Subject: Articles
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

First, I was just HTMLizing 5 new articles for the Web page, and came
across this quote: "The sun is out, the sky is blue, and Chris Cornell
is smiling like a Cheshire Cat who has just discovered it can lick its
own testicles." How can you not want to read the articles after
reading that?

Second, those of you who read SPIN magazine probably noticed that in
this month's Point Blank (letters), there are 4 responses to the
Soundgarden cover story SPIN ran a couple of months ago. For those of
you who don't read SPIN, here are the responses:

- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

When I first got a load of Soundgarden in 1989, I thought I was a
really cool guy. Then the rest of the world found out about my grungy
little secret, and, like many other pretentious bastards, I quickly
dropped them from my favorite-band list. But after reading Mike
Rubin's interview ["The Real Thing," July], I remembered why I liked
those guys so much. Thanks for a great article and for ending my
regressions.

	- Mark Cline via Internet

Mike Rubin's Soundgarden article was indeed a genuinely accurate
reflection of the band: It was just as slow and boring as their most
recent album. Surviving a dry history of Seattle only to learn the
names of Chris Cornell's dogs, I felt the same urge to take a big fat
nap as I did when listening to Down On The Upside.

	- Sarah Habibi via Internet

I sure wish Soundgarden would stop lying to convey whatever image they
want at the moment. Chris Cornell used to swear up and down that he
was straight, but now that Soundgarden is on the road with Metallica
(once nicknamed Alcoholica), he's saying he's an alkie, too. And in
how many interviews did they formerly claim, "We're not a metal band!"
while their current album is nothing but metal? If they ever decide to
go rap, they'll probably brag about being arrested for drive-by
shootings and rape!

	- Lynne Falcone, Brooklyn, New York

Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil may have gray hairs, but so do I, and I'm
only 22. Soundgarden, like a fine wine, only get better with age.

	- April D. Peters, Butler, Kentucky

- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

There you have it, folks. My only comment is in reference to
Soundgarden's current album being "nothing but metal": that's a strong
statement, and songs like "Applebite" certainly disprove it. On the
other hand, the guitar solo in "Rhinosaur" is about the most
buttrockish, straight-ahead metal thing I've ever heard SG do. Not to
go off on a tangent here, but there's far, far too much straight-ahead
rocking out on DOTU anyway. This fast, punky side to Soundgarden is
not the one I like, and the new slower-tempo songs are far too thin; I
much prefer the sounds of Ultramega OK and Badmotorfinger (and much of
Louder Than Love). It just makes it worse that the b-sides from the
DOTU singles have also been fast rockers rather than slow
mind-blowers. Yeah, maybe I'm living in the past, and the band has
"matured" (whatever that means), and the band is finally doing what
they want to do, but if that's the case, then ship me back to 1991
when they were immature.

I mean, can you put on "Slaves & Bulldozers" or "Room A Thousand Years
Wide" or "Beyond The Wheel" or "Flower" or "Toy Box" or "Gun" or "4th
of July" or "Holy Water" or "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" or
"Like Suicide" and then put on "No Attention" or "Never Named" or
"Dusty" or "An Unkind" or "Rhinosaur" or "Pretty Noose" and not want
to cry?

Tangentially yours,
seth

Don't like Circle of Power. To much screaming with no control. It always
sounded like a space needed filled on the CD and they did it for a lark.

Just me again w/ a few cents to add again. I want to thank Taylor for his
excellent comments about what used to be indie is now mainstream! That was
amazing, man, b/c a year ago I was going thru that same phase of trying to
define stuff! What amazes me is that he got that our of Bortnik's flame to
the list. I was stunned....and yet I do see where he's coming from as well.
And like Taylor said, it would be plain childish to retaliate. I think this
list is above all that negative stuff.

Slightly non-Sg related.....ATTENTION TO ANY PJ FANS ON THIS LIST:

A friend and I have decided to get rid of alot of our PJ stuff, just selling
it for what we paid for it. Posted an ad in a PJ zine and got 2 buyers, so
we're stuck w/ alot of stuff. Before I run an ad in Goldmine I thought I'd
offer it to my Sg list family to see if there are any interested parties.
Just email me privately for the addie. I hate to put this stuff in the
garbage b/c someone out there might want the stuff!

