of going to Soundgarden's show. They still haven't started selling in LA

As promised, I added the scans of the cover of the Hype! soundtrack
and the photo of Kim in the liner notes to the Web page (that's
www.sgi.net/soundgarden/images/hype1.jpg and hype2.jpg). I also added
the cover of the Rockview interview CD that was mentioned here a few
days ago and the photos from the liner notes (rv1.jpg, rv2.jpg,
rv3.jpg, rv5.jpg, rv6.jpg). Dedicated pages with more detail on both
CDs are forthcoming.

The real gems in tonight's additions are a whole bunch of photos that
Vikki took of Soundgarden in Barcelona. Some *great* pictures of Chris
and Kim signing autographs, a couple of excellent stage shots, Susan
behind the soundboard, and some miscellany. If you don't want to go
searching through the image pages to find them, the filenames are
barc1.jpg, barc2.jpg, barc-chris1.jpg, barc-chris2.jpg,
barc-chris3.jpg, barc-chris4.jpg, barc-kim.jpg, barc-susan.jpg, and
barc-map.jpg. I'll stick the photo of Vikki and Kim together on her
member directory profile tomorrow.

Last but not least in the images department is a photo of Chris at age
5 from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum that Vikki took. It's
1969.jpg if you're interested.

In other news, full-length video clips of "Pretty Noose" and "Burden
In My Hand" from Saturday Night Live are in the house and ready to go,
courtesy of Geoff; I just haven't had a chance to update the video
clip page yet, but I'll get to it tomorrow.

Also, those of you who were waiting with baited breath for the October
4th debut of the FAQ, you'll have to wait a bit longer. I've assigned
a team of monkeys to work on it 'round the clock, so hopefully it'll
be ready to go early next week. :)

First of all I want to say that I was not offended by what BdMtrFngr
said. It is true that the average 40-something does not listen to SG,
Nirvana, or AIC and I understand that the point was not really age, but
ignorance of a particular type of music. But since I am one of the list
members that fit into the 40 plus category, I guess I will put in my bit
about the age thing anyway.

A few years ago, before the Seattle bands made it big, I played LTL for
the 14 year old son of one of our friends. Because he was really into
music and liked a lot of hard rock bands, I thought he might like
Soundgarden. I told him that I really like this band which probably
turned him off to them right away since I am easily old enough to be his
mother and what the hell would I know about good music?! Anyway, after
listening to only a few seconds of Loud Love, he pronounces with a smug
little laugh, I think Ill stick to Guns n Roses. Well, what kind of
music do you think he listens to NOW? You guessed it--SG, Nirvana, AIC,
etc. and of course he loathes GNR!

My point, if I have one, is that being closed-minded has nothing to do
with your age. Yes, I lot of people in my age group consider SGs brand
of music just so much noise. But I find that many young people are just
as narrow-minded. Unfortunately, a lot of folks believe that the only
good music is what THEY like and the rest is crap. I can understand
this tendency, but I try really hard not to be that way because I know
how annoying it is for someone to stand there and make ugly faces while
you are listening to a song that you think is fantastic. Wouldnt the
world would be a better place if we all tried to be a little more
broad-minded?

To all you people who complained about the 'wrong' type of radio station
overplaying SG...Try living in Oasisland and you would be grateful that your
radio stations overplayed BUTOW or anything by Soundgarden!

We had one measly national rock show on Radio One and they've axed that; we
had Noisy Mothers on TV - now that's gone. Luckily (!?) I have MTV so I can
at least check out Headbanger's Ball.

BTW, if anyone in the UK or anywhere in Europe has MTV and a teletext
television, could they please look up MTV pages 281 and 289 and tell me (and
the rest of us Euro-sommsters) if Soundgarden are scheduled for HB Ball in
the next few weeks. Some time back they asked for people to send in
questions for the band. My tv is being repaired, or I would look this up
myself. Cheers.

Overall, I was a little disappointed.

