Tuesday 17th September, 1996.....

S O U N D G A R D E N (Manchester Apollo, Support :- MOBY, ELEVEN)
- ---------------------

After a long train journey, we settled down in the bar for a few
drinks before heading upstairs to assume our seats. MOBY was about half way
through his twisting set of hardcore punk songs. So, we waited.... and
eventually MOBY left the stage, giving way to a horde of tech people who all
scurried about taking things apart and generaly doing their thing until the
stage was set.

The crowd volume slowly rose until Chris & co ran on stage, the
heavens opened and the opening chords of 'Spoonman' filled the arena.
'Right', I thought, this must surely be heaven !

For the trainspotters out there (and Shroom), Chris was wearing a
matching black shirt and pants type outfit, and he looked really thin ! The
rest of the band where wearing much the same (black), with Matt being the
exception, sporting a T-shirt and stylish shorts ;)

After 'Spoonman' they continued their sonic assault with 'Searching
with my good eye closed', followed by 'Let me drown', 'Waiting for the sun'
and 'Pretty noose'. I remember exactly which songs they played, but not the
order they played them in. Chris was in FINE voice as usual, and the whole
band looked like they were really enjoying the gig; Ben was a COMPLETE
NUTTER and looked like he was having a fit most of the time !

Matt's performance was brilliant, fucking up for only 3 seconds of
the whole gig, he generally didn't miss a beat. Kim just stood there looking
godlike with his SG and got really excited during 'Rusty Cage' and started
leaping about all over the shop :)

After seeing them at Reading '95, and being really disapointed at
the sound quality and the bands general lack of enthusiasm, I'm pleased to
say that Soundgarden are infact the best live act in the world today..... as
if you didn't know that already.

        VERDICT : UltraMegaFuckingAmazing!

SET LIST - In no particular order (Sorry)

OK guys, here's the inside scoop. As we already know, Gerry Casale
will be directing the BUTOW video. Incidentally, he also directed
the Foo Fighters' "I'll Stick Around". Anyway, the video will have
Chris Cornell in a sterile kind of room, montitored, and being
forced to watch himself and the rest of the band on TV. A la
Clockwork Orange. Whoa] A VIDEO video] Guess the acting bug has

Now, this is what I HEARD. (From a pretty reliable source). So

short film with no band shots. But Gerry is a GOOD director, so
   I'm sure he won't disappoint.

Hey sommsters, I'm sorta new to the SG mailing list. I 've been reading
your letters for a couple of weeks now, but I haven't noticed anyone
mailing from Louisiana. I live in Baton Rouge and feel like an outsider
cause I listen to SG.(By the way I do agree that DOTU has the best sound
quality, but as far as songs go, BMF the one. Nuff said) Anyway,
if anyone lives around me, let me know. Also, is SG going to play any
closer to me than Austin. I know it would be worth it, but that's a long
drive.
I'll write sompin' more interesting next time.

To all you Texas Residents. You people are really fortunate to have
3 Soundgarden shows to attend. If I lived in Tejas,I would sure be
going to all 3 shows.Soundgarden is doing 1 show in Michigan,at the
palace of Auburn Hills. This venue can hold about 20,0000 to 40,000
people.I am calling Ticketmonster right now as i type. The operator
is telling me he has no info yet for this show on Nov12.
the show at the Palace is not really in Detroit, but in Auburn Hills,
which is next to Pontiac.I will be seeing soundgarden at the Aragon in Chicago
on Nov 10,and then on the 12th at the Palace. The Aragon is a much smaller venue
I think, so I'll be experiencing SG shows in 2 different kinds of environments.
If you have read this far, thanks for listening to me,I have more to say

I have a poster for the photo book, "Screaming Life" by Charles Peterson,
which chronicles the Seattle music scene, for any diehard Seattle music
collector who might want it. The photo on the poster is of, I believe, Kurt
Cobain, and he's basically playing his guitar while suspended in air, upside
down.

Email me if you want it...

On a SG note, I've been thinking about getting another tattoo, and I thought
maybe the BMF "wheel" would be something quite excellent to display on my...

I'd like to hear from any tattoo'd fans any thoughts/feelings about having a

Subject: Glasgow 16th September

Just got back from Glasgow after seeing sg. Brydon
pretty much covered most of the gig but I thought I'd add
a few extra bits. He missed Eleven, who were the opening
act (before Moby). They came on at about 7.40pm. They
were pretty amazing and I managed to nab their set list.
BTW, guys, whenever any of the ladies on this list start
drooling over Chris (not mentioning any names.....
Shroom) we should start on about Natasha from Eleven.
Mmmm... Yum. I was at the front for the whole gig so I
was about 15 feet away from her, and then right in front
of Kim when sg came on. Definitely the best place to be,
I'm pretty bruised as a result, but like Brydon said,
it's something you've got to accept. Luckily I had a
bouncer right in front of me so I knew when someone was
about to land on my head and had time to stick my arms up.

I asked the bouncer for sg's set list too, but I don't
think they had one because he couldn't find it.

Brydon's right, Chris was sweating pretty heavily, it
was dripping off his guitar at some points and I was like
"Hmmm... electricity and water...".

Kim was playing through several guild SG's, but I
don't remember seeing him with a Les Paul.

They also played "Let me drown" twice. Not quite sure
why.

Incidentally, to anyone who has the superunknown guitar
tab book you may be interested to know that the version
they have of "fell on black days" is wrong. I was
watching Kim's fingers while he was playing and it was
definitely a different version.

