From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

it looks like our work is to be featured on the radio in cleveland.
107.9 fm - wenz - is supposedly going to be talking about the
unofficial soundgarden homepage during an episode of their website
show. the show is going to be recorded this wednesday night (9/11),
but i don't know when it's going to air.

i've never heard a show about websites on the radio, but i'm only
telling you what they told me.

if any cleveland sommsters want to call the station and try to find
out exactly when the show is airing, that would be cool. and if anyone
could tape it, that would be even cooler...

rage (the australian music television program) didn't do anything
for the release of down on the upside mandy, so you didn't miss anything.
rage did, however, have a "soundgarden special" when the band toured back
in 1994. but it was a little different to how things normally run.

usually, the given musician or band will program the three or so
hours of the music they want to see and hear (layne of aic played four
prince songs. eek!). the clips are interspersed with the musician/band
talking about why they chose the song. then at the end they play all the
clips by the particular band. anyway, someone decided that when it was
chris' turn to program the show, instead of having him talk about whatever
he played (I wish I would have kept the list) they had him talk about his
views on soundgarden's videos and music videos in general. imho, it
turned out to be a much better choice. seth's superior webpage has a
transcript, if you missed it.

speaking of the pearl jam retrospective, they played something
that was out of the ordinary - a promo sort of thing which had the band
playing spin the black circle, lukin and something else in the same vein.
if any listers know what I am talking about and can give me more
information, please mail me privately. it was live and had jack irons on
drums.

However, when I saw them live, he must have been on because it was
great. Also, Do you think, when they are in the studio, that they lay

Just wanted to let everyone know that the SG website might be down
temporarily at the end of the week, so if you try to access it and
it's not there or half the links don't work, fear not, it will return.

Stargate Industries (sgi.net) is changing their server hardware again
(from a Silicon Graphics Indigo2 to dual Silicon Graphics Challenge S
servers and redundant disk vaults (and they finally got their T3 up
and running, too)), and last time they did it I didn't sleep for 3
days because they left half the site on the old server ("Oh, we didn't
realize you had subdirectories"). Anyway, with any luck the transition
will go smoothly and the server should be faster than before.

But then again, they did choose Friday the 13th as the big day, so
we'll see what happens...

In response to Aleko's comments about Chris performing live..

I can agree with you on one front. The live rendition of "Pretty
Noose" has left me with kind of an "ehh.." reaction if you will. I
have seen it 3 times performed live now and I haven't been impressed
with a performance yet.

However, the remaining songs are always performed fairly well in my
opinion and are often times better. I really enjoy JCP live and I
think Chris' solo rendition of "Mind Riot" on the Superunknown tour
was fantastic. Check out some bootlegs with "good" quality and see for
yourself. Don't worry about getting flamed around here. Intelligent
comments and the courage to speak out is always appreciated by true

I'm not sure what a rhodes piano is (other than the obvious), but
if you listen to overfloater through the left speaker, you will hear the
(somewhat) piano version of said song. without kim's guitar, it sounds
fairly different. I think chris' vocals also come through a little
clearer.

I think there are a couple of reasons as to why chris' vocals may
not sound as good live as they do on record. I don't know if you have seen
them live, but I don't think boot recordings do him justice. he was
*great* here in brisbane (keep in mind that was a small club show, which
may suit his singing more than arena-type shows); I can't remember any
part where he didn't match the vocals from any song, and they did play
songs from all their albums.

having said that, I think it would be difficult for chris to
reproduce (note-perfect) on stage what he does in the studio. let's face
it, even *he* would find it hard to re-record his vocals note for note on
older songs like beyond the wheel and jesus christ pose. not that he is
some sort of flash in the pan, but those performances were pretty special.
live, they would be even more difficult. I think age (band and individual
musical evolution, not his grey hair) may have something to do with it.
soundgarden are beginning to get together a pretty large catalogue of
material, and up until dotu (and selected tracks on superunk), chris'
singing has been mainly in the stratosphere, lots of wailing, screaming
and general shaking of foundations/buildings. but since recording head
down, applebite and blow up the outside world, I think chris has begun to
vary his singing style more. on earlier records like ultramega and bmf, I
would wager that there weren't more than three types of microphone used
for recording.

but on applebite we hear him moaning, on blow up we hear
watery-lennon type verses and on kyle petty we get super-distorted vocal
hammerings. is chris getting bored with singing the house down all the
time? take fell on black days, for example. the album version was great.
but when they re-recorded it for release, the vocals were markedly
different. I know this would have been a conscious effort, but whether it
was because of his throat problems at the time (which may also have had a
huge impact upon how he now sings both live and in the studio) or because
he just wanted to shed some sort of new light on the song I don't know.
but in the end, this revised melody is how he now sings the song.

lastly, I think because chris is playing more guitar at gigs may
have something to do with his vocal "problems". correct me if I'm wrong,
but just about the only older song which called for two live guitar parts
was rusty cage. I would guess that now over half of the material the band
plays needs chris to play guitar. was this the case at the lolla
performances? anyhow, playing guitar, no matter how simple the part,
would have to in some way take away from his vocals.