Back to Sg--this thought just crossed my mind--call it a mini-survey or
something, but out of curiousity, how many members of the list have ever met
Sg? Is anyone interested in hearing any past tales? The new ones made me
curious!

all fer now...ciao...deb

Greetings and Salutations,
Does anyone know for sure how to tell which SU singles go into the
collectors box? So far I've got 8 or 9, but the little black box only fits
6. Also, if any of you have made any mix tapes with just SG songs (for your
car or whatever) that you are particularly happy with, E-mail me privately
with a song list...please...thank you. I am having trouble deciding.
Finally, I say enough quibbling about who's more alternative than
who. I got enough of that in high school to last a decade. Mr. Bortnick
has gotten more attention than he deserves. Besides, even though I've only
been on this list for a month or so, everything I've read so far has been
important or at least mildly interesting, so what else matters? Whether you
dig Green River, Green Day, or even Green Jelly (god save us) we are all
*one nation under Soundgarden*, and that is that. (How's that for a quote, huh?)

Enough for now

I agree. Why let such an idiot get you so upset. I didn't even finish
reading his original post - I didn't like what I did read, so I just

As SG are one of my favourite bands, I never thought there would ever be
a Soundgarden song I did not like, but "Half" from Superunknown has to be
(IMHO) the worst song they have ever ewritten. I do not know how anybody
could possibly like it. It sounds like Indian resturant background

     Greetings,

Went to the local music store today and was thumbing through a copy of
the DOTU guitar and voice sheet music booklet. The first couple of
pages were pictures of the guys in the studio; and judging by the
length of Chris's hair, I'd say that the pics were from the DOTU
     sessions, but I digress.

Anyway, in these pics, Ben is playing a Hoffner Bass. The very same,
violin-shaped, bass guitar played by Paul McCartney. Being a major
Beatles fan from wwwway back, I was very pleasantly surprised. I've
been a SG fan for years, and now I have an added reason to like them.
Does anybody know if Ben or any of the other lads has ever expressed
any appreciation for, or inspiration by, the Fab Four? Maybe he just
likes the sound of it, or maybe it's more than that. Also, can it be
assumed that much of the bass work on DOTU is done on that Hoffner
     bass?

Well, I wouldn't say that I hate some songs but I do get tired of the songs
that get a lot of airplay, ie Black Hole Sun, Burden in My Hand etc. MTV
plays the hell out of stuff and the local "new rock alternative" station
X103 certainly plays stuff too much. In a way, I'm glad that Soundgarden is
not one of X103's "favored children" like say the Smashing Pumpkins or
Alannis because I'm sure I would hate them by now. (Either that or change
to a country station). You can get too much of a good thing.

Hm. I really like "half". It's one of my favorite sg songs. I also really
like KP, SLS and Show Me. I sometimes skip "room a thousand years wide"
but it's grown on me. I also occasionaly skip "reach down" on ToTD, but
it has also become more interesting, esp. that orgasmic guitar solo.
I never skip it, but "tighter and tighter" would be down there on my list.
I guess I'm not a big fan of the slow, long songs. I suppose it's
evidence of my mtv, fast-clip, no-attention-span mind. Then again, I can
listen to "il trovatore" straight through without moving.

hey all...

in regards to the discussion about thayil using an e-bow on black hole

i'm assuming the intro is the part in question...it's my understanding
that kim played through a leslie cabinet (a cool 60s-type cabinet
effect with a big whirling propeller-thing) for all of the "clean"
parts in the song...and it sounds as if he's doing some funky stuff
with the leslie on the intro. i don't know. i guess it could be an
e-bow, but i can't see kim using one of those things.

has anyone ever used an e-bow before? my friend brought one over a few
months ago while i was jamming in our basement and let me try it out.
it's kind of a cool effect, but it's like using a phaser or a massive
delay or anything like that...it gets old and it has very limited
uses. plus i felt like some techno-geek U2-type guitar nerd while I
was using it. I wanked around with it a little then shrugged my
shoulders, tossed it aside, yelled at my drummer with a four-count and
busted into "beat on the brat" by the ramones. (i knew joey and tommy
wouldn't approve of any modern technology whatsoever in a ramones
cover tune...of course, they also wouldn't approve of anything in
excess of three chords, but that's another issue... :) )

and so ended my e-bow experience... :)

later...

