I've got that Truly CD as well. It's pretty damn good. Very weird. It
reminded me of the music in 60s TV series and films where somebody is
being drugged up in places. I agree, Ben's influence on Soundgarden has
been a blessing, and has certainly brought out a more eclectic side to
the band which was not really reflected in the Hiro era, but he
contributed with strange weirdness (some of which is in Truly now), which
shows how each individual member of a band contributes towards making
that band a whole...

Subject: SG tribute bands, or SG cover songs

Hi sommsters||||||

First of all, I'm feelin' very shitty that no one could help me about the SG co
ncert (venues, ticket prices, etc.) in Coppenhage, Stockholm or Oslo. (I'm very
very sad and I'm down on the upside-downside, I will comment my story in one o
f the next digest - watch it|||)

So, about the subject:
   1. My band called bLUNTEd (my other band, called after@all plays progressive
Dream Theater-like music) is not really a SG tribute band, but b/c of my SG fa
natism we play several SG songs live beside our OWN songs, and -it will sound
weirdy, but..., and lots of PanterA, and some Tool songs (every show we choose
from the cover songs we learned, we almost never do the same concert... You m
ay think that the songs of these bands can't come together, but I think the mus
ic of bLUNTEd (and the wide-scale music, bands I love) requires it. -you wouldn
't have even thought that sometimes we play Led Zep, rarely noo Metallica and e
ven we play a DT song (Caught In a Web))
So we played SPOONMAN many times (for the beginning of the concert..I'm a le
ad singer, and a guitar player, but for the song I only play guitar behind the
solos, and I 'just' do the lead vocals and the percussions on the rest of the s
ong (I agree with everybody who says that singing Chris' vocal melodies, someti
mes so powerful (and high) he does is a fuckin' hard and tiring thing|, but I d
isagree w/ the ones who say that the hard thing in playin' SG song is the drum-
first of all- b/c I think, that in Matt's playing the genius, great thing is t
he rhythms and 'grooves' he writes and the perfect timing, but the rest of the
SG song is not a really hard thing to play for a very good drum player, it's ha
rd for its timing for playing the song accurate.)
I do FELL ON BLACK DAYS alone (with one acoustic guitar)
We play OUTSHINED, and played BALCK HOLE SUN (for one time only)
That's all, but 4 months ago a couple of miskolcian (hungarian city where I liv
e) musician and I funded a band called SHINE|||
This is a band with two singers (like TOTD) and my 'role' is to act like CC in
the band (guitar, lead vocals)
We learned: (we'll play these songs on our concert, comin' on about
dec.)
             Pushin' Forward back
             Hunger Strike
and SG songs (my favs|||)

"Wreck" is a great word for the new webpage. Some of you may disagree with
me. I'm not too excited about insects crawling over the screen; they're an
annoying distraction. What the hell do insects have to do with SG anyway?
That's more appropriate for Alice In Chains(Jar Of Flies). The intro to
the page really sucks, too. Whoever designed that part needs a lesson in
animation. They may not be done constructing the page, but they need to
liven up some of the typography. Right now, some of it is "blah". I liked
the old webpage, with the yellow in the background.

Stella(a SOMMS member) said, "They're biting off the unofficial site!"
That may be true. THE BASTARDS! I spend more time in Seth's site anyway,
because it rules, and it's not commercial. I get lots of information about
SG that I WANT, and I don't feel threatened with having to buy merchandise.

I still haven't checked out the whole site, but I took eliza's(another
member's) advice and checked out the SNL pics(they were really cool--thanx,
eliza!). That was one of my favorite SNL episodes of all time, and I don't
have too many favorites to begin with. Not only did they have SG on that
episode, but they had Carrey! I was literally crying during that episode,
it was so hilarious. I guess SG also thinks Hootie sucks; they did a skit
on that with Carrey on SNL and it didn't air. If only I could get my hands
on that skit...

