I was just reading through an article with the band from _making
music_ 1994 (thanks to uk deb and setheo), and part of it made me think of
that thread on chris' singing, and how he takes care of his voice. I know
some listers were pretty disparaging of how chris works in this regard, so
I hope this clears things up somewhat. btw, the article is *excellent*,
and I encourage everyone to read it in full. here is the excerpt:

Do you go through any particular rituals to keep your voice in
shape?

He laughs: "Smoke a lot, drink a lot. I used to do daily vocal
training, but for me it didn't work. I hate to say that in print and them
some kid will go and wreck his voice, but I did learn a lot from my
lessons. For the first couple of years though, I would learn the theory
and then it would all just go straight out of the window as soon as I got
on stage, I'd just start screaming again. Gradually though, it became
automatic, knowing the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. It
took a lot of years of experience to make my voice strong, and so now I
don't even need to warm up, I just do the soundcheck and then go sing."

"There was one time we did 18 shows in a row, so I've put my voice
through a lot of shit in the past and I think it's paid off."

in a lame attempt to begin some conversation - what do listers
feel is soundgarden's weirdest tune? I was considering that it might be
a two-horse race between the almost-ambient jerry garcia's finger and the
drone of motorcycle loop. but then exit stonehenge reared its odd looking
head :) I think in the end that the loop wins, simply because kim makes
his guitar sound like a motorcycle amongst the tweaking and tinking
drums/bass in the background. not to mention the backwards vocals at one
point.

btw, chris says something towards the end, but I can't get it all.
he says something like "_______, what are you doing?" I'm pretty sure it
isn't kim, but other than that...any ideas, fellow listers?

A few weeks ago, someone on the list (Vasant?) mentioned that Yodelling Pig
Records (or something like that) had two copies of SOMMS on hand. Well,
I've been pestering them ever since. Seems all I ever got was an answering
machine saying they'd get back to me. They finally did call back yesterday,
but they said they'd already sold both copies.

So... where did those copies go? Anyone out there in SOMMS land get one (or
both) from the Yodelling Pig guys?

I know this may seem a silly question, but what is
Mr. Godzilla in relation to sg?

Also, where can Seasons be found? ppl keep saying how
much they like it etc and I have never seen it anywhere -
it's driving me nuts!

Oh yeah, somebody was saying about UOK and screaming
life/fopp, I personally find UOK a little hard to listen
to because, it is far rawer than any of the other albums.

Screaming life/FOPP is however more like BMF (which I and
I think everyone else love) - it is worth getting alone for
Nothing To Say which I reckon is one of the most amazing sg
songs (the song is worthy of mucho praise).

Does anyone agree or am I completely off here?

Naaaa! You forget I'm really a Yankee (born and raised in Pennsylvania)
but I live in the southern state of Virginia - wait, wait, now I'm in the
northern part of Virginia you don't really get the southern thing going
until you reach the Tidewater area of Virginia. So I'm permitted to use

It's funny, 'cause I was on my way home a couple of weeks ago for a
resturant, and through my walkman, I heard the begining riff of Hands All
Over. Stupid me thought it was just the radio station announcing the
Soundgarden Shows. Then, halfway through it hit me. I was smilling from ear
to ear all the way home. Then I heard it a second time just 2 weeks ago. I
think it's cool that radio stations discover the "older" stuff. Anyone from
NJ or NY that remembers Q104.3, knows how they played old SG all the time,

Subject: Attention Chicago show-goers!!

WE ARE ACTUALLY GOING TO GET TO MEET THE BAND!!!

Yours truly just got a phone call from Silver Management regarding a
letter I wrote requesting some kind of recognition for the somms
convention meeting in Chicago! I couldn't believe it. I saw our message
machine blinking and my husband said, yeah there's some call, must be a
sales call or something (he didn't have a clue). When I listened to the
message I could have killed him. Of all times for him to not pick up the
phone. Anyway, after I stopped shaking I called back. Erin Haley, who
handles that stuff, wants to arrange for us to meet the band! It will
only be a "walk-through", not anything long unless the band decides to
hang out, but I told her we'd be thrilled with anything.

I need for everyone who is going to the Chicago show(s) to email me and
let me know what night you are going. Since I'm only going to the
Saturday show I will definitely want to arrange the meeting for then,
but who knows, maybe if there's enough people both nights she will
consider doing it Sunday too. I need this info as soon as possible so I
can get it to her and get things set up. I sent this to the list because
I don't have everyone's address who is going.