BTW, I had to take the train to Milwaukee over the weekend, and finally got
to use my personal CD player. I brought BMF, SU, and DOTU, and the worst
sound quality has to go to Superunknown. I wish to GOD it was produced
clearer; it was almost painful to hear "mailman" with all the static on CC's
voice, when he screams "riding....all the way", just was frustrating. But
the music makes the trip go so fast...

Subject: Article comments... =)

Just read through a few of the new articles on the page. Damn... I know
that alot of people don't like Kerrang, but I personally think they write
some of the BEST and most entertaining articles out there. If I were
talented enough to write for a living... I'd want to do stuff like Kerrang
puts out.

> Q: Last time you danced in a club?

>CC: That would be on the Australian 'Big Day Out' tour. We went to a
>bar and the highly effeminate Urge Overkill were being very critical of
>the fact that we were too macho to dance. But then as soon as we got
>up and started dancing, they started making fun of us. I think they had
>that in mind all along.

Heheheh... can you picture Chris and Kim out on the dance floor? That
reminds me of that MTV interview with them where they were showing Tabitha
Sorren around Seattle. Standing out front of one of the clubs, Chris was
talking about it, and Matt, Kim and Ben were acting out a club scene behind
him. Matt was getting down (disco dancing), and Ben was lighting Kim's
cigarette. Kim..."What's YOUR sign?" Heheheh... the closest I've seen Chris
come to dancing was on a tape of SG from '87, methinks? They did Fopp, and
Chris pulls his shirt off and is kinda bouncing around/dancing across the
stage. Funneeeee!!! AAAUUGGGHH!! I love it! He looks SO silly, it's
great!!

>Last time you wanted something you couldn't have?

>CC: I didn't want to wake up this morning, but I had to. Otherwise,
>being a rich and successful rock star, I can have anything I want.
>World peace? I can have that, but I have to be a politician first and

God, I love him. He might be getting spoiled (or should I say MORE
spoiled)... but at least he's usually honest, and he's not as hypocritcal as
alot of people. Heheheh... I say this after I flamed him a couple months ago
for being a hypocrite. Go me...

>Last time you did something embarrassing onstage?

>CC: It's usually something I say. You say something that you think
>people will remember or think is cool, and they just look at you like,
>'Idiot, just play a song!'.

Heheheh... or from the hootchie brigade..."Idiot, just take off your
shirt!" ;) I've never really heard Chris say anything stupid onstage... has
anyone else? It kinda surprises me to hear him admit to trying to say
something that he thinks people will remember or think cool, though.

>How long can you last?

>CC: Two litres or 15 minutes.

I could comment on this... but I think you people already know basically
what I'd say. Heheheh... ;)

>The sun is out, the sky is blue, and Chris Cornell is smiling like a
>Cheshire Cat who has just discovered it can lick its own testicles.

You're right, Seth... this is a good one. Heheheh... see what I mean
about Kerrang?!? God, I love that magazine...

Chris wanted to be a pro football player?!?!? I didn't know that!!
AAAUUGGHHH!!!! God, I'm glad he didn't! I can't imagine what my world
would be like without SG's music. Yeah, that sounds kinda pathetic... but I
really don't care. SG is a huge part of my life, and it gives me the willies
to think of life without them. I love them to death. Heheheh... now if THAT
isn't a psycho comment...

>He figured that some day a big band would roll into Seattle, take one

>because they found me a little too attractive."

