now this is more like it. when I saw the burden clip for the first
time, I also thought of ufo's. I don't know how many of you are x-files
fans, but the odd tower/silo thing looked just like something they used in
one of last season's episodes. about the weird (pew) jet that flies over
the band, I don't know. maybe kim tool a new angle on the songs's lyrics
and was trying to work aliens into it.

also, can anyone tell me what the "orange marmalade set" is? ben
makes reference to it during the interview on the pn single, and I'm
wondering whether it is his own little term. he talks about how he
includes my wave, the day I tried to live, head down, pretty noose and she
likes surprises. I personally can't see much of a connection between most
of these songs, and the rest of the band sniggers when he says it, so
maybe it was just (to quote kim) tongue-in-buttcheek.

and by the way seth, have a nice day. it is your 21st birthday

In Sydney he was good but the PA blew twice plus it was too way too Loud
which meant you couldn't decipher the lyrics, it was all noise, but that is not his fault.

Actually he does Beyond th Wheel better then the original althought i agree
that Jesus Christ Pose would be very hard to sing.

Agreed, infact that's one of the reasons newer Soundgarden sounds so much betterIMHO Chris' vocals have more control and he doesn;t just wail.

This was one of the songs that live as a bside sounds pretty bad to me. It
really detracts from the song.

Yes that is a good point and i did consider the fact that he is playing guitar
now. BTW how good is Chris as a guitarist, could he play in a good band on
the strength of his guitar playing alone?

Stop raising these good points dammit:) Okay i agree his style is very different
much more laid back and "bluesy". He is great live thought (I can vouch for
that).

and as for maynard, he is a different story.

He hasn't got as big a range as chris but is better live then on record. No
easy feat.

You lucky bastard. I have to wait till October 1st (Hope that is the release
date in Autsralia as well). Tool better tour Australia this time on their
own tour.
Okay i guess Chris could do an okay job on record which would make it easy
for him to reproduce it live but instead he chooses to be incredible on record
but only very good - excellent live. I can live with that. Has anyone heard
him sing Slaves and Bulldozers live and match the original recording,
especially the "Bleed you Heart out" bit?

Okay, this is not SG related, but since it concerns member of the list I
feel justified in posting this.

East Coast members, is every one OKAY..

For you that don't understand, the East Coast of the United States has
being hit with bad weather for the last few weeks. We are having bad
flooding. I live in the higher areas of VA, but this morning the water on
the roadways was half way up the wheels of my Jeep (a very high Jeep).
Roads I have never seen flooded in the many years that I have been here are
closed.

I know we have members who live in areas recently hit by Hurricane Fran
(Dee Dee you still doing okay). I consider the members of this list my
friends and I worry about them.

I have been sitting here for the past 1/2 hour or so, reading all of
these tasty tidbits about SG, thinkin', "Alright, there's actually people
out there that are as crazy/obsessed about this band as I am. Maybe, I'm not
just a fruitcake." Well, maybe I didn't get that excited, but right at the
point where I was feelin' pretty good, this girl in the next little cubicle
leans over and goes, "Oh cool, isn't SG that new Black Hole Sun band?" I
could've cried. Was this an isolated incident, or does this happen a lot to

Subject: My padre disses on Chris, and my Matt dream...

Well, my padre gave me the ultimate insult this morning. I was babbling
to him about my trip to Seattle in October because (did I mention this yet?)
I got my airline tickets in yesterday. ;-) He listened patiently to me for
about 10 minutes, and then he asked me "Shroom, pumpkin... why do you want to
go all the way to Seattle just because that Soundgarden band is there?" So
then I start in on how I'm not JUST going to Seattle because SG is there...
I'm going to meet my friends, and basically just get away from TX for a week.
Ok, and SG being there is just a little extra incentive. =) Padre just sat
there, sipping his coffee and said "Sweetie, I don't know what you see in
that Cornball guy. He looks like death eatin' a soda cracker." WHAT?!?
Jeeeeeez... do you people see what I'm having to put up with here? Living
at home is bad enough... but to have my parents insult MY beloved Chris
;-)... well, that's just too much. Heheheh...

