well, if you have the JCP video, you could try to recreate on of
those intense series of crosses that flash on the screen. you could
paint a huge cross with that girl on it too. or you could make some
really really depressing scene from FOBD. or, hey- what about Kyle
Petty? :) j/k. I dunno, i think i'd be going nuts now too. I'm really
really into Tighter & Tighter's lyrics, so you could try to pick
something out of them and make it yr "interpretation" of what chris's

Has anyone noticed overplayage of Blow up the Outside World recently?
The two crappy ass alternative stations never played it up until the
last 2 weeks, and now it's on all the time. It's kind of sad, because
I automatically put two strikes against anything played on Newrock
102.1, and they have been dishonoring SG by trying to play them, makes
me sick...

If it's alternative it's crap.

Subject: SG dreams

Well, seeing as quite a lot of you have SG dreams, I thought
I'd share two of mine.

In the first one I'm a German shepherd dog and I'm on stage
with the band. Matt gives me a bone and Ben pats my
head a couple of times. Then the band starts playing
"My Wave"; and the funny thing is, that instead of seeing a huge
crowd of fans, all you could see in front of the stage are waves
of water, and the sky is red. Then Kim and Chris take out some
fishing equipment and start fishing.......hmm.....very strange.

The other one is more bizarre: SG is in my bathroom practicing
Ben and Matt are standing, Chris is sitting on the toilet seat, and
Kim is sitting in the bathtub. (they're all dressed btw)
I ask them why they're here, and Chris says that the
acoustics are so much better in my bathroom. The strange thing was,
that none of the band members had arms, but they still managed
to play. After that they gave me some demo tapes and autographs
and drove away (still without arms) in a yellow porsche.

I'm not sure if there's any meaning behind any of this; just thought
I'd share it with you :)

Mostly I agree with everything you said about grunge. But I must
disagree with you that it never was a music form. It WAS guitars tuned
down, but it was also a setting on the amp/guitar that gave the music a very
muddy, thick, bassy sound. It WAS NOT flannel shirts. It WAS NOT Pearl
Jam. It WAS NOT just Seattle bands. Once it became a fashion statement,
and a term for everything Seattle, it lost its meaning. But to say grunge
as a music form never existed because of what the media did to it is like
saying punk never existed for the same reasons (Old school punk, that
is...). Also, a band doesn't have to be a grunge band, but they can play
grunge songs. I definately wouldn't classify Soundgarden as a grunge band,
but I would argue that songs like "Gun" and "4th of July" are pretty close
to the original meaning of the style. But, I agree, if I hear Pearl Jam
classified as grunge one more time I think I might start wringing throats...

Being an artist myself, I can understand you dilema. I have a few
suggestions of my own which may help you (in the form of SG songs, of
course):-

1.	4th of July
2.	Boot Camp
3.	Applebite
4.	Searching With My Good Eye Closed
5.	Limo Wreck

There are jsut some ideas. I have had songs which have inspired me to do
pieces before. It's good when that happens.

While I believe that some dreams have relevance or menaing, I'm not one
of these people that has to attribute some sort of hidden or deeper
menaing to eveything my subconscious mind throws up during my
sleeping hours. Most of it you can't even remember anyway, and a lot
of dreams are so silly or surreal, it seems pointless thrying to figure out
what they mean. But there are people out there who have to devise a
theory for every dream, every song lyric and every artist's piece of
work - even though one can never hope to know how another
individual perceives reality and therefore not know how their mind
works. I'm not trying to get at you or anything, Geoff, so don't take the
wrong idea about this, I'm just skeptical about stuff like this. That's all...

From: clindz@wavenet.com (chris)
Subject: In defense of "grunge"

I'm not usually one to defend the use of meaningless labels - my armchair
crusade against the FDA notwithstanding :) - but try this on for size:

"Hairy Eyeball's" argument about the lack of musical similarity between the
bands typically called "grunge" was real passionate and made good sense.

