I'm from Milwaukee. Originally Lazer103 was this heavy rock station, and
dabbled with a lot of metal too. Now they call themselves a "Pure Rock"
station. Ha! More like "Pure Butt-rock"! They stopped playing old Soundgarden,
and occasionally I hear Fell on Black Days, but mostly now it is BUTOW. The
stange thing is that they still play a lot of Metallica...so why can't they
slip in a Rusty Cage or Kevin's Mom, eh? Well, we know where their motivation
lies...$$$. The other station, "NewRock 102.1" only plays shit alternative
like No Doubt, Green Day ect. And it really pisses me off when they stick SG
in the same class by playing BUTOW or Burden, which in my opinion are not
characteristic of our favorite band at all...There are really no good stations
here except for 96WKLH which plays Pink Floyd and Zeppelin occasionally, and
this blues station. I don't think there are ANY good stations in the country
anymore. My Aunt always tells me about how the alternative stations in L.A.
during the late 80's kicked ass when she lived there...But they're gone now...

Subject: arguing about a label

Howdy fellow listers! I have a few free minutes now so I thought I'd jump
in w/ my 30 liras worth--aka 2 cents--on this whole grunge label, what is
what isn't thing.

First of all, thanks, Toni, for defending those of us who are actually
adults on this list and for doing it so humourously! If the strained peas
are waiting for you, then listers better remember how old the Gardeners are!
BdMtrFgnr, that was really a cut to say play the music to some old guy in
his 40's! You think it's all an age thing? I have to disagree loudly!

Nate said it well when he said how up until 4 years ago it all sounded like
so much noise to him. Nate, my man, well put, b/c I said the same thing
back in 92 when a friend was trying to get me into PJam by playing Ten
whenever she could. It was just so much noise to me.....BECAUSE OF WHAT I
WAS USED TO LISTENING TO! I have since developed much more eclectic tastes,
but still have a tendency towards well-produced, smooth sounding bands w/
what I call a BIG sound...clean, clear, etc. So this "grunge" stuff was
quite a change.

It's been raised on the list that Sg isn't a grunge band. Do any of these
bands really want that label? It would be interesting to find that out.
Yes, I agree it is an attitude more than a sound. If I had to come up w/
some other label for Sg I'd say metal, but w/ a difference. Maybe
intelligent metal or something b/c of the lyrics and some of the music.

Is it really so important to label a band tho? I like some that I can't
classify but some of them happen to be Seattle bands. Inflatable Soule is
NOT grunge in any way, shape or form...unless you look at how a couple of
the members dress and even then grunge is not something that comes to mind.
50 Paces is another example--they aren't a metal band, they don't play
typical grunge stuff. Sweet Water...Sky Cries Mary...Seattle bands but not
"grunge". I guees the point I'm trying to make is this--is it really so
important that:

A) we come up w/ a label and
B)we even have agreement in some of this stuff?

I say that b/c a few of these little discussions have been a tad disturbing
in that there's a few people who come right and say someone's OPINION is
WRONG. It's an opinion and opinions aren't things that are right or wrong.
It may be different from yours, but since when does that make it wrong? And
here's the usual disclaimer that all of this is MHO, think what you will,
comments would be welcomed! have a day....ciao...deb

Subject: Underplayage now/Radio

        Hello
This is going to sound backwards, I'm sure, but I would kill to have a radio
station that played a lot of SG. You see, I live in the dairy state, and
there are more country stations here than even pop radio. There is one
station (93.7 The Edge) that plays stuff from SU or DOTU every so often, but
they are more interested in Alanis and junk like that. Yuck Yuck Yuck. Is
it too much to ask for a little rock and roll every now and then? These
radio people must be aware that there's a huge market for this.
I'm afraid that as "alternative" radio moves closer and closer to
being cheese again, I will be stranded in the wilderness of big trucks and
cheap beer without a lifeline.
Two questions for anyone in my listening area (please, thank you).
                1. Does REV 105 have a better playlist than the edge? I have
heard it both ways. Do they have any plans to boost their
signal so I can actually listen to them? That would be nice.

                2. Wisconsin people: What is the frequency for that station
near Marshfield that mixes up 70's stuff with 90's? Last time
I was down there I heard them play Pretty Noose then jump
right into Tom Petty (the man). Now *that* is a radio station.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
        A different Seth

P.S. The Dairy State. Gawd. You can't imagine how embarrassing that is.
Why not the Beer State. That would be O.K.

Of course. I think that a lot of people love bass. It's just that bass
is just kind of, well, subconscious(for me, anyway). Especailly when a
band has such an excellent bassist as Ben Sheperd, the bass just kind of
blends into the rest, giving the song a more soulful, deeper feel. In
my opinion, the guitar is to the body as the bass is to the soul. Of
course, that's not always the case, sometimes the guitar can have as
much or more to do with the "soul" of the song ("Like Suicide", acoustic
version, is a good example) as the bass. Or maybe I'm just fucked up.

hairy eyeball continued this thought most eloquently, but in the
interest of brevity I won't re-post his entire message. I think his
opinion is clear in the above.