Oh yeah... I wanted to tell y'all about this dream I had the other
night. Dena and I were at a SG show, and we were sitting onstage beside
Matt's drum kit on this couch. Picture the Motorvision setup, except Matt's
hair was longer (like in TDITTL poster). Dena and I had the same perspective
that the camera gave of Matt (his left side). Anyway... we were just kicking
back, watching Mattster fly on his drums... and I kept thinking to myself
"Damn, it must be fun to be a drummer!" Then all of the sudden, I was Matt!!
It was so cool! I was just whaling on these drums, and I knew I was him,
because I could see my (Matt's) blonde hair flying around my face. I was
doing all the requisite Matt-drumming-stuff, like throwing my head back and
making all kinds of faces. I could see Chris over my drum kit, and the crowd
past him. I thought to myself "Yeah!! It IS fun to be a drummer!!" Then I
glanced to my left, and I saw myself and Dena sitting on the couch, watching
me. That's when I messed up, and lost my right drumstick. I just lost my
grip on it, and it flew out of my hands. Oops. I knew I couldn't play the
drums (I'm not coordinated enough), so I should have figured something like
that would happen. I thought to myself "Hmmm... maybe being a drummer isn't
all it's cracked up to be." Suddenly I was back in my body, sitting on the
couch again. Matt was himself again, too. He was like "What the fuck?
Where's my drumstick?!?" One of his tech's brought him another one, and
they went on with the song. Heheheh... it was a really vivid and cool dream,
I can't even begin to tell you guys. And it was neat, because Dena was there
(my partner in crime). I'll bet you people weren't aware that I'm the ONLY
person on the list that knows what she looks like. =) I'll also bet that a
bunch of you people don't care. =) Anyway... I just thought I'd share all
that stuff with you. Oh, did I mention that I only got three hours of sleep
last night? =) Okokok... I'm going now. Love me, bye-bye...

Subject: Chicago shows and backlash

Hi fellow SG devotees,

I'm trying to make plans for my "Soundgarden Weekend" in Chicago and was
wondering if anyone could tell me where the Aragon is. I have the address,
(and my tix came in the mail the other day) <jumping for joy>, but I can't
find Lawrence street on any of my little maps. What area of town is it in,
major attractions, landmarks, anything that will help me get my bearing
<sp?> so that I can get a hotel close by. Or, better yet, when bands come to
town, is there a certain hotel they typically stay at? I know here in Indy
there are usually 2 or 3 places where celebs stay. I have relatives in
Chicago but they don't know where the Aragon is either. Please help!!

Also, has anybody seen the most recent issue of SPIN? I think it just came
out yesterday, but there are a couple of pretty negative letters about SG.
(The authors obviously have no taste in music.) Anyway I kind of have mixed
feelings about it. I hate for people to say bad things about bands I love
but, on the flipside, if there is like this backlash forming against them,
then maybe the "true" fans, who really "get it" can have them back for
ourselves. Personally, I hate it when bands get really popular and all
these little "trendies" jump on the bandwagon. It makes it harder to get
tickets and it usually makes the band withdraw more and you end up not
feeling the same connection with them. And these are also the same people,
in a lot of cases who now go to shows and throw stuff at bands. PEOPLE LIKE
THAT SUCK! This is what happened with U2 whom i used to love as much as I do
Soundgarden but it's like they became popular and their music started to
suck and they just became "STARS". I mean I know its good for the bands
personally to have tons of people who buy their music and come to their
shows but ...

Also, there is a cute, eventhough not very clear or large pic of Chris in
the mag with an article about Rock the Vote. Its from when he had - yes yes
yes - long hair!

My opinion What do you guys think?

Subject: Soundgarden Live!

Just thought Id drop the list a quick note. It was announced last night
that Soundgarden is returning to their home away from home--Salt Lake City
(utah), on Nov. 6th. No opening band has been announced. Now here is where
it gets weird. Theyre playing in a very small "arena". Saltaire only holds
around 3,000. Last time they played in this area they played in front of
over 8,000 (Ogden, golden spike arena). I cant figure this out--have they
really lost that much popularity? I thought for sure theyd hit the Delta
Center, which holds up to 10,000. I mean a couple of weeks ago the
Smashing pumpkins played the delta center, and nearly sold the damn thing
out (interestingly enough, the pumpkins sold more tickets than Kiss).
Anyway, can anyone shed some light on this--is this a "back to the
bars tour"? O.k. so every cloud has a silver lining--right? When medium to
large bands do play Saltaire, sometimes they sell out so quickly that a
second show is immediately added. This has recently happened with Primus,
White Zombie, and Rage vs. the Machine. Im salvating at the possibility of
two Soundgarden shows in a row! Anyone else who wants to see Soundgarden in
a smaller arena might get their wish this tour.

thats my favourite part of the video. the jet crowns the whole desert
"atmosphere" thing. its just the guys walking on a desert but theres this
strange feeling to it all. the sand being carried away with the wind through
the whole video looks strange, then theres the jet and this little house
where they all get in. and the part thats shot from inside this "house"
showing them approaching is weird too, like someone's watching them from inside.

ive been wondering how they got the jet on the video. they probably added it
to the scene after it was finished with digital effects or something but i
would like to think they just heard it coming and decided to shoot something
with the thing on to see how it came out. its not likely that they actually
asked the US Air Force (or anyone) for a plane, right?.

