hmmm... from what I remember, a poem is a composition in verse... and is
characterized by a heightenedly developed form and the use of language
and rythym to express an imaginative interpretation of the subject... in
that case I would say that both SG and SDD are poets...
If you want to, you can choose a SG song, define it's meter, ryhme,
subject, and use of metaphors to make your point to your teacher... If
presented right, it will be a success... Later, Taylor

I'd love to see an SG b-sides collection,
like a lot of other bands do, gather the b-sides and slap them
on one CD in a listenable order. I know I'D buy it...

Subject: Met Them

This is about when I met Soundgarden Thursday night. You know ,Kite??
We both, me and my brother, got to the academy 6.15pm and got 2 passes with
VIPs on them from Steve Woods the tour manager. He said we were early as
we were meant to meet them at 8pm. He said he could arrange it for earlier,
but we said no thanx, as we thought it might piss them off. Then we watched
Soundgarden do their soundcheck for about 25 min which was ace!
The woman came up to us in the guest bar about 7.45pm and bought us drinks
She said that they're 'really shy'. When we walked to the corrider there
was Matt Cameron checking out these photos, we were introduced "This is
Gemma she won the competition", "CONGRATULATIONS!" he sang. He came up and
shook my hand and said 'Hi' smiling.
Then we went inside and the room was bright red, and behind the door on a
black
leather sofa was Chris Cornell, laid out, he looked up and the woman,Val, said
the same as before "Hey!" he said and shook my hand with a sly grin.
Ben Shepard was on the far left of the room on a chair, with a black net on
his
head "this is Lawrence of Arabia" Val said he smiled and waved. Then Matt came
back in and someone was about to introduce us again when he said "We already
met" and Chris said almost laughing "They've exchanged phone numbers".
There was a group there called Eleven and Chris asked Matt "What was the crowd
like for Eleven?" and Matt said "Pretty good for Eleven" then Chris said
"What does that mean?" and Matt replied "I don't know".
I met Susan Silver and shook hands, she is really nice and we were talking
about the pictures I got them to sign. Kim was missing for a while, but
when he came in ,he is a big bloke, he said "Hi" and shook my hand and
smiled. Susan asked if there was anything I wanted, like what your life
I felt like saying ; )
When Kim signed this picture he said "God i'm ugly" and signed on his face
and Ben is a nutter in a funny way. Then Chris asked me if I wanted anything
put on the picture of himself and I said "I don't care, anything" so he put
' I CARE '. Susan suggested to take a photo of all of us. So Chris said
he couldn't be bothered to get up and asked if I would mind sitting on the
floor, IF I WOULD MIND!!. Kim wanted to sit on the arm of the sofa where
Chris's head was and Chris said "You'll squash my head" and when Kim sat on
the arm Chris went "ARGH" which made us laugh. There were really great guys
and not at all miserable as everyone makes them out to be. On the way out
Chris shook my hand firmly and for a long time and said "Thanx alot" as we
left the room. : )

             Hope this weren't too long
                           Kite
Damn I forgot to mention the list to the guys, but I told Val and she works
with them so maybe she'll tell them. She also works with AIC, what a
great job!

Subject: The Rockview Interview

I've just receive this really weird Soundgarden interview CD called The
Rockview Interviews. It's only just been released but is in fact from an
interview when Jason was in the band.

Soundgarden - mostly Chris - are being interviewed by some weirdo called
Crazy Chris Tetley who is apparently on every American rock band's list of
people to know in the UK if they want to break worldwide. Never heard of
him myself and he's a crap interviewer! Anyway, it's at soundcheck and
while Chris is interviewing Chris (!) the others are playing pool - you can
hear the cue hit the ball, talking in the background (lot's of 'fuck!'s) -
you can even hear a toilet flushing! I heard a female voice in the
background (Susan?). It's a little like being there and eavesdropping on
someone's conversation.

Chris and Jason were talking about skateboarding and how they wish they had
brought their boards to Europe. They talked about the Seattle scene -
stuff we all know about now, but this interview was pre Nevermind. Chris
described Loud Love as sounding like breaking a brick of ice. How it was
cool to see Billy Joel perform when they went to the Grammys for Ultramega
OK. But the interviewer was so untogether - like he hadn't got his
questions prepared - or he was stoned. He looks like one of those guys who
is way too old to have long platinum blond hair. UK sommsters can picture
Peter Stringfellow meets Pat Cash or Jimmy Savile and they'll get the idea!

