Subject: You heard it here first! (possibly)

Just returned bleary eyed from the newsagent (it's 6.30am) with the latest
Kerrang and news of Soundgarden...

"Soundgarden are the latest band to play Monopoly for real, Messrs Cornell,
Thayil, Cameron and Shepherd having just invested in a new jazz venue, Local
121. The club is also being funded with help from several other local
investors, including the Sub Pop mainmen Jonathan Ponemen and Bruce Pavitt.
Described as 'a spine of jazz', the venue has Critters Buggin's manager as a
booker and aims to work in tandem with the Knitting Factory in New York, the
aim being to bring some of the East Coast's top talent over to this side of
the States."

So now we know the direction of Soundgarden's next album :-) and Shroom has
another place she will just have to visit next week!

Also...the UK release of BUTOW is now 4th November and anyone in Europe with
Sky One or Two can see them on tv on October 26th. Kerrang also reports
that SG are on The Hit Mix at 1.00pm (UK time) on Sky One and 11pm (UK time)
on Sky Two. So set your videos!

Subject: Duets

I don't know if this is an new topic, Seth, (or whether after six weeks of
posts I am still a newbie - what's the cut off date?) but can anyone imagine
Chris ever recording a duet? Who would it be and what song, and why?

Eddie Vedder once said he'd like to duet with Chris. An obvious choice, I
guess, but I don't know what they would sing.

For myself, I think Bonnie Raitt would be perfect, as she also has a very
sexy voice and singing style. Most of the stuff that has been written for
duets is pretty cheesy, so I think they would have to sing an as yet
unwritten Chris song.

Or what about Shroom and Chris?!!! Je T'aime Moi Non Plus, perhaps, complete
with..er..sound effects? Of course, Chris would probably want to take
advantage of the latest recording techniques so that he did his bit in
Seattle and Shroom did hers in Dallas. ;-)

BTW, can anyone tell me, who is Stephanie Barber who sings guest vocals on
Touch Me?

Finally, does anyone else out there besides me like the SG cover of Fopp?
It certainly gets me shaking my booty (when I've had a few drinks anyway!)
and I just love how Chris sings, "Fopped so hard that I lost my shoe".

funny you should bring this up, seth. i had an argument with someone
about possibility of an unplugged show just before i found out about
alice being on the show. i was quick to say that i would immediately
dispose of any and all sg albums if they decided to do that show...i
think that they would kick some ass, but i am pretty hesistant about the
reaction that this would get from the rest of the universe. this latest
album is already problematic enough for me because the new fans have
tuned into a different (IMO 'inferior' - oh, i can feel the flames
already) soundgarden than did i when i was turned on to them by 'slaves
and bulldozers' so many years ago. now what would it turn into? i don't
know, i wouldn't like it. now i guess i wouldn't throw away my SG (esp
now that i have SOMMS) but i don't think i would race out and buy this.
maybe if chris put out a solo project with polished versions of black
cat, flutter girl, and like suicide...that'd be cool. i think that he is
probably just sitting on a pile of material waiting to be released,
much like jerry cantrell. but i just don't think this show would 'lend
itself' or whatever to what i/we expect of soundgarden. funny, i usually
don't give a shit what others think (such as what my neighbor might think
of the volume of my trees' album right about now) but i get the sense
that i am not alone in my protectiveness of "our band."

Believe it or not, Kim has given sex advice! There's apparently some book
published in the US (where else?:->)where rock stars give their advice on
sexual matters and Kim was mentioned as a contributor. God knows what he
wrote, but I bet it will be tongue in cheek! (no pun intended, honest)

In a Melody Maker interview in '92, when asked if BMF is a record you can
have sex to without causing permanent injuries, Kim sez:

" I think it's a strictly shaggable record for the more athletic and
creative. That's what Soundgarden is all about; it makes people go, 'I
really want to to this, but I have absolutely no idea how, it's 69 minus 32
and page 17 of the Kama Sutra...' "

BTW, Toni, I don't think Chris would give those teenage boys the answer
they'd really want ie 'Go for it, kid!'

1)I think they *could* do Unplugged but I don't think they *would* do one.
They have said in the past that they don't think their songs would translate
into acoustic versions,
but then we've heard Like Suicide, Mind Riot and Black Hole Sun that way.

