Alright, all this shit about newbies is pissing me off. Yes I am new to
this list, I may be a teenager but I am not ignorant nor am I new to SG. I
have been listening to them since '90, even when my family thought I was
satanic. Onto the ignorent thing. When people think of teenagers, they
automatically think of ignorance. I am in high school but am taking 3
college classes and plan to get my PHD. I am either going to William and
Mary, Washington and Lee or Baylor. All of which require some intelligence.
I also scored close to perfect on my SATs and SAT 2's. I am not a braggard.
I am just trying to get my point across that not all newbies are stupid.
That was a rash generalization no matter how much beer you pounded. Yes I
have pissed people off on the list but a lot of that was misconceptions.
When I joined I did skim through the archives to get an idea of people. I
have no tatoo. I do have earrings though. I think eyebrow rings look cool
but would never get one because it is not me.
Just venting, flame if you wish.

You (the collective conscious of the SOMMS mailing list) will have plenty of
time, as this will be quite long term, because mid-terms are coming up for
me, so I've been getting project after project and am myself a ways behind
on my SOMMS mail . . . so people that haven't sent yours in yet, come on!
It's not too late!

I don't estimate a deadline until about the end of October/beginning of

Well, I've never really listened that closely to the bassline on BIMH, but
there is one song on DOTU that I do truly love the bassline for, and that is:
Overfloater. Just that bassline during the chorus ("I'm on the wire...").
For that part, the bassline really stands out. Otherwords, being my
guitarring self, I just focus on the guitars.

Oh, and I also think the bass stands out a bit on She Likes Surprises, but
not as much . . .

Ok, here it is: Anybody subscribe to Guitar magazine? If so, then check out
November's issue (which I just recieved today), page 172. The review of No
Code (don't worry, this IS SG-related!). Follow me down to the first
sentence of the last paragraph. And here it is, for those of you who don't
have it right now:
"The band still rocks on "Hail, Hail" and the pounding, angry
"Habit," which sounds like it could be Soundgarden."

Do any of you No-Code owners agree/disagree with this? I myself don't see
this similarity . . . Habit's probably my 3rd LEAST favorite song on No
Code, after Around the Bend and Lukin . . . hmmm . . .

Wow! Talking about Pearl Jam and No Code, while still focusing on
Soundgarden! It's a miracle folks! How does he do it?

1 When/where/how do I get tickets for SG in SF?? I don't want to miss out!
(of course, I don't think I have to worry about them selling out around here
. . . but still...)

In a desperate attempt to spur a new thread, i am wondering if this

Subject: My 2 cents

I have a really good friend that met the band and Jeff Ament at
this year's Lolla in NYC. And his impression of the band was really
cool. He said that they were just a bunch of really great guys who play
really great music. He said that Chris was very shy and not the kind of
person who you would even think twice about if you didn't recognize him
as the frontman for this rock entity we call Soundgarden. This is all
coming from one of the biggest Soundgarden fans that I know. I wish that
people would stop trying to idealize these people as some kind of
ultramega rock star image. That died in the 80's, let it stay there. I
am posting becuase there is something that inherently bothers me about
people who screetch at the top of their lungs and flash their breasts at
the four guys on stage. The band gives us music and some of the fans try
to take more than that, while comprimising the show for the people who
want to see a great band perform.
This is not to say that I have not met some of the coolest people
at the shows(old school punkers, hippies, headbangers, and LAWYERS). It
just seems that this form of music especially is becomming overrun by
some who just don't get what it is all about. It is all about words,
music, and a common ground.
				--Mike Groark

I would love to meet all of you that are going to the Brandies show. I
am planning on going to other shows, too but this is the only one that I
currently have tickets for.

Subject: mercury in retrograde

Hey List! It's Tuesday, another day, let's try to forget yesterday!

To make a little light of the subject of the heaviness of yesterday....does
anyone know--is Mercury in retrograde????