I think this is my favourite Soundgarden video.

nos vemos.

Announced this morning on The Howard Stern Show ...
SOUNDGARDEN !!!
Friday November 15th and Saturday November 16th
at Roseland (West 52nd St) (212) 245-5761 or (212) 249-8870
Tix on sale FRIDAY Sept 13th (cool) at 10AM at the Roseland Box Office
and all TicketBastard locations. I called Roseland and they said, at
this time, no pre-sale bracelets (paper nooses) are being given out.
Max purchase of 8 tix total per person. I'm getting 4 for each night.
Tix only $18!! Peanuts compared to the $85 a pop for KISS. Roseland
is an old ballroom and a great venue for intimacy (Bowie plays there
in a few days), but as with most venues in NYC (Exception: Irving
Plaza), cripples like me will have to fend for ourselves in the giant
pit (festival no-seating, ya know). I didn't ask for this, and I'm

my sister is this huge hootie and the blowfish fan. they are coming to
town, and she has no one to go with her. i said i would if she couldn't
find anyone. i also said she could come to see soundgarden with me when
they go on tour. she actually seemed interested! my little hootie and the
blowfish fan sister at a soundgarden concert!? i think i'd be too worried
about her welfare the whole time to actually enjoy the concert. i hope she
doesn't hold me to it! and i really have no interest in seeing hootie and
the blowfish, but she would never go alone and she is so excited.
oh well this was pointless. if only SG would tour w/hootie! wasn't that an
"idea" thrown into conversation a while ago? ha ha!

>Theyre playing in a very small "arena". I cant figure this out-->have they really lost that much popularity? Anyway, can anyone shed some light on this--is this a "back to the bars tour"?

May I quote CC on this one?? Referring to the '94 tour.....

"The biggest problem on our last American tour is we did it just the
way you're expected to do it when you start selling more records.
Hopefully, next time we'll do it more the way we want and figure out
ways of making it more exciting for us and the audience."

They are expected to do as the Pumpkins did.. maybe this is finally
the way THEY want to do it. I happen to think it is awesome and hope
they do tons of small to mid-size venues. I don't think it has
anything to do with their popularity, just that they went thru a tour
that did not make them happy, and they want to do it differently this
time, not the expected way.

what do other listers think? is the video version of fell on black
days better than the original? I'd have to go with the original. as cool
as it is to hear the band play the song in (I think) just one take, I'm
not sure that the reworked lyric melody really suits the song.

I couldn't say, because I don't know enough about guitar playing.
what I do know is that by his own admission chris doesn't think he could
entertain people musically with just a guitar, but that he would also have
to sing. I personally like the way he plays <shrug>.

a friend of mine received information from bmg australia that
although the release date of aenima in the u.s is the first of october, it
probably won't be released here until the 7th :(

about the very tenuous link between soundgarden and the x-files I
made yesterday, last night's rerun made me think about it a little more.
the episode was about three vampires and their bloody exploits. anyhow,
there is this young woman who wants to become a vampire. her name is
kristen. in talking with agent mulder, she reveals that she was in an
abusive relationship ("my father showed his love for me by hitting me") as
a little girl, and is now in an abusive relationship with her vampire
boyfriend.

does this ring a bell with anyone else?

excellent point, josh. his acoustic version of like suicide is
great. I also totally forgot about his guitar work on seaasons, which to
me is fantastic. is the guitar part overdubbed on that song, or is it
possible to play all those lines at the same time? if he is doing it all
at once, then he can certainly play in my band anytime.

well when they play live, most of the guitar sound is coming from Kim's
guitar. chris wouldn't reallly need to play but a lot of their songs have more
then one guitar part, so its needed. but chris is in no way any less of a
guitar player then he appears.
and about just him and a guitar maybe, just one song im recalling, is the
accoustic version of 'like suicide', if i remember its basically just chris
and his guitar mixed to make the song.....

Hello everyone,

Yes, it's been a while since the Thug has posted. Anyways, I have to agree
with Eliza on the fact that the band doesn't necessarily enjoy playing to
huge crowds. In a smaller venue the show, the energy, the crowd, and the band
are much more focused. And they just did a large venue tour. So they are
doing what they want to do. Does anyone remember Lollapalooza, and the band's
reactions to the scene there? If they wanted to do arena shows, then they
would. And if you don't like that, well, tough shit. It's their call, not
yours.
