The Soundgarden song goes, "I'm looking California and feeling
Minnesota." In Steven Baigleman's FEELING MINNESOTA, the characters may
be looking to Las Vegas, but they're still feeling Minnesota, which is
where most of the movie takes place.

I think my most frequent complaint about movies is that they're not
original enough. That's one accusation I won't be leveling at FEELING
MINNESOTA, for, while this twisted romantic comedy is far from an
example of perfect film making, it is quirky, offbeat, and highly
original. Take a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, set them down in a
universe that feels like it was created by pop-culture wannabe-god
Quentin Tarantino, and throw in dashes of THE STING, Dostoevsky, and the
absurdist humor of MONTY PYTHON, and you still haven't quite got what
FEELING MINNESOTA is offering.

Writer/director Baigleman has cheerfully thrown all the formulas
out the window. I suppose it's possible to guess at the outcome of
certain events, but, in general, this movie defies prediction. Some of
the twists are decidedly bizarre, but it's precisely because this movie
is willing to take chances that I'm giving it a marginal recommendation.
I'll admit that I didn't always feel comfortable watching FEELING
MINNESOTA -- it's a gritty, grungy film with thoroughly dislikeable
characters -- but I admired what Baigleman was trying to do, even when
his attempts went astray.

The opening of FEELING MINNESOTA introduces us to Freddie (Cameron
Diaz), who, dressed in a wedding gown, is fleeing from her former boss,
Red (Delroy Lindo), an underworld-type. Red has plans to punish
Freddie, who he believes stole $10,000 from him. He's going to force
her to marry his most loyal employee, Sam Clayton (Vincent D'Onofrio),
because, in his words, "It's the worst thing I could think to do to
you." Despite the bride's reluctance, the ceremony takes place. In
attendance is Sam's younger brother, Jjaks (Keanu Reeves), a repeat
offender criminal who despises all of his blood relations. There is
immediate electricity between Jjaks and Freddie, and, while the
reception is going on outside Sam's house, the pair retires inside for
some quick sex. Afterwards, when Jjaks announces his intention to hit
the road again, Freddie begs him to take both her and Sam's private
stock of cash with him. Then, together, they can head to Las Vegas, her
vision of paradise-on-Earth.

I'm reasonably sure that Baigleman intended for FEELING MINNESOTA
to be a comedy, but, primarily because the tone is so grim (people are
always dying unexpectedly), it's difficult to find much that's funny.
Anyone expecting to laugh their head off is in for a bummer. FEELING
MINNESOTA's sense of humor is bleak -- this picture is a prime example
of a black comedy. I mean, two guys sitting on opposite sides of a
road, pelting each other with rocks is ludicrous, but hardly likely to
cause waves of uncontrollable laughter. And, as was the case in TRUE
ROMANCE, the love affair between the man and woman is far less important
than the one between the men and their guns. On top of that, it's
impossible to sympathize with the characters -- they're all a bunch of
intellectually dim, lowlife criminals for whom betrayal and backstabbing
are second nature.

For the most part, I'm not a big Keanu Reeves fan. But, despite
his limited range, he's right for Jjaks. His performance in FEELING
MINNESOTA never caused me to wince. Cameron Diaz, who has been
appearing in a number of independent productions (including THE LAST
SUPPER and SHE'S THE ONE) continues to show great promise. Even under
all the grime of FEELING MINNESOTA, her charisma shines through.
Vincent D'Onofrio, who usually plays inoffensive supporting roles, is
effective here as Sam the bully. Dan Aykroyd has a sometimes-amusing,
sometimes-irritating part as a crooked police officer infatuated with
Freddie (his fake accent makes him sound like he wandered over from
FARGO).

Ultimately, I probably liked the idea of FEELING MINNESOTA more
than I enjoyed the execution. Nevertheless, when the end credits
rolled, I was reasonably satisfied because I had just experienced
something a little different. FEELING MINNESOTA certainly isn't
everyone's cup of tea, and, despite the drawing power of Keanu Reeves,
I'm not sure it was wise to expose the film to such a wide distribution
(it invites disappointment). But, if you're tired of routine, "feel
good", Hollywood fare and are looking for something a little Tarantino-
ish and a lot unusual, FEELING MINNESOTA will leave you feeling
pleasantly surprised.

