Oh yeah, I was gonna mention that long list of rules and how I thought it
was really cool. Actually, they weren't really rules. I was half asleep
when I ordered the tickets, but apparantly the concert is billed as
"Soundgarden: no crowd surfing or moshing" or something like that.
Probably not that restrictive. But before the sale was finalized, the
agent read this 20 second spiel that was like a terms of agreement deal.
I had to agree before she asked for my credit card #. It was talking
about how violence and throwing stuff wouldn't be tolerated. I had never
heard this type of thing before. But, I was pleased after my shitty lolla
experience. I wonder if the band had that put on there, or if it's a
venue thing.

Related: I went to Smashing Pumpkins on Sun. night. They put on a very
good show. Billy managed not to be an asshole and was actually funny and
likable. D'Arcy asked the pit crowd to be kind to each other, which I
supported. Some assholes still thought it would be cool to crowd surf, at
which point I was glad I was not in the pit.

Anyway, I'm hoping that these aragon shows will completely blow away my
lolla experience.

Hey everyone.
I'm happy to say I got tix for both nights at the Aragon in Chicago. Did
anyone run into problems getting tickets?
Also, I finally got my pictures from Lolla developed. There are exactly
two of soundgarden. Boy are they good. Ben and Chris are at least half a
centimeter tall and you can tell that Chris is wearing a black, if not
grey shirt. Oh well, teach me to take pictures _before_ I get frustrated
and leave the second row. Or bring a telephoto lens.
Looking forward to Nov. 9 + 10.
I am not familiar with the area around the Aragon. Everyone who's going,
we should get together (as others have proposed). How 'bout a restaurant
or bar (a combination would be good, I guess for we minors ;)) in the area?

Caryn, why did you think you'd get flamed for your reply to the foolish
escapades just to get closer to Chris Cornell? I for one agree with
you absolutely, 100%! There are other ways to not only get closer but
to actually meet bands, and not one has to do w/ lower oneself to a
foolish sex kitten fluff brain. That sort of thing, when I see it at
any show and/or backstage, just makes me A) laugh b/c they look so
pathetic and B) angry b/c it gives everyone a bad name. Hey, ladies
out there, if this chick w/ the pink skirt had gotten raped as a
result, what would the response be then??? I've learned, in 12 years
of music and meeting bands and doing interviews that if you present
yourself as a real person, perfectly normal, you get respect, the band
respects you and by the gods, sometimes even more doors open for you.
And esp. in 1996 when US women are crying so much about equality and so
on, why put on such a display? So, there you have it, Caryn, I guess
we've both not only stood up for women, but opened up a can of worms
and may get flamed for it. And to Jessica, who pulled that stunt--was
ti really worth it? Are you really proud of yourself? Chris is a guy,
a normal person!

That's the soapbox for today....ciao....deb

ps--caryn, I'd love to hear from you!

Hello everyone! I JUST began subscribing to this list last week, and THIS is
how I found out about the shows! I just got 2 tickets to the Nov. 10 show,
and am SO happy. I've been a long-time fan, but I've NEVER seen SG in
concert before...

...been reading some of these messages, and thought I'd include my little
anecdote...

A few years ago, a friend and I were really into Stevie Ray Vaughan, and at
the time we were in school in Madison, WI. When we'd heard about his
upcoming concert in Milwaukee, we had agreed that we wanted to go, but we
both had too much to do at the time, we had no money, etc, etc, so we both
agreed to "catch him next time he comes around."

The morning after his performance at Alpine Valley in Milwaukee (August of
1990?), I woke up to my radio alarm, and the announcement that SRV's
helicopter went down, and he was GONE.

NEVER AGAIN will I NOT go see a band I like!