The pictures of SG on the packaging, including a mini poster, are great.
Chris with long hair - mostly pre-goatee. And a very nice sweaty, topless
one that Shroom would certainly want to lick!

I wondered if anyone else had head of this series of Rockview Interviews
and why they've only just got around to releasing the SG one six years
later? It only cost me 6.99 (sterling) so even though it's not an
absolute must-have, it is worth checking out if you can find it cheap
enough.

It's on Rockview Records RVCD 214.

Subject: Brixton Show/ Metal Hammer interview

Eleven were on before Moby? Shit, I didn't know they were playing or I
would have made sure I got there early. The ads in the back of Kerrang
only mentioned Moby. Damn damn damn!

Also, how did Stephen Russell find out about BUTOW/Dusty remix being
released as a single in the UK on October 21? The dreaded Kerrang is about
the only music mag that features SG on an almost weekly basis - in the UK -
and they haven't mentioned that either.

BTW, everyone try and get hold of the October issue of Metal Hammer. There
is a killer interview with Chris and a free CD that includes trax from AIC
Unplugged and Sponge. I have typed the article up on Wordpad , but haven't
found a way to attach it yet. (I've only had a pc for a week, so bear with
me. Don't anyone else DARE send it to Seth before me as I gave myself
eyestrain and finger damage typing it up!)

Do SG have a country song? Well, the mandolin duel on Ty Cobb sounds
pretty country to me, but given the trouble someone has already had with JC
Pose in the classroom, maybe 'fuck you all' sung 50 billion times is not
the way to spread the word. Actually, I like Hank Williams as well. In the
above mentioned Metal Hammer interview Chris says he likes T Rex!! So
*that's* telling Michael Bortnik not to be such a narrow minded idiot!

One more thing, should I stick to one SG subject per email? Am I getting
carried away emailing everyday? It's just so good to exchange info/views
on SG with other obsessors. People at work think I'm nuts and being very
teenage ( I wish!) but I find I need some kind of SG fix at least once a
day and checking out the digest and Seth's site is pretty exciting for me.
Maybe I'll calm down after a while.

Bye for now.

Yeah, I have Cherry Lane's original tab book for Superunknown and i
wondered why the hell would he move the power chord all the way up to the
second fret(w/ open A string) just to get an E power chord when there's
already one at the 7th fret on the sixth string. Then I got a guitar
world w/ fobd, and they have it right. Cherry Lane gets on my nerves
sometimes....like not giving me the lead guitar parts for Cracker's
Kerosene Hat book...hell, that book doesn't even have tabs....

And to whoever it is whose teacher thinks Snoop Dogg is more of a poet
than Chris Cornell, drop me a line. Your teacher is going to get a three
page essay to the contrary. All snoop does is wins the contest for
saying fuck and motherfucker the most times in one record. That gets
old, unless you're like 13 or 14 and still get excited everytime somebody
says a cuss word....

And the guy who said that the world would be a better place w/out 2pac
and snoop, wasn't necesarily making a racist comment. These two people
are known for hardcore drugs and belittling women, not necesarily the
greatest things for the world. And because they are in positions of
power, people without minds of their own are influenced by them.
Now don't get me wrong i like rap. I even like gangsta rap. Cypress
Hill is one of my favorite groups of all time. But the only drug you
hear about from them is marijuana, which is not even physically
addictive.

And how do i feel about 2pacs death? You play with fire, you get burned.

Well, back to sg content....everyone hear about Kyle Petty? They tried
to charge him with hit and run and reckless driving, when in reality, it
wasn't even legally reckless driving...reduced to a lesser charge and
paid off a $65 fine....imagine charging son of richard with reckless
driving...he might be coming up on their right...

And hey, Shroom, i'm hereby starting the NC chapter of KTMS. Besides, it
was down in Rockingham where this whole thing started (actually i'm sure
it was in some other city near there, considering we drove 5 miles into
rockingham and found 1 place to eat...no way there could be a hotel there)
And i still have the black asphalt dust on my hat from the speedway!
Hehehe...KTMS unite! laters. -j

Question 2
As of right now, have you ever seen soundgarden in concert? And if you

much every song)

Question 4
Do you own all six (Down On The Upside, Superunknown, Badmotorfinger, Louder

Everything these days is advertising. It's the same thing as going to a
movie and seeing brand names flagrantly displayed: someone paid to have SG
mentioned in that show.