I agree with many of his points but not with his overall conclusion. I
should start by saying that I am no musicologist. I cannot speak with
the certainty of a teacher of music, but I know what I hear and I know
what I like. Music is a wonderful paradox. On the one hand it is
purely mathematical, and objective. You can play a 1-4-5 chord
progression using different chords but it will always be a 1-4-5, and
all 1-4-5's will always be related. On the other side of the paradox
you have music's wonderful subjectivity. The same song can sound
totally different and evoke different emotions between two different
people, and very often both people experience something different than
     what the author intended.

That being said, IMHO I definitely hear similarities between many of
the bands known as "grunge" or "alternative" or whatever you want to
call it. It may not be a mathematical similarity, but I do get common
feeling from all these groups. I definitely hear similarity between
AIC and Nirvana, because both of them have written stuff that sounds
like Pink Floyd. And I also hear and feel similarities between PJ and
SG. These are my perceptions. But, if the only thing all these bands
share is their hometown, then how come they have collaborated on so
many side projects together? I.E. Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, CC
appearing on AIC's SAP E.P. I don't believe that all these different
musicians could have collaborated so successfully without some musical
synergy. Not to mention that many of them by their own words, trace
their origins to the two original Seattle "grunge" bands--Green River
and Malfunkshon. But the beauty of music is that it can mean different
things to different people. I don't think any one opinion is THE
     correct one, including my own.

     Sorry if that was long-winded,

     Paul

1) I went to order the Hater CD and the wench at Waxie Maxies took my
order... she just called a week later to tell me that it's out of print
and they can't order it. Is this true? If so, where can I get one?
2) YES, JEN, I LOVE THE BASS!!!!!!!! Ben Shepherd rules.
I would go as far as to say that the man has completely influenced the
direction of soundgarden. DOTU screams Ben Shepherd. He is a completely
inovational bassist! Never has there been a bass player who can play the
rockin' groove in alternate tunings like Ben!! BEN, YOU KICK ASS!
Check out the bitchin' tone he gets too, gotta love those Mesa's!
Well, that's all for me, the lone Shepherd fan.

I have two questions for anyone who may be able to help:
1- Why does SG play "Searching with My Good Eye Closed" in D when
they play it live? The song on BMF is in B (tuned, accordingly,
BADGBE [with a low B]). I think I remember Chris saying somewhere
that it was so they didn't have to fuck around with that tuning live,
but "Rusty Cage" is in that tuning, and they play it in the original
key live.
2-What guitars and amps does Ben use with HATER?

i agree...i used to listen to that station too...that station was the
station that introduced me to SG...i was a new fan then i and i haven't
heard of a lot of SG's songs except those in SU...that station also made me
seek out BMF (after figuring out for weeks the title of outshined and rusty
cage and the name of the album)...i even have the stations bumpersticker
(which i never had the chance to show proudly)...but now since they switched
to crappy classic (old) rock, i find it hard to find good stations that can
bring good heavy rock to my waiting ears...92.3 krock is not as good as q104.3
was...and many stations today mix good songs with a lot of the rotten so called
alternative (or is it pop) crap...

i also miss the old folks from q104.3 like Damnit Janet.

on a last note,
why is it that much of the music out today are soft and "pop-py" compared to
the heavy music that engulfed the airwaves two or three years ago?

Oh, it definitely is. The strange thing when listening to it is
realizing how different "Nothing To Say" is when compared to
everything else on the disc. Most of the other songs are so poppy and
upbeat.

Of course, the Pigeonhed track is also different than everything else,
just because they're...well...different than everyone else. Weird
stuff. I love it. (I'm not sure if Kim contributes anything to the
track, though).

And there is a "hidden" track 23 on the disc: there's about 1:19 of
silence and then about 20 seconds of the Grunge Lite version of
"Smells Like Teen Spirit." At least someone at Sub Pop had enough of a
sense of humor to include it (and if you buy the disc and look at the

I'll scan the cover (and the photo of Kim in the liner notes) tonight
and add it to the Web page ASAP.

the whole MOVIE is tongue-in-cheek, very seattle/PNW sense of humor. it
really reflects this sense of 'what the hell are they talking about?' that
still has people puzzled to this day.

in the liner notes, there's a shot of Megan Jasper -- her scene in the
movie is one of the funniest, where she relates about how the NYTimes
called her one day, looking for examples of 'grunge slang'. she stopped
for a second, and instead of trying to explain that there was no such
thing, instead told them, 'well, you tell me a word and i'll tell you the
'grunge' word for it.' and they PRINTED IT! ;-)

absolutely go see this movie when it plays near you, and be sure to wait
until the VERY END of the credits to leave. it's worth it. ;-) i saw the
movie twice and would gladly go see it again even if soundgarden wasn't
in it.

for those coming for the hater-fest on halloween (oh seth? checked those
plane fares yet? ;->), there's a dead moon track on 'hype!' as well, one
of their better songs.