Someone mentioned how a SG equipment faq or page would be really
cool, and I agree heartily. It would have to be a really good
listing though, because other pages and various guitar mags usually
are brief and incomplete. I talked about gear in my review of the
Rockingham Lollapalooza (i figured, if people can talk about their
clothes, I can talk about their guitars). Seth, you should put
something on your page to this effect. Here is a recap of what I
could tell about their live gear: Kim had six guitars, four Guild
S-100's, a Les Paul Custom Lite, and a Fender (Telecaster I think).
His onstage cabinets were Mesa/Boogie 4x12's (2 straight, 2 slant),
the "Rectifier" style, and his amps were Boogie dual rectifiers
(offstage). I know he uses Ernie Ball .009's or .010's, Dunlop
crybaby wah, and an unknown chorus pedal ("for feedback modulation").
Chris had five or six Fender Telecasters that all looked brand-
spankin' new. He had two slant Mesa cabinets, one on either side of
the drums. His strings are usually .010-.046, but for certain
tunings he uses .010-.052. While I could not see his amps, I've read
that they are Boogie dual rectifiers. His Gretches and Gibsons were
nowhere to be seen... Ben had six basses, including custom Fenders
(I don't know what kind, but they had maple fretboards and a p/j
pickup combination, along with a Tele-style headstock) for standard
and drop-D tunings, and an Ernie Ball Music Man for C-tunings. He
also had the Mosrite bass (used on SNL). His cabinet was a
Mesa/Boogie 2x15 road ready, and his amp was also Mesa/Boogie.
All three guys were wireless, but it's hard to tell what kind they
used. Matt played a set of Ayotte Custom Drums comprised of two rack
and a floor tom, a 24" kick, and a 14" snare. Cymbals, according to
the Zildjian home page, are 15" hi hats (K top, A bottom), 19", 18",
& 20" Z custom crashes, and a 21" A rock ride. Sticks are Vic Firth
5B's, heads are Remo, hardware is DW.

May you eat lots of cake and Hot Rod Death Toll House Cookies! =)
Hehaheae... Kimbo rules. Don't get any frosting in yer beerd.

But anyway, today has been a good day. I have a little Soundgarden
anecdote =) It's kinda amusing =) Well, my car, the Subaru, is lacking
shocks. =) Well, it has shocks, but they're air shocks, and I kinda
popped one, so my car rides like a mechanical bull, now. (This is why I
asked if there were any Subaru owners on the list. I CAN'T be the only
Subaru owner out of 500 people.) Thank God today I found someone who
can put new shocks on my car.. regular shocks, as opposed to $1000 for
two new air shocks... hehe, Foreshocks.. Anyway, driving to school and
back, my little AIR SUSPENSION light comes on and blinks the whole way
there and back. It's truly a pain in the ass. So today, on the way
home, Soundgarden was blaring out of the three speakers that work in my
car, and I just got sick of that AIR SUSPENSION light, and it's located
on the dash, so I'm humped over the steering wheel, holding my hand over
that AIR SUSPENSION light so I don't have to look at it blink and blink
and blink, and my face is pressed up against the windshield and I'm
screaming along to "Bleed Together" cause it's like a rule when I'm in
the car I have to sing along. It must have looked damn funny to
oncoming cars =) I suggest you try it sometime.. Just hunch over the
steering wheel and put your face up to the windshield and sing. You'll
feel like an asshole in no time... =) Well, I'm going to go cook now.
I'm gonna make a Kim Thayil Birthday Cake, it's going to be shaped like
a gigantic beard.. Hehehee.. I love beards! I love Kim! If he came to
my house I'd let him use my toilet! My Jazz in America teacher also
bears a striking resemblance to Kimbo... the same eyes.. my teachers got

Subject: Feeling Supersonic...

Hey List!

somewhere at the end there's some sg content :)

Last weekend I made the annual pilgrimage to Barrie/Toronto to see the
annual alterna-festival. This year's winners were Neil
Young/Oasis/Screaming Trees/Jewel/Gin Blossoms/Spiritualized. Past
years festivals have included '93 Neil Young/SG/PJ and '94 SG/NIN with a
whole host of smaller bands.

quick review:

Screaming Trees ROCKED! Go out and see them!!! I was in the front row
5 ft from Gary Conner, who seemed to be doing an Angus Young impression
:) The addition of the extra guitarist from Kyuss made the band sound
extra extra tight! A definite highlight of my entire concert
experiences! It's too bad the alterna youth that surrounded me didn't
know any of the songs! These guys should be much much bigger (conner
brother jokes not appreciated!). Go out and buy the new album NOW! :)

Spiritualized: I headed for beer tent south...no review...well, the
Molson Canadian had a wonderful bouquet.
Gin Blossom: Beer tent north...same as above...

Note: to anyone from the Northeast (non-new england), Midwest and
West...I nominate the Canadian accent as the accent of the year...It's
pretty neat to hear!

Jewel: She's so cute! Incredible voice...though the yodel shtick was a
little too 'cutesy'. The new songs she performed with her, ahem,
*band*...were forgettable Melissa Ethridge retreads...that will probably
help sell a couple million copies of her new album due in January.
Anyone else here the joni mitchel'istic (sp) tendencies in her solo
acoustic numbers?

Oasis: between my screams of "fuck you liam...we want noel", I really
liked them. The band is excellent live. If you can get past their
attitude and their Beatles stealing...they really are a decent band.