I've always thought of the term "grunge" as being used to describe an
attitude as opposed to a particular musical style. The "grunge" attitude
is the whole "I'm wearing what I want, personal hygiene isn't real high on
my list, fuck it all, my art is what's important to me, I'll do whom and
what I want and when I want and the opinion of the rest of the world ain't
all that important" kind of thing. What's valued is the quality of the
music (and quality referring to emotional content and expression rather
than technically perfect playing or stunning production values). And what
isn't valued is the show biz that goes along with it.

That's why PJ stopped doing videos and Chris cut his hair, etc, etc...
because they were afraid that the music was being forgotten or
overshadowed. Granted I don't live inside their heads so I don't know if
the motives were that pure but in my heart of hearts I hope that's the
case.

Definitely all the "grunge" bands possess - or at least are sold as
possessing - the above-mentioned attitude. Alice, Soundgarden, Nirvana,
PJ, Tad, Mudhoney, even Stone Temple Pilots to an extent. That they all
(except STP) come from Seattle is incidental.

In fact, the press started referring to Neil Young as "the godfather of
grunge" not long ago. Not because his music necessarily sounds like any of
the "grunge" bands (forget Mirror Ball for a minute), but because he's had
the fuck it all, anti-corporate attitude forever. He's never (publicly)
given a damn what the critics have to say, he's never gone out of his way
to look pretty for the press, he doesn't often give interviews and when he
does he keeps his music the topic.

So to me, to say a band is "grunge" means they don't go for all the
bullshit. Which is not such a bad thing at all.

Sure the term got misapplied and overapplied (though not as badly as the
word "punk" or for that matter "alternative") and, like any term that
groups people together, became reductive and meaningless, so thank god it's
going away. But what it originally meant was actually a good and noble
thing.

My $.02

peace,
chris

been laying on my back in the middle of the floor, and then the next thing I
knew I was up on my knees looking frantically around the room. My heart was
beating like crazy, and I was like "What the FUCK is going on?!?!?" After a
few seconds of freaking out and wondering why I was suddenly so tense and
alert... I heard the music, and I knew that IT was what had affected me so
strongly. Weeeeeird, huh? Heheheh... that's how deep SG's music is imbedded
in me. My subconscious recognizes it, even when I'm not paying any
attention. Ain't life grand? =)

I strongly agree with you. I'd like to know where you are from, because
sometimes regions have to do with the overplaying of songs on commercial
radio. I don't know if you ever heard of KROQ 106.7, but they are an
alternative station. They used to be REALLY alternative in the heyday of
Guns N' Roses and Metallica. Nothing is alternative anymore, so why do
radio stations say that they are?

KROQ has been playing BUTOW constantly. Before DOTU, they would constantly
play singles from Superunknown. They hardly play anything before
that--like Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage, Loud Love, or any other hardcore
SG favorites. There used to be a radio station in southern california that
kicked ass because they played true rock, but with the popular demand for
"alternative", the station went out of business, to the dismay of many
people. Commercial alternative radio REALLY SUCKS.

There's still hope in a lot of college radio stations, though.

Actually my perception comes from Chris' lyrics, particularly those on
BMF. Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves & Bulldozers, Drawing Flies, and Holy
Water all seem to have elements of creativity being stifled, and the
frustrations of "celebrity" and living in a tight-assed society.

I agree with all you said about SG and the business aspects of their
career. They are uncompromising and true to themselves always. What I
meant was that I think there is more there, lyrically especially, that
has perhaps been held back somewhat, through their own choice of course.
A while back we had a thread about the lyrics in Drawing Flies. I think
this song is a classic example of feeling like you want to write
something, but holding yourself back, knowing what the general reaction
would be. I don't know if this makes sense to you, but its a choice
anyone who puts their work into the public arena has to worry about and
make choices about. I never said SG compromised themselves in any way.
What I was saying was that they, like any other artists, have had to
weigh the decisions of what they record by what will be most, um,
appropriate, accepted, whatever. You can't honestly believe that they
just throw any old songs together just because they happen to like them.

In no way did I mean my post as a slam at SG. Actually it was a slam at
the "business" and at our essentially prudish society that tends to
cater to right wing whims. I think almost EVERY artist is held back
somewhat by these things. And the ones who aren't, don't make it. Think
about it.