(and i will mention my favorite version of 'not for you' by pearl jam,
taken from the SPR broadcast). i also love the fastbacks, mudhoney and
young fresh fellows tracks....)

going to listen to it now ;-)

I was reminded of how LA used to have good hard rock radio stations a
couple of years ago.

I was watching a TV show last night, and for a short time, they played
AIC's What The Hell Have I! Anybody remember that song? You don't hear
songs like that on the radio anymore(at least I don't). You don't even see
those videos on eMTyV anymore.
Remember Prong's "Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck"? or Henry Rollins'
red-painted body in "Liar"? What about the scary, cool Tool videos? Even
Danzig, with "Her Black Wings". I could've sworn that he had very long
sideburns in the video. Here, in LA, Riki Rachtman has a radio show, and
recently dubbed Glenn Danzig as "The Satanic Fonzie". Very Funny.

More videos and songs are popping into my head! Remember...

Helmet---Milquetoast
Anthrax--Black Lodge
Slayer---Seasons In The Abyss
Corrosion Of Conformity--Clean My Wounds
Suicidal Tendencies--Institutionalized
I Mother Earth--Rain Will Fall
Flotsam and Jetsam--Waiting Through the Darkness
Pantera--Hollow
Megadeth--Sweating Bullets
Butthole Surfers---Who Was In My Room Last Night?

Even the old SG stuff that used to get airplay! If anybody wants to
discuss the fates or whatever of these bands...go ahead!

I really miss those days when radio and video outlets played lots of hard songs.

Subject: RE: radio station

Y'know, I heard some theory once that "popular" music is tied to the economy
and people's overall feelings about the standard of living they have.
Supposedly, when the economy is bad because of a recession or something,
songs that are more "heavy" (i.e. metal, gangsta rap, "grunge") get really
popular. But when people have a brighter outlook, they tend to listen to
more "light-hearted" music (No Doubt, Green Day - - hmmm light-hearted punk,
if you can call Green Day punk anyway). A few years ago we did have a
downturn in the economy and then that "war thing" in Iraq etc. But recently
the stock market's been booming, minimum wage was raised, yadda yadda. But,
that's it- - just a theory.

Which may be a good explanation of why DOTU has a less heavy feel, in the
ears of some list members, (myself included). Maybe Chris, Kim, Matt, and
Ben feel more positive, if not about the overall future of the country/
world, maybe at least about their own personal situations. Things have been
pretty good for them, it would seem, not that I know them personally or
anything, but that's my little opinion. Feel free to rip it shreds if you
want.

on a last note,
why is it that much of the music out today are soft and "pop-py" compared to

the heavy music that engulfed the airwaves two or three years ago?

In the next few weeks, keep an eye on Seth's website
(www.sgi.net/soundgarden). You can already go there to see a one-minute
clip of Hands All Over. There will be more to come. Eventually he will
have at least a clip of all of Soundgarden's videos. Ciao,

I never saw Kim actually eating the ice cream cone, sickos. And that is
not the weirdest dream I've ever had. For instance, last night the
Smashing Pumpkins were at my house which was right in the middle of MTV
Studios and I wanted to get a picture of me with Billy, D'Arcy and James
(the new drummer wasn't around) but I couldn't because I couldn't get my
hair down? Very weird. And then Billy was walking along the street
adjacent to mine singing Muzzle really loud, and then the police
arrested him and I went down to the station to bail him out. It was very
weird. And Billy was wearing this huge short-sleeve plaid shirt and
black shorts, not Zero. So the Kim dream wasn't exactly all that
unusual.

A shitload of my friends and I are going to the Palace
show.(assuming we get tickets) We definitley will be ready to
party. I've seen SG before and they do NOT disappoint. I'm so psyched
to see them again, because Lollapalooza passed up Michigan this year.
I would definitely rather see them headlining their own tour than
playing second fiddle to Metallica, though. For the most part, it
should be pure Soundgarden fans at this show, which is a definite
plus.(Although a few of my friends are just going to check them out)
If anyone else is planning on going to the Palace show, drop me a
line. Maybe we can all meet up and you all can find out what pieces
of shit me and my friends really are!

This isn't an intended 'slag-off' or 'flame' or whatever you call it,
but I've been noticing people saying things like, "Oh I don't like
Black Hole Sun anymore because it get's overplayed", and "I really
like Burden In My Hand now, it's going to be bad when the radio
starts playing it a lot because I'll end up getting sick of it", and
more recently "Blow Up The Outside World is getting so overplayed".
What the hell is the matter with ya! Don't listen to shit radio
stations or don't listen to the radio full stop. If I listened to the
radio all the time with the bullshit radio stations we have I'd go
insane, so I listen to CD's or tapes and listen to what I want
whenever the hell I feel like it.
