Just to start off I am in NO way being critical, now that I got that out of

Could someone shed some light on this subject for me.

One other thing I have always wondered in face pollution, where it says:

First I gotta say thanks to all the people who managed to read the
review I posted. I thought it was maybe a bit long, but I know some
people like to get _all_ the details.... SHROOM!! (And yes... I think
you _could_ intimidate anyone if you put your mind to it!! ;) It's
that obsessive streak.... he he he he)

Right - what I really wanted to know was does anyone know what's going
on with the company that was sellling the calendars in the UK? (Esprit
Mail Order). I mailed 'em and asked about getting hold of one and they
told me...

I'm just wondering what copyright problems they could be having?? Were
they 'bootleg' calendars??... Wierd! Anyway, I really have to get hold
of one or else by the time next year comes round I'm gonna be stuck
with another Oasis one or something ("It's all I could find in the

As far as I know, Bob Dole said nothing about CC or Soundgarden - it was
the other way round! Read Vikki's account of her visit to Europe and you
will see that Chris mentioned BD at the Astoria last month.

It was really funny cause half the crowd didn't know WTF Bob Dole is
and the other half just didn't know why the hell he was being mentioned!

Oh yeah - thanks Vikki for posting your diary thingy, hope you had an

I am well aware of this fact, as being an artist, I have created pieces
which have their own meanings to me, and I encourage others to come up
with their own definitions. I've also been in a band and written lyrics
with much the same concept in mind. However, it seems that everybody has
missed the point of what I was trying to say. I wasn't telling anybody
not to derive their own meanings out of songs, just not to claim to know
what the writer was writing and why even if they stated otherwise.

For instance, it seems ridiculous to me after, CC has said "(whatever
song)... isn't about heroin", to turn round and say "Yes it is... even
though you wrote it, I'm gonna TELL you what you're own song is
about and why you wrote it, so there!!".

Putting your own meanings to songs is fine, as
long as they're your own personal interpretations -I do that- but when you
start trying to get inside the writers head, using your perceptions of a song
to try and assume to know why *they* wrote it (ie projecting your
meanings/interpretations onto the writer), it starts getting stupid.
I know what I'm talking about, I've had it done to me. I've written
songs and have had people try to tell me what my own songs are about and
why they think I worte them. If they had merely stated that their
interpretations are what the songs meant to THEM, that'd be fine, but
projecting your own meanings onto the person who wrote the song is
jumping the gun just a little too much for my liking, IMO.

As I stated above. I am well aware of that fact, but at the same time,
no-one (unless they're psychic or something like that), can possibly know
what's going on in another person's head in order to know why they do
what they do or to know what meanings they had in mind when they wrote
their own song.

I'm quite sure he wouldn't want to, however, what I got from Ray's
message was that he was claiming to know what a particular song meant to
Chris himself, as if he knew what he had in mind when he wrote his own
song, which (if this was his intent) is a silly idea.

I have heard both Physical Graffiti and The Machine, they are excellent.
The most outstanding thing about the Led Zep tribute is that they
actually manage to not only sound, but *look* exactly like the band. I
would love to see a great Soundgarden tribute band...
Oh, which reminds me, I had a most traumatic experience last Wednesday.
I had a show at a local bar with my band and one of the other bands was
some extremely lame cover band, and as they were getting to the end of
their set (which sucked), they said, "who wants to hear more?"...nobody
in the crowd really responded, but they continued to play, and did an
absolutely henious butchering of Fell On Black Days. I thought I was
going to cry right there. I went running around the bar screaming "they
can't do that! They just can't butcher Soundgarden! Woe is me!"
Anyways....

        Hey,
I was in Minneapolis for a show at first ave. last night (sunday), so I was
actually in the KREV 105 (revolution radio) listening area, which made me
very happy, because from all that I've heard, this station is supposed to
kick ass. Anyway, they had this show on when I was on my way back home that
had something to do with the heritage of new rock and stuff like that. At
one point the DJ starts talking about Johnny Cash and how his new album has
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers as the back-up band. Okay, that's pretty
cool, I thought. Then, very much to my delight, they played the Cash
version of Rusty Cage! On corporate radio, no less. I was astounded. Not
to mention having SG, Johnny Cash, and Tom Petty all collaborating (in a
way) on the same song. How cool can you get? (I have a somewhat confused
musical background, by the way.) The DJ was like, "I guarantee you won't
hear that on any other station around here." No kidding. Thanks REV, for
making radio cool again.

        Yours Happily,
        A Different Seth

P.S. If anyone from this area went to the that show at First Ave. sunday
(Pure/eels/Poe) let me know (privately) what you thought of it. I will also
be there for John Spencer Blues Explosion, and maybe Porno for Pyros, so if
you are going to those shows, let me know, too. SW

Subject: RE:Importance of lyrics?

In the interest of beating a decomposing horse:

Lyrics, to me, are what separate the merely good bands from the GREAT
bands. Bands that produce good music but poor lyrics, are the bands
with which I will become bored with over time. On the other hand,
great bands, like SG, that write excellent lyrics, will rarely if ever
come to bore me. I'll be interpreting and re-interpreting Chris's
lyrics for years to come. My interpretation of anyone particular song
will change from day to day depending on my current mood. That's the
fun of it. Chris may say that Like Suicide is about an injured bird,
but in my life experiences, that song brings out all kinds of images.

