Don't forget 'Times Of Trouble'. 'when the spoon is hot & the needle's
sharp' etc... It's about the negative aspects of heroin of course, but in
fact a heroin-related song. I also still believe that 'Spoonman' has heroin
overtones as well... no matter what Cornell says. It's not his right to tell

For me, the lyrics are just "there". You can take them or leave them.

What's there to support? Of course his lyrics are poetry. That's an
undenieable fact, and also a major part of why I enjoy SG so much.
'Teachers' of the world will have to recognice great poets of rock music
sooner or later, but they'll definitely have to do it. Yeah, they deliver
poetry diferently from 'the norm', but that doesn't make it any less
artistical.

I suggest you print out some of his best work and show it to him/her. My
suggestions would be the slower/darker songs (4th of July, Zero Chance
and the like).

Sorry Kathie, I am continuing this thread, but its because I agree with you!

I have to admit when I first saw the latest pics of Chris, I was 'concerned'
and spent many an hour when I should have been working pondering on the
reasons and scaring myself silly. But I think you could be right - we're
all over-reacting. I saw him at Brixton and - together with Gemma and
Vikki's pics of him smiling - I have to say he at least looks happier than
he has at some points in the past. And he still occasionally takes off his
shirt - so *he's* obviously not bothered by his skinnier frame. If there
*is* anything ' wrong',there's nothing we can do about it anyway.

I also think he probably thought it was fun in the beginning, especially as
he wasn't/isn't up for grabs. And in the early days, Soundgarden did say a
lot of what they did was parody ( I don't think they think of themselves
that way now). Trouble was, the whole sexgod, hair shaking parody backfired
- - the media focused on it too much and didn't get the humour. So it started
taking over and overshadowing Soundgarden as musicians. Plus he's bound to
change his attiude over a period of 12 years.

Exactly. I'm a 'newer' fan than Kathie, but I've got a vast amount of
articles going back to 89 when they started getting attention in Britain,
and you wouldn't necessarily think you were reading about the same band.
But I'm not just talking about the difference between 89 and 96. One minute
they're Frowngarden, or they're sensitive intelligent souls, the next minute
they are pissing on food, shouting abuse at old ladies and taking AIDS
tests. At first it got me thinking, 'Will the real Soundgarden please stand
up! I'm confused!'

Now I just accept that they are human, they are fallible (and Chris is
allowed to have bloodshot eyes and the odd blemish now and then :-)!. And
they probably even make stuff up sometimes either out of self-defence, their
weird sense of humour or because they are not exactly fond of interviews.
And I try not to read *too much* into how they look or act, or what they say.

Whatever happens, they're still one of the most interesting bands around -
both on and off stage.

Okay, I'm done. You can all WAKE UP now.

To everyone who doesn't currently own the SOMMS disk, check out any
available used CD places in your area. You may not have any hope of finding it
there, but you could be surprised. I have seen a perfect copy of this disk in
a used CD store in my area. Some people are just dumb. How could you give up
that disk. Also, I have the Fresh Deadly Rarities bootleg, and that has all the
songs from SOMMS (minus the live version of Slaves and Bulldozers) and that
bootleg is fairly common now. If there is a Wherehouse records near you, ask
them to order it if you don't have these songs. Anyway, just thought I would
help out anyone who doesn't have a clue how to get that kind of thing.

Subject: Lyrics and dreams

Just to clarify what I wrote about CC and the magic fish. It was a
dream, and I can't control what I dream(if I could, it wouldn't have been
CC on the bed). Also, the magic fish part of the dream was probably
influenced by reading THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY(you know, the
little babel fish that he puts in his ear for a translator). Now that
that is done, let me add my own comments and feelings as to the meaning
of lyrics. I think that many of Soundgarden's songs have deep meaning,
both intended by the writer and inferred by the listener. What I mean to
say is that, even though the writer may intend the lyrics to mean one
thing, to the listener, they could mean an entirely different thing.
That's what's great about art--You have the right to interpret the work
as it makes you feel, not just solely by what the artist is trying to
express(although admittedly, that is important as well). Everybody has his
or her own view upon the meaning, none of them being more or less valid.
It doesn't really sound like I'm making sense, so i'll stop now.

