(it is a rerun) it contains all videos except Flower, Superunknown, and

Well Seth - My debut SG gig was fucking unbelievable to say the least!
I've spent the last couple of hours writing up a report for you - I
think it's too long to send in to the SOMMS list so do with it what
you will, if you think that you'd like to stick it on the homepage I'd
be more than happy!

Well I'm off to Shetland for a week before coming back down again for
university -- keep me subscribed and I'll wade through the shit when I
get back.

Cheers,
Brydon

Well, here goes...

Date: 16 September 1996
Venue: Glasgow Barrowlands
Artist: Soundgarden
(Support:	Moby )

I expected it to be fucking amazing. I phoned Stephen Johnstone from
the SOMMS list and we agreed to meet up at Killkenny's (Irish Bar) at
6:30. Cool. I also got hold of Jonathan Ritch, a friend of mine from
Shetland who's in Glasgow just now. Trouble is, his college course
started last week and he hasn't got a flat yet, so I didn't know if I
could get hold of him. I got a contact number from his Mam and tried
phoning... and I got hold of him! It was like 'You wanta see SG
tonight - I've got a spare ticket?' Needless to say he was fairly
excited by the idea so he agreed to meet me at Killkenny's at 7:00
after he did some homework (he does a Sound Engineering course and
this is his homework - get this: He has to select any musical track
and analyse it, describing where each instrument is placed in the mix.
Bastard! Homework that's fun to do... )

So I met Stephen and I had a pint - Stephen had to stick to Coke (the
drinking stuff, not the snorting stuff... ) as he was driving
*UNLUCKY!!* Ha Ha Ha Ha!!! Jonathan arrived and I hadn't seen him in
ages so we had another two pints while Stephen sipped him coke. We
left as it was coming up to 8:00 as the doors opened at 7:30. As we
walked into the Barrowlands we could hear that the support band - Moby
- - had already started! They were a huge fucking surprise... I don't
know if you've heared of him, but Moby is a techno artist - but after
hearing some heavy stuff he was inspired to try it himself... and it's
fucking excellent! It was powerful as fuck and he ripped through half
an hour plus of solid crowd-pleasing aggression - you're unlucky not
to have him for the US tour. In the delay before SG, Stephen, Jonathan
and myself made our way to the front - about the second row - and
waited with baited breath for the mighty beast that is Soundgarden to
take the stage. Around 9:30 Chris and the boys took the stage under a
blanket of near darkness hailed by an explosion of noise... I was at
the centre/right position of the stage - between Chris and Ben, Kim
was to Chris's right and Matt was pounding the skins at the back.

Just for you I tried to catch *EVERYTHING*, so for full details...
Chris was wearing black jeans, a black work-shirt and for the first
few songs a cool smart black leather jacket. Kim had a Tool T-Shirt on
and Matt had a Fuck You Crew T-Shirt. Ben had a green T-shirt (as far
as I can remember), leather trousers (Rock 'n Roll or what, eh?) and
a perpetual scowl. He did start to make a bird silhouette with his
hands at one point but a smile failed to break on his face during this
unlikely moment of tranquillity... Ben was playing Fender Jazz Basses
exclusively, Chris was playing Fender Telecasters and Kim switched
between his Black Guild S200, Black Gibson Les Paul Custom and I even
saw him with one of Chris's Telecasters. Chris and Kim I assume are
still playing through Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers and fuck knows what
Ben was playing through. All the cabs were Mesa 4x12's. Matt was
playing drums...

Phew...

Oh yeah - I could see the CC lookalike Caryn mentioned in the Showbox
gig review, he seemed to be Matts drum roadie...

One thing I'll mention right now - I tried for the life of me to
remember the set-list for you but to no avail - I was having to much
of a good time! I tried to get a set-list at the end but the bouncers
had none of it, they wouldn't get me one from the stage - Bastards! I
know what song's they played - just not the order...

They took the stage with 'Spoonman' which was fucking unbelievable and
totally unexpected and proceded to rip through two more pre-DOTU
tracks, namely 'Searching with My Good Eye Closed' and 'Let Me Drown'
before taking the first plunge into new waters with 'Ty Cobb' which
was easily as vicious as it is on record and I didn't expect this so
early in the set. Cool.

It's around now my memory begins to fail me when I try to remember the
set order. I mean, I'm not even sure if 'Ty Cobb' was after 'Let Me
Drown'... but I'll do my best...

Next up was another surprise - 'Head Down' from Superunknown... I must
say this has never been one of my favourite SG tracks but it had a
very cool vibe when played live. 'Burden In My Hand' and 'Pretty
Noose' which were fucking excellent live, especially PN. It was cool
standing pretty much right in front of Ben who plays some wicked
goddamn bass licks - the man's a fucking great player. The sound for
the first few songs were pretty good, but it cleared up and improved
by the time the DOTU tracks were aired and the sound was positively
fucking hot.

Well, from now on songs are in no fucking order - I just can't
remember the set order. Sorry, but at least I can remember all the
songs they *DID* play. All I could think about at the gig was "Dena's
gonna kill me if I can't remember the set-list..." Ah well, impending
death is on the way...

