Subject: Brilliant Brixton Show!!!!!!!!!!!

Last night I saw Soundgarden and went to heaven!!!!

This was only my second time. The first time, at Reading last year, I'd had
to suffer loads of lesser bands -screechy Babes in Toyland, White Zombie
without all the stage stuff (what's the point?) and was pretty tired by the
time SG came on stage. And they were - okay. This summer I flew out of
Seattle THE DAY BEFORE the Showbox gig!!!
So I was excited about Brixton but also hoping they'd be a bit more
enthusiastic than at Reading. Luckily I had Sommsters' postings from the
Glasgow and Wolverhampton gigs to keep my hopes up!

Moby sounded damn good from the bar ( I wasn''t being 'cool' and London-ish
I was with friends who like Soundgarden, but weren't going to push
themselves to the front as soon as we got there.) Anyway, when we finally
went in, I left them to it and went as near the stage as I could. It's
standing room only downstairs at Brixton and I managed to get a place
directly in front of Chris and about a third of the way back.

It seemed like an age standing there watching the roadies check the
equipment. I saw the CC lookalike. Hmmm. Similar, but not really IMHO. I
kept one eye on the door at the back of the stage and was suddenly rewarded
with the sight of Matt talking to the crew! He was dressed in a blue
sleeveless tee shirt and blue shorts. Lots of others saw him cos they
started cheering.

The lights finally dimmed at 9.20 pm and the crowd went wild! There they
were standing in fornt of us!!!!

I can't remember the order of the songs except Spoonman was first. Chris
was really into it and moved around, swinging his guitar. Then they went
into Searching with my Good Eye Closed.

After that (in no particular order..
Pretty Noose
Ty Cobb
Blow up the outside world
Burden in my hand
Let me drown
My wave
Black Hole Sun (just Chris)
 Kickstand
mailman
Fell on black days
An unkind
Outshined
Bootcamp
Rusty cage
Drawing flies
Slaves and bulldozers
encores - Never the machine and Jesus Christ pose
They were all awesome - Chris did some fantastic screams - no voice
problems at all. I was so pleased they played Slaves - it's so great live.

Chris did look thinner, but not ill or anything. I think he's just not
working out or something. My friend Di (a Eurythmics fan really!)
thought he had a pretty sexy body even so. He wore a plain grey tight tee
shirt - and no he didn't take it off - and black jeans. No rings. One
pendant type thing. He'd had his hair cut a bit.

Kim had a teeshsirt on with a logo I couldn't decipher. And black jeans.
Matt was in blue as I said. Ben in black with a white tee underneath.

Chris looked really into it all the way through. He didn't say a lot,
except to tell some joke about him fucking Prince Charles (oh no, don't
start the gay rumours again!) and the punchline was osmething about British
beef. It fell a bit flat because I don't think people could hear what he
said. I remember him saying something like 'imagine me naked fucking...'
andI went off into my own little dream world! He asked us if they were
loud enough, and of course we all shouted back NO!

Kim looked pretty happy - and really rocked out in the BMF songs. I swear
he even jumped about a bit! Matt was drumming like crazy. Ben just
played. I think I saw him smile once - sort of, reluctantly, but he didn't
seem to get into it. He did move around a bit towards the end, but he
wasn't manic. Maybe tour burn out has set in already! But I was checking
out Chris mostly - when I wasn't trying to keep on my feet!

I guess I am too old and boring now to stand near the front. Moshing is
okay, but some guys really slammed into people in a dangerous way. The
worst offenders all wore Nirvana tee shirts! My friends stooed further back
and still had a great view - without getting knocked over - so maybe next
time I see them at Brixton (great venue) I'll keep away from the moshpit.
I say I'm old (well, 38 if you must know) but it was reassuring to see a
lot of the audience were mid to late twenties and above. At the risk of
getting flamed by all you teenage sommsters (who of course I am excluding)
I think SG are too deep for a lot of kids. Yeah you can just rock out to
them, but then you miss a lot of what they're about.

I think that's about it. got to go to work now (as if I'll acutally be
able to concentrate!)

Hello everyone,

Yes, you can rest assured that the List Thug is going to have a little fun
with this bastard. I've already told him what he can do with his himself, his
hand, and a few abstract objects that he may have lying about. If everyone on
the list sends him 5 CC emails telling him to go to hell, or what have you,
he will have 3,000 messages in his little mailbox there. (The List Thug can
add too! What will he think of next!!!) If I'm not mistaken, Michael Bortnik
told me personally that he wishes to be signed up to every mailing list that
we know of, and a few that we don't. So, give the guy a hand, and sign him
up. He's done so much for us, let's give a little back. I'm a charitable guy,
I am more than willing to spend an hour or two to help him on his quest to
find the perfect mailing list. After all, he's heard of Mudhoney! (I often
wonder who HASN'T heard of Mudhoney) So, I emplore each and every one of you
to put forth your most heartfelt efforts in searching both far and wide for
mailing lists to sign this fuckhead up on. I think he especially would like
to be signed up to any of the following mailing lists: Bush, Silverchair,
Oasis, Candlebox (I threw that in there for good measure), Better Than Ezra,
and Paula Abdul (another treat). And maybe Green Day and Rancid too, if we
can find any. I am also aware that Michael is going to be castrated sometime
in the near future. Yes, it's true. Someone has to protect the world from
such ignorance. As we all know, stupid people shouldn't breed, because
ignorance breeds ignorance. And there are enough stupid people in the world
to give me a headache. (Thank god for Hydrocodone) Well, I'm off to do my
part, it's up to each and every one of you now to do your part, make me
proud!!!

Aaron

Listen, right now I seem to be in a minority, but I say leave the guy alone.
He does have a right to his own opinion, this IS still a free country, I

What a night!

