From: Stephanie Valahovic (former lurker)

After reading alot of the past posts on the BBS, and
reading some of the archives from the Mailing list about the
dark lyrics and the symbolism of the crucified jesus. Then
I looked at the stills of the 'BUTOW' video on Seths page,
and there it is again. Does anyone have any ideas on why
Chris uses the symoblism of being persecuted? If you have seen
the video or looked at the clips, what is your interpretation
of Chris' in the chair watching himself and his band on TV,
and at the same time being tortured in a business suite?

am going to their concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills, MI and I

appreciate them more than I did a few years ago. But after I see

I'll tell you about it after I see them.

     Greetings fellow SOMMSters,

Although I'm not a fan of moshing or crowd-surfing per se, and it
wouldn't bother me in the least if it was banned, it's "presence" at
the NYC LOLLA show, that I went to, did enhance the concert for me.
This is probably because it was my first direct experience with the
phenomenon, and it was novel. Before LOLLA I hadn't been to a concert
in a while and not one by a group who's music inspired it. Either that
or I was so far away from the stage that it had no impact on me. Be
that as it may, I went to LOLLA with my buddy Mike, specifically to
see SG. Just before they came on I said, "Lets get as close as we can,
I want to seem them up close." We worked our way to within about 30'
of the stage. There was a small mosh pit going on even though the band
had yet to appear. We stayed at the perimeter of the pit just
watching. All of a sudden SG came on. The crowd surged forward and at
the same time the pit expanded. We were now just barely inside it! I
wasn't scared, but I didn't intend to stay either. We pushed our way
back. All of a sudden a hole opened in the crowd. I jumped in,
thinking we were safe. All of a sudden, Mike yanked me back because he
realized that it was ANOTHER pit.

Anyway, the whole point to this is that, once we were semi-safely on
the edge of the pit; watching the shear anarchy of the pit in
conjunction with the force of SG's music and the occasional surfer
being passed overhead, was INTENSE! I had never seen raw energy like
that at a concert before. There is an element of danger in SG's music
alone, which is very seductive. The added danger of being physically
on the edge of the pit just added to it. At least that ONE time. I
have no need to repeat the experience. But for a while, I have to
     admit, it was cool.

This is by NO means an endorsement of moshing or crowd surfing. Just
     my own experience.

Subject: Well I had a dream the other night...

Actually I had two dreams, and they both had Soundgarden in them!
Am I lucky or what? The first one was last week after we were discussing an
Unplugged show. I dreamed that it really happened, and a bunch of us from
the list got to go. Pretty cool. They opened up with Searching with my
Good Eye Closed and it was one of the coolest things I ever heard (or
dreamed, I guess). After that the dream went off on a tangent and that was
that.
The second dream was a lot wierder and occured after I fell asleep
waiting for the damn BUTOW video. I dreamed that the video came on and in
my version, SG was playing the song at a dance in my old high school.
Really wierd, everyone was dressed up in their country/western gear
(northern redneck territory, if you may recall) and getting really rowdy.
The band just keeps playing like they're really trying to get this message
across, but only like six or seven people really even give a shit that they
are there. This seems to distress Chris quite a bit, but the wierdest is
yet to come. Right at the line: "Nothing seems to kill me, no matter how
hard I try." (Which comes in the third verse in my dream) it's not Chris
singing, but Kurt Cobain. Plus it was a real close up camera shot and he's
just kind of staring out at these idiots in the crowd. I was pretty
unnerved when I woke up, which was wierd because I was never really that
moved by the guy, but it was kind of eerie the way my subconscience (sp?)
set it up. But I digress. Freud would say that I dreamed this because they
had played a Nirvana video when I was sleeping by the TV.

Sorry for the ramblings, but I thought maybe someone might find it
interesting.

Hey listers!
I posted a few weeks ago about a pair of tix to SG's Dec. 1 show in LA at
Universal Amp. I still have those if anyone's interested. I'd really like to
get rid of them cause I can't go to that show (I'll be in Seattle!!!!:-) and
I finally got tix to the Dec. 2 show(and better seats at that!!). So e-mail
directly if you want one or both of the 12-1 tix.

About the whole female fan thing. It's been interesting reading everyone's
responses (yes, I've been lurking for a few weeks, shame on me!!) and I have
to say I really don't know about the aggression thing, I've never really
thought about it that way. Their music just makes me FEEL good. Ironic
considering the dark nature of a lot of the songs, I guess. But it sometimes
feels like they're speaking my mind before I even knew that's what I was
thinking. And I don't just mean the lyrics either (although they are
amazing!). It's the sounds, the arrangements, Kim's bad attitude, everything.
I've been a fan since LTL and I've seen them several times and my love this
band just continues to grow. I have several other female friends who are
really into them but not in the borderline obsessive way that I am. And
although I don't post much, I'm listening to you guys and I feel right at
home:-)

I've noticed a lot of people suggest Devo's "Girl U Want" as the best SG =

I guess that's why I'm not so keen on "Girl U Want". Yes, I'm old =

sweaty, smelly, muddy men who pushed, smashed, jumped, etc. themselves
all over me. I was quite near the front of the large crowd at
Lollapalooza this summer, and discovered that it's not about enjoying the
music and the experience for many of these people. It's how many people
they can hit and how crazy they can get. It kinda took away from the
experience when I had to divert my attention away from SG to these crazy
people who weren't even paying attention to the show. I can understand
getting into the music and getting a little excited, but let's not kill
anyone, okay?

PS I must add however that the though did occur to me that if I died
watching SG perform live it would probably be the best way to go . . .

You said that so beautifully.

On Wed. Oct. 16th, I was told I had to put my cat, Joey Ramone, to
sleep - my beloved, constant companion of 11 1/2 years. When I first
got sick, HE KNEW, even when my ex wouldn't believe me. Talk about
perfect love, no human will ever love me as perfectly, unconditionally
as the kitty I brought to the big bad city from the farm in the back
of my dad's pickup when he was so tiny his whole body could fit in the
palm of my hand.

As I held him until my ex arrived to say goodbye, I tried to sing him
that song (Say Hello...) through the tears, along with other dopey
little songs I'd make up and sing to him all the time. When I
returned home to this place that still seems like a tomb, I put the
TOTD CD on, and lit a candle for my baby's soul. Now I often cry at
this line, one of the most incredible imho, but when Chris cries out
"If somebody loved you and left you for dead" I lost it completely and
just bawled and curled up in a fetal position on the floor til I woke
up an hour or so later.

The emotion was already there granted, but god, I love music that
makes me FEEL something, that can evoke that intense of a response.
And that's what Chris's lyrics and music do to me. Thanks, UltraMega
Genius. And I'm lighting another candle for the best friemd I ever
had. I miss you Joey!

Wallowing in the blood and mud with all the other pigs, I am