Isn't it interesting that SG is about to launch a major US tour to support
their new album around the same time this new show is reaching millions of
American households?

Trivialization? That's pretty much part and parcel of signing a huge record
contact. Exploitation? Yeah, you could call it that. But as long as we all
still enjoy their music, what's the diff?

It is fifths, that song's tuned to open-D: dadgbe (just tune the low-E
string down to D). Just bar the three lowest strings and you gotta a
root-fifth-root "power chord" that you can bend, which is what they do. SG
loves these so-called "open tunings" In fact, almost the entire DOTU album
uses open tunings.

(After writing this I realize I'm probably talking about things that are
pretty obvious. If so, forgive me.)

Yes, I would have to say that everman does prance around like the
ultimate butt-rock weenie. A semi-unrelated note reminds me of the
Louder Than Live video when Everman is smashing his bass (which was
subsequesntly given away in a contest). While everman is swinging the
body of his instrument around by the strings, Chris is standing on his
guitar, which is face down. It is some of the worse abuse of musical
instruments I have ever seen. For people who do not own or have not seen
this, I will make an mpeg clip available to Seth sometime next week.
Also when I saw them live in '94, Ben charged through Matt's kit at the
end of the set. Do they still do this?

Well caryn, im surprised at you...when you stop and think for a minute
before flaming anyone with an opinion, you might see that this might not be
racist, just another SG fan that doesn't like rap music, and all the
unnecessary violence associated with it. The 2-pac death is a perfect
example. I don't think the world will ever see Chris Cornell gunned down
by Jonathan Davis just because their record companies don't like each
other. For christ sakes, caryn, we are suposed to be a family here, not
some dysfunctional band of maniacs who can't agree on anything.
the rest of your post, as most of yours are, was very well thought out

Subject: A bit of SG related news
From: "Matthew Lawrence" <mattlaw@cogs.susx.ac.uk>

Hi,
I'm not back on the list or anything (yet) but I thought I'd just share a
bit of SG related news.. First off I just saw SG the night before last at the
Brixton academy and I'm happy to say that they kicked arse. The new songs
sound SO good live.. The mosh for Ty Cobb was incredible. The only problem was
that I bought my tickets from a tout (bad planning left me tickless until the
night of the gig) for about twice the selling price.. Plus I was buying for me
and my sister so I ended up forking out 60 pounds for 2 tickets :( But on the
other hand, it was probably the best money I ever spent.. I've never seen SG
live before (except at Reading) so this was a new and incredibly rewarding
experience.

I can't remember the set list, but Chris said it was 7 songs from each of the
last 3 albums. I can list them out of order

Rusty Cage
Outshined
Slaves and Bulldozers (last before the encore)
Jesus Christ Pose (very last song)
Searching with my good eye closed
Drawing Flies
Let Me Drown
My Wave
Fell on Black Days
Mailman
Black Hole Sun (Chris solo)
Spoonman (first song they played)
Kickstand
Pretty Noose
Ty Cobb
Blow up the Outside World
Burden in my Hand
Never the Machine Forever (1st encore)
Boot Camp (with a funny thing before it that might have been a brand new song)

And I think that's it.. Bloody good set. But it doesn't end there, last week I
got my hands on another copy of Screaming Lise/Fopp, both versions of the
Outshined single, Louder than Live video and the JCP video.. But wait, get
this.. They were all signed by every member of the band.. They were going for
100 pounds for the lot from an ex-fan.. I couldn't believe my luck.

So there you go.. I'll resubscribe once I'm actually officially back at
university and fully able to keep reading it...

Well, let me tell you about my escapade.. I woke up and promptly called
Ticketmaster at 10am. It was busy. Very very busy. I ended up calling
Brandeis twice, and I couldn't get anything. So in a DESPERATE ATTEMPT
(hehehehe... one a my band's songs) I called my friend Johny D, who's
mother is SO NICE to drive us to Boston, that I'm payin for Johny's
ticket. Anyway.. I call him and blurt out, "Can I borrow fifty
dollars?" And he actually did :> So I went off to Coconuts, the
nearest Ticketmaster dealer people (I had my mom's credit card number,
so I was gonna order from the phone, but one has to pay cash only at
record stores, etc.) I was going bugshit because I thought it was going
to be sold out definitely. I got to Coconuts, and asked the guy if I
can get tickets for Soundgarden in Boston. He's like "Hold on.." so
I'm WAITING and WAITING and the guy goes "The computer's kinda slow,
it's gonna take a while." "Well, are their tickets available?" He
mutters "yea" kinda unintelligibly. So I'm waiting and who comes behind
the counter but my old friend Sam who I haven't seen in a couple years
and I really turned him onto Soundgarden. So we're catching up on old
times and exchanging phone numbers and he says that if he doesn't have
to work then he's going to the show, too. And he ended up selling me my