2) I would love it if they did - but I would love it if they were on TV more
often, full stop.

3) Set list - the three above mentioned tracks, of course. FOBD is another
obvious one.
Dusty's another. But I think they are inventive enough and adventurous
enough musically to make a success of any of their songs, although I suppose
it might be weighted a bit towards Chris' contribtions. I think they would
definitely set out to surprise!

Following on from Taylor's thread about the lack of female Soundgarden fans,
can Seth tell us what percentage of somms members are female? It seems to
me that a lot of the regular posts are from women

Eliza
Toni
Deb Servey
Caryn
Sabrina
Dee Dee
Shroom
Kathie
Jamie
Monnica
Roseemist (?)
ME!!!

to name but a few!(Sorry if I've missed anyone).

I certainly didn't get into Soundgarden through my partner - he got into
them through me! There's also quite a few of us in our thirties and forties.
Maybe that's something to do with our strong aggressive personalities!!:-)

Soundgarden themselves seem to think their fan base is 60/40 in terms of
male/female and that they don't appeal to 'girls' or 'housewives'. Hey
Chris, Kim, Ben and Matt, not all teenaged girls are into Bon Jovi and Take
That and not all older women are into Michael Bolton! And Ms Silver is 37/38

I went to see Soundgarden here in Germany at Hugonottenhalle 03 October
1996. I must say perhaps it's cause I'm an old fart (24) I just could
not get in to a concert that most of the *&ucking German KIDS pushed so
hard and did such stupid shit that I went out in to the hallway and
listened rather than stay up front 3 feet from Chris and Ben because had
I stayed I would have seriously hurt someone. I was just about to knock
my first Kraut out when Chris said hi to me and I yelled hi back and
life was grand again. I left for the hallway. I suppose concerts are
pretty much like that everywhere, but next time I want to go see them
I'll wait for someplace with assigned seats. Hugonottenhalle was so
damn small comfortably it could fit 50, but there was about 300 people
in this one %^cking room. I don't even know why they chose to have it
in such a small place when they could have easily sold out a way bigger
place. I'll probably get a lot of flack for this letter but I don't
give a shit. The atmosphere, people, lack of room, and just general
rudeness left me with a great big desire to never, ever go see a
Soundgarden concert or any other concert for that matter. Overall they
kinda rocked, Chris really did, Ben looked stoned out of his gourd. By
the way "Black Hole Sun" does not sound great acoustically. I hurt for
Chris when the band left off and he attempted that song. One great
highlight of the concert was their intro bands. Moby was excellent,
Eleven and Sponge kinda bit. Any way, Tchuss for now from Groovy ol'
Deutscheland. Love Soundgarden, the concert Sucked. By the way I am
American and do know what the hell I'm talking about. A lot of
foreigners like the ripping chords and awesome vocals, but somehow they
loose out a lot on the meaning and the feelings that go with the music
so that's why they thrashed around and acted stupid so much. They look
at a lot of American videos and they try to act and dress like us, but
the effect the accomplish is kinda warped. (Think Bob Dole dressed
like Super Fly) (UHHGG)
Peace, love, and hair grease
Tallen
P.S. I'm female and I got into Soundgarden because a lot of my male
friends listened. I got rid of these male friends, but Soundgarden
stayed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jason the back-up *GUITARIST* for Nirvana?
Dale Crover and Chad Channing both drummed in early Nirvana, but I'm pretty
sure that wasn't Jason's post. I'm fairly sure he's credited with rhythm
guitar on some Nirvana release, 'Bleach' maybe? I'm sure there are four

Subject: SG Going Acoutic...
From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 <bcheyney@cs.strath.ac.uk>

I think it's a pretty cool idea, but I can't see it happening... I don't know
why but when I think of SG going unplugged I get contrasting views of a
sell-out 'trad' unplugged and a total 'fuck em all' preformance which defies
the usual unplugged cliches. If the guys DID do a performance I can't help
but think it would be something special - they should use the performance to
fuck with MTV conventions - I can see an inspired concert! But then again
going unplugged is all the rage just now, fortunately it works for most band
- - AIC and Nirvana in particular, but SG are very much their own band.