Well Shroom it looks like you were right. You said I would meet them
someday, and unless I meet an untimely death before Nov. 9, I really
will! God, please don't let this get screwed up somehow. I better go lie
down. Everyone get that info to me ASAP, OK?

To the rest of yas, in reaction to our dear shroomy's story, I must tell you
this.

1. My b'friend is going to be Chris for halloween, 'cuase he's says he
want's to be my baby instead of Chris. Hey, I must say, he doesn't have to
work hard. He just needs to spike up that hair, and grow some facial hair.

2. My parents think I'm totally weird 'cause I carry pictures of the guys in
my wallet, next to my identification card. so does everyone that asks me
"Who the hell is Chrissy?" I just pull out the pic(not the best of him, but
I have the best on my wall)and explain why he's my dear Chrissy. so far, 3
gals like him with the long hair, 4 didn't notice that the guy with the long
hair, and the guy with the short hair(before and after pictures)is the same
guy(nope there aren't 5 guys in the band.

3. so what if my room and my locker(my locker buddy is pissed 'cause of
this)is filled with soundgarden. 1 of my friends is just as bad wtih the
Monkeys, and
I know this girl who is obsessed with Korn. So, what's so bad?

Ok, enough parent grief, I have to come up with ideas on how to stop my
friend from jumping on the stage and molesting Chris.(poor Rachel) And marry
Chris(as my dumbass dad says----Who's that guy who looks like he's always
high..oh ya that Corn guy.)or my mom who practacly insulted him.

Get the same reaction from people who meet me. I think there is this
vision that people have that if you like a group like Soundgarden (aka
alternative, Seattle sounds) you should have baggy shorts, big boots, a
flannel shirt and most of your body part should be run through with little
silver rings.. Heavy burden to be normal looking.. But then what is
normal looking should be what you like not what the world deems it to be..

Ok, here's the latest word on the San Diego, Soundgarden Crosby Hall
ticket situation.
I just found out that tickets for the Crosby Hall show, still will not
be going on sale this weekend. Yeah, Yeah..I am baffled too! All anyone
at ticketbasterd can tell me is that they don't show them going on sale
this Saturday, and they won't know more until next Thursday. I hate
this...
I will try and keep anyone who cares, informed....

Subject: cover versions

I was just sitting in my room, listening to the SG version of "Girl U Want",
when my (somewhat ignorant) friend walked in and told me, that this
was the worst cover version of a song she had ever heard.
Coming from a Def Leppard fan, I naturally didn't take this seriously,
but it got me thinking...

SG has covered more songs than most bands I know, and I was
wondering what you guys thought the best cover versions are.
I don't know if this has ever been asked before, but since it hasn't in the
last few months, I'll give it a try.

I know a lot of you people have seen them live at least once and have some
of their cover versions as b-sides, so my two questions are:

1. Which is the best/worst cover version of a song SG has ever performed on
stage?
(eg. Waiting For the Sun, etc.)
2. Which is the best/worst cover version of a song SG has recorded?
    (eg. Come Together, etc.)

those who haven't seen them live, can ignore the first question.

I hope that at least some of you will reply :)

thankyou, thankyou, thankyou......

I read this on the official page... I love "A Clockwork Orange" - the
book is good too, I can't wait to see this fucking video...

October 24, 1996

"BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE WORLD" VIDEO PREMIERE

Soundgarden's "Blow Up The Outside World" video is tentatively scheduled
to premiere on MTV on Friday, November 1. Directed by Devo's Gerry
Casale, it was filmed over a two-day period on a soundstage at Los
Angeles' Occidental Studios. Inspired by Clockwork Orange, among the
more memorable images on the video are the shots of singer Chris Cornell
sitting strapped into an ominous-looking, chair-like contraption,
watching a performance video of the band, while creepy medical types
administer shocking images on the monitor. [Check out the pictures of
Chris in a suit on the Bulletin Board page - these shots were taken at
the video shoot.] "We anticipate this video to go into heavy roation
right away," a spokesperson for the band's management told iMusic. "MTV
is very excited about it."

