We seem to have a lull in list activity recently, so let me take this
opportunity to urge newcomers to start some discussion. Those of us
who've been on the list for more than a year are likely finding it
difficult to come up with topics we haven't heard before - I know I
certainly am. I know many of you joined the list and then saw a whole
bunch of flames and ont a lot of SG content, so it's up to you to
change that.

Surely some of you lurkers went to see Soundgarden in Europe, but we
only got a few reviews from list members so far; how was it? Tell us
everything. Tell us what we in the US can expect to see on the
setlist. Hell, tell us how many times Ben spit on the crowd, but say
*something*.

G'day...
I'm a relatively new SG fan and am hunting for info on a few things.
Firstly, was the CD+ released in Australia?? I've been searching in lots
of places for it but no-ones heard of it.
Also, will SG tour Australia in the forseeable future? They were supposed
to be touring here early '96 but nothing further has been said about it.

The CD+ is in Aust. I got mine from Skinnys in the city. Ask at the counter
there, I think you'll find they'll be most helpfully :) Still tho mine
doesn't work on my CD-ROM so it is a bit of a downer. And as for tour

Anyone heard BUTOW down here yet? Everyone in the US seems to have heard it
on the radio, not here yet. BIMH is getting a bit too much :)

Hi! I used to be a loveline listener. I stopped listening ever since Riki
Rachtman went off and got his own show on KLSX. Poorman was cool too. I
wanted to ask the same question--If SG have been on loveline, but I didn't
know who to ask.

Forgive me for assuming that you are a southern californian. If you're
not, and you get loveline broadcasted to your radio station in the US, I
can save you a few pennies and call KROQ(where loveline is based) and I'll
ask them. I very much doubt that SG have been on loveline. The most
convienient time for them to be on is when they tour here in LA. If no
plans are made, I'll bug the hell out of the KROQ staff!!

SOUNDGARDEN gig in Stockholm (Isstadion) 18/10/96

This was about the best concert I've seen!!!
Since the U.S. tour will start soon, I guess some of you who will see
them there are interested in the setlist etc.
I'll start with a list of the songs SOUNDGARDEN played (I hope it's
right - me and my friend agreed on these):

Badmotorfinger Searching With My Good Eye Closed
			Rusty Cage
			Outshined
			Slaves & Bulldozers
			Rusty Cage
			Jesus Christ Pose

Superunknown Spoonman
			My Wave
			Let Me Drown
			Black Hole Sun
			Fell On Black Days

Down On The Upside	Pretty Noose
			Dusty
			Never The Machine Forever
			Ty Cobb
			Blow Up The Outside World
			Burden In My Hand
			Boot Camp
			No Attention

Others: Helter Skelter
			+ another cover

I don't remember the exact order of the songs, but I'll give a few
comments on a few of them after saying a few things about the opening
acts:

We missed the first band on the bill (ELEVEN), but got there in time
to see MOBY hit the stage. MOBY and his band put on a good,
entertaining show - I don't remember the names of most songs but a few
of them were quite good. His album could be worth checking out - a lot
of punk songs mixed with slower (better) heavy ones. In 'Everytime You
Touch Me' MOBY thought he needed someone to dance with, so a girl from
the crowd got up on stage for a while (the vocalis/ guitarist MOBY
even switched with the drummer for a while so that he could dance with
her as well. They also played 'PARANOID', 'PURPLE HAZE' and a bit of
'ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS' which served as real crowd-pleasers.

Now for SOUNDGARDEN :
Of course, they kicked off the show with 'SPOONMAN' which by the way
is a great song to start a show with. The sound was good, Chris' voice
sounded great and it all looked very promising.'SEARCHING WITH...' was
among the first songs, and in the middle of it I got a bit
worried. Chris had some problem with his voice - me and my friend
looked at each other and feared for the rest of the show. After the
song we thought we had it confirmed, since Chris croaked/ whispered
'thanks a lot' before the band continued with 'PRETTY NOOSE' and
'DUSTY'. Now the voice was OK again, and I though I had imagined it
all (but hey - we both heard it right?).

They went on with a few songs off from the last three albums, among
others 'LET ME DROWN' and 'MY WAVE', both of them performed in
powerful versions that made me "re-discover" them. The only
disappointment in this part of the show was 'RUSTY CAGE' which was a
bit too fast for my taste - in my opinion that one could have been a
lot heavier (it sure is a great song!).

Just as on the Lollapalooza tour, Chris played 'BLACK HOLE SUN' on his
own, and I strongly disagree with some of the persons who reviewed the
gig in swedish press. This was a powerful version by Chris, and his
voice was just amazing (had we imagined the problems in
'SEARCHING...'?)!! (Why would SOUNDGARDEN do what 'everyone' expect
them to do, i.e. play a song like 'BLACK HOLE SUN' like the version
'everyone' has heard?) Anyway, the band continued with a few slower
tunes, like 'FELL ON BLACK DAYS' (which is one of my favorites on
Superunknown) and the cover 'HELTER SKELTER'. I think this was the
first time I heard the band play this song - at least I don't remember
having heard them play a cover song that suited them so well. It was a
slow "improvising-like" version that just blew me away.