Subject: LONG!! SG Concert - Glasgow 16th Sept
From: Stephen Johnston CS93 <sjohnsto@cs.strath.ac.uk>

Soundgarden - Glagow Barrowlands - Monday 16th September
====================================================

What can I say... totally fucking excellent!! This is the first time
I'd ever seen SG live and I was totally speechless. Brydon Cheyney
(famous SOMMS bloke!) phoned me up and we met up at a pub in
Glasgow... which was a bit shit for me seeing as the way things worked
out I ended up driving :( ( I just can't handle seeing other people
having a nice, long pint when I'm sipping on a glass of Coke!!)

Brydon met up with one of his mates from Shetland and we stayed for a
few drinks then headed on down to the Barrowlands. We didn't get there
till a bit later... the doors were open at 7:30 but we made it up
there for about 8:30 ish. Caught the last 4 or 5 songs from Moby, who
I've gotta say, has changed his style a _lot_ from the last time I
heard any Moby stuff. I'd heard he'd discovered the guitar, but I
thought we'd just have the old dancy bit with a bit of guitar thrown
in.... not even close. He was heavy! VERY heavy!!

SG came on about half 9 and I managed to get to about 3-4 rows back
from the front. The minute they walked on the stage I realised I had a
complete arsehole behind me who just liked shoving his elbows between
my shoulder blades and pushing hard to see if he could get past... no
chance! Matt came on first, then Kim, Chris and Ben. I dunno if I
agree with all the talk about Chris being ill - he _did_ look pretty
thin right enough, but he's also one tall bastard and it's think it's
just that that makes it look like something worse. I tried to look at
what everyone was wearing (cos I know some people like that sorta
thing!!) so here's what I remember. Chris had on black jeans, a black
T-Shirt and this dark brown leather jacket. Matt had a T-Shirt
(couldn't see what was on it) and shorts (I think) and I can't really
remember what the rest of them had on (sorry!!)

Here's what they played (not sure about the order here - Brydon tried
to get the setlist at the end, but some clever bastard had already got
it.... DAMN!) I just couldn't take it in for the first few songs that
I had actually managed to get a ticket to see them live and was
standing right in front of these guys whose music, I've gotta say,
I've done a fair bit of growing up while listening to. It was really
strange! So if I get the songs all screwed up here I'm sure Brydon'll
put you right!

Anyways... here's the list:

Spoonman
Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Burden In My Hand
Let Me Drown
Ty Cobb
Head Down
Pretty Noose
Black Hole Sun (solo)
My Wave
Boot Camp (extended)
Waiting For The Sun
Never Named
Fell On Black Days
Rusty Cage
Blow Up The OUtside World
Mailman
Rhinosaur
Drawing Flies

Encore
======

Captain Beefheart cover?? (haven't a clue... Brydon said !!)
Full On Kevin's Mom

One wierd thing was there was no sign of the fork round Chris'
neck... hmmm. There were the usual load of tossers there chucking
stuff. I got a pint of beer chucked from behind me, which skimmed
across the top of my head, emptied half of itself over Brydon, my face
and my left arm (knackering my watch... oops!) then it kept going and
hit Ben on the legs. He didn't look too pleased at all. In fact, he
wasn't moving about much at all. He had that snarl on all night! I
definitely would NOT get in his way. Saying that, he played bloody
brilliantly. I was right up the front from just after halfway through
the set to the end. Near the end of Black Hole Sun someone hit Chris
with a cup full of water. He just kept playing!! Totally
unaffected... what a pro! The minute he'd finished up with BHS tho',
he looked down, kicked the cup away and shot a 'fucking wanker' look
out into the crowd where the cup came from. I couldn't see what Kim
was doing cos I couldn't see past one of the 'built like a brick
shithouse' security guards. Matt was bloody amazing. Every time I
looked over there he was looking out in the crowd, and drumming away
at an unreal speed. How the hell can you do that??

I put the idea to Brydon at one point that we should wait for a gap
between songs and shout out a message from Shroom, but we kinda
chickened out, and anyway, we wouldn't want to make Chris _too_
paranoid - well not on the first date of the tour anyway ;) I mean, he
might've chickened out and missed out 'Shroom-land' altogether when
they tour over there!!

There were a few songs I'd _really_ wanted to hear live... I'd have
loved to hear Jesus Christ Pose (I know - I've already got about a
million live versions... but still!), Little Joe woulda been great
too, and Loud Love would've been better than I could've hoped for. But
they played Ty Cobb (YES!) and when they played Full On Kevin's Mom in
the encore that _more_ than made up for the fact they never did Jesus
Christ Pose. It was _amazing_! The best part about it was that hardly
anyone knew it, so it made it all the better!