Neil Young: Great...Crazy Horse is outstanding...but I'm getting sick
of hearing "cortez the killer" and other 70's burnout classics in
concert. Two highlights...the kid next to me crowd surfing during
"Heart of Gold" and "Sugar Mountain" (I thought the people surfing to
Orleans "Still the One" at Woodstock II was bad)...and what happens when
you don't eat all day and stand 10ft from the stage in the middle of
50,000 people for 3 hours during Oasis and Neil Young. Hint: beer and
heat = dehydration and eventually....

addicted to noise did a concert review in sunday's music news of the
world if anyone is actually interested in what I'm saying :)

SG content: (wouldnt want to break the first SOMMS commandment)

t-shirt report:

I saw 4-5 SG shirts at the show (I'm not sure about the exact
number...cause by the end...everyone looked alike). ALL were the Black
Hole Sun Indian dude shirts. No new or old designs :(

Non musical highlight and the source of the SG content in this post....I
finally played Big Dumb Sex (remix) at maximum volume in the parking
lot! (this is the first show I've had it on CD) I'm gonna assume that
most Canadians have never heard the remixed version 'cause the looks on
the people's faces were priceless! :) It was a mixture of shock and
amusement...most just stared! :) I recommend everyone play the song
very loud at every concert! Highly amusing!

Next up for the GBASOCOS, Pearl Jam 10/1 or Satchel 9/18 (if they show)

It's me again, Monnica.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes - - I've found my home.

Yeh, Toni I did see them in '94 in Dayton. It was pretty cool except I went
with a friend who was new the whole "alt rock" thing. (She was formerly a
big Madonna fan). They actually played a couple of older songs, Gun and I
don't remember the other one. It was funny, when they played Gun, I
remember my friend turning to me really puzzled and half disgusted and
asking "What's that?" ;>) Oh well.

Oh yeh, to Caryn and anyone else who might be interested; some of the rules
were no body surfing, no moshing, no throwing things (which I personally
agree with), stay in your seats (I think I was given this direction about 3
times), and then there were some others that I didn't really catch because I
kinda tuned her out. Plus I have no intention of doing anything that might
get me thrown out. In fact, those of us who are going should see if maybe
there is a way to get backstage to meet them. Maybe we can e-mail the fan
club or something. Let 'em know there are quite few devotees coming. Who
knows, maybe it'll work. What do you think? :>)

Well, that's it for now.

See ya

"The moon is glued to a picture of Heaven and all the little pigs have =
God"=20

Stella's post about the pigs question got me thinking. Firstly, I am a =
Christian but don't want to get into religion on this list. These =
thoughts I've had are a little less religion-dominated than that.=20

Because when I hear Chris sing the above line I get an image of pigs =
flying in the sky! Why??

Do you know the phrase "and pigs might fly"?? or even "pigs might fly =
backwards"? Used when you think something will never happen - so that =
if that something ever DOES happen pigs will actually fly........

I wonder if Chris is referring to something perhaps not happening - or =
that the impossible HAS actually happened - that now pigs ARE flying =
around near that moon and Heaven.

Just because the word god is in the lyric, doesn't necessarily mean he =
is attacking any religion.......

Just some of my crazed thoughts!

Cheers,

Screw that, forget about that - I don't wanna think about anything like =

Subject: hmm, hair...chris....calendar...chris...

just some things to say-

i really dig chris with the long hair. ummm. but... i think he looked
really cute with it shaved short (i usually find that attractive), and i
totally LOVE his hair now. i don't know what i like most. i think the
long hair was more appropriate when he was 28 then it would be at 32 (not
to offend anyone in their 30's) but i couldn't picture him with long hair
now. it seems like he used to dress more like a long haired guy than he
does now, and people's style/hair changes so i think his hair is fitting
somehow for his dress, music, personality, etc...

and for anyone who might have the calendar (or anyone who might get
it...shroom...) just look at october (my birthday month, how appropriate!)
oh, gosh, that is the most gorgeous picture, be still my beating
(exploding) heart...even though it's sept. 1996 right now i have oct. 1997
hanging on my wall to drool over for a year until it actually has to be
there. and check out the other 11 pictures too...nice...
i think it's kind of sad though that there are only two pictures of the
whole band and it's called a soundgarden calendar. you know, i don't mind
10 of chris, but the band isn't just HIM, it's all of them. i think i'd be
insulted if i was kim, ben, matt.