It's hard to think about, SG are so powerful when they rip into something like
JCP live, or Full On Kevins Mom, but also capture a different raw emotion on
stuff like Mind Riot or Stolen Prayers...

It could be huge, but then again...

As for a set-list, I have to mostly agree with lance (?) who posted a list
yesterday. I wouldn't like to see SG cover any Nirvana though, it's too
overdone just now... if anything I'd love to see a cover of 'Cloe
Dancer/Crown of Thorns' or 'Man of Golden Words'. And some Temple of the Dog
covers would be great - 'All Night Thing' would be a great mellow set
closer... and they could do 'Stolen Prayers'... ... and 'Seasons'... ...
.. .

This acoustic thread is a pretty hard subject to comment on - it's doing my
fucking head in! I'm too full of contradictions!

Heheheh... that's the line that SHOULD have been in PN. Anyway, I
hadn't posted in a few days, so I thought I'd check in. Guess what kiddies?
I leave for Seattle in exactly 11 hours! Go me! I'm FINALLY on my way to
the promised land! And (of course) I'm going to be imagining rock stars in
EVERY corner. Heheheheh... ;-) I'll keep my eyes open for silver Porsches
and red cargo vans. And don't worry... if I spot anything interesting, you
people will be the first to find out. I'll be carrying my computer with me
EVERYWHERE. Heheheh... ;-)
Oh yeah, I wanted to tell you people the latest
parental/Soundgarden/insult thing to have happened. Yesterday I went with my
parents to the mall for the first time in three years. <shudder> They had
offered to be so kind as to pick me up a few things for my trip. And of
course I got the whole "We're the best parents in the whole world, and you
should get down on your knees every hour and thank God that you were born to
us. Say that we're the best parents in the world. Say it again. Heheheh...
it's fun to have parental power." speech. Jeez, and you people wonder just
WHY I'm twisted. Anyway, I had stopped in a Halloween store to check out the
costume stuff, and what's the first thing my padre grabbed? This caveman
looking mask thingy with lots of spiky longish hair and facial fuzzies. I
*KNEW* what was coming as soon as he picked it up. He snickers, holds the
mask high above his head, and yells across the store to me "HEY SHROOMY!! IS
THIS WHO I THINK IT IS??" I CRINGE and try to make myself invisible. I
would have left the store, but I was in the back... and Padre was blocking
the exit. He spots me trying to hide, and yells "ISN'T THIS THAT HAIRBALL
THAT YOU'RE SO IN LOVE WITH, SHROOMY? THAT SOUNDGARDEN GUY?" Of course, by
now EVERYONE in the store is staring at both Padre and I. I finally run over
to him and try to grab the mask. He waves it around with this completely
EVIL grin on his face, and KEEPS yelling (even though I'm right in front of
him) "WHAT'S THAT SOUNDGARDEN GUYS NAME?? ISN'T IT CHRIS CORNBALL?? YEAH,
ISN'T THIS THAT CHRIS CORNBALL FROM SOUNDGARDEN THAT YOU'RE IN LOVE WITH?"
Oh please, just shoot me now. Put me out of my misery. AAAUUUGGHHH!! And
where is my mother during all this? Standing to the side, LAUGHING like this
was the funniest thing she's ever seen in her whole life. Finally I just ran
out of the store, and went to hide in the food court. They caught up with me
while I was trying to drown my sorrows in egg rolls and lemonade. And as
soon as I begin to gripe them out for embarrassing me, they start with the
"You can't be mad at us, we took you to the mall and bought you stuff. And
besides, we're your parents. We're entitled to a little fun for all the
years of trouble you gave us when you were a teenager. Don't think of this
as torture, think of it as retribution." spiel. WHAT TROUBLE?!? I was a
MODEL teenager! I never gave them a MOMENT of trouble in my LIFE!!! Anyway,
I just wanted to share that little moment with you people, as you guys are
the only ones who would understand. I REALLY want to know why my parents are
the ONLY people who can manage to embarrass me like that? AAAUUUUGGHHHHH!!
Heheheh... oh well... only 11 hours until I leave!!! YAAAAAAAY!!!