I'm serious! This is something Karen Cornell brought ot our attention
almost a year ago. My friend Lin had locked her keys in her car, something
she'd never done. Her copier blew up at work, my computers were all
misbehaving, my car acted up, and on and on. Karen called for a chat and
Lin related all this to her, and she said Peter had locked HIS keys in his
van, and all this other stuff had happened....then she said "Well, what do
you expect--Mercury is in retrograde and it's really bad this time." That
phemon influences machinery, she informed us, to break down or not operate
properly, for one thing. There were other influences too....seems to me
something along the lines of you just feel like you aren't functioning
properly, out of sorts, etc. Friday I had a terrible day w/ my computers,
Monday we were all grumpy and growly....I blame it on Mercury. It'll pass
in a few days....in fact, I feel the fog has lifted quite a bit today. Test
the theory! Besides...it's a great excuse for bad things happeneing and
machines not functioning!

Hope that brought a smile to your collective faces! ciao....deb

I don't think it has been cleared up entirely. I would imagine that if
it says "Limited Edition", it must be, whether it is 1 000 copies or
1 000 000 copies. I have not seen a vinyl copy of DOTU in record stores
around here in months, although I did see a copy at the music collector's
convention I attended this weekend. It was priced for $10CDN more than I
paid for mine. Does anybody remember the number of these vinyl's that
was quoted by the fanclub? 60 000 or 100 000?? Or was 60 000 for the
digipack? Anybody?

I think you know who I am talking about, hmm... do I really need to make a
list all most all death meatal bands sing about it, deicide, slayer, venom.
to name a few. Not that this is a bad part of death metal music, it is
just a charistic of it.
To say that grunge is a style of music is dumb. The music like all music
borrows from certain scences here in thier. Most of the earlier grunge was
more heavy metal type. But it was nothing like the mainstream.
To say that bands from seattle are rock bands is stupid. There are to many
kinds of rock to say that.
If grunge never was popular, and doesn't exist, why do christians feel a
need to copy it?

The one used vinyl/cd place I frequent the most still has about a dozen of
the black vinyl copies and one clear one. Last time I was record hunting
in San Francisco/Berkeley there were at least a few of the black vinyl
DotU's in each store I went to (4 in SF, 3 in Berk), so I would guess
there are plenty still available. A&M wouldn't exaggerate at all about
the limited availability of the vinyl, would they? Don't get me wrong,
though, I don't care, I would still have purchased both vinyl and cd even
if they pressed a billion of the damn things.

For anyone who listens to that bandwagon station KROQ, they are giving away
SG "party in the pit" tickets starting Tuesday evening at 6pm, when the DJ
Carson is on. In addition, if you win the tickets, you are entered into a
drawing to get a guitar autographed by the band. Too cool a prize for a
bandwagon radio station, but hey--get the prize first and curse them later.

Hhhmmmm...I agree, SG has some of the most open and diverse lyrics,
attitudes, that we will hear today, but, what (if not the nay-saying or
right-winging fundamentalists) would or could possibly hold them back??
Let's face it, people who hold those tried and "true" beliefs are still
putting pressure on us (more specifically the artists) through record
companies, television, radio, school, etc. I mean, why is it that my 17
year old nephew had to ask me to buy LTL for him?? Because he was too
embarrassed?? Yeah, right.... I don't think SG would have had it that
way. I'm not saying that SG is holding back, I have no idea about that.
But think about it....have times changed that much from when Jim
Morrison wasn't supposed to say "girl we couldn't get much higher" on
national t.v. to now, when we won't even allow kids (specifically in
the U.S.) to even purchase semi-contraversial albums?? It's just a new
wave of right wing fundamentalism, to me anyway. I'm hoping that SG has
managed to avoid most of it, but, I think every artist has to be
influenced by it otherwise they may drift into oblivion.

# of digipak copies of DotU: unknown
# of jewelbox copies: Everything released after the alloted # of
digipaks (they exist...I've seen them)

Regular vinyl copies of DotU contain a yellow sticker with black
writing. From top to bottom, It says:
Soundgarden
Down on the Upside
Limited Edition Vinyl
31454 0526 1 STO1
Printed in the USA

Should be selling for $10-$15 (american)

Clear vinyl copes of DotU contain an orange-ish sticker with black
writing. From top to bottom, It says:

Limited Edition
Gatefold Clear Vinyl
540 558-1

Should be selling for $17-$25 (american)

Note: the vinyl (sleeves) with the lyrics printed on them are made of a
thicker paper than the american black vinyl release.