and about chris having the angel/devil qualities... i have two t-shirts i
have made with him on them. one of them is a big picture of him on the
front (like the one on seth's pege that is matt and just chris's eyes, i
think it's on the images page, not sure, but it's from a promo picture i
think) anyways, he has long hair and no shirt on. well my shirt is only his
face and hair, but when i where it i always get asked if it's a picture of
jesus...(i still have the print of it if anyone want's one, i'd be happy to
make another, it's an awesome shirt.. oh amanda, you are such a great
artist! just kidding).
but i have this other shirt that i painted his face on the back (he's got
short hair, it's from a rolling stone article in '94 i think) and people
tell me it looks like the devil. crazy, same face, totally different
impressions people get. :)
well that's it for now. oh wait, no it's not. about being sleazy to get
close to a band...i think it's sick (no offense jessica, i'm not talking
about you) and i would never do that. when i saw them in 1994 (another
story about the best day of my life!) i was 14 and small and stuff and i
was having a fit cuz i couldn't see so this guy lifted me up (above
everyone, perfect view for about a minute) and when he put me down he said
something along the lines of, "i can't believe you didn't flash them with
that kind of opportunity!" and i was so insulted, like he thought i was
there to give soundgarden some show and not because i love their music..
and i wasn't even obsessed with chris back then (wow, times have
changed...) so that thought never even crossed my mind!! not that it would
now either. i want to be respected as a fan, not a stupid little girl who
needs attention from some famous people or the male fans or bodyguards or
whatever.
o.k...that's enough big mouth, i mean big mind or something nevermind.
sorry. school drains my last rational sensible understandable thought out
of my mind.
peace... amanda

I was originally going to reply to this thread sooner, but I
waited until you gave your own reply to caryn, jessica. this is coming
from a male perspective (so you can make your own judgment as to whether
it is valid or not), but to me, losing your dignity to whatever small
degree just to get closer to the stage is not worth it.

I know that chris' physical appearance is a big - if not the
biggest - drawcard to some female listers, and that is entirely up to
individual preference. I personally feel that the band is made up of
*four* people, not "sexy chris" and three other musicians (but that is my
own personal soapbox). accordingly, I might actually have more respect
(albeit not much more) for your efforts if you were trying to see the
*whole band*, and not just the lead singer.

but in the end, you used your skirt to get a closer view of chris.
was it really worth it? to sit next to a bunch of what were probably
drunk, leering and creepy guys, just so you could see things better? how
could you even concentrate on the show?

lastly, and I don't know if this means much to you, but have you
thought of what the band would think of what you did? I don't think chris
would have been clapping you along. some bands are happy to play on the
looks of band members, somtimes in preference to the music they actually
play. I'm happy to say that soundgarden is not one of those bands.

i'm trying my damndest not to sound like an asshole here... but umm.. we
talk about LOTS of things on this list.. since "black hole sun" is
soundgardens most known song, we don't really talk about it =) we've

Subject: Just so we're crystal clear...
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

...about how this list works, let me go over it again. New people,
please listen up.

 I. RULES THAT ARE NOT OPEN TO DISCUSSION

  1) If you are consistently off-topic, you will be removed from the
list. Being off-topic means sending messages to the list that have
nothing to do with Soundgarden. An example: If you're comparing
Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, you're on-topic. If you're posting a review
  of Pearl Jam's new album, you're off-topic.

  2) If you send chain mail to the list, you will be removed. I mean
*any* chain mail, no matter how important you think it is. If you get
a forwarded message that says little Johnny is dying of cancer and
wants to start an email campaign to raise his morale, DO NOT forward
it to the list. If you get something that you think is so crucial that
the list should see it, send it to me *privately* first, and I will
let you know whether or not it's appropriate for the list.

  3) If you wish to unsubscribe, send mail to SAPERL@MIT.EDU. Sending
mail to the list will get you nowhere fast. There are more than 560
subscribers and only one of them - ME - can remove you from the
list. Don't waste everyone else's time.

II. RULES THAT ARE OPEN TO DISCUSSION

There are no rules that are open to discussion. :)

 III. GUIDELINES

If you're new to the list, take the time to read the archive on the
Web page and familiarize yourself with the current threads and find
out what's been discussed recently. Don't jump in and make a fool of
  yourself.

Don't jump into an argument and personally attack someone before you
know who you're attacking. This list has been active for more than a
year, and in that time those of us who have been around for a while
have learned to interpret messages based on their authors. That is, if
you joined the list yesterday and someone today posts something so
utterly outrageous that you want to flame them into oblivion, DON'T.
There are people on the list who will say things that will shock
newbies, but keep in mind that the rest of us might see those
"shocking" messages as totally normal, depending on who sent
them. There are tons of inside jokes -- feel free to ask the author of
a message what he or she meant, but don't pull out your flamethrower
  right away.

And by the way, those guidelines should apply to *any* mailing list
you join.

10-4,
seth (listadmin)