This is about obsessions. You see, there's this girl in my religion class,
who is insanely obsessed with The Who, and more specifically, Roger Daltry.
In fact, she makes it a point to pray "That Roger Daltry has a good day" in
prayer, EVERY SINGLE (*)%&@%&! DAY! And in a class discussion today, it was
mentioned that last year in one of her classes, her teacher sent all of her
assignments to her counselor, because I'm told she had Roger Daltry drawings
and other assorted Roger Daltry thingamajiggies all over them . . . you see,
this girl is so obsessed that her teacher thought she needed professional

THAT obsessed with (sorry about the excessive use of the SHIFT KEY, but I'm
rather EXCITED for numerous reasons too many to NAME, but TRUST me, I'm very
HAPPY right now), but I thought I'd bring the subject forth to you great and
wonderful folks, and see what thoughts you could through out, whether you
have had any of these experiences, or anything beyondly obsessed, or any
simple thoughts about this point of obsession, and YES, this IS related to
SOUNDGARDEN, as I'm mainly referring to you'z folks's obsessions WITH
Soundgarden, or specific BAND members, etc . . .
well, okay, enough typing for now . . .
...let me know if any of this makes/made any sense, because I'm just so

Hello my fellow SOMMSters,

Today is General Election Day here in SOMMS land. Your Presedential candidate
is the ever powerful and respected Kim Thayil. Who is backed by the KTMS,
KTMSPAC, and the THUG party.

Today's election is also for your new SOMMS Sheriff. Out of coincedence, I
just happen to be the only candidate for this office. But I will encourage
you to vote for me just the same for these ADDITIONAL reasons:
1. I follow the gospel of the Reverend Horton Heat.
2. I skiped breakfast yesterday.
3. I am the only one running for the job.

Now you have a total of 8 reasons why you should vote for me as your new
SOMMS Sheriff. Have a great election day.

When I went to Spain and Germany this summer, all they had were the
jewel boxes, but back on this continent (Asia), they have both.
Actually it's a tidal thing: First they only had digi's, then they only had
jewel boxes and now they're coming back with the digi's, so we have
plenty of both. It's really strange.

Just another quick question: Is the Hater CD normally hard to find?
b/c every record store I've been to until now has had multiple copies of it....

I also think the anonimity thing for some reason strips some people of
their civility. I often wonder if the people who write horribly scathing
flames (I'm not thinking of anyone in particular here, so don't get
defensive) and some of the really nasty personal emails I've been
subjected to at times actually talk to people like that face to face. I
truly hope not. I feel that people deserve respect, whether you know
them personally or you are simply on an anonomous mailing list, and even
if you vehemently disagree with what they say. I'm not saying we
shouldn't flame people, or argue, just do it without such shitty
attitudes. As the old cliche goes "you catch more flies with honey than
vinegar". Sometimes someone may say something you think is really
stupid, but if you address that "something" in a decent way you may find
that you agree with that person on alot of other things.

deb is right. We all are on this list because we love Soundgarden (at
least that's supposed to be the case). But that doesn't mean our
personalities are all the same, or that we look the same, or like the
same other music, or the same Soundgarden songs for that matter. I think
people tend to take some of the posts too personally. I know I've been
guilty of that too, and I guess it is appropriate if a flame is directed
specifically to you, but otherwise, lighten up people.

Which brings me to the Chris Cornell pictures again. We've had a thread
about aging and looks and then people are talking about how awful Chris
looks, most of you probably still drooling over pictures of him from the
mid to late 80's. Yep, even Chris Cornell is getting older, and his
looks are changing and his voice is a bit different and God how we pick
and pick and pick at him! This little thread has really bugged me. Its a
good thing he seems to have a relatively good self concept. If he were
less sure of himself he may just end up like Kurt Cobain. The man is
beautiful, inside and out, and a genius on top of it. And personally I
don't think he looks "sick" at all, just thin. It seems to me that Chris
has been trying for years to get the emphasis off his looks. I can
understand being concerned (as the thread several months ago about his
drinking maybe being out of control showed), but after I saw the
pictures for myself I just didn't see where the "concern" part was
coming from, except that he looks different than he did during his Sex
God days. Does that mean he's sick, though? Maybe sick of the continued
focus on his looks.

