Well, as usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short. I'm a "Digest"
girl, so I didn't find out about Seth's birthday until today. So -
Seth...HAPPY BIRTHDAY]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] You do such a tremendous
service for all of us pour souls out here. You should win an award
   or something]

As for Chris looking a little thin lately, I remember when I saw
them back in 94 Chris was a little thin then. But when I saw them
this year at Lolla, he looked REALLY thin - and I was far away.
Anyway, I came into these awesome photos from that show, (which
one of these days - SOON - I'm sending to Seth) and he looks
absolutely GAUNT. Just terrible. He's still as gorgeous as ever
   though. Wonder what's up.....nerves perhaps?

Also - kind of non-SG related: Did anyone else hear about Pearl
Jam doing either Letterman or the Tonight Show (can't remember
which) on September 20th, if I remember correctly. Apparently
the show has to air without commercials because.... - well duh.
Anyway, is this some kind of hoax or is it for real? Anyone?

Well, must to go. Must get SOME work done today. Again, Seth -

I have a question. In the last issue of Rockabilia, under
domestic rock music videos, there's a new SG video "Alive
From the Superunknown". This is in addition to Louder Than
Live and Motorvision. It's not a bootleg, as there is a separate
section for those. I called to get more info, but they really
didn't give me any useful information. Apparently it's new, it's
an official release, and it's on backorder. It is NOT the CD-Rom,
it's a VHS video. It goes for $24.98. Does anyone know anything
   about this?????

For those of you out there who have their Chicago tickets, or know what
I'm talking about, I have a question.

I just got my ticket for the Nov. 10 show today (Yaaaay!!!). It says
the section is GA (which I thought the whole venue was GA) but it also
shows a row and seat number. Does that mean anything at all??

So, I'm happy! I have my ticket in hand, possibly a flight for $86
cheaper than my first inquiry AND hubby has given his approval (you
read right Candy and Jamie, I WILL be there)!. Yeah right, like I
needed his approval anyway, but hey, it's a whole lot easier going
without a small war on my hands!! I'm also looking for a ticket to the
Saturday night show as well, if anyone knows anything. AND I'm looking
forward to meeting all the Chicago area sommsters and the others who
are coming in from all points east and west!!

I was out yesterday and was surprised this morning to find out about
the Utah and New York shows. Does anyone have a clue as to the method
being used to schedule and announce these US dates? Anyone asked the
fan club? It seems a little strange to me, but what do I know?

<< cheap airfare, a ticket for sunday. all i need is one for SATURDAY and

since some people are obviously WAY too uptight lately, let me clarify
this statement PUBLICLY.

i was ***jokingly*** referring to NON-SOMMS friends of chicago residents
who have bought tickets. this was after an email from someone who said
that s/he is still waiting to see if his/her friend(s) (in fact, i think
they themselves MIGHT have used the word 'lame'). they were referring to
LOCAL, REAL-LIFE, NON-SOMMS friends, people they hang out with and
probably said 'yeah, sure get me a ticket', but then didn't have the money
to give them...

this was NOT NOT NOT NOT a comment on ANYONE on this list, a diss on
ANYONE'S friends, rl, irc, somms, non-somms, i don't know what.

this is really making me regret buying a ticket. gang, if you have a
problem with what i said, write and ask me. i may be loud and obnoxious,
but i'm not the royal bitch from hell on wheels. stop assuming that.

and the worst thing was, this came from people who know me and i THOUGHT
were friends. i guess not.

Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I have tons of SG articles from 1989
onwards that aren't on Seth's page, so when I get the hang of this thing I
will send them all to Seth. It's not always easy to get US mags here apart

very grateful. Get Seth to put them on the articles page so everyone can

Anwway, to address some concerns about Kim being a devil worshipper:
My bandmates and I kid about the devil a lot.
We're not devil worshippers however.
Some examples:

Date's Father: Do you worship the devil in your band?
Dave (guitarist): No, Satan told me never to talk about him in my songs.

Dave (answering phone): Hello?
Dan (bassist): This is Satan. I need your soul.

Dave (talking to woman): No, our mom's Satan.
Woman: No, she's not!
Dave: Dan, is mommy the devil?
Dan: Uh-huh

Gregg: I think this college should accept me because I'm the spawn of
	the devil. End of story.

