This is my first post. I couldn't help myself. I've been a fan since
Louder than Love.

Superunknown is a masterpiece. Their best. Down on the Upside, might
surpass it upon further listening. These two albums are mature and plush
where BMF is exactly what those initials stand for (that's a good thing).
BMF rocks harder, but doesn't continue to reveal new and interesting things
the way their two most recent albums do.

If I'm still listening to Soundgarden in 20 years, I'll be reaching for
either of their last two albums, I think.

I heard "Karaoke" for the first time when I bought the single last week

Actually I wouldn't take these results too seriously because it was a
pretty small sample considering the size of the list, and then the size
of the SG following outside the list (although I do think they would
probably translate pretty closely to a larger sample). Really, who cares
what other people like (I think the thing I've actually listened to the
most, all told, is the Flower EP). If it gives you pleasure to listen to
it, that's all that matters.

Hey there,

I saw Hype a couple of weeks ago here in Boston, and it was a
pretty cool movie. There was a lot of soundgarden stuff in the movie.
It's basically about the whole history of the Seattle scene. there's a
lot of live footage from a ton of bands from that area from SG to Dead
moon and Coffin Break. There's is one part where they cut to Sg playing
in an arena somewhere and they go into searching with My Good eye
closed. It was prety cool. so if you are into the whole Seattle scene,
then you should definatley check this movie out. There's even
interviews with Susan Silver. Later

Well, I'd just like to give my support for SU. I was iniated to SG by a
friend after the release of SU. I hadn't even heard of them! That album
grew to be my favourite of all time, there are just so many kick ass songs
on it. I have listened to BM, and I know I'll take slack for this, but I
think it is a pale comparison to SU...to me it sounds like a completely
different group. Black Hole Sun remains my 2nd fav song of all time...I
know it was overplayed but it was my favourite song before all the hype.
That song alone makes it the best album of all time. :)

John.

that's true, kathie. when I said that badmotorfinger was the
band's pinnacle (at least in terms of recording), it was totally personal
opinion. probably no hint of fact at all :)

> reality. Personally I don't think SG has been allowed to reach that
> pinnacle, whether through their own fault or that of others. They are
> certainly not "media darlings" and I think in many ways they have been

> If they continue to become more and more independent I think we'll see

while I think bmf is certainly their best album to date, I also
think that the band has better and more exciting work still to come. but
as for the band not being independent enough, I have to disagree. to me,
the creative control held by all the members of soundgarden has never been
in doubt. from the moment soundgarden was formed, the four band members
have held almost total control over just about every facet of their work
and evolution, as both musicians and as a band. this is a band who, while
being courted by almost every major label in the business, decided *not*
to jump straight from sub pop into the major's, but held off and signed
with sst, a relatively smaller label but one which the band felt could
serve their audience better.

I'm not sure that being "media darlings" would have ever helped or
hindered the band's independence or success at all, especially a band like
soundgarden who are fairly indifferent to either mainstream success or
media recognition. this is a band who, much to the distaste of both label
management and a certain former bass player (ever notice that on the
flower ep, the only one who isn't looking at the sun is hiro?) included
big dumb sex on their first release under a&m; toured on the much maligned
lollaplooza 96 with metallica, took part in molsongate (to many lister's
chagrin), recorded songs like 665, 667 and one minute of silence all on
the same record, have made both cop killer and big bottom staples of past
shows, decide completely what artwork and even *ad copy* is produced,
participated in very different side-projects (hater, totd, pigeonhed,
etc), and while it took two ep's and four albums for the band to take full
production responsibilities for themselves, you have to remember that they
have had production credits for every record since ultramega ok, and have
always chosen their producer themselves with little outside or management
input.

overall, I think soundgarden have had time to adjust to the
limelight they are now receiving because they took the long road to
success, and weren't in a rush to sell a million records or get on the
front of entertainment weekly. the band have stayed true to themselves,
retained real control over all artistic elements of their work and have
not compromised for anyone. where in that did you perceive that the band
has been held back creatively or otherwise kathie?

People keep mentioning dreams about Soundgarden, and it's not that
surprising, according to Freud. I'm taking a course on Freud, and I had
to read "The Interpretation of Dreams". Anyway, Freud's main idea about
dreams, is that, without exception, all dreams are fulfillments of
conscious or unconscious wishes. So, whether you know it or not, you
wanted to meet him. You _don't_even_want_to _know_ what Freud would say
about the ice cream cone. (although Shroom and some of the female

cones, though) hehehe