argh! we skipped fall and went directly into winter. ;-( and it's
fucking raining EVERY DAY, i suppose some of you are saying, 'of course it
is, it's seattle' but the truth is that it rains more in New York than it

regarding deborah's report of the guys buying into a bar with the sub pop

been talking about for a while now? i know that jonathan bought an old
building on capitol hill, near the comet/moe axis. this seems to be a
trend - mike mc cready recently partnered with pearl jam's manager, kelly
curtis (as well as someone else) to open a pool hall/restaurant called the
garage (also near the comet/moe axis). hell, if i was a rock star and got

        Hello Again!
Many thanks for the input regarding my Soundgarden Unplugged curiousities.
I guess I never really expected it to be something they would do, but hey,
it would be fun. Just for the record, no one really thought that it would
be a bad idea, so that's cool. Someone also mentioned that a SG unplugged
would stand to reason (within eMpTyV logic, anyway!) because of the previous
PJ, AIC, and Nirvana shows. There are other bands from that genre that I
would love to see do a show like that (SCREAMING TREES!!!!!
yesyesyes...please?), but most of them don't get very much, if any, air time
on that filthy station anyway, so that's out. Besides, I think that Seattle
is *untrendy* now, isn't it? God forbid that MTV do something daring and
break from this pop-radio mold that we seem to be stuck in. WHOA, I'd
better stop before I get agitated. <deep breath> Okay, that's better.

Maybe some humor would help. Here goes...Last week I was listening to DOTU
when my mom came home for lunch. When she walked in, Boot Camp was just
starting. After about a minute of this (BTW my mom is 42 and grooves on SG
and Nirvana in a big way) she looks at the stereo for a second, and then
looks at me and says,
"Since when do you listen to Pink Floyd?" I laughed my ass off. I guess
for not really knowing any better, it wasn't _that_ big of a motherly
misconception (it does kinda have that sound) but it was still pretty damn
funny the way she said it!

I've been in this exclusive club now for 3 days and it has suddenly
come to my attention that shroom is a freakin nut. That's so cool!
As for the unplugged, why the hell not, although I think MTV is shying
away from the over(their words not mine) Seattle scene. If you ask me it's not
over, just expanded to cover most of northwest Washington, and the rest of the
universe. But anyway, I thing they could put on a hell of an unplugged in two
ways. One: Make everything really dark and focus on slower, heavier, songs,
with a really dark background (Imean really dark, like one candle for each
member) and be kind of quiet. Or they could Two: take faster song and slow
the hell out of them. Like a slow, acoustic Rusty Cage. I know it sounds
weird at first, but think about what Nirvana did with Meat Puppets Lake of
Fire.
Mostly I agree with the set lists so far, but I would want to hear a
little Zero Chance, which isn't all that far off on DOTUS.
Well gotta go going to the Pumpkins in Ames(yes I'm from Iowa) tonight.

was "Girl U Want", "Come Together" (sg's versiion), "Into the Void

were some more. The day of Lolla in Rockingham, while i was driving out
of Raleigh towards Rockingham on old Highway 1, The NSCU station, WKNC
decided to have a lolla day and played a bunch of RAGE and then a bunch of
sg bsides. Unfortunately, WKNC (88.1) faded away before sg's set was

wow, i totally agree here on this one. and on the other comment
about the lack of female SG fans. well, there might be a lack, but i
personally don't think that it has anything to do with the band's
aggression or anything of that sort. most people just think of SG as
the "black hole sun" band, sadly!, but they do. so when i rant and
rave about how there's only 29 days until i see SG in philly
(!!!!!!!!), really none of my girl friends get it. so, but, since
that made no sense, i'll say this: i love the way SG sounds. they are
pure beauty to me, just what a band really should be in a sense of
chemistry and friendship (for lack of better descriptions at this
time). and i am totally into the lyrics that ALL of them write, not
just chris's. i love Kim's and matt's and ben's as well. they (SG)
make you think, they keep you on yr toes, wondering what this means
and that could stand for. wondering how in hell did chris get his
voice to do THAT! it's just one of the things that can hold my
attention longer than most other stuff. SG just intrigues me