No, I won't be going unless I can find someone to sell me a ticket,
because I could not get through to Ticketmaster this morning. I dialed

this wasn't a flame. again, i do not like most rap music any more, i used
to very much, and again, while i do not like these people's music or their
thoughts or way of life, i do NOT wish their death. that is not my place,
not my right. i felt that the comments had a racist tone, the individual
in question has yet to defend or comment on his words, so perhaps there
was some truth to that.

and it is my right to say so. period. and it is your right to disagree
with me, and say so. but this was not a flame. and i really could care
less if i 'get everyone pissed at me'. because one, that's not going to
happen, and two, so what?

why is this list just full of men trying to tell women what to do and what

Badmotorfinger. And I know that these statements are common for a lot of people in

makes a stupid generalisation; and this generalisation is one of the worst ways of
thinking, not because I say so, but because sociology teaches that. (like: all black

you saw this in 94, geoff? I remember reading that ben did the
same thing on the lolla tour of 1992 (very soon after he joined the band),
because he thought that the band was getting a little too high on
themeselves. my memory is foggy, but I think ben thought he was going to
get thrown out of the band for hurling himself into matt's kit. not
surprisingly, the band loved it and clapped him on the back. I just
wonder how often matt would want his cymbals crashing down around his
ears?

something long-overdue happened last friday - I bought fast
stories...from kid coma. that mysterious and far out woman from south
australia mailed me a tape of the first truly long-player, and I was
impressed from the get-go, and had to buy it last week when I saw it for
only $21. now I seem to like it more and more every time I listen to the
damn thing. it is an *amazing* album, one I should have been listening to
a long time ago.

the music is very spacy; hypnotic but still with a garage quality
to it (even though it's produced by the team of adam kasper, john agnello
and jon auer). to me there are a lot of parallels between this record and
the hater one. not clean by any stretch of the imagination, but still
entirely listenable. it's a little weird, because I heard the heart and
lungs ep, and didn't really like it (sort of like when I first heard the
hater record, and only really liked matt's roll towards the end of
blistered). maybe I'll have to buy it now :)

after hiro left, I think soundgarden's music changed quite a bit.
this wasn't something I was able to pin down before, but now that I hear
fast stories, I can understand what hiro's part in sg's sound was. I
think the original trippiness of their earlier stuff on ultramega and
screaming life (let's face it, the band they first were) owed a lot to
hiro's musicianship.. in terms of song-writing, I think that kim has always
leaned further to the "metal" side, and so has matt (although to a lesser
degree recently). chris, on the other hand, seems to be able to write in
a lot of styles, but writes straighter songs than hiro ever did. that's
why I think ben, with songs like head down and switch opens, was the
perfect replacement for hiro. but also in a cool way, I think ben could
switch places with hiro now, and truly would still sound pretty much the
same.

anyhow, back to the truly record. if you already own it, and have
owned it for a long time, I applaud you. but if you haven't tried truly
out yet, I strongly suggest you do so soon. there are some great songs
(blue flame ford, soul slasher, hot summer 1991 and chlorine), and even
though they couldn't be thought of as soundgarden songs you can imagine sg
playing them. if you like hater or swirly yet trashy music, then you
should find the album (now that the wellwater album won't be out (damn
lawyers to hell!) till january next year). ok, the ad is over now :)

Yeah, but there's sort of a story to it. It was obvious that the band
was not impressed with the crowd. Not that we/they were roudy, but quite
the opposite. Everybody in the stands was sitting down! Chris made
various comments and unsuccessful attempts to get everybody to stand up.
They finished their set, and came back for an encore. They started
playing Black Hole Sun and Chris said "Come on! Get up!", and finally
most of the crowd stood up. They only played one more song after that,
at which point Ben charged through the drumkit. My conclusion is that
Ben did that so that they would not, could not, play another song. Sort
of like punishment for the crowd. Now I'm interested in this. How many
people have seen shows in which they have trashed the drumkit??