Ha! Can you really BLAME them?!? "Sweaty young rock guy..." Chris,
you are such a poet! ;) I love it when people describe Chris. The
following is my all time FAVORITE description of Chris (it came from Seconds

>Frontman Chris Cornell is the musical icon/sex symbol that defines
>post-Alternative Pop Culture - supercool to male fans and dreamy to the
>women, especially back in the day when he was the longhaired, brooding,
>bare-chested boy toy with the Doc Martens and the droopy shorts.

I WOULD type up that article for the page, but even though I love the
way the writer described Chris... he spoke VERY derogatorily of Andy Wood. I
HATE it when people do that, and I e-mailed the shit out of the guy... but
SURPRISE!!! I got no response. Fucking idiot. Anyway...

>But his fame has engendered curious side-effects. Where once the

Heheheh... and the hootchies find it quite intriguing. I've never been

Subject: random stuff

Hey everyone. I just wanted to ramble about some stuff, so this post has
absolutely no order or thought. First of all, if you will recall, I
requested your opinions on SG in ag. Well, I went with BIMH. Just 'cause
it's fairly recent and it's not too loud, or at least I thought. My teacher
ended up letting me listen to the whole tape in class. I don't know what his
problem was. I had Seasons on this tape and when it came on he started
wincing as if in pain! And that is one of the quietest songs on the tape.
Oh, well. He's a loser anyway so why try to figure him out.

Next subject- SNL. I saw it AGAIN on Saturday. Has Chris cut his hair since
then? I never noticed it before, but with his hair that length and that
style, it made his head look way too big for his body. I know I'm stupid,
but that's the first thing I thought of when they switched to those side
shots.

Last subject (I think)- I got my OnSat (satellite mag. kinda like TV guide)
last week for the week of Sept 30-Oct 6. The movie "Singles" is supposed to
be on October 3 on Cinemax. It's the first time I have seen it listed for
cable and I've never seen the movie so I was happy.

OK, this is the last one- I am now known as the MUSIC FREAK of my class.
This is what I am refered to in all but one of my classes. I dunno about
this title. SG freak maybe, but "music" covers a lot of territory and I
don't know shit about country or rap. Oh, well. I wonder if there is an
award for this or something.

Goodbye now

Amber

P.S. Shroom- glad to hear your not dead. I was wondering.

Subject: Re:RAMBLINGS, COMPLIMENTS, AND CRITICISMS

This is my very first time here. I got a whole bunch of e-mail
from SOMMS that I found interesting to talk about
To those in Europe who saw Soundgarden, you excite me from each
word you type. You see, I'm way across the ocean in Southern California,
and I am desperately waiting for Soundgarden to announce tour dates for Los
Angeles and maybe some Orange County dates. In L.A., I don't think
Soundgarden is as popular as Smashing Pumpkins, but that would be a good
thing, wouldn't it? That means I would have a better chance of getting
tickets! To all of you on the eastern coast of the United States who can't
get tickets, I feel bad for you. Mucho sympathy.
Did anyone see the rerun of Saturday Night Live? Not only was
Soundgarden the guest musical perfomers, but Jim Carrey was also a special
guest. I'm not a HUGE Carrey fan, but his skits were hilarious!!
To Emily, if your reading this: I have some Soundgarden song
suggestions for you. I love it when Soundgarden ROCKS, but since you're
dealing with your predominately "country music" crowd, so maybe you should
play Chris's "Seasons". Try mellow songs from Superunknown,
Badmotorfinger, or Down On The Upside. I would give you more song titles,
but I'm not at home right now...sorry!
To Natalie: I can't believe you would even mention ALANIS
MORRISETTE in SOMMS. I don't mind you liking other bands, but I really
CAN'T understand what some people actually like Alanis.
Okay, Mr. Bortnik, Oasis, Bush, And STP do suck, but we people of
SOMMS do have the right to like other bands. Soundgarden is excellent, but
we can't talk about Soundgarden all the time. Every band that you listed I
know about, though. That's simply because I read all sorts of information
and live in a city where underground music, indie bands, and non-popular
bands are known(the city of Rodney on the Roq!) Get your stuff straight
before you diss us, man!
Even though I'm not a 2Pac fan, I don't think he should be wished
dead.(That's like me wishing Alanis Morisette dead.) Hey, everyone's
entitled to their comments of the death of 2Pac. Just expressing my
opinion!