I wish I could think of an idea for a clever new thread, but I'm feeling
sad and disillusioned right now.

> Perhaps group therapy is in order?

Interesting idea deb. Think we could find a chat room big enough? :)

Wow a bathroom shrine to SG. You are a better fan than I Toni...

Okay decorating with SG mmmmmm... To my shame I don't have much in the way
of SG dicor.. My office has the DOTU poster that Toni got for me. A very
seductive type picture of Chris (you know one of those head tilled down
eyes looking up at you with that come here look - sigh), a very small group
picture. a small picture of Ben.

At home there is only one picture of Chris and it is hanging in a closet -
shame, shame, hang my head. But you have to understand my piece of trash
stereo is in that closet. I do have three very nice poster but there is
nowhere in the house where I can put them up. And speaking of posters the
one that comes with the BiMh 2 of 2 CD set is really nice.

I do understand what you're saying, and to some extent I agree that
Soundgarden records what they like, without regard to what the "suits"
want, or what will be publicly accepted. Obviously I'm not getting
across what I'm really trying to say. Actually I'm not talking about the
business aspect at all, I'm talking about the artistic process. You
mentioned writers block in relation to Drawing Flies, and I can see
that, but I think that relates closely to what I said about the
right-wingers stifling the process with encouraging "self-censorship".
We don't know what was going on with him in his head, and who knows, the
writers block could have come from a struggle with these issues.

Which brings me to the idea of compromise. Even though I've described
the band as uncompromising I'm going to risk being flamed to high heaven
by changing my mind. But before you heat up the flame guns, let me
clarify that. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines compromise as:

a settlement of differences reached by mutual concessions; also: the
agreement thus made

Each and every one of us does this every day, to fit into our families,
jobs, school, society, social groups, whatever. People who don't
generally aren't very nice people. I am absolutely positive that
Soundgarden does it in their daily dealings with each other as well as
other people they know and in their business dealings. Compromise, in
and of itself, is not necessarily a bad thing. And being true to
themselves, hmm, here's another one people won't like. I do think
Soundgarden are being true to themselves now, but I'm not sure they
totally were in the beginning. Again, let me explain. We've had the
discussion of the Chris Cornell as Sex God phenomenon and some people
think he has been subjected to this against his will. I've thought and
thought about this, and I agree with shroom. I think this image was a
carefully calculated one which started with the decision to take him out
from behind the drums. Anyone who is in a band now, or in some other
performance art, must admit that when you get into it you hope for some
level of success. If you didn't you would be content to play in your
basement or your garage. And in order to get recognition sometimes you
do things that are not necessarily bogus, but are a bit out of
character. And I think thats what Soundgarden did, and it worked. Now
they can drop the facade (and mind you, I'm talking about an external
facade, not a musical one) and physically be more themselves, especially
Chris. I read in an article that when Kim first met Chris, Chris
reminded him of "some guy who just got out of the navy or something"
because of his short hair and "slick" clothes (Rolling Stone, July
1992). Hmm, sounds like the long-haired sex god was a bit out of
character for Chris.

I've gone through a real evolution over the last six months in my
Soundgarden mania, and it was very difficult at first. I have all these
old articles and old interviews, etc. and shortly before DOTU came out I
started seeing inconsistencies in the newer interviews. At first I had a
hard time with that, but because I love Soundgarden so much I've come to
accept that they are just human. Without selling out, or becoming
commercial they have evolved and changed, too, but I think they have in
many ways become MORE true to themselves, because now they have the
financial and fan backing to at last totally drop any pretense. I admire
and love Soundgarden with all my heart, but I've become more realistic
in my expectations of them as people.

Sorry for this long post, but I've been waxing philosophical lately. I
would love to hear what other people who have been fans since the early
days think about all this. Although I value the opinions of the newer
fans I don't know if you have really experienced the evolution of the
band like us oldies have. But, jump right in if you like.