First of all, bhs was overplayed, but i still turn the tv up to full
volume if the video ever comes on....i also don't skip it when i listen to
SU.. Now, butow, i loved that song ever since i heard a clip of it on the
1-800 number thingy. And BIMH, well, i used to not like it because i knew
it would get overplayed, but now i don't care and i love the song anyway.
It just sticks in your head. So i think i have to agree with the guy who
says to forget the radio stations ("turn on the radio, nah, f#*k it, turn
it off") because in this day of sucky music and over repetition, you can't
let some boss dictated playlist choose your music for you. Be aggressive.
Choose your own music.

Second of all, there is a lot of poppy crap today compared to 2 or 3 years
ago when at least half of everything was nice and HEAVY. Why could this
be? Let's see, i'll wager that it's because radio stations are trying to
get themselves played in certain places of business (including retail
stores, grocery stores, etc.) and they intentionally keep the playlists
soft to be "right" for the environment they are trying to be played in.
Think of how many more listeners radio stations recieve if they are
broadcast to all the people who entert a business....

Ok, on to otras cosas. I saw the HYPE soundtrack yesterday, but it was
kinda expensive, so i didn't bother. Somebody tell me if it's worth $15.
Also, i noticed there was a song by the U-Men. The other other place i've
seen a U-Men song was on Deep Six, and i love that song. What i want to
know is if anyone knows where i can find more U-Men music. I checked both
the local record stores yesterday and found nada. So ayuda is very much
appreciated. Gracias. laters. -j

Oh and that's it? So Grunge is exists because of some mystical fourty

Thank you very much for writing such an intelligent and well-written
response on the whol Grunge thing. Out of everybody whose contributed to
this thread, your words have been the only ones that have made any real
sense. So far we've had "Grunge exists because some mystical fourty year
old says so (or probably would say so, which is even worse)", we've had
"Grunge exists because Soundgarden joined a major
label before Nirvana" ; arguments and theories that have no real logical
connection or root so it makes a change to read something that actually
makes sense.

Also, I agree with everything you've said about the
attitdue being the determinant of so-called "Grunge", but wasn't this
also the same attitude that determined "Punk" (in its true sense, not the
diluted, repackaged trendy crap around these days) - as in no bullshit
image, the music being the only thing that spoke? By that I'm not saying
that all these Seattle bands are in fact Punk (although a lot of them
were influenced by it ie Sonic Youth, Mudhoney and Nirvana to name but
three), but when you look at it like that, it doesn't say much for the
validity (or reliability) of labels, but what you say, however does have
some
relevance. Perhaps Grunge did exist, but it was an attitude rather than
a style of music. I prefer not to use the label myself, whatever the
theory - it's too stigmatised, and to my mind, "Grunge" will always be
just another stupid tag-name given to a bunch of bands by the ignorant
music press. The only real "Grugne" bands are the ones that invented the
music by *trying* to copy all the Seattle bands by taking all their
individual sounds and combining them to make their own. Plagarist bands
like "Bush" or "Stone Temple Pilots". I know there are fans of these
bands on this list and I do apologise if I have offended anybody, but
that's just the way I see these bands. They have provided nothing
worthwhile to the music world, they've just ripped other people off,
trying to cash in on a popular trend at the time.

Anyway, I'm going to stop now, 'cos I want to get on with reading
the rest of my mail messages!! Again, thank you Chris for writing such a
clear, valid and intelligent argument.

But if we're going to do that, one could trace the back to the root of
those two bands and from that trace back even further ad infinitum until
the definitive root is reached whereupon the so-called "Grunge" bands

Say'... Right from the start... from the 3 prevailing "OOOHHs!" to the
almost maniacal "Nothing!" that succedes the second verse... Have you
ever heard a singer be that out of hand??? it's great... that is the
spirit of Soundgarden...
A couple of other "SG Moments"...
!) when Kim lets loose at the begining of HandOfGod.
2) the third verse of JCP when cornell's voice is "Effected"
3) in overfloater, 2nd verse, prechorus when cornell screams 'wanna make
it right...' into Kim's solo...
4) In Like Sucide, when cornell screams into Kim's solo...
5) the first verse of Room A thousand years wide's, "HEEEYYYY!!!"
6) the "whoa" at the very beginning of Full on Kevin's Mom...
7) and the "yeahh!!" at the end of Wooden jesus
8) and the bigger "YEAHHHH!!!" at the end of Pretty Noose...