 what do you think? :>

I've always considered Chris to have an almost "majestic" way of
carrying himself, which could be perceived as arrogance, but I don't
think it is. I think he has this great tall body that he has learned
to use well. In every interview I've seen with Chris he always seems
really humble to me. Sometimes shyness and/or being introverted is
seen by people as being arrogant. I know what you mean, though. Its
hard to be objective about someone you feel so strongly for (this is
coming from someone who once told shroom I couldn't vote to convict
Chris if I was on a jury and knew he was guilty). So I guess only
those of us who get lucky enough to actually meet him (how about it

Its me again. Sorry for so many posts, but I'm finally catching up on
my digests and I'm on a posting frenzy.

I finally had another Soundgarden dream last night. Unfortunately I
didn't jump up and write it down, so this won't be as detailed as some
of your dreams have been, but I thought it was cool anyway.

A bunch of us sommsters were staying in a hotel across the street from
a place Soundgarden was playing. It was kind of like a dorm situation
and we were all hanging out, looking forward to the concert. When I
walked into the venue it was set up where there were chairs all the
way up to the stage (no place to mosh, awww) and in the front row I
found Caryn. Now this is weird, because I've never met Caryn and don't
even know what she looks like, but in my dream it was Caryn (I also
met Ben Timberlake in the dream, who I've also never seen). Anyway,
when the show started we were right up there. Chris came to the edge
of the stage as he was singing and crouched down, gripping the edge of
the stage with one hand. I couldn't resist - he was just too close - I
reached out and touched his hand. And he seemed to get pissed! I have
conveniently blocked out the horrible details, but I think he said or
did something rude. I must have looked so devastated, though, that
during a break I was called over to the side of the stage and guess
who was there - Chris. He said he was sorry and asked if I was with
the mailing list (don't ask me, it was a dream) and I said yeah, so we
all got to go backstage after the show. I don't remember any more
details; I'm just glad to have had a Soundgarden dream again - its
been a long time.

why exactly do you hate all rap stars? have they done something to you
personally? did they all kick your dog or kill your mother? It's ok to not
like or even hate the music. You might not like the rap star as an
individual based on what you know of them but, to wish them dead simply
based on what they do for a living?! That's biggoted buddy.

I'll admit, I don't like what 2Pac stood for or what he had to say because
he did nothing but tear down black people and further the myth that we are
all gang bangers, or junkies or hos. (I'm black by the way.) I think his
music was destructive and did more to make things harder for people like
myself rather than "speak for me or represent my life". But I didn't sit
around saying "boy, I'm glad he's dead".

Actually, I believe I remember an instance when Chris or Kim or somebody in
SG gave a positive mention about a couple of rap acts. And I definitely
remember Chris saying he liked the work of En Vogue (eventhough they aren't
rap they certainly aren't rock). I sure hope SG is not as biggoted and
narrowminded and meanspirited as some of their fans seem to be.

PS I know there was'nt much SG content there but I just had to say
something. Please keep me on the list

Now, can we talk about something else? :-)

I pretty certain that it isn't kim playing the intro to black hole
sun. in "guitar world" of may 1994 there is an interview/guitar lesson
with kim, and he says that there was no way he was going to play the intro
because it (the guitar phrase through the leslie, I assume) sounded too
dinky, which would leave him with only the chorus guitar part. in the end
the intro must have been played by chris, which makes the bhs clip a bit
of a sham :)

The song Right Turn is on the Alice In Chains EP called SAP. It has
Layne Staley, Chris Cornell and Mark Arm(of mudhoney) singing on it. It
is an amazing song. I especially like the way Chris' vocal completely
blow away Layne's and Mark's and the end of the song. It's listed as
being performed by Alice Mudgarden. Hope that helps.