I started the night by crashing the car (not my fault you understand =) on
the way to the train station
I was not popular!

When I got to Brixton the first thing I did was swap my upstairs tickets
for downstairs with a tout - 10quid well spent!

When we (me and my little bro) got into the venue, first thing we did was
get the obligitory t-shirt (I'm still waiting for my SOMMS t-shirt Nm if
your still listening!) at which point we heard the openers start (bloody
early!).

Eleven were OK - not brilliant but they had a couple or three good songs
whilst the rest were below average. They played for about half an hour (I
think) and went off to muted applause.

Moby were farily good, playing very fast, short thrashy punk indispersed
with the odd slower song, a couple of which were excellent. I think they
deserve an entry into the Guiness Book of Records for the fastest cover of
Sabath's Paranoid ever heard!

Sg were absolutely amazing. I was worried that they wouldn't live up to my
expectations but instead they managed to surpass them!

I can't remember the set list (It was long) but it went something like:

Spoonman
Drown Me In You
another song?
Pretty Noose
BIMH
BHS
Ty Cobb
FoBD
Doors song? (I didn't recognise it as bootcamp)
Bootcamp
BUTOW
Drawing Flies
Never The Machine Forever
Outshined

Encore:
Bad joke involving Prince Charles & mad cows disease (Chris really ought to
stick to singing!)
song I can't remember
JCP!!!

I'm fairly sure there were a couple more songs and I would be amazed if I
got the order right but it was something like above.

I was at the front throughout the entire set, in front of Chris & Ben - I
came out of the venue absoutely soaked in sweat and completely dehydrated -
well worth it!!!

The only things that detracted from the set was Chris' bad joke and the
sound quality - there were several times when there was really bad feedback
and I saw Matt signaling to the sound desk a couple times.

Well, I've now fulfilled one of my big ambitions as well as I could have
hoped to - hopefully I'll get another chance to see them next year!

     Hi all,

     This is my first posting

Been lurking on this list for many months and been an SG fan for many
years. Saw them live for the 1st time this summer at LOLLA at Randal's
Island, N.Y. Will be seeing them again on 11/17 at Roseland in N.Y.C.

Anyway, getting to the subject at hand here; was cable-surfing last
night and came upon a new sitcom by the name of "Suddenly Susan",
starring Brooke Shields. The point at which I entered the story has
her sitting at her work desk (works at advertising agency), nursing a
hangover. In walks some guy, slaps a set of headphones on her head,
causing her tortured brain to do somersaults, and says "I'm reviewing
the latest Soundgarden. What do you think?"

Well, what do you guys think? Is this kind of exposure a good or bad
thing? Does it go towards providing overdue recognition, or towards
     trivialization and exploitation?

     Food for thought

by Snoop Doggy Dogg. After class, I ask him why he allowed Snoop Dogg and
denied SoundGarden. He said, "Snoop Dogg is a poet, the lead singer of
SoundGarden is not." I told him that he needed to learn the deinition
of poetry....before he determined what is and what is not poetry.

THe whole set was ace. Jesus Christ Pose is AMAZING.I saw Soundgarden at
the Reading Festival last year, a load of people didn't like them but I
knew they were ace.The sun was setting, blah, blah, blah.
Anyway,I'm no great writer of reviews but last night was certainly a good gig
They even played Boot Camp.Isn't that a great track.

OK, put your reasoning caps on...
Actually, even though the presentation was complete ANTI-whatever, Mr.
Bortnick does make a case. If people can get around his obvious
bitterness and try to understand what he is saying through his jonny
rotten-esque rendition, there is viable subject matter here...

Let's face it...what used to be indie is popular music now... and the
story of popular music goes like this... ahem... you have originators,
then you have good follow ups, then you have outright imitations until
someone new comes around with an original sound for a new generation...

Now... there are PEOPLE who prided in being "indie" back in the day when
they sat in the lunchroom together and made fun of the jocks and
cheerleaders... PEOPLE who watched all those same jocks come home from
college with stylish eddie vedder hairdoos... PEOPLE who saw the
moderately wealthy suburban kids and fraternity kids join into the
alternative schema... PEOPLE who saw the transition of alternative
culture to pop culture so fast that it made them sick....

I can understand his message... however, I can't understand the means to
which he spread it... List Thug or no List Thug... it would be totally
childish to retaliate. though... ...Later, Taylor

Other than that, I have been totally enamored with SG since discovering
them about a year and half ago. Cornell and co. are really something
special as far as i am concerned. In fact, I have just put together a band
and I hope to convince the other guys to jam on some SG covers (although
they would do no justice). If anyone wants to talk SG or about their
bands, they can e-mail privately as well. I saw SG this summer at
Lollapalooza and was very impressed (especially SearchingWMGEC). I wish I
could see them at Roseland, cause I saw Rage Against the Machine there in
August and would love the close contact with the bandd! Anyway, later

that comment is disgusting and has no place here. not to mention that
it's racist, which makes it even WORSE (if possible). you don't like rap
music? t hat's fine. that doesn't mean sentiments like this are
appropriate. i may not like them either, but i hardly wish their death.

> Chris is a remarkable poet , you have to be deaf not to admit that.

perhaps the professor was not aware that chris was the *lyricist* for the
band? sounds to me he thought that chris was only the singer, in which
case, yes, he is correct.

i would also argue that rock lyrics, though beautiful sometimes, are not
strictly by academic definition, poetry. but if he's going to allow snoop
doggy dog, he can certainly allow chris cornell. perhaps by giving the
professor a little more information you would be allowed to present
soundgarden lyrics in class.

Yes, I noticed this originally a while ago from the FOBD video . . . rather
than moving from the 7th fret down to the 2nd, he just moves the chord up to