For all the "I-think-Chris-is-sexy-fans"--check out the SNL pic with the
link labeled "preparing". I thought to myself, "If Chris grows out more
hair, he'd have an Afro!"

motorvision vid (can't wait to watch it) which i have been looking for for a

knuckles) featuring our favorite bass player for only approximately 2 bucks...
i also found several interesting items back at the store...one is a used copy of
Truly's vinyl titled Fast something (i can't remember) which is also under $5...
i also found two copies of Sub Pop 200 (i think) the one with the black and
white comic art...now if i can only find a cheap copy of BMF/SOMMS nearby...

maybe you are thinking of matt cameron, who played drums for skin
yard before joining soundgarden. I read that matt actually wanted to leave
the band (skin yard) because he was so much better than its other members,

I thought the same thing when I had my first look at it, stella.
there are a couple of pages (the news page in particular) which seem to be
a just a little too derivative of ol' sgi.net and its white, red and black
motif.

other than that it is certainly a colourful site (some of the
album pages have nice background colours), but I don't think it does much
for the continuity of the place. they also have some stuff marked as
'new' which really isn't new at all <pointing to their faq> and the lyrics
section has some odd aspects. some of the songs are written in all-caps,
while others are not. seasons is in there, but cold bitch and birth
ritual aren't. funniest of all is their disclaimer on any of the lyrics
from ultramega, where they are left to say "meister chris cornell won't
tell us what the real lyrics to this song are - so here's what we came up
with". sounds like the band is giving their full support to imusic's
content efforts <snigger>. add to that the handful of songs they actually
haven't got there (if they can have cleaning my gun, why not put karaoke
or she's a politician in there?) and the small error of having both new
damage and drawing flies in there twice, and you have some bugs to work
out.

ooh, I just found something *funny*. chris said in an article that
while reading an early typed version of his lyrics (which were to be
included in the dotu liner), he found the line "I must be tame and cook"
during boot camp. seems as though the boys and girls at imusic have pulled
that first attempt out of the trash, because it is up there again in all
its glory :)

now that I'm done bagging it, there is actually some stuff there
that I like; for instance the snl photos, the photos from the burden video
shoot, the jason finn interview with kim (which is really cool) and the
lyrics to the two new songs (ocean fronts and cleaning my gun). also
interesting to note is the full lyrics to both burden in my hand (yes,
it is 'god' and not 'gone').

just out of interest, both the official site and sgi.net have a
lyric from 4th of july as "pale in the flare light". I always thought it
was "pale in the frail light", which seems to fit a little better. what
do you think?

(more notes for imusic lurkers: black hole sun is written by
chris, not ben; what the *hell* is going on with the lyrics to bleed
together?; the music for drawing flies is by matt; while some of the
insects are cool, what relevance do they really have?; and lastly, if you
are going to add a bunch of new pages then maybe you should update the
older ones instead of just leaving them as is? it would look more like
one site than two or three joined together.)

Subject: technical stuff

checked out some of those new articles that seth added to the page and
noticed that in one of them (from the Rocket c.1990) chris and kim
mentioned that the upcoming-Louder Than Love disc would be
digitally-mastered. you know, that expensive-ass
version of a cd that you see at the Wherehouse that never gets sold. but
in the interview, kim claims that A&M wouldn't put that label on there for
some reason. you only pay for the "regular" version but you're really
getting the better-quality disc. is this really true? this may explain
some of the so-called noise quality problems on BMF as compared with LTL
if it's true.

my dad's got one of those DMM discs (i think
it's a jackson browne album) but it's gold. not that those discs would
HAVE to be gold, but i know my LTL is not. what's the deal?
secondly, my old man told me about a new drum head setup that is being
made by some guy here in seattle (i apologize for all this vagueness)
that's being used by sean kinney, and possibly matt cameron. it's
apparently some hybrid electronic/acoustic deal that supposed to save the
drummer from the wrath of carpal tunnel where you the amount of force on
the drum does not change the volume on it. anyone know about *this*?

and lastly, (this too, will be SG-related) i checked out that 'new and
improved' SG site on imusic and in the interview with Jason Finn and Kim,
Kim mentions that the band is considering the release of some of the extra
material from the DOTU sessions for KOTS fanclub members. send in those
checks, kids! this sounds like it could be a winner!

for you technical people out there... i was watching some very old pj
footage last night, and there was a MTV news report of the show SG played in
toronto in 93, opening for Neil Young with Pearl Jam... what was interesting
to me about the footage was the guitar chris was playing -- it looked like a
fender jaguar (do i have that right)? is this common? has he used this one
a lot?