Also, I have a rule that, when I buy a new CD I do not permit myself
to read the lyrics on the way home before having listened to the
musical accompaniment. This is because most bands write such infantile
lyrics. Without music they just come off as well....infantile. Anyway,
I'm happy to say that SG breaks that rule for me all the time.

well kids, i know i hyped that Truly show last week, but i am sad to
report that there will be no review as they never showed on this past
rainy saturday. i am not sure of the reason but they were *supposed* to
open for sweet water in olympia this weekend.

they are supposed to play some other shows here in
seattle soon, and if they're gonna be there, well, dammit, so will i.

in other SG news, i am happy to report that i am now a proud owner of a
copy of SOMMS, so add me to the list of the few, the proud,
the...however that goes. i already had 4 of those tracks in some form or
another, but hey! all on one disc now! score one for me!

for those who haven't seen it, bounce over to seth's page to see The Ugly
Truth! Get your HANDS ALL OVER it, or you will be bound to die alone!
somebody stop me!!! nothing seems to kill me! ha! i kill me!

That's a pretty good deal on your part. I got the disc (minus the packaging)
for $15 which is the lowest I've heard anyone get it for. Seattle-area
vendors try to sell it for $60 but rarely do & Goldmine adverts list it for
anywhere from $25-$75. $25 is a good deal... if you have the money get it!

If anyone's interested, there's an interview w/ Matt in Drum! magazine.
I didn't buy it (I'm sorry!) but I read the whole thing in the middle
of the book store. It has a diagram of his drum setup, and he talks
about doing the drums for DoTU. It was pretty informative. Seth's
web page was also mentioned (and before the Rocktropolis page to boot!).

I'll try and buy it if i ever see it again.

I don't have the liner here in front of me, but from memory the
song (pushin' forward back) was written by chris (lyrics) with stone
goassard and jeff ament (music). my guess is that the song was published
under chris' "you make me sick I make music" and the publishing rights of
both jeff and stone. I'm certainly no expert in the field either, but I
think the members of soundgarden established their own musical
publisher/quasi-company so that they would retain the rights to their own
songs. because of this, I don't think that a&m have any say over whether
a song already published by the band can be used and that the request for
permission has to be forwarded to the publisher (ie. you make me...).

which in the end makes me think that the show either got
permission from chris, stone and jeff (not likely) or some guy in charge
of music or promotions on the show is using the sample without permission.
I don't think that money would be a motivating factor for the band
(considering their probable wealth), so they probably aren't in it for the
money. but if they have given permission, will we see another molsongate?

to an entirely different matter: the ugly truth. I think that the
new and unofficial soundgarden faq is a pretty good starting point for
those of you who may not know that much about the band and for those who
want to know more. I know I certainly learned some things while writing
it :) anyhow, I'd just like to extend my thanks to the list and all its
members in helping me (either directly or indirectly) write the faq, which
turned out fairly well for a first version. as seth has already said,
updates will come in halfway through each month, so if there is something
you want answered or something that I haven't answered properly, please
tell me about it and it will go before the board :)

sorry if my typing was sloppy, but I'm trying to keep my fingers
crossed while watching the monday night game. go niners!

	rumour for the week -

I got this off the pumpkins mailing list (from a digest that
featured vasant sticking up for steve albini, no less), and it seems to be
a pretty good one for accurate information. some guy read in guitar world
that a record called "here comes the fuzz" (I don't know the release date)
will come out sometime in the future. two musicians who contribute in
some fashion? billy corgan and our very own kim thayil :) does anyone else
know something about this? maybe billy has joined the ranks of dark load?
there was no information as to what kim actually contributes, so any info
will be gladly welcomed.

Speaking of the Devil...

I heard about this CD on KISW the other night on the "Lowdown". The CD is
supposed to be an avenue for artists to showcase their skills and maybe some
interests that they can't explore in their regular bands. Who knows, maybe
Kim will do a jazzy rendition of William Tell's Overture. One can only
dream...

At least I don't dream about seafood. Hahah, just kidding. ;) I'm allowed to
joke around with my deputy.

It has been brought to my attention that I never announced the results of the
SOMMS General Election. Well, since I was the only person running for
Sheriff, I assumed everyone would have figured that I got the job. Well, it
was a close race, and it came right down to the last few votes. But you will
all be glad to hear that The List Thug is now also the Somms Sheriff! The
Presidential election will be this Nov. 4th, so get out there and vote, and
vote often for Kim Thayil. He's the right guy for the job. Not only does he
support the initiative 131 (also known as the Free Beer initiative), he also
supports the BPFSM Act of 1996. (for those unaware of the BPFSM Act, it is
basically the Backstage Pass For Somms Member's Act, and entitles all Somm's
members in good standing a backstage pass to each show they attend)

KIM THAYIL FOR PRESIDENT!!! Kim Thayil '96!

I was listening to Load on my walkman on the train home last night, thinking
about all the adverse reaction the album - and particularly their new
'image' - got from a lot of Metallica fans, and it got me wondering...

If Soundgarden turned up on stage every night during this tour wearing
make-up, nail varnish, feather boas etc like Kirk and Lars, what would
*your* reaction be? And which band members do you think would 'take the
plunge'? :-)

You must be referring to _Smell The Fuzz_, which is a Guitar World
compilation, released on Metal Blade Records (catalog number 962-2).
It features Dark Load's "Brewicide," which does indeed have our own
Kim Thayil on it. :) I love the song title...

It will be released this fall.