Subject: the words you say...

Someone (again, I forget who...sorry) mentioned they were in a
debate over whether BIMH is a heroin song. Taking the risk of overanalyzing
lyrics that are not mine, I would have to say that it is not. It always
seemed to me that song was talking about the truth (being a burden and
such). Once that clicked in my feeble brain, it made the song 10 times more
interesting and relevant in _my_ mind. Besides, remember that interview
where Chris got *really* pissed about people interpreting his lyrics as
being about heroin? After I read that, I scoured my SG collection to see
what I thought. The _only_ song I found that even alludes to heroin was the
FOBD demo. There is a line in there that goes *something* like: "Within the
needle's grip, you feel the wheel slip from your hands. You'll be walking
the devil's dog and carrying his groceries." If that is about heroin, it is
very "anti-". That whole song gets me every time. It is really strange,
BTW, how that song has nothing to do with plain old FOBD and it is
considered a demo. I guess I don't know what else they would call it, but
its not like the difference between Birth Ritual and its demo. Oh my God am
I rambling or what? Anyway, that and She Likes Surprises (believe it or
not) are the two B-sides that make me the happiest. And to throw a curve to
the most recent survey, Flower is the SG disk that makes me the happiest
(even though I stepped on it. :( ) Not my fave, but for some reason, I
always get really excited about hearing those 3 songs in a group.
Uh-oh...note to self: Shut-up!

P.S. Victor, speaking of B-sides, your tape is in the mail, dude. I think
it turned out pretty good, so I hope you like it. SW

with all due respect to mr. cornell, 'say hello 2 heaven' is about the
death of andrew wood, who died from a heroin overdose. therefore it is
TANGENTIALLY a heroin song, but a heroin song nonetheless.

i would perhaps like to offer an interpretation that chris meant that none
of his songs are from the drug user's perspective. i would get angry too
if i read message after message on an email list after someone posted a
flashed out color photograph taken immediately after a show and got seven
zillion 'oh my GOD chris looks so TERRIBLE something must be WRONG'.

i also know from personal experience that many many seattle musicians
loathe and despise the assumption that all musicians here do heroin.
i saw someone on another mailing list try to infer that michael stipe was
in danger because he hangs out in seattle with various musicians and as
you know, all musicians in seattle do heroin.

could we have the context of that quote, please?

My Soundgarden stuff is VERY proudly displayed both at home and at
school. My bedroom has the really big posters of the band and a few
scattered small ones as well. My locker on the other hand looks like as if
it's wall-papered with Soundgarden and Chris Cornell. The door, the
insides, the shelves, EVERTHING! There isn't one single speck of locker
in there. People at my school have now come to refer to my locker as "The
Shrine to Soundgarden". One of my goofy buddies even bows at it when it's
open. Oh well, at least it makes school a somewhat more pleasant place to
go to.....

Subject: Fake Soundgarden?

All this talk about Soundgarden on limited edition vinyl has just reminded
me I need some expert advice or an opinion on a copy of Screaming Life I
have just bought for forty pounds (about 60 dollars?)

It was advertised by Reckless Records in London ( a respected source, I
think!) as one of the orginal 600 copies of Screaming Life that were pressed
in orange vinyl.

I don't normally bother with all the different SG formats/foreign
editions/missprint covers etc- I aready have the songs on the CD - but I
fancied owning my own bit of Soundgarden history.

I bought it mail order and when it arrived it looked suspiciously 'mint'
condition for something that was put out eleven years ago by a small indie
label that no one knew at the time was going to be megabig. I mean, if I'd
heard this great up and coming band from my hometown/state and went out and
bought their record, I'd play it! I wouldn't think, wow, I'm going to save
this, not play it ever and one day it might be worth $60!
Yeah, I know people do that, but with Soundgarden in 87?

It's got PLAY GREEN RIVER and PLAY MALFUNKSHUN scratched in the run off
grooves or whatever they are called. Plus what looks like 28/100 or 28100
and SP12A and SP12B.

I guess I have talked myself into thinking it's a fake, but if anyone can
email me privately and offer an opinion (other than 'You paid how much!?
Idiot!')or give me any hints on what I should be looking for,I would
appreciate it.