Anyway, I'm a God fearing kinda guy, and Dan and Dave aren't into
Devil-worshippers either. We just like to kid about it to kinda shock
people. Besides, it's not like he's gonna come up here and
claim my soul for his....

Hey All-
First off, happy belated Seth, ahh....the ability to purchase
alcohol is such a liberating experience :)

I haven't written in a while cause I don't have any thoughts about
SG that I haven't already shared, until today. I was listening
to 'Down on the Upside'-has anyone gradually grown into this
album like me? Anyway, I used to think Chris could have
written better lyrics to 'Blow up the Outside World', then
as usual, with a couple good brews, I began to picture the song
in other levels. Like..

What if Johnny Cash were to sing this song? It seems tailor made
for Cash to sing. Just that bible belt on acid voice. The lyrics
don't need to be more complex 'cause Cornell sings them like
they're supposed to be sung. It sound weird, but too few times we
have artists that do that. Dylan is a brilliant songwriter, but a
singer? Cornell has that balance I think. Not comparing the both,
too long to do that, just an observation.

My thoughts
Peace
Sean

PS-Grote, we must have brews again! So it is written ....

i go to all the trouble of callign my mother, telling her to get me two
tickets for sg's NYC show, cause i have NO money now and it's right
around my birthday anyway, so happy birthday right? and i tell my dad
about it. i'm gonna be 18 4 days before the show, so i can legally
drive down there and everything (new york has the dumbest driving law
ever invented.. if you are under 18 years of age and have your license
you can't drive past 9pm.) ok, and i have a car. great, i have a car,
i wont get arrested for driving that late, let's get in the goddam car
and go. but nooo.. "no, you can't go to the show." "why not?"
"because you can't." REALLY good fucking reasoning, right? "what if i
get a ride?" "no." "why not?" "because you can't." at this point,
i'm ready to kill. "what if i get a ride?" "as long as i know em." oh
thats just fucking wonderful, isnt it? it just about covers the goddam
waterfront. now, if i had any friends who are soundgarden fans, i could
get down there no sweat. but the only other person i know from around
here who listens to them is all of 15 years old. and he's not even
really a big fan. my options are to tell the parental units to fuck off
and go anyway, and bring all my possessions with me because i can just
forget about coming back, or i can beg my 15 year old friends' mother to
drive us down there (i'm buying his ticket so i can have someone to go
see em with, why not?) you sommsters who don't have assholes for
parents have no clue how lucky you are. i'd love to have my freedom
even if it meant paying the goddam bills. money is a small price to pay
for sanity.
it really pisses me off that there's no one i can turn to on this one,
and even when i could do the whole goddam thing myself, i can't, why
not? "because you can't." oh ya, really fucking swell, eh?

Okay, seems to me like lots of people in scattered towns across the US
will be able to see Soundgarden soon... Whne are they comming to (or close
to) Canada?? We're big Soundgarden lovers too!!! I supposed it would kinda
be pushing it to ask if they could also come to towns that are NOT the size
of Toronto, Vancouver, Montr=E9al....Hey, here's an idea how about=
 Sudbury???
anyhow, I'm off track, if anybody hears anything about them comming
somewhere in or near Ontario, could you let me know?

No, you dont understand :> See, SOMMS is short for

and over and over and back, but we dont wanna type out

Sorry for my earlier rant, but I'm sure you've all felt the same way
when your parental units tell you you can't go to the Soundgarden show
just "because you can't." *blush* Anyway, the reason I write is
because, if I do end up going to this shindig, (Roseland, is that the
name of ti? Close enough) How big is this place, I'm curious. And
there is a kinda good chance that I can get the ride down there because
that friend of mine's mom, she's REALLY nice. So I'm hoping, anyway.
But do tell. And sorry again.

him sing Slaves and Bulldozers live and match the original recording,
especially the "Bleed you Heart out" bit?>>

I have heard him sing Slaves & Bulldozers many times, live and on tape, and
he nails it EVERY TIME. Whenever he gets to that part, I get extremely
anxious, thinking "oh
God, his voice is going to crack", and it never does. But I know what you
guys are
talking about, his "live" voice is just not as great as his recorded voice.
But I feel it's due to a few things, #1 being when you have to sing like
that, night after night, that puts a LOT of strain on your vocal cords. With
Superunknown, he realized (with a little help from Michael Beinhorn), that he
didn't have to "scream and wail", like you guys said, to sound good. But
live, he still has to cover songs from BMF - and Chris never holds back - to
his own detriment.