I'm not sure what he was up to, but near the end of the main set, at
the end of one of the songs (I've forgotten which one) Ben walked
right up to the edge of the stage and locked his hands together and
did that butterfly thing you can do with your hands. Anyway, he put
his hands up to his chest and stood there looking straight out at the
crowd doing this for about 20 - - 30 seconds. I don't have a clue what
he was doing, but it looked as cool as fuck!

Oh - I got a T-shirt and an SG baseball cap - decent quality too! It's
a darkish green with the word Soundgarden stitched on the back in the
same font as the album (or maybe I shouldn't be talking about fonts
and T-Shirts in the same sentence here.... ;) ) It's got the
Soundgarden 'S' on the front (from UMOK). I've gotta agree with
whoever said it a couple o month back tho' - it's amazing how many
people only half look at it and then accuse you of having a
swastika. Silly bastards... need their eyes tested :)

Chris voice was superb. Any doubts I'd ever had about his voice after
any voice problems were just blown away. Never faltered once, and
didn't even look like he was straining to get those high notes. He was
hitting the end part of Rusty Cage as easily as he sung the the start
of Black Hole Sun. Blow up the Outside World was actually BETTER than
the version on the album. Maybe it's just cos I never liked that
horrible Lennon-ish filtering on the singing in the verses, but
hearing it without any filtering - I just can't describe it. It was
sooooo much better - and it was one of the top songs on the album as
it was!

We all poured out at the end, wrung out our T-shirts (me & Brydon
still totally amazed they'd played Full On Kevin's Mom). We even
managed to get into Tower Records and get the BIMH singles on the way
back. Not bad, eh?!

After a disgusting hour's drive home slipping about in a sweaty seat,
I got in the house, switched on the stereo and relaxed to the sounds
of Karaoke and Bleed Together. I woke up in the morning and realised
I'd been asleep on the floor in front of the stereo all night!!
Hmmm...

I've gotta say it tho' - in case I haven't made it clear yet... IT WAS
ONE OF THE BEST FUCKING NIGHTS OF MY LIFE!!!

Cheers,

 - Steve

btw - Sorry for the long post but I guessed that seeing as I've been
on the list for well over a year and only been able to post twice, it
was time to start making up for it!! He he he...

all lyricists, poets have the same concept of their work: once it's out
there, e.g., recorded and released, it takes on a life of their own.
sometimes you can write something and as you work with it you find out it
has other meanings that go way beyond what the original spark was.

i once worked with a band back in their baby-band days who were/are
particularly known for refusing to state what their lyrics meant or even
including lyrics with albums. it was amazing the people w ho would come
up to the band with their questions and interpretations about the songs --
the members would stop sometimes and say, 'wow, no, that wasn't at all
what i was thinking of, but you know, i totally understand where you're
coming from'. there are many many forces at work during creation of art,
and not just conscious ones.

i agree with ray, btw. what he was trying to say (i think) is that chris
cornell cannot tell ME what a song means to me, even if HE wrote it. why
would he want to? what's the beauty in that?

Does anyone know fo sure that SG is not going to come to Kansas City! I
really want to see them again, because my opinion is that Lolla did not
do them the justice they would have being out on the tour they are on by
them selves.

Also, even this has nothing to do with SG but are there any other radio
stations giving away a trip to Frankfurt, Germany to see METALLICA.

I am so happy!!!!! I went out last night looking for some SG

("Louder than Live" was $75!)Anyway, I did get 'Songs from the
Superunkown' for only $4.99! What a deal (or atleast I think so,
compared to how much they are charging for eveything else). It makes
me SICK how much they ask for music now. It is insane!! You would
need to win the lottery to afford everything. Anyway, I also was
able to get another copy of Ultramega OK (my first one mysteriously
disappeared several years ago)!! I was feeling fairly satisfied
since I had to go to 5 different places just to find a small sample
of SG albums and CD's. I have to say that the one and only thing
that I HATE about Seattle (and believe me this is the only thing) It
is so damn hard to find anything SG. (Unless you got major bucks to
spend) Several stores I went to were completely sold out of
everything they had that was SG related. I had better luck finding
rareties in Idaho. Well, if anyone in the area has any suggestions
of places to go where they won't totally rip you off--please let me
know. I'm still looking for a SOMMS CD (I can't afford $60 which is
what they are asking at Cellophane Square) and a BIMH single CD. I
would appreciate any help I could get. Just one more thing---- have

ok ok i kinda expected that to happen. i thought of the temple of the dog
songs when i posted but i was thinking that 1) they werent about chris, but
andy doing heroin..and mostly i just thought id post and put the quote in
because of what i thought was an innacurate interpretation of the lyrics to
Burden..

the context of the qoute is that the interviewer is talking to chris about
kurt, and kristen (hole), and andy and drugs and seattle, and then later on
he asks chris if 'the day i tried to live' was a heroin song. then chris
responded with the quote. its a really good article, its on seth's page if
anyone wants to read it. its january 12, 1995 rolling stone.