Soundgarden hooked up with Casale after touring with Devo as part of
this year's Lollapalooza line-up. A spokesperson for Commotion Pictures,
the agency that represents Casale, said after Lollapalooza came to an
end, "He [Casale] got a call from the band saying they wanted him to
come up with a concept for their next video. He presented it and they
lovedit. And they love the video, too. Which is even better." Casale
co-founded Devo, along with Mark Mothersbaugh, anddirected all of the
band's videos, including the by-now legendary "Whip It" video. In recent
years, Casale has directed avariety of short projects - including the
Foo Fighters' "I'll Stick Around," and a video for the Toadies.

I'd like to make everyone aware that today's Eliza's birthday. She's um...
27 (I think) so everyone give her the appropriate number of spankings & light
enough candles for your fellow SOMMSter! We love ya (c:

I noticed on the page (seth's) that the "BUTOW" single will include the Moby
remix of "Dusty". This is for certain? I read in a Goldmine advert that
there is in fact 2 UK singles "each with different b-sides". Again I'm
guessing it's all those songs listed at iMusic (which I've yet to visit) &
the Moby remix.

- -waiting for the "BUTOW" vid premiere & the new singles but not waiting for
the band to come see him because they aren't- )c:

If you don't have an account, you can make a new one for free and then
login, and find Soundgarden on the list of chatrooms and go on in.

THE MEETING TIME FOR EVERY/ANY DAY YOU WANT TO COME IN WILL BE...DRUM
ROLL...10:00 EST TIME.
Hope to see a lot of people there. Again, this will the regular meeting time.

on top of it all....the Yankees won AGAIN.....i am a die-hard fan and
this makes this day truly mind boggling (hey seth....go NY!)

i have to say that i am truly emotional about meeting SG in
Chicago....call me an emotional pathetic sap, but I am in tears!! The
band has meant so much to me for the past 8 years and has helped me
thru (little do they know!) so many rough times....i cannot even
fathom meeting them FINALLY....

and i am going to meet so many wonderful people that i feel i have
known all my life...and that is partially why i am so
emotional........THANK YOU SETH - i am just so glad i joined this
thing or this would not be happening and i would not have so many new
wonderful people in my life who i relate to so well....

o.k., E.R. is on TV and i feel like i need to go there and get some
CPR..

yeah, female fans are cool and all... as long as they aren't "whoo
girls"... and as for DeeDee, she looks pretty normal.. FOR A 27-28 YEAR
OLD SEPULTURA FAN!

ok, soundgarden content. When DotU was released, i tabbed it "album of
the year"... well, there is a new winner. and it is .... <insert drum
roll> TOOL w/ "AENEMA." This album rocks, hands down.

Like i've said time and time again, Soundgarden's last two albums don't
seem to have the intensity that brought me to them. TOOL has kept and
buikt on the intensity from "undertow."

sabrina asked:

>1. Which is the best/worst cover version of a song SG has ever performed on

best - "Waiting For The Sun" - They do a great job with it & it's one of my
favorite Door's songs. If ever there was Doors tribute album & they recorded
this in the studio I'd list it as my favorite studio cover (probably).

worst - "Big Bottom" - A dumb song that truly exemplifies butt-rock /
cock-rock & a song I think Kiss would do. The few versions I've heard sound
good (performed well) but you can dress up an ox in a party dress but I doubt
it will get invited to the senior Prom. I know this was done as a joke-type
encore song but I can still not like it (c:

Then she asked:

>2. Which is the best/worst cover version of a song SG has recorded

worst - "Homicidal Suicidal" - Never liked it... no big deal.

best - "Into The Void" - It seems to be the only 'serious'-feeling studio
cover. Also the fact that they changed the lyrics to the Chief Sealth letter
to give the song a deeper meaning gives them extra bonus points. You can
also find some heavy rocking riffs in there. I've only heard a boot of this
song live (& a bad tape at that) but it still sounded quite good live.

I have copies of both! Motorvision is the original copy, however, Louder is a

However, if you'd like copies, I'd be glad to oblige!

At the CD store today I previewed Alice Cooper's "Last Temptation" to hear
how he handled Chris' "unholy Wars" & "Stolen Prayer".

THEY SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only redeeming quality was Chris singing back-up on "Stolen Prayer".

I hope SG puts out finished versions of both songs, and everything else on
SP for that matter. And I hope to God that Chris never lets somebody butcher
his songs like that anymore. His music is far to powerful and soulful for a
Cheeze factory like Alic Cooper to even attempt.

Whew.............. I feel better now!

Anyone else agree with me?
