
through out the song. Essentially I'd say this song is a good cross between
the occasional ambience found on the last few Soundgarden projects
("Applebite", "Jerry Garcia's Finger", etc) but with a definate "Kim"
hardness: "New Damage", "Beyond The Wheel", "Never The Machine Forever"-type
stuff.

All in all it's a sonicly (new word?) cool song but not really worth the
price of admission just for that one track. Pick it up used (tons of promos
are supposedly being released) unless you just really think you might be able
to get into the other songs on their (which are generally listenable but
lacking say a good surf stomper).

OK, it looks like a ton of you SOMMSters are interested in the collection so
let me tell you what's going on.......

It's going to take a couple of weeks. The #1 reason for that is because I'm
waiting to get the 3 copies of BUTOW singles I ordered. I want them on the
collection so it's not instantly dated in a month.

Second, I'm getting some help. There are a few songs I don't have and Ray,
in Gulfort MS has "generously" offered to help. So the collection should be
fairly extensive.

Plus, the list has become so big it's going to take a few tapes to get it all
on.

Anyway,

When I get it all done, I'll put out a BIG posting announcement with my
address on it and you guys can mail me your orders. I'll provide tapes and
stuff. With postage it should only be about $5 - $7.

So keep your eyes out, I promise I'll have them by X-mas so all your