I DO NOT F---ING BELIEVE THIS!!! You got kicked out of the class?!?! For
CHRIS CORNELL'S BEAUTIFUL WRITING?! Ok, your teacher is insane . . . as for
supporting:
Well, I don't know if JCP was exactly the best selection for poetry, since
it isn't exactly one of Chris' deeper songs, due to the fact that it's
really just about the pose, and not really much deeper than that. But if
you'd taken in a song like: Room a Thousand Years Wide (even though it's
Kim), Black Hole Sun, THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE, SEASONS, SEARCHING WITH MY
GOOD EYE CLOSED, Mind Riot, Fell on Black Days, FOURTH OF JULY, BURDEN IN MY
HAND, or BOOT CAMP (and a # of others, but I think those are probably the
MOST poetic, especially the capitalized ones), and your teacher STILL
objected, then there would be definately something wrong. In the case of
these listed songs, and many others, I believe that Chris is a better poet
than some of the world's more distinguished poets. Especially those
capitalized songs, they have all the qualities of good poetry,
similies/metaphors ("Like angels in a cage"), descriptive scenes ("Shower in
the dark day, clean sparks diving down, cool in the waterway, where the
baptized drown, naked in the cold sun, breathing life like fire, thought I
was the only one, but that was just a lie"), open to interpretation for
thousands of meanings (I mean, just look at all the discussions we've had
here about the meanings of songs like Burden in My Hand and Slaves &
Bulldozers!), and many other things! (I'm in kind of a hurry so I gotta sum
this up) - CHRIS CORNELL IS MORE POETIC THAN MANY POETS THAT I HAVE READ,
and I'm talking about poems in my English class poetry book! none of those
poems have inspired me so much as: "Words we say never seem to live up to
the ones inside our head, Lives we make never seem to ever get us anywhere
but dead" and assorted other lyrics! That man is one of the most poetic
people that has ever lived! Long live k(s)ing(er)!

ummm yeah . . .

. . .oh, and just because I'm special, I'm also going to send this to the
list ;-)

Subject: Seattle, Hater on Halloween

Here is my tale of woe (pronounce the word "woe" like Joey Lawrence to
get the right effect) I was looking forward to going to Seattle this
month. Meeting Caryn, Shroom, Dena, seeing Hater at the OK Hotel, and
most importantly, to see whether this was a city I could live in. I am
currently having cold water thrown on my plans by my mom and my
grandmother. A little background-I graduated in May and was promised a
trip as a graduation present. So this is what I wanted for the trip.
I don't have a job, so this trip is courtesy of my family.

But I made the mistake of saying that I was going to meet some people
who I had met from this mailing list. My grandmother is now convinced
that Caryn, Shroom et. al are luring me to Seattle and will kill me. I
kid you not. She keeps saying that if I go she will plan her funeral
because if something happens to me, it will kill her. My mom doesn't
want me to go because 1)it's upsetting her mother 2)it bothers her
that I'm meeting people who "have something to do with some band."
Why, oh, why didn't I say this list was about art or something? That's
what I get for being honest.

Well, I am going to figure something out. One other problem. I was
going to stay at the Moore hotel-I figured it couldn't be too bad if
Shroom and Dena were staying there. But now they aren't. Caryn, other
Seattle people, where can I stay?

Such is my tale of woh!

Good art can mean more than what the artist intended. I get totally
different ideas from music, poerty, prose, etc than what the artist did
because I think freely. I don't let anyone's views crowd mine. I can take
other's opinions & (maybe) incorporate them into mine but only if I agree
with them.

To be honest I don't really care what an artist meant by a particular song
(generally speaking) because I normally don't know this person, don't relate
to them directly, nor do I expect to be able to discuss the lyrics with them
on a personal basis. Now if Thayil came over for an afternoon & asked my
opinion on what 'NTMF' meant, I'd expect his feelings as well otherwise I
think my view of the song's pretty cool. I'd actually be upset to find out
that it's simply a string of words that sound good together.