I think Kim is capable of it. I just don't think his particular

Well, being a female I thought I would respond to the female SG fan
comment. I would have to say in describing myself I am far from
being overly outgoing. I've always been more reserved, quiet, more
of an observer than the actual go getter.........yet I love loud,
heavy, thick music. To me, SG is very passionate music--it's very
soulful and even though my meanings and interpretations maybe
different than others or what the band intended...it means a lot to
me personally. The music takes me away to wherever I want to be at
that moment (much better than a Calgon bath) the
lyrics....(sometimes I pay attention to them, sometimes I don't) are
just kind of like my tour guide on this journey the music is taking
me on. If I may quote our favorite band here "If this isn't making
sense, it doesn't make it lies....." and "First it steals your mind
and then it steals your soul." Amen to that! Wow. Okay. I guess I
kind of lied. I am a very kicked back, usually pretty mellow person,
but SG does get me going. Well, I gotta run.......I think I'm in need
of a little SG care... I.better go put in JCP, kick back and get
ready to be taken away! JEN

Oh, the luck of some people. I'm from Southern California, and I know I've
mentioned this before, but we lost our hard rock radio station more than a
year ago. I no longer get to hear Soundgarden songs that aren't mainstream
on commercial radio. I remember hearing Loud Love, Jesus Christ Pose and
Outshined, before SG got more mainstream with Superunknown. I think it's
amazing that you get to hear "Hands All Over" on the radio. I have the SG
CD's, but it does give me an unexplained feeling when a radio station I
like plays my favorite songs that no one else plays. That's what my old
radio station(KNAC 105.5) did for me. NO ONE ELSE on LA radio played
Metallica, Rollins Band, or hardcore Nirvana. I'm stuck with commericial
radio, until someone in LA comes up with a good radio station.

By the way, other artists who give me an "overwhelming feeling" when I hear
them on the radio are most new wave '80s bands, Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam,
Tool, Ambient artists with crazy technical creativity, A Tribe Called
Quest, and many other bands, too many to name as not to bore you all with
my list.

Yeah, it seems that way. It seems like a lot of females are into more
mellow bands like Smashing Pumpkins or The Cranberries. I don't want to
sound stereotyping, but that's just the way it seems. Now, there may be
some girls out there just recently getting into Soundgarden just because

sound like no one else. I'ts a wonder that there aren't too many SG clones

well, they *have* dueted... during lolla '92, eddie would often come out

chris would often return the favor during pj's set. every time it

I know it's a cliche saying, but I can't help it: HE'S SOOO CUTE!

Of all of the SG songs that I can hardly decipher, Never Named is a
straitforward song for me. This is how I interpret the lyrics:

NOW I'M BIG LIKE THE SKY
AND I'M DOWN SIZED INSIDE...
I'M JUST A BABY WHO LOOKS LIKE A BOY

Yeah, I feel like that too nowadays. I'm 19, legally an adult, but I still

AND I'LL KEEP HANGING FROM YOUR HAIR

Ah, I'm still blessed with being young. I want to do things in my life to

so call intelligence's. Of course my family has been considering having me
committed - especially after they learned of my Chicago and Christmas plans
hahahahaha. I'm really fine Mom I've been taking all of my medications -
got to get the " BUtOW" UK CD singles and vinyl 7" hahahaha!!!!

And to put the icing on the old (yep Toni I'm older than you ;-P) cake one
of the guards here at work just made his 10:00PM tour of a supportively
empty building only to find me and my sound blasting PC screaming and
singing alone with Soundgarden and Tonic... He wanted to know if I was
okay - Why sure haha!!!

Now about this females who like Soundgarden are out going thingy.. I want
you all to know I'm a respectable, shy, upper middle class (is that
politically correct any more), mature lady who loves her music loud, raw,
and poetic. Now ya all (that in my best southern accent) must excuse me
I'm going home - got the old maze gun in hand and heading out into the dark
of the night...

I think Soundgarden could do a great Unpluged show. They have said they
wouldn't do it but they may change their minds. It would mean another
Soundgarden release, that's always good.

you weren't ignored. I just haven't gotten around to replying to
	your query yet.

the correction (my thanks to all the people who pointed this one
out) will definitely be in the first update, which will hit the
	shelves around november 15.

	hope that helps.