Cheers

i hope to high heaven you're kidding. ben and matt do hillbilly stomp
and you RIP 'EM??? shameful... (of course, it could stem from the fact
that i front a roots rock/bluegrass band, but that's beside the point)
actually, i had "blistered" on our set list at one time--right between
"ain't no water in the well" by husker du, and "rio" by duran duran
[don't ask, please...mutant covers are my life] but the song sounded
too much like another song that we do, so it got dropped. maybe i'll
add it again just for spite.) :)

incidentally, my roomate and i were playing "burden" the other night
with mandolin and banjo. god, i wish i would have recorded it. what a

anybody else wonder if sg is going to go more in the direction of
"dusty" on future efforts? that song really whooped me upside the head
when i first heard it, and it still does to some degree -- just
because it's completely different for the band. probably the most
rootsy song they'll ever do, i would wager. although...dotu really
showcased ben's influence, as you all know, and he appears to have some
serious hillbilly stomp runnin' through his veins. who knows?

Yeah, I noticed that and it's very scary!! In past years the bands first
mentioned where made headliners which means Sepultura in this case, you
would think Soundgarden has a bigger following then that!!! So it looks
like SG are not headlinning the last BDO, and not even one of the major
bands if they play!! I guess what this means tho is we get a proper
tour!!!!! With full length shows in small venues :) With the line up so
far of the BDO I am happy with SG doing their own tour. Plus a longer show
in a better venue is always a plus.

So even if they are not playing BDO we may have something to look forward
to anyway :)

I like to concider my bedroom a Soundgarden shrine. I have about 500

I am what you would all refer to as a "newbie", but I hope that does not
disqualify me from telling you about a dream I had. That seems to be the
going thing, and especially if CC is involved.
My phone rang and CC was at the other end. He asked me to come over to
his apartment and give him a haircut. He lived at this joint called
Tanglewood which is in Pulaski, TN (I am from there but NO I am NOT a
racist or a member of the KKK). Anyway, Tanglewood is one of those
rent-based-on-income type of places, and not a place you could picture CC
living. I went over there and proceeded to don a purple smock and cut
his beautiful hair until there was none left. He held me in his lap and
I cried a river--the rest is personal. HEE HEE!
So, can anyone tell me why we humans dream this crazy sh**? I figure I
dreamed it from reading about all of your dreams on the list, thereby
associating it with SG, and of course it may have something to do with
the fact that the last thing I see every night is SG. The haircut part
is because I am a shampoo assistant in a salon, I guess.
Anyway, thanks for listening, if you want to call it that.

song (i use the word "meaning" loosely, i believe you shouldn't try to
figure out what the song meant to the lyricist, but think about what the
song means to you cuz that's really what matters). there are times when
the lyrics have no meaning to me, they are just another element of the song
(the voice as another instrument) but the music makes me love the song, but
that is very rare. then there are songs that i can relate to the lyrics,
but i don't like the overall music/vocals (like "no attention", i can get a
personal feeling about the lyrics but i don't like the song much). so,
what i am trying to say is, yes- the lyrics are of great importance to me.

SOUNDGARDEN is NEVER violent! A lot of people take it for granted, but Chris
Cornell is a masterful and soulful poet. Take it from someone who writes for
a living, Chris is a fucking genius. And for those of you SOMMERS who think
Chris' lyrics don't have any specific meanings, I think you're wrong. I
believe, and it is only my opinion, that Chris puts a helluva a lot of
thought & soul into every word he writes. Just check out Flutter Girl,
Overfloater, Searching with my Good Eye Closed, Holy Water, Room A Thousand
Years Wide. The man is brilliant.

Besides, as a poet myself, I'll be the first to tell you college professors

As the designated "list hootchie," I'm here to support my fellow KTMS
member, Aaron Something-or-Other for SOMMS Sheriff (I'm sure the man has a
last name, so don't worry about it). Not only is he the meanest hombre this
side of... somewhere... but he's also a tyrant, and like the man said... he
accepts bribes! What more could you ask for in a Sheriff? I mean, if you're
gonna get busted for doing something wrong on the list... who else would you
rather have performing that full cavity body search on ya? ;-) Well, maybe
Chris Cornell... but he's kinda busy on tour right now, dammit. Heheheh...
LIST THUG FOR SOMMS SHERIFF!!!