Was it a public school? If it was then by doing that he has violated
your rights. You should tell him that you will not allow that.
I hate all these neo-christian fundametalist types, trying to bann and

if youre referring to the first released SG recording put out on CZ

it's not a soundgarden cd -- 'screaming life' may be the title of the
book, but it's about charles peterson's EXCELLENT photography and the
seattle scene in general. therefore no call for sg to have more than one
song on the cd -- it's a book! you got the cd for free! ;-)

The original vinyl release is out of print, but it was re-released on
CD in 1994 as a joint project of C/Z and A&M. You should be able to

sounds are originating from mid air and not the speakers. Plus it is an
amazingly warm recording for a cd. Switch Opens sounds amazing too,
seriously if anyone has a stereo freak for a friend check out DOTU again,
it sounds like a differrent album because you can hear so much more stuff.

To you east coast SOMMS members, you either have tickets, or you're assed
out. I have yet to wait for soundgarden to announce southern California
dates. It would be so cool for them to do SoCal small club dates....

How can soundgarden sound so damn good? They sound like no other
band...you all know this. When Chris sings, it's kinda soulful. Kim plays
guitar with dark melodies. Ben's basslines kick ass. I can definitely
feel Matt's drums.

Sooner or later I will have to buy soundgarden tix from that ripoff company
named ticketmaster. wish me luck.....

It takes me: Let me Drown, My Wave, FoBD, and Mailman to walk to and from
the 7/11 (local mini market here in the states)

It takes me: Rusty Cage, Outshined, Slaves & Bulldozers, JCP to drive to
work

It takes me: Pretty Noose, Rhinosaur, Zero Chance, Dusty and Ty Cobb to
drive home.

It takes me: Most of Hater to do my time on the treadmill

The original Deep Six vinyl can now be found usually at collectible
auctions, with mint copies selling from $40-$60, unless of course you live
in Seattle, then the price is 2X or 3X the normal East Coast price.
Someone was selling a vinyl copy about 2 months ago on
alt.music.alternative; that's not a bad place to check...also check out
rec.music.collecting.vinyl (or something like that).

As seth said, and since I'm agonizing over beam redundencies, the CD
reissue release CD is available just about anywhere. :)

Hey Everyone!!
I've just been touched by the magic of SG...kinda. Anyway, I had
to change the flat tire on my car. So I get home from school, get
out all the shit, and change it to the spare...it took me AN HOUR!

So I take the tire to the auto shop that does tire repairs, wait
there while the guy repairs it, then lug it back to my house,
and set it down to change it. However, I got smart this time,
and decide to crank "Superunknown". Anyway, faster than you
could say "unsubscribe", I was dONE! It seemed fast, anyway.
I took me My Wave, FoBD, Mailman, and 2 min of Superunk to finish.

but HOW/ which ways are effective in having a more personal experience when
going to a sg concert. i mean, when i go to the Soundgarden concert, what ways
work and how can you like maybe meet them or get closer to them when they
aren't on stage and info on when they arrive and stuff. I may be sounding
really stupid here but I never even tried any of this before, and who better
to ask then soundgarden people here...

yep, really stupid post, but replyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cuz i really want to take

Here it is after 9 PM and I'm still at work - hate it... But I did find
the time to run home and get my BMF/SOMMS and Stolen Prayers CD. As I sit
here suffering (don't you feel sorry for me), I was looking at the jewel
box for Stolen Prayers and the cover picture of Chris is just the way I see
Chris in my mind when he is singing. I guess it's what I picture a true
rock'n'roller should look like - I know silly but bear with me...

In this picture he has a feeling on his face, not a look, a feeling. He is
doing just what he was created for.. God, I envy people who face each day
knowing they are doing what they want to do with their life. It must be a
wonderful feeling for Chris and the guys to create and perform their music.

And just a bit more, 4 track "Missing" I never really listen to it (really
listen) as I did tonight. I found myself repeating it - it has a very
hunting sound. Really like it.. If you turn the volume and bass up at the
end the drums give your that pounding feeling in your chest.. <Sigh> to
bad I'm not a true Soundgarden fan like Mr. Bortnik!!!!

Just some fyi: From Houston to El Paso is about 750 miles (1650 km) so it's
alot father than you think. Now Houston to Austin isn't bad at all: about
150 miles (330 km). But still... 600 miles from Austin to El Paso. Check
out a map of East Coast America & you'll see that Soundgarden is playing
shows alot closer together than 600 miles! Mind you all these distances are
estimates. I don't have a map here so I can't give exact distances.

I went to the local indy record store today. After browsing around for
about 15 min, the stupid store manager started following me. I guess he
thought I was gonna shoplift or something, which is pretty much impossible
since they only store the jewel cases and keep the CD's behind the
counter, but I digress. Anyways, when I finally picked out a CD that I
wanted, (UK Bimh single) he gave me the wrong cd! I mean, it was the bimh
single but the australian one, not the UK one. Difference being, the UK
one has "She's a Politician" and an interview with Chris. These kind of
people make me mad! (the store manager) He was too busy watching over me
and didn't even pay attention to what he put in the jewel case. Anyways,
I'm just so mad. Maybe it was a mistake. But I'm still so mad.

PS - Does anyone have any suggestions for taking creases out of posters? I
got a poster with the CD and it's been folded like a million times over.
And before I hang it, i'd like to get out the creases and wrinkles :>