Ok. There has been a lot of buzz generated since that whole Brian/Shroom

called life. Brian, with all respect, maybe you should have kept this between
you and her. It is none of our business. I think that is why so many of
us find it sad. As for the state of the list, I think some of you are
going a bit overboard. The list is fine. Yeah it has some unexperienced newbies
who tend to shout their mouths off and yeah it can get offtopic sometimes,
but there are too many of us who care about this list to let it all go down
the tube. I have been part of somms for about 2 years, unsubbing once. I have
seen the list get *much* worse than this and it has survived. This is
nothing. Look, we have something really special here. I know this is going to

Well although I believe that people can read their own personal meanings
into lyrics, I agree with what you've said. You do get these people who,
having purchased a new album start dissecting and analysing the lyrics
straight away, hoping to gain some sort of deep and meaningful insight
into the writer's words. People that think that with their own
superficial definitions and conclusions, and with a few healthy logical
leaps here and there they can understand what was going through the
writer's head at the time of writing which, is of course ridiculous.

Nobody can ever get inside another person's head to know why they do
something. A classic example is "Like Suicide". A lot of people thought
it was some deep and meaningful song attributing the course of love to
suicide and suchlike. I even read in magazines over here where people
(and that is, music journalists) assumed the song was about Kurt Cobain's
suicide!! Then, when you find out the song's about a bird that flew into
Chris' window and lay half dead on his balcony, it makes you laugh at all
the cod-psychologists and lyrical suregons (as in people who have to take
every song apart word by word to find its true meaning - whatever that is).

I happen to know what I'm talking about as well. I've written
songs (I was in a band for a brief time), and some of the songs were
ambiguous to say the least, but it didn't stop friends and other people
reading things into them and trying to analyse my thoughts. I had people
saying to me "Well, you say that's not what the song's about, but
subconsciously, it may have been so..." or "Their may be the underlying
subtext which is rooted deep in your subconscious...". Yeh, give
someone a lyric and they suddenly become a psychologist. That's why I
used to especially enjoy writing obscure songs which weren't about
anything and watching people try to dissect them. They'd come to me with
their meanings and I'd just say "Well, actually that song's about the
time I sat on some freshly chewed up bubblegum and it spoiled my clothes
and not a heatfelt cry for help at my supposed inner pain and suffering".

Or something.

I'm back again. It's me the unofficial keeper of the PN & BIMH number UK 7"
list. If you or anyone you know has either of these, please contact me &
include the number of the record. The BIMH list should be longer. I know
for a fact Mr Steven Russell has one, just not sure the number. So if Steven
or any other PN or BIMH owners that don't appear on the lists below could be
email me I'd be appreciated. Ironic thing... they call them 'seven inch'
records & they're from the UK. Shouldn't it be called a "17 centimeter"
record since the English (like the rest of the World) use the metric system?

i'm kinda new....although i subscribed last school year.
what's up with some of these people?
i mean, why worry about who dresses like what, and who is "ruining" the
list.
it's a soundgarden newsletter, for god's sake.
not a space to settle personal vendettas, it's just a place to talk
about music and stuff.
if my theory is wrong, and this IS a place to fight, then that's pretty
sad.

Anyways.......
anyone here dig I Mother Earth?
they are the best Canadian band, next to The Tea Party
I mostly listen to canadian bands, but sg is definitely the best
american band around.....(that's my little sg-lover plug)

just a question.....
because i am new to the list, i am a little kid, with no knowledge of
the "internet"????
please...try not to flatter me too much.

do i have to use the right "internet lingo" and stuff to be accepted
here?
do i have to agree with everything the "veterans" say to be accepted
here?
do i have to be a "normal" person, or a "radical" person to be accepted
here?

wow.......i got one word:
shallow.

there. my tirade is done.
i'm here to interact with "people" and voice my opinion.
i'm not full of angst or anything.
i'm a 19 year old dude who loves music to the point of addiction
(this is beginning to rhyme)
i'm outta here......