someone in soundgarden to die i would be very upset, so , being a fan of a
variety of music, i feel bad to be in the presence of someone who so easily
can write about wanting another person to die... not only is this stupid
and annoying, his posts contain no soundgarden content. i mean, i don't
always write the most interesting or totally soundgarden related things,
but i try not to write something w/out even mentioning them. we should
have some kind of screening system to pluck out the bad seeds before they
start to grow into the list. i think that if someone says something that
more than half the list finds offensive, then continues to make such
idiotic comments again and again, they should be dropped right away. i'm

This box is designed for the "UK Superunknown singles" which are:

Spoonman - Spoonman / Fresh Tendrils / Cold Bitch / Exit Stonehenge
The Day I Tried To Live - TDITTL / Like Suicide (acoustic) / Kickstand (live)
Black Hole Sun #1 - BHS / JCP (live) / My Wave (live) / Spoonman (remix)
Black Hole Sun #2 - BHS / BtW (live) / FOBD (live) / Birth Ritual (demo)
Fell On Black Days #1 - FOBD / Kyle Petty / FOBD (video)
Fell On Black Days #2 - FOBD / Girl U Want / FOBD (demo)

That's the scoop on that.

This brings me to a few questions as well:

Any news on the DOTU Japanese full-length cd with 'extra track' - total of 16
<!>? Yeah, so it's NORMALLY a 16 cut album... I'm just wondering (c:

Anyone seen the German cd single for Spoonman? I can order it but I'm afraid
it's the same as the UK...

Also has anyone ever SEEN the second disc for the BHS box set released in
Germany? Not the UK #2 I mentioned above but this one: Tracks are BHS / JCP
(live) / BtW (live) & it's A&M number 580-623-(2). Disc one I have; it comes
in a strange package which I've never seen done before. Tracks are BHS /
Like Suicide (acoustic) / Kickstand (live) <exactly like the commerically
unsuccessful TDITTL single>. The packaging would best be described as
digipak because the spine is held together simply by cardboard as each side
is designed to hold a disc. Disc one comes with a cut-out that is placed on
the eventual site of BHS (if it exists). My guess it that it's a pic disc
with a purple sun that is so often related to the BHS singles: ie: UK disc
#2: both the cd cover & cd itself / German #1: pic cd.

Anyway... if anyone knows the whereabouts of any of these records please call
their mother's because they're worried; oh, & tell me too (c:

The guys have been known to in the past play the occassional Beatles tune or
at least use lyrics. They recorded "Come Together" & it appears on several
Louder Than Love-era singles / eps. I have a boot of a 1990 show when
Cornell sings "Hey Jude" during some other song (I think). They recorded
Lennon's "One Minute Of Silence" (omitting Oko's minute) for Ultramega OK &
"Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkee" from The White
Album @ the 1989 Peel Session... so yeah, I guess they appreciate & are
inspired by the Beatles. Also I think that songs like "Head Down", B"low Up
The Outside World" & all the Bmf studio covers feel like Beatles songs...
just in how they were recorded... then again, many of those covers were done
by the British BBC which would be synonymous for Beatle sounding recordings.

But too be honest... I don't think Ben really likes Paul (c: I see a
character clash here. Then again if Hater covers "Yesterday" on the new
(!?!) album (like Cat Stevens) I'll start to wonder!

Subject: i speak...

In seth's last tangent... i unfortunately agreed with most of what he
was saying about the newer material. My fav album will always be
"Badmotorfinger". Yes, some of it resides in the fact that it wasn't
too popular. But the main reasons are that it wasn't straight forward
rock. It was like dreamy metal with twisted giutars and a message, but
only if you read too far into the lyrics. The intensity of "1000
rooms wide" strikes me everytime. I still love "Searching" live... its
simply awesome.

Although the newer material is still good, it doesn't strike me with
the same unchanneled ferocity as "badmotorfinger."

And for those of you that have been here long enough, you know my
views on the "black hole sun" debacle.

Interestingly enough, my fav songs off the last two albums
respectively are "Head down" and "swith opens".... and the best solo
ever scorched by Kim has to be (IMHO) "like suicide".

enough for now,

First of all it's Tupac/2pac not 2 pak. Second, if you knew anything