After this, they played a few more songs from BMF and DOTU, and here
came the absolute peaks of the show. In 'OUTSHINED' SOUNDGARDEN was in
great form - they seemed to have a good time (playing around a lot on
stage), delivering a stunning version of one of the best songs on
BMF. We even got a few smiles from both Kim and Ben, who played like
gods together with Matt and Chris (the voice was more than OK
now...). I sure hope all of you will experience the band playing as
good as this. Other songs that's worth mentioning is 'BOOT CAMP'
(short but powerful), 'TY COBB' (sing-along on 'hard headed fuck you
all') and, of course, 'BURDEN IN MY HAND' (Great) + 'BLOW UP THE
OUTSIDE WORLD' (Almost as good as 'Outshined'!).

At the end of the show, the band brought the guitarist from MOBY's
band to play the second cover song of the night. At least I think it
was a cover, since I haven't heard it before - it was some kind of
punk song (perhaps someone can help me out here). The last song before
the band left the stage for the first time was 'SLAVES & BULLDOZERS'
(yes!), in which SOUNDGARDEN got into an extended jam-part that was
awesome!!!

'NO ATTENTION' was the first encore, followed by a real heavy version
of 'JESUS CHRIST POSE' (could it be played another way?). Matt did a
drum intro for this one, and when the crowd clapped along he seemed
very pleased being able to fool us all by making us loose the rythm.

Altogether, this was a wonderful show. The band was in good form, and
they played most of the best songs. Of course, there are a few I would
have liked them to play (Like Suicide, Rooom A Thousand Years Wide,
Overfloater). As you may have noticed, SOUNGARDEN didn't play any
songs from albums before BMF. I sure would've liked to hear at least
'Hands All Over', and 'Beyond The Wheel' wouldn't be too bad either.
The show was in my opinion GREAT, so to me that doesn't matter too
much...

Soundgarden on Loveline now that has interesting possibilities!! Mr
Thayil of course would be the prime choice for answering questions. His
"my dancing partner keeps throwing up" line on the DOTU pre-release radio
show is a classic! He could quote the Karma Sutra(not sure of the spelling
so please excuse my ingnorance) and Ben could demostrate the postions.
Being Ben is the most flexible man this side of Gumby. Oh right so it's a
radio show- Ben's great visuals would be lost. Chris could give the long
time martial advice but he could also handle the 16 year old who calls and
says; "There's this girl who likes me I mean really really likes me and she
keeps putting notes on my locker and telling me what a sexy body I have....
what do I do???" and of course Matt could handle the "Burden in my hand"
and the proper way to hold one's stick questions. I think they would be
fine informative and hilarious guests and would probably mess with some
young minds unmercifully!!!! toni
BTW: Loveline is syndicated we get it here in Chicago every night on Q101.

Nope. The band is opposed to having any more photographs of them taken
than is absolutely necessary (read: what the management and label
demand for publicity). Even people with photo passes are usually
forbidden to use flashes, which makes shooting the band live a real
pain in the ass. A photographer friend of mine recently shot the band
(specifically, Matt) during the show in Rotterdam; he was granted
permission to shoot from the stage, but was not allowed to use a
flash.

Of course, if you sneak a camera in and get some decent shots, I'd
love to put them on the Web page for all to see. :)

Ultramega OK is a superb album, though the actual recording and mix
aren't too hot. The album is worth it just for "Beyond The Wheel," but
throw in "Flower" and "Incessant Mace" and you can't go wrong. There
aren't any skippable songs on Ultra, in my opinion. And on an
Ultra-related tangent, if anyone hasn't picked up the "Flower" single,
do try to find it: "Toy Box" is an *amazing* b-side.

Ultra also has its share of jokes: "665" and "667," which skirt the
heavy metal tradition of 666, and which include lyrics and music
recorded both forwards and backwards (the lyrics recorded backwards
are the ultimate parody of all of those "hidden Satanic messages" -
Chris screams "I need you Santa baby") and "One Minute Of Silence"
(originally "Two Minutes of Silence," but they band eliminated Yoko
Ono's part), about which the band said:

Hiro: "We had a minute to fill on the record."

Chris: "We appreciated the Lennon arrangement so much."

Kim: "We thought it was so good, we could add a little
something to it. It's the heavy metal version."

Chris: "The real deciding factor was that we knew there
wouldn't be any publishing problems, because you
		can't copyright silence."

As for Screaming Life/Fopp, it doesn't hit me like Ultra and
Badmotorfinger do, so I don't listen to it all that often, but
"Nothing To Say" is one of those classic slow, heavy Soundgarden
tracks that I love.

I'LL GIVE THEM TO ANYONE ON THE LIST WHO WANTS THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!