That is what SG is to me... those moments when you can stand up and
scream... those moments probably share the same amount of adrenaline as
it takes to charge a bunker in Vietnam... thank god, my generation has
yet to experience a real ground war... but if I was on the battle
lines... I'd have a walkman playing Birth Ritual...

I was just pondering a thought... I can see why I like SG in many
ways... but then my girlfriend complains when I play it constantly...
she's likes SG sometimes, but is really into the sarah mclachlan/Sundays

me... What I am wondering is as follows: Do men and women like SG for
the same reasons?, I would originally give an opinion of "NO" to this

the female... and dare I say i will ever understand them? AAARGHHH!!

ARGH!! mothers can play the MEANEST jokes on their children!! today i
sent my mom out to get me my tickets for the Nov 21 show at the
Electric factory in philly, and freaked out on any listening ears all
day long. so, i get home and my mom is standing at her car. so i look
at her and she makes this face and goes "i was there TWO hours and i
was the first person in line, and as soon as i got upstairs and they
opened the terminal, the concert was sold out." okay, so now i'm a
combination of pissed totally and completely upset and sad. so i go
into the house, ignoring a sign on the door that said something about
"did i get them or didn't i? check the john" cause i figured she'd
done that before she left. so i go in my room and rip down the little
sign i had made in my excitement last month and then in curiousity go
look at that sign on the door again. so i check the bathroom and
there's another sign "well you don't really think i'm gonna make this
easy do you? try the television." so i think "what?" and go up and
check the TV and guess what? another sign: "OK- not here either- are
you in a tizzy yet...no? well, try my dresser." so i go in my parents
room and search for the tickets or a sign or something and it's on
the mirror and this one says: "Now why would i put the tickets here?
let me see now-- let's try the microwave." ARGH! now i'm a
combination of "she'd really better now be fucking with me" and
totally excited. so i get to the microwave and open it and yet again
i find a sign: "Come on niki- do you think i would leave them here?
suppose we had a freak electrical storm and the oven accidentally
nuked yr tickets. so now try the one place in the house _other_
_than_yr_room_ that you spend so much time in! ask the mouse!" so now
i'm totally spazzing out and i run into my computer room and i pick
up the mouse pad and lo and behold there is a little white envelope
with advertisements on it and i open it up just to check and make
sure i'm not hallucinating and oh my god!!!! there's 4 tickets for
soundgarden inside!!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! i didn't know how to react
so i ran to the door and yelled "that's SO MEAN! you don't play
tricks on people like that!!" and then proceed to scream and jump
around in a circle like a raving lunatic. woo hoo! i'm going to see
my first SG concert on November 21, 1996!!!!! WOO HOO!!!
why am i raving about this to you guys? well, cause my friends are
totally tired of hearing about it and do nothing but roll their eyes
anymore. you guys...well you guys know what it's like to be obsessed!

Creamed spinach sounds nice, but from the looks of Chris in Vikkie's
pictures I would say he needs more than that. Man looks really bad.. How
about a fresh salad with blue cheese dressing to begin with, then a main
course of Southern Fried Chicken, a baked potatoes, Toni's creamed spinach
all washed down with a tall cool glass of beer. And don't forget the hot
apple pie with a slice of cheese on top (Apple pie with out cheese is like
a hug without a squeeze)!!!

Hey MS. Silver your man needs some attentions, if you don't want the job I
think there are more than a few on this list that will treat him fine..
:-)

Must say Kim looked good.. Thanks for the pictures Vikkie can't wait for
the story please soon!!!

Fellow list members,

This is your List Thug calling. IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP!!! Why is *grunge* still
being talked about. Who cares what it's called. I don't care, and you
shouldn't either. It could be called NeoPostSabbath for all intents and
purposes, it really doesn't matter. So, if you still feel compelled to
discuss this "Overblown" subject any further, get it the hell off the list,
and keep it amongst yourselves.

