Here's a quote from the March 1994 issue of Guitar School:

"The intro was a feedback melody. Many people think we used an E-bow.
I've seen transcriptions that have said to use an E-bow. The truth is,
I've never even seen an E-bow. I simply stood in front of the amp, got
the note ringing until it was feeding back, and slid my finger up the
fret on the string and dragged the feedback with it." - Kim Thayil.

The E-bow homepage (http://www.ebow.com) says that an E-bow was used in
Black Hole Sun, but this is highly doubtful seeing as the above
interview was performed just prior to the release of Superunknown. I'd
be very quick to say that Soundgarden has never used an E-bow...

I hope that helps.

Subject: Brixton review from The Independent newspaper

Just found this review of the Brixton gig in The Independent On Sunday.
Following on from reviewing a Power Station gig, Nicholas Barber writes..

'After All, Seattle's Grammy-winning Soundgarden do the heavy thing metal
thing with five times the creativity, 10 times the speed and 20 times the
volume. But heavy metal it remains. I positively identified at least two
instances of headbanging at the Brixton Acadamy on Thursday, and one of
somebody making devil's horns hand gestures. I don't care if Chris Cornell
does have spikey hair, I'd recognise his throat-lacerating howl anywhere:
it's Bruce Dickinson as I live and breathe.

To think it was only half a decade ago that grunge seemd to be metal's
cooler, smarter, less posturing little brother. Now Soundgarden simply
purvey heavy metal's breast-beating bombast while omitting the studded
codpieces and the avian decapitation. And it's so self-aggrandisingly
gloomy. Whine, whine, pseudo-poetic whine. "I play, I'm sick and lame,"
goes 'Rhinosaur.' "Drawing the hordes/I wait, and show the lame/The
meaning of harm/ The skulls beneath my feet..." Doesn't this juvenile
morbidity make you want to tickle them, or at least give their goatee
beards a good tug? And Chris, what's with the line "Nothing seems to kill
me no matter how hard I try"? Isn't that a bit sick, as well as being
crassly untrue, bearing in mind that your fellow Seattle grunge star found
that a shotgun did the trick quite effectively?'

Nicholas Barber must have REALLY hated Power Station! And it's not my
typing, the article really did say "sick and lame".

Hey List!

While reading the PJam whinegroup...er, newsgroup....I'm wondering if SG
is planning a Letterman appearance? They'll be in Toronto on a
Wednesday night and the first of three NYC dates is on a
Friday...leaving Thursday open for an appearance :-) Industry lurkers
is this a possibility? (Like you'd answer) Actually this would be a
great time for SG to get some more pub. The video for BUtOW (Stairway
'96) should be in heavy *crush* (love that word frank :) rotation in the
middle of November plus they'll be in the middle of a tour about to be
playin NYC...etc. etc. etc.

I checked the Late Night homepage and they give guest until the first
week of October. I wonder if Dave will be on Vacation at that time?
Hmmm....Maybe if this post is prophetic and SG does do Letterman...we'll
finally know the real identity of "Dave" from the lyric:

"Been stuck inside and up all night at Dave's" :)

She's A Politican, Birth Ritual....

2. SUPERMAINSTREAM - aaaaaah! Been looking for this work quite awhile.

3. SuperUnInterview - don't know if this is worth it, but had to own

4. Hater - had heard it but never bought it, finally did

5. Fast Stories...from Kid Coma: Thank you Justin - i would have
teetered on whether to buy it today, but thanks to your review, i had
to!

6. Brad - another one I finally bought

7. Green River - found an import of outtakes (sorry Bortnik - but i
have been listening to Green River since you were probably in

8. Escape from LA Soundtrack - has some great stuff, Stabbing
Westward, Tool, Butthole Surfers, White Zombie, Deftones, etc.

BTW, E-Bow is sort of an electronic "bow". You wave it over the strings
to get slurred/slidey effects, among other things.

this.....

Supermainstream is unbelievable!!! One of the best things i have ever
ever ever ever bought! If i didnt before believe (which I did) that
SG is one of the most diverse bands around, it is now an undisputable
fact. I have never heard so many different styles on one CD in my
life. I listened to Heart Fist about 12 times...and i almost died and
went to heaven when i heard chris start to sing "Stranglehold"

However, after watching SNL again last night, and whincing once again
at CC's voice....and now hearing this CD, i am longing to press some
magic button to take me back to the early '90s (for music purposes
only, thank ya very much)...

One question, anyone else who has this (Steve or the guy with the new
RA he likes - sorry I forgot your name...or anyone) does the sound on
Unholy War fade in and out on yours too, or did I get a crappy CD?

To anyone who has ever pondered spending the $$$ for this CD, go to
the store right now - it is truly amazing.