also really amusing was the interview with kim and the newly-shaved-head
chris, talking about why they played that show -- that neil kept asking them
and kept asking them, and they kept being busy, and they were STILL busy but
figured if they didn't say yes, that he'd stop asking. ;-)

on the subject of the imusic site, it STILL takes me a year to load, and
those useless animations really annoy me (they annoy me about as much as the
animated ad banners on addicted to noise). that black-and-white-and-red
color scheme on the front page is such a blatant rip off that if i was seth,
i'd kill 'em. and speaking as someone who just had sony blatantly rip off
not just layout, but actual CONTENT off her pearl jam page, i don't get it.
these people are PROFESSIONALS who are PAID and work on this part time.
they had damn well better have more creative ideas than they obviously
do/don't, or they'll be out of a job soon.

what also really annoyed me about the page was their "SOUNDGARDEN FAN
COMMUNITY". like we're all going to leave this list to post on the stupid
bbs or chat rooms.

is anyone else getting a new picture on the second page of the
imusic site? while I kinda liked the first one, the new one looks pretty
cool (and different to what you might expect). it actually looks like matt
is wearing one of those old guns n' roses shirts with the pistols and
roses logo on black. kim is actually wearing a party hat, and chris is
wearing some god-awful sunglasses. kind of cool, really. perhaps it is
just a random picture, but every other time I've received the green one...

...but just to add to that fan community thing that so riled
caryn, is the new setup a blatant dig at the list (and indirectly at
sgi.net)? now they have four different bulletin boards rather than just
that old chat board. the one that surprises me the most is the
trading/selling board. I just wouldn't think the guys behind the site
would have thought of that. but with the section's focus on the "fan
community", it seems they may be a tad interested in tapping into what we
have here. nice try, but no cigar :)

the images on the front page are random (as are the quote above the
image and the link at the bottom right), and there are 5 possible
images. however, look closely when they load: there are 3 green ones
and 2 blue ones, and the band's pose is just slightly different in
each.

you can go to http://www.imusic.com/soundgarden/sg3/graphics33/ and
look at all of them (theguys*.gif) if you want. while you're there,
you can look at all the other stuff that hasn't gone public yet,
though is right there for everyone to see: the sg radio gif, the
digital postcards ad, etc. :)

while we're talking about the new site, i'd like to let you know what
i think of it.

- - the random quote and random link on the front page kind of bothered
me at first, just because the unofficial site has had those things for
a long time.

- - i like the black/white/green color scheme on the main, directory,
and search pages, though the bugs are stupid.

- - the best-looking stuff on the site is definitely the snl section,
though the cd+ section has always looked superb.

- - the euro tour 96 feature (with alain of eleven) is crappy. (hint to
web designers: that's what *not* to do)

- - the discog is much improved, though i wonder about some of the color
choices. [it was cool seeing the pyrrhic victory cassette, because i
remember contacting c/z about scanning it and daniel house told me
that the only copy they had was over at imusic being scanned for the
official site. :)]

- - in fact, i wonder about color choices on a lot of the site. exhibit
a: the lyrics to beyond the wheel. my problem is that there's no
continuity. when i first loaded it, i thought, cool, the whole
thing'll be black, white, and green, i dig it. but then i realized
that there are 100 different color schemes going on and i guess i
don't like that too much.

- - the interview feature with kim is great, though i'm again not fond
of the color scheme (or the graphics on this one).

anyway, that's about it. we have a search option on the unofficial
site now, too. i actually worked that up about a month and a half ago
and never got around to adding it to the site until yesterday (a
friend of mine finally helped me with the perl code so the results are
returned in alpha order). don't know if it's helpful or not.

Yeah I got that picture. I even saved it, it was funky :)

Anyways, about that little bug animation. I don't get it. If you click on
the thing, from what I can tell, its a random BUG link! What significance
does it all have with soundgarden? I was just curious, and it took me to
some Bee page about raising bees. And another link was some site that you
would buy amber jewelry with little bugs stuck inside, a la Jurassic Park.
It's all weird.