Ummm... I have a question for that girl Gemma who took the picture of
Chris and Matt. First of all... that picture fucking RULES!!! Chris
sprawled out on a COUCH?!?!? AAUUUGGHH!!! How could you control yourself,
girl?? Jeez... talk about the ultimate temptation!! How could MATT control
himself?! Mmmm... Chris... laying down. I would have lasted maybe two
minutes, TOPS. Heheheh... 'what would YOU do?' That's gotta be the next
SOMMS shirt, dammit. Okokok... on to the question. Is Matt just looking at
his hand in that picture, or is he smoking? Tell us, Gemma... you're the
only person who knows (well, except for Mattster, but he ain't here). Give
us all the gory details! GOD... Chris laying down on a COUCH. Sorry...

you don't know who Hiro is... never mind.) I'd LOVE to check them out... so
I'm thinking that maybe we can all meet at the OK, and then move over to the
Sit n Spin later. Or else we can all just meet at the Sit n Spin (which
would make more sense, I guess). I really really really hope you people want
to check out Truly, too. I haven't heard 'em yet... but I'd LOVE to see
'em... and maybe meet Hiro? That would be too groovy!! IN TWO WEEKS, I'LL

OK SOMMERS I'm a newbie, but I'm not a band wagon jumper and I'm not a
teenager I've loved SG since the 80's.

But being new, I have a few questions that I', wondering if any of you
generous souls will help me with. I collect all of their music I can get my
hands on (Iknow, I know, big surprise) I'm not really into limited edition
vinyls and stuff but I want copies off all the individual music I can get
(you know, B-sides, rareites, etc)

I used to have SOMMs but it was stolen out of my car in 1993 & I haven't been
able to find it since. I would be grateful for even a "RECORDING" which I'd
gladly pay for or trade for. I'd also love a CD if I can get connected to
one.

I also would love the Rusty Cage CD & the single as well as Outshined.

Currently I waiting for my BIMH to come in at Graywhale in Salt Lake.

Also, I'm looking for a copy of teh "Louder than Live" video.

Would anyone be kind enuf to help me?????????????

thanx

[fantasizing deleted]

the better picture of the band is the one on gemma's member directory
page. i haven't really seen chris do anything funny in any pictures
recently (see the 'hands all over' 10" photos and the picture of the
band from guitar for the practicing musician 9/90 for some good
entertainment). i guess magazines would rather focus on his depressed
side, since it better serves their purpose of portraying him as a
miserable poet.

hmmm, what this world needs is an unofficial soundgarden faq.

<checking calendar>

if you're not busy on monday, swing on down to the unofficial
soundgarden homepage bar and grill. i hear they serve a mean faq...

it was kinda sexy, wasn't it?

<caryn ducks flying keyboards from cambridge>

i have to go see gemma's pic with the band... didn't realize it was in the
member directory. vikki ALSO has a cool pic... now she can lose that one
with the stuffed rat. (or whatever it is) also -- VIKKI! you don't live
in brooklyn any more!

and on the same subject, seth, do we still need to have nothingman's entry

if we're meeting ANYWHERE, it'll be at the croc or the lava lounge, or at
mama's for dinner. you don't do pioneer square and belltown in the same
evening. stay tuned for further updates -- now that i've rescured shroom

Howdy all,

Today tickets go on sale for next year's Big Day Out concerts around =
Australia. (our equivalent to Lolla). Yahoo. Definitely playing are =
Sepultura, Offspring (yippee), The Prodigy (again), Supergrass and my =

NO mention of Soundgarden. Now, some of you listers a while back said =
that SOUNDGARDEN was a confirmed starter for the Big Day Out. Where did =
you get your info from????? Of course there are still more bands to be =
confirmed (33 bands in all last year, so there's plenty of room for more =
as yet)......I'm hoping Soundgarden will be one. Can anyone tell me =
that they know FOR SURE that SG will be there?