Another thing that is not good on his vocal cords - which has already been
brought up on the list a few times - is his smoking. Sad but true. (<---I'm
hearing Metallica). Anyway, I used to sing in my younger days, and I was
good, until I started smoking and I shot my voice to shit. Oh sure, I can
still carry a tune, and I sing better than Courtney Love (I like Hole BTW),
but I can not SING sing, and I quit smoking a while ago. And Chris is a
SINGER, not a rock star like an Axl or a Trent (which I also like). Which is
to say, he could be like a Tony Bennett or a Harry Connick Jr, if those
styles were to his liking. Am I making sense here??? (yes - I hear a
resounding "NNNOOO!!!"). I mean, he's an extremely talented VOCALIST (yes,
in addition to amazing songwriting abilities), and he should take care of his
voice.....which I don't feel he does. (You know, smoking cigars and drinking
red meat is simply NOT ENOUGH).

really lost that much popularity?>>>

First of all, I have to say YOU LUCKY ASS!!! You're getting to see them, and
I'm not.
As for the "small" arena, well, that's good for YOU. I don't think their
supposed waning popularity has much to do with it though. When I saw them in
94, at the height of their Superunknown popularity, they played their only
show in South Florida at a 4,000 seat theatre. It was sold out too. Don't
know what happened with that one, because at that time I think they said they
were playing minimum 6,000 seats. Anyway, it was the MOST awesome show. I
was right in the front row and it was reserved seating. Security was
EXTREMELY tight, with any moshers or body surfers getting their asses
promptly kicked out. I was right in front of Ben the whole time, and he
didn't spit on me once! In fact, no matter what anyone says about Ben, I
will always think he is just beautiful, because you know what he did? Well,
they opened with JCP, and as always he had his bass hanging really low, and
the stage was only about four feet high, so he hangs his bass over the side
of the stage, right in front of me and 2 people next to me, and LET'S US
PLAY!!! Is that amazing? We were strumming on Ben's bass!!! My proudest
moment. He must have let us play it for about 20 seconds, Ben just holding
it there. It was TOO COOL. So I can officially say that I played Jesus
Christ Pose live with Soundgarden. (Don't you want my autograph now?!) All
my husband has to say about it (he was there) is "very good honey, I'm happy
for you". My little sister says "that's very nice Ang". ARGH! They can't
even work up a LITTLE excitement. But that's OK, cuz I have YOU guys now,
<sniff>, friends, who care about me and will put up with all my Soundgarden
bullshit, (and who are probably all saying "shut the fuck up already").
 <sniff>

<sigh>

One last thing and then I WILL shut up. Black Hole Sun came on the radio
today, and for the first time I noticed that the guitar intro sounds almost
like the intro to Nirvana's Heart Shaped Box. Has anyone else ever noticed
that?

You people have suffered enough. I'll go now.

Well...in most aspects I'll probably also have to go with the original, but
there are some things I do like better about the video version:
1 - Guitarwork . . mostly . . .
2 - The pause after the guitar solo. It's a longer pause than on the
original, and I really like it that way better . . . gives you a second to
catch your breath after another one of Kim Thayil's mighty guitar solos . .
. and the way he goes back into the chorus from that pause . . . especially
with the video, I like that camera shot that goes with it . . .
 . . . ok . . . so "some"=2 . . . oh well . . .

I'd say he's quite a good guitarist for singing and everything also . . . I
mean, songs like BIMH, he's given full credit on for both Music and Words .
. . and I think that songs got some pretty darned nifty guitaring in it . .
. so I think Chris could live on guitar playing alone . . . as a rythym
guitarist, of course, but nonetheless . . .

spontaneous thought:
Does anybody know for Ben's songs if he also writes the guitar? Or does he
just write the bass and words and the actual guitarists throw the guitars
in? Because I think some of Ben's songs have some of SG's best guitar riffs
. . . for example Head Down . . . Somewhere . .. An Unkind . . . etc.

G'nite folks . . .