Ha ha! You are right, age has little to do with appreciating the
differences between these (or other) bands. I'm 22 now, and four
years ago, AIC, SG and Nirvana all sounded like 'random noise' to
me. It took me about two years of listening to these bands before I
considered myself able to pick out what I now think are obvious
differences. It wasn't my age, it was the types of music that I
listened to before that had conditioned me that way.

Thanks very much, Seth. I was just about to ask the other SOMMS members
about the origin of "Heretic". I recorded the song on commercial
radio(ZOINKS!) about a year and a half ago, and I had no idea where that
song came from. I didn't even know the name of the song until I checked
your list of lyrics, for the words of "Heretic" are hard to decipher. I
LOVE the way the song changes tempo when the chorus comes, and I LOVE it
when Chris screams, "HERETIIIC!" The mellow darkness of Kim's guitar
really rules. Today I read your random link, "foreshocks" and now I know
that I can find a better CD recorded version on DeepSix or Foreshocks(if I
can find it.) Thanx.

<<who was talking about cc at the capitol theatre in downtown olympia????????>>

Hi Michael,

That was me telling a story of the time a friend of mine 'met' Chris.
I previously thought it was in 88 or 89, but now I'm thinking it was in 91.

Last night I read an article in a local paper called 'this.' It had a
review of the Fishbone show in Olympia. Here's what they had to say, in short:

"They shook the stage and it wasn't until this moment that the
magnitude of the show set in. It was and will be the most out of
control show Olympia has hosted for along while. It's right up there
with Soundgarden playing the Capital Theatre in 91, part of the
K-Records International Pop Underground Festival."

I'm thinking this must have been the same night my friend exchanged his
beer for a ticket with Chris.

So Michael, are you in Lacey or nearby? I work in downtown Olympia and
live past the airport (for now). Do you go to St. Martin's or work
there? E-mail me! We've got a bunch of people meeting later this
month to see Hater and meet Shroom, Dena and Christy.

Also, the Tool tickets go on sale this Saturday at 11 a.m.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the same bunch of people (and more)

and Dena will be on October 25 at the OK (sheesh, I woulda thought
*everyone* would know this by now ;-))). Hope everyone is 21 by then!!!

And Vikki is back in Seattle. I imagine her silence is due to the
beginning of fall quarter at the UW. I spoke with last week sometime.
She was gonna post to the list, but it must be a *super* busy time
right now. Hope you have a chance soon, Vikki, I'm anxious to hear

fortunately is rarely.)

Anyway, thanks for the warnings that yet another of my favorite songs is
about to be played into the ground. I wonder how the guys in SG feel about
their songs being overplayed? I'm sure it's good for them in the sense that
it helps sell records to "trendies" (ok ok I won't start on that again), but
does anybody else on the list feel like it really kind of "cheapens" the
music or makes it less affective (I can't find the right words) when it gets
played every hour on the hour?

Lastly, Halloween's around the corner. Anyone have plans to dress up like
their favorite SG member?

ok I'll shut up now. Monnica :-)

<< I'd like to go to both, but I don't know if that'll be possile.>>

If you're talking about not being able to get a ticket for both shows,
that's one of my little 'fears' also. I know of a pretty good TM
location, meaning not many people know about it or use it. I'm
thinking I won't have a problem there, but you never know. Also, the
fan club sent a notice saying if you were a member and a show sold out
in your area, there would be a way to get tickets. Now, that would be
great, but with the swiftness (read: total sarcasm) in which they
operate, I'm not sure I'd put much faith in that. Hopefully, they will
surprise us.

I know other people were wondering how long it took to get their
welcome packet. I sent my check in on June 25. They finally posted
the check on July 17. During that time I sent them 6 messages asking
about confirmation of my check and getting subscribed to their email
list. Nothing. It took the man himself, Seth, to get any positive
response out of them (he's my hero!). And finally my welcome packet
came. I don't know what day it was, but the envelope was postmarked
August 6. Keep the faith, I guess...

And since I asked the other guys, where are you at Ryland?

We should let our (our gen's) music be defined by "an old guy". I think
grunge was just a convenient category to stick bands in who came from
Seattle and bands who have tried to imitate them since.