> I have seen local bands with great vocalists that do it live (Naiad, >
Powderfinger) and for an example you would know how about the singer from
> Tool Maynard. His live performances are sometimes better then the album
> recordings and he hits every note spot on. Also past vocalists like
Robert

with reference to powderfinger, I think their lead singer's style
is a lot more subdued than chris' singing. as good as he sounds, fanning
is no banshee (sorry carolyn) and as for maynard, he is a different story.
to me, maynard has two singing voices - full flight and melodic whispering
- - and he doesn't do much in between. this is completely dissimilar to
chris, who to me has a lot more gears and can do more with his voice.

speaking of tool, I am currently listening to a show they did last
new year's. five of the songs they performed are from their soon to be
released record aenima (oct 1). the tape is probably third or fourth
generation, so the sound is a little patchy. but have no fear tool-fans,
the new record should sound wonderful. the first single - stinkfist -
sounds great, and is already getting airplay in the states, so set your
tapes :)

Want to talk neighbors pegging you as the kook on the block. I live on the

has been several times when I would look out and see a group of neighbors
standing out side my windows, mouths hanging open, eyes glazed.. They
just don't understand that SG is the "FORCE"... Okay anyone else out there

Oh, wait one other strange place I listen to SG tunes is when I'm in the

Hey ya,

RAGE is an Australian program that screens on Friday and Saturday
nights down here. From about 12am till 8am or so. No commercials just videos
:) They do special events ie they did a night where all they played was
Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Nirvana.
They also have guessed VJ's from touring bands to come in and play favourite
videos. And because it is non-commercial it plays everything and anything :)
It's the only place we in Aust get any decent videos other then top 40 crap.

Well that should answer some questions :)

i agree -- hence caryn's rule #8:

"lead singers should NOT play guitar (unless it's a three piece)"

to qualify that, i mean lead singers wehre vocals are a particular
strength. obviously, neil young has to sing. but i think people like
roger daltrey, mick jagger or eddie vedder -- it's superflous, and
detracts from their concentration.

actually, sg was one of the few bands that i thought transcended that
rule, because chris' guitar work was so clearly essential to the sound
(unlike those listed above, where it's just showing off imo).

i strongly disagree. i can't figured out why chris looks like he does,
red, almost bloodshot looking eyes, sullen, tight skin on his face,
way scrawnier that i remember seeing him last. does anyone have any
explanations? i mean, i know he's been hitting the bottle more often,
but can that do that to someone? i'm 17, so i've not yet experienced
the joys of seeing really drunken people or alcoholics. so i'm really
worried about chris, cause i care for him and the band and i'd hate
to see anything happen... i dunno, so sue me, but i got scared when i
saw this picture. anyone else have it and agree?

um, hi, this is Mind Riot, i have two addys, but if you reply to this
PLEASE DON'T REPLY TO THIS ID. for some reason, my juno account doesn't
pick mail up, but it sends it. oh well. okay, well, this is something i
wrote today at school in study hall. just a little something to express
what soundgarden and the lyrics chris (kim and ben sometimes too) writes
mean to me and make me feel.
it's called Screaming Life.

Piercing pools of azure sky
	haunting with their solemn stare
   feelings and images thrust forth
	  deep into imaginations last reaches.

Once a flowing, swirling mane of black
with its twists and turns and tangled tresses
   tendrils now reduced and straightened
standing on end in halo-like fashion.

Close your eyes and open your mind
the eagle's shriek cries out in anguish
switching to a slow, seductive croon that penetrates
a driving force to break even stone hearts.

Angry words of pain and darkness
each emotion wrapped in a perfect scheme
speaking for one who he has never met
"Remember everything is just black or burning sun."

OH MY GOD!!!!!!! You are not the only person who thinks Kirk Hammett is
one fine looking man, don't ask me why he describes himself as ugly and
smelly! I posted a whole dissertation as to why I love him on a bulletin
board on Aol! Ok, so this isn't a Metallica page, so i'll shut up. But I
HAD to respond to that!!! however if you do wanna talk further just reply
to me!

funny to be painful!! Doesn't Chris just make everything better??

I'd have to agree. I think I'll also add that the adrenaline flowing
through Chris' body on stage is most likely a hell of a lot more than
that which flows in the studio. The raucous energy produced by playing
live might suppress what we'll call "vocal precision." That's what I
think, at least. Not that I can sing. . .

it was me... i thought it was great because it was like 'hey ma, look! i'm
with fuckin' JOEY RAMONE!', with his arm around him, taken at the aftershow
party.