After Bonnie tried to feed me raw meat, I contracted Mad Cow Disease, and
will go psycho if this grunge thing goes any farther.

Oh, and by the way, if anyone knows of a good hotel in Chicago, let me know.

stupid did that sound?)

Hi fellow sommsters people,

I was one of those people who showed up late n didn't get
tickets. The lady in front of me said she reserved hers. Well, if
anybody happend to get an extra ticket that they don't need please I
beg of you please. Email me I will be happy to reemborse you. Or else
I guess I will have stand out side n cry. sniff. This is always how it
goes now if Soundgarden weren't so popular n everybody didn't
advertise this I would have a ticket right now but people can't keep
this a secert. Gee I have to start liking unpopular bands. Hmmmmmmm
maybe I'll go get something done with my HAIR. That's it everybody who
can't get tickets go get a Hair weave or a perm or something. My
pathetic way of protesting.

I don't know anything about Waxie Maxies, but I just got a call that my
special order of Hater came in today. I ordered if from Rainy Day
Records in Olympia, I think just last week. So I was pleasantly
surprised it was here already. So, it doesn't appear to be totally out
of print, just wherever that store gets their music from maybe?? I
don't know how it works.

I'd suggest calling other music stores in your area.

Ha!! I thought that when I first got it, too! But then I started
drooling over the little picture of Stoney on the other side, so I forgot
about it. If it's NOT Matt... then we've got a Matt lookalike running around
in Seattle somewhere. Heheheh... It's true, that person DOES have the same
facial structure as Mattster. The cheeks, nose, and lips all look the same.
The hair is the only part that throws it off. Matt usually doesn't let his
hair get that long. BUT WAIT A MINUTE!!! If that's really Matt... WHERE'S
his sideburns?!? Heheheh... okokok... I'll admit it... I have no fucking
idea if it's Matt. But it darned sure looks like him.

Back to "Never the Machine Forever." I was only halfway listening to it
this afternoon while I was working, and I misheard the lyrics. Tell me if
I'm wrong about this, but when Chris sings "Mecurial mind the fire..." if
you didn't KNOW what he was singing... wouldn't it sound like "Kill your
mother and father..." For a minute, that's what I THOUGHT Chris sang!! It
really freaked me out, and I had to go back and listen to it a couple of
times just to make sure that I was just hearing wrong. "Kill your mother and
father." Hmmm... it's the drugs, I swear it. Listen to the damned song!!
It sounds like Chris is telling you to kill your parents!! AAAUUUGGHHH!!!
WRONG KIND OF SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES, BABE!! I'm fine... really.

One last thing... I heard from Vikki yesterday, and she told me that
Inflatable Soule will be playing in Tacoma on the night of Friday, October
25th. In case some of you have forgotten, that's when us Sommsters in
Seattle are supposed to meet at the OK Hotel. BUT I'd REALLY like to see IS,
too. I haven't even heard their music yet, and everyone keeps raving about
them. So I propose that we meet early at the OK, and then take the 'party'
out to the IS show. =) We need to do some planning people!! Only 19 days
until I leave for Seattle, and I'm damned anxious!! I'M ON MY WAY CHRIS!!!
I'LL BE THERE SOON MATT!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! Damn, I'm smooth. ;-)

spots." ~ Chris Cornell

Hey Chitown sommsfest attendees. I have made some calls regarding hotels.
And the range in price is varied. The best location for someone visiting
is probably North Michigan Ave. Lots of hotels, resteraunts shops, bars
(singles bars) But the prices are steep. There is nothing around the
Aragon unless you fancy staying in a transient hotel! I need to know what
you require in a hotel. I will have a list of hotels and prices tommorrow
afternoon. If you need some info e-mail me privately and I will send it to
you. Still in the process of finding a location for us all to meet. I also
need to know what kind of time frame we are talking here. How early does
everyone want to get down to the Aragon??? toni