Chris mentioned the fact he loved playing in Glasgow, which seemed
fairly heart felt - I mean he wouldn't say he hated the place would
he... They seemed to be having a good time, the smiles were there
(except Ben... ) and the sweat was literally dripping from their
bodies - Shroom would've *LOVED* it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 'Mailman' was
crushing, the slab-like riffs punching their way through the mix -
this was one powerful fucking song... 'Never Named' was in there
somewhere which rocked... 'My Wave' was played... 'Blow Up The Outside
World' is still better than 'Burden In My Hand', even live... They
played the Doors 'Waiting For The Sun' which hopefully they'll record
sometime as it slays... Chris did a solo version of 'Black Hole Sun'
which was cool-as-fuck, he did about half of it before the rest of the
band rejoined him on stage for a 2-3 minute jam (which seemed to
include PN again!) before performing a mellow 'Boot Camp' which really
does work well live. Like the Showbox show it included some fucking
cool intro/outro jamming and anyone seeing SG live is going to love
it... 'Rusty Cage' and 'Drawing Flies' from BMF were both aired and
for me were two highlights of the show. 'Drawing Flies' simply rocked
like a bastard and the fucked up timing in the riff of the bridge of
'Rusty Cage' is as jaw-droppingly heavy as ever. Shame Chris doesn't
leap around to it like he used to (a la 'Motorvision') but I guess
he's getting too old... ;) 'Rhinosaur' was the last of the DOTU songs,
which was cool enough but something like 'An Unkind' would've been
better... 'Fell On Black Days' is the last song I can remember they
played - - I can't remember if it closed the set or not - but was
included in the main set somewhere... Man, I'd kill for a set-list so
I could know where the fuck I am here...

I can't remember the main set closer - It could've been 'Rusty Cage',
maybe 'Fell On Black Days' - I just can't remember... Fuck!!!! I tried
to go out of my way to remember but to no avail... maybe Stephen
remembers...

They came back on and opened up the encores with what I can only
presume was the Captain Beefheart song they aired at the Showbox a
couple of months ago... I didn't recognise it that's for sure and it
wasn't an SG number... Hope someone else can help with this! I can't
actually remember how many encores they played - I know they did at
least two - I just can't remember whether 'Rusty Cage' was an encore
or not... I don't think so, but... Well two encores isn't a hell of a
lot but after the sheer quality of the main set I wasn't too
bothered... But the big shock of the night was the final song, for me
this was *THE* fucking moment of the whole gig... by this time I'd
been at the barrier for about twenty minutes so I'd been at the front
for the whole gig and I was pretty fucked by then... but when the
opening salvo of *'FULL ON KEVIN'S MOM'!!!!* assaulted my eardrums all
hell broke loose! Revitalised energy came from nowhere and I was
screaming at the top of my lungs! I mean, this is one of my all time
SG faves and I was praying for some earlier SG stuff, 'Hunted Down',
'Little Joe' or anything from 'UltraMegaOK'. This was the earliest
they got and by fuck it was magic!

"We were three, Kev's mom made four... we don't come round any more"

I thought there would be more but to my disappointment, no. No 'Jesus
Christ Pose' to end the night on a real high - but what the fuck, the
set was awsome and my first SG concert was something worth
remembering. The vibe was great, the crowd was friendly - even the
bouncers were pretty cool and were always handing out water to us
dehydrated moshers. The only downer was some dick in front of me at
the barrier who seemed to have a big thing about crowd surfers and as
they went over the barrier the little fucker would take a swing at
them from behind so the bouncers wouldn't see... I mean - what does he
expect? - it's part and parcel of a gig and no one else seemed to have
a problem (apart from some tosser who seemed to think he could take a
grope at any passing female surfer... ) I mean - did he expect a a
Maria fucking Carey gig or something..?

The guys in the band were fucking brilliant - they showed none of the
boredom, sloth or general unhappiness that was reputable on much of
the Superunknown tour - - Chris in particular seemed to be having a
ball and Matt still managed to impress the fuck out me - not only is
he an amazing drummer but man does he attack that kit or what -
fucking amazing! Kim riffed away at stage right and Ben just looked
plain cool - and even managed to keep himself under control after some
dick threw a pint of beer at him (which also covered me and Stephen
too... ) Overall they played tight as fuck, seemed to have a laugh and
certainly kept me entertained...

I trudged off home, happy as fuck and probably a few pounds lighter -
most of which was retained in my sopping wet T-Shirt and Trousers -
thankful for the current warm weather which allowed me to strip off
the T-Shirt for my walk home, bought the Burden singles from Tower
Records on my way to the flat and had a long, long shower before
falling into an easy sleep thinking 'Fuck - after six years I've
finally seen Soundgarden - and it was as fucking amazing as I thought
it would be... "

I've only heard one song by tenderloin, and it was on the twisted
willie compilation. they play pretty well, kind of country-metal (think
yee-hawing with a double bass drum and you'll get the idea). the cool
connection between the bands, tenuous as it may be, is in the liner to the
compilation. the band's photo has one of the guys in a hater tshirt. so
maybe kim or ben saw the picture and invited the band to come along?

just a couple of quick notes - yesterday, after flipping through
the singles section in a record store here that doesn't normally hold any
treasures, I stumbled across a promotional copy of fell on black days.
that was cool in itself, but it was also priced at the kingly sum of
$4.99. the guy on the counter recoiled when he saw the sticker, but my
wallet was faster than his price gun. what makes the find so much cooler
is that up the street, some shyster wants $20 for it :) also, the store
(the record exchange) has two copies of the second part of the pn single.
so if any brisbane listers who want the box set and poster (and you know
who you are!), run down and look in the glass counter.

lastly, it seems that wiseness truly does follow age.
congratulations to the spelling bitch for managing to dodge classes and
sleep while designing a great birthday page for ben, the likes of which
have not been seen since...well, since chris' birthday. happy birthday to
ben, and may he always have a metallica fan to spit on.

course he must be a good hummer . . . but whistling . . .