***********FREE***********

In case there's a mad rush for these tickets, I'll do a contest or something
so I give them away fairly.

Any ideas how to do this Seth?

Lemme know by Saturday, October 26, 1996.

If none of the fellow listers want them, I'll sell them to someone here in
SLC.

as lee has already said, your best bet would be skinnys on
elizabeth street. they have had a couple of copies since it came out.
you could also look for it at rockinghorse records on adelaide street
(behind the counter they have a bunch of music-related multimedia stuff,
and I think I've seen _aits_ there too). the independent places are much
more likely to have it than the music pretenders like brashs and
chandlers. just make sure that you make the distinction that it is in fact
*not* an album. sometimes staff just need a little prodding :)

I was hoping that they would be announced as headliners for the
big day out (which would make them twice co-headliners; much like lolla),
but we get sepultura and the offspring instead :( but I still maintain
that soundgarden *will* come down here after january first. the u.s
domestic tour looks like it will end on december 11 in seattle, so after
the band spend christmas and new year's at home, they can complete their
world tour <crossed fingers> by doing the pacific rim, asia and little ol'
australia :)

this from addicted to noise -

gil kaufman reports: this much we know: sometime in the future
there will be a new album from the seattle supergroup mad season, whose
line-up in the past has included alice in chains singer layne staley,
pearl jam's mike mccready, and screaming trees' barrett martin. now,
here's where it gets a bit sticky. according to sources in the aic camp,
the instrumental tracks for the as-yet-untitled release have been laid
down, and as rumored, they are plentiful enough to be spread out over two
cd's. according to reports, there is a possibility that staley would
handle vocals on the first disc with the screaming trees' mark lanegan
taking over on the second. however, according to management, neither
singers have opened their mouths just yet and, as far as we can tell, no
lyrics have been penned.

(ok, me again) now this sounds cool. it sounds a little iffy, and
even though the managements involved won't talk of the vocal situation
they *do* admit to the instrumental stuff, so maybe it will come around.
keep in mind that atn reported a couple of months ago that members of
soundgarden took part in these sessions. whether *that* is true is even
more debatable; it is always useful to keep the salt shaker handy after
reading music news of the world on atn (anyone remember their report that
matt did a drum track for the _beautiful girls_ soundtrack?).

about three months ago, I would have said there was no way that
ben, matt, kim or chris could have been doing any extra curricular work -
the release of dotu and all the other stuff that comes with the release of
a record would have burned up too much of their time. but we now have
confirmation from matt on upcoming records from both hater and the
wellwater conspiracy (in addition to the contribution by kim to the smell
the fuzz compilation) so I guess anything is possible. maybe some of this
stuff has been squirreled away over the last year or two? I suppose that
it wouldn't be hard to do, since most of the hater and wwc material would
have been recorded in either matt or ben's basement. everyone just keep
their ears to the ground and we'll be sure to come up with something :)

btw, did you know that 'half' is the only soundgarden song
which does not include chris at all (on vocals or guitar)?

don't get too riled up just yet, lance. those two songs ('ocean
fronts' and 'cleaning my gun') haven't been released in any commercial
format yet. I say yet because my guess is that one or two of them may end
up on the butow single, or possibly the single that comes after it (zero
chance?).

as for how the imusic guys came up with them, I'm not sure. I
wouldn't think that chris would be generous with his lyric books,
especially to a site that I don't think he has much to do with. ocean
fronts is definitely the cooler of the two on paper. the lyrics are
mysterious (dare I say mystical in a led zep sort of way?), and kim wrote
the music; which makes me think there must be a tape of this somewhere,
since it is at such an advanced state of completion. I personally like
the songs where kim and chris collaborate, like on hands all over and kyle
petty. if this song is released, I think it'll be a good'un.

cleaning my gun, however, looks a bit dinky. I'd be happy to be
proved wrong, but the lyrics sound too forced, not to mention *very*
different to what chris normally writes. let's face it, the chorus is a
long way away from cool obtuse-ness and metaphor of seasons or swmgec. I
can imagine chris strumming this on his porch out in the everglades, the
moonlight glinting off the spoon around his neck, and it makes me cringe a
bit. like dusty but more so. I hope I'm wrong.

just as an interesting aside, can anyone remember what was stolen
from kim's room? I was thinking just the other night that it could be a
replay of what happened to eddie vedder in europe (?) somewhere, and that
kim may have lost demo tapes or music books to the rotten scum that rifled
through his stuff. any clues?

Hey listers,

Me & a friend of mine want to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to see the
Gods of rock play to a home town crowd. If there is any way to get tix, I'll
gladly send the cash ASAP. We'd kinda like to know soon though, so we can get
a cheaper airfare.

If anyone can help out we'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanx,

Weill I guess it is really a couple of questions.

First: Anyone know when exactly tickets go on sale? Noone at any
Ticketmaster seems to know anything (duh, big surprise).

Second: Who else is planning on attending the Vancouver show?