<Gregg laughing>

Well, it looks like you are the God of music once again. Forgive us.
What musical instrument do you play? Do you play one? If you did,
I don't think you'd have this goddamn attitude. If you recall,
way back in Scr Life days, SG wasn't exactly a multitude of swirling
sound. They were a power chord playing, 4/4 timin' rock band. Sure,
they kicked ass, but they got WAY better.
And we know who Green River and Mudhoney are, but what the hell do they
have to do with Soundgarden, besides the fact that they all come from
SEattle? Green River broke up, members become MlB, then Wood died,
then some members became PJ. Wow. There's nothing of Soundgarden in
there, huh? Unless, of course, you're trying to say that SEattle is
the only place where good music comes from. That's a pretty elitest
thing to say. I guess everyone who has a band, but doesn't live in
Seattle should quit according to you.
I think you should try to remember that music is based on opinion. I
don't remember a survey being taken among the list of "who likes bush".
I don't think that really matters when it comes to Soundgarden. Maybe
you're just bitter because the best sonic youth can do is make a bunch
of fucking noise. I wonder if they ever check to see if their strings
are in tune.
And yes, I wouldn't doubt that some of us became fans post-Superunknown.
But most of these people probably went out and bought Ultramega OK, LtL
and BmF very soon after. I'm willing to bet that these people hunt down
rare vinyl pressings such as HIV Baby with a passion. These people
are not lesser fans than anyone just because they discovered Soundgarden
later on in their careers. Maybe I'm not such a big Led Zeppelin fan
because they broke up when I was 2, and I only started to buy their
albums when I was 11. In this idiotic assesment, you've attempted
to prove that you only you are a true Soundgarden fan, but in truth
you've proved that you are an ignorant moron.
Thank you I'm done.
Gregg

ps don't bother replying. We're all stupider for having listened to you

A Poignant Family Soundgarden Story
by Jezebel

...So my Mom calls me the other day (I'm at work) and shrieks, "Rocket From
The Crypt is opening for Soundgarden on Nov. 19 at Brandeis! Guess what I
want for my 48th birthday?"
No, you must be mistaken, I say, calmly, since I work in a cubicle. That's
just too good to be true.
"Well, I heard it on the radio. Now you find out from that list where and
when to get tickets, that's what I want." (I keep telling my mom to join
the list, but she got annoyed with the AIC list which is apparently a young
hip incrowd talking mostly to each other, and justifying any and all rude
behavior of the band members because they are gods and can do no
wrong...and she's turned off lists now)
Hm. So I write to Seth, apologetically asking him for information that is
surely in my unread list pile somewhere (sorry! I just caught up today, and
yes it was), offering him a ride to the show as trade for the info. He
gives me the phone number for ticketbastard (I DO like that name) and I
actually woke up at 10am on a Saturday, disentangled myself from someone,
and dialled for half an hour before I woke up enough to think:
Gee. if this number ends in -2000, then dialling -2001 is most likely going
to be ticketbastard still...a long shot, but I found myself, happily,
instantly on hold instead of being deafened by that "dee dee DEEEE--all
circuits are busy now" woman (don't you ever wonder what she looks like?
For some reason I'm convinced that she has a beehive). It worked for Seth
too! Try it!
I listened to an obnoxious repeating ad for fifteen long minutes and then
yay! I got tickets and then of course had to call my mom for another half
hour (busy--she was calling too, with my credit card number) because
tickets are non-refundable! Yikes. It was a close one. After trying to
intercept the line through the operator was unsuccesful, I'd given up but
then got her as she was taking a break to use the bathroom (sorry, more
info than you needed).
She was in a foul mood. "I've been calling for an hour," she griped. "I'm
just not lucky. I've never been lucky."
"Thank God. I got em," I said.
"I knew it! You're lucky. I should've known! It's because you're a Leo with
a Pisces moon and and Aries rising and blah blah blah...."

Whatever. So if I'm so lucky, how come I don't have my SOMMS tee shirt yet?
(This should explain why I didn't buy more tickets and sell them to list
members, for which I feel guilty, but I'm a bit more cautious now...)

see you New Englanders Nov.19th,
Jezebel

p.s. I can wholeheartedly recommend Rocket From The Crypt's 'Circa...Now!.'
I saw them live once and it was a ball....but I don't like their new stuff
quite so much...oh well...

Subject: European Setlists...

to those of you who have gone to shows in the UK or Europe, i know
that they've reportedly played about 7 songs from each album, but can
someone personally e-mail me a set list? it doesn't have to be in any
type of order, just a general list of the live songs. oh, and have
they played "waiting for the sun" yet? i'm DYING to hear this song,
i've never even heard the original version by the doors. can't wait
for November 21!! see you in Philly Matt!!

I talked to a friend of mine today who interned for MTV news this summer.
She told me she got to call Silver Mngmt. about the Kim/Heather Mifflin
incident. She didn't elaborate very much but I plan on getting more
details. She's a big AiC fan, so she was pretty excited and the
uniqueness was not wasted on one who didn't appreciate it.

is it possible for a list member to not like or even hate a recorded
soundgarden song. Personally i do not, but it would be interesting to
hear if anyone does, please give reasons to your hatred.

Well i don't like I awake and the one Hiro sings Circle of Power (i
think). Hate is too strong a word to use really, i hate Billy Ray Cyrus'
music but i could never hate any Soundgarden songs. Well i could
but i don't see it ever happening.
