Alright, PJ's opening night is in seattle in the key arena. He we
go...since E. Vedder is the most whiney (besides Michael Jordon) depressed
person. He is gping to leave is um karma in the Key Arena so if the sonics
don't make it all the way it is his fault. See on the other hand if SG were
to preform there it would just have the opposite effect.

To begin w/remember me breaking some guys nose over music. Well I got in
yet another fight w/him. Verbal this time. He was trying to tell me
Nirvana was the first biggest band out of seattle. I said that was
bullshit, sg was the first to sign a major label contract. He tried to
convince me that that doesn't matter. Then I told him that SG was nominated
for a grammy before Nirvana became big (in my area that is). It goes on and
on about how he is telling me that lyricly Nirvana means more to the average
person. Bullshit yet again. I didn't hit him THIS time. I just left the
room. But if this should happen in the future, I may have to get physical
again. That all for now. Ivy

I agree. playing the same songs show after show *would* get very
tiresome very quickly. music that was once personal and dynamic would
become bland and worn-out. after repeated performances on the road, songs
that are about intimate feelings or private emotions (mind riot?) would
lose meaning. who would want to do this to their own music? it would
certainly be easier to play pretty noose for the tenth time than it would
be to play rusty cage for the 100th time.

> person, i a different space, were not as talented or proficient as you are

two points here. firstly, soundgarden have always been a more
immeadiate and fresh band than other contemporary acts. their shows have
generally been about playing their new material. any boot from around the
time of louder than love has barely any songs from any other album. kind
of the same goes for bmf and superunk era shows. chris has stated that he
prefers to record in capsules, where the music is all new and not stuff
that has been floating around for years. that doesn't explain tighter and
tighter, but that is probably the exception.

from a fan's perspective, however, it is an entirely different
story (at least it is from mine). when I see a band live, I like to see
them having fun. if that means that they only play the fifteen they
actually like the most, then that is cool. but surely each individual
listener is able to dream about their own set list, caryn? and I would
figure that most listers would be able to think up some fantastic lists.
in my mind there wouldn't be anything wrong with older songs popping up
now and then, nor would I be upset if they came out and played stuff like
limo wreck or holy water, songs which don't get out much.

in that regard, I was lucky to see them here for their first
australian tour in 1994. it was about two or three weeks before the
release of superunknown. since they hadn't yet played in my town, they
felt obliged to play stuff from *every* album, from hunted down and
incessant mace to spoonman and fell on black days. it was a dream come
true :)

I would expect that on their upcoming club tour more old material
will be played. this is where they would expect their more parochial and
knowledgable audiences, and could therefore play more "obscure" songs
(songs that aren't off dotu or that rhyme with black hole sun). maybe
they will fire up the spinal taps and give us big bottom?

Um... just coming out of lurkerdum to give my opinion on this
"SG should play older songs" thing. I've never seen SG in concert,
coz they never come to Ireland (They did once but I hadn't started
listening to them back then...). I was hoping to hell that they'd come
on the European tour but it seems, that they are not. But if they did
come, I'd love to see songs like Outshined, JCP, Beyond the
Wheel, Flower, Hands all Over, Slaves and Bulldozers.... (and on...
and on... and on...) performed. I can understand why they don't
play older songs over where you guys are or whatever... coz they
play a lot over there. But in countries where they rarely play I think
it'd be nice to hear old songs as well as new. I understand that
this isn't taking the band themselves into consideration and that
maybe they ARE tired of playing old materiel... but this letter is
written from my point of view.... or something.

Even on the cd itself? Not the carboard sleeve but the cd. Mine say's Birth
Control on the cd and Birth Ritual on the Sleeve. I don't know maybe it was

oooh...good idea, jamie. i like... :)

and why stop there? heck, if there was ever a crop of musicians worthy
of doing an sg tribute cd (while they're still an active band,
even...now THAT'S innovative!!! :) ), it's the musical folks on this
list. COPYRIGHTS BE DAMNED!!!!

i may have to gather up my loyal bandmates and polish up my dulcimer/
mandolin arrangement of "head down." i got dibs on that song if any of
these ideas fly, so HANDS OFF MY HEAD DOWN!!! (so to speak...although
you're more than welcome to put your hands all over my eastern
border... :) )

actually, i'll probably have to record any sg covers myself, except
for the drums...my drummer loves sg but my bassist/multi-talented
instrument bandmate is a power-pop lemonheads-type freak...ewwww... ;-)
he is good, though, so i guess i'll keep him around...he knows that he
likes (and writes) cheesy music, so he steps back and lets me pen our
masterpieces...

i would love to see the web page idea come to fruition...we could
compile tapes of somms bands covering sg songs, make them web
accessible and possibly produce some compilation tapes to send out to
somms members. i vote that nothingman handles the production and
distribution....OUCH!!! OOOF! <me ducks flying tomatoes and shoes>

i'd like to hear a lot of DIFFERENT versions of sg tunes...reworking
the style and structure, etc. (example...we were jamming on this
cheesy lounge-type be-bop medley last week and i started crooning the
lyrics to "outshined" over the top of the din...my drummer fell off of
his stool laughing...it was a riot...i wish the four-track would have
been recording it all...)

(picture grote in a brilliant white leisure suit [if you can stomach
it] in a smoky lounge...stand-up bass and baby grand piano making sweet
music in the background) "HEY! Won't you show me that power, child...y'know
I'd just like to say...sweet baby, don't you know that i'm kneelin'--HUH!--
right down on my knees today..."

BUT SERIOUSLY...this whole idea could be damn cool if enough people are
interested...

Heheheh... I hit up Moon for info on tattoos, 'cuz I was thinking about
one, also. I don't want the BMF wheel, though. I was thinking of the "S"
from Ultramega OK (Dena's the one who came up with the idea for it). Maybe
on the back of my neck? I know, I know... what's the point of getting a
tattoo that will be hidden by my hair all the time? Well, I've never gotten
a tattoo before, so I figure if I don't like it... I can pretty much just
forget about, y'know? The only thing that bothers me about it is that I
showed the design to my brother... and he thought at first glance that it was
a Nazi sign. I'm not too comfortable with the idea of having something that
resembles that horrid emblem on my body. Can anyone give me some advice
here? Did the "S" ever strike you as anything other than a S?

Too late, Christy!!! About three years ago I was thinking about having
Chris tattood on the inside of my right thigh. AAUUGGHH!!! I had even found
a place that could do it, and my credit card was ready. Lucky for me, my
best friend Margie smacked some sense into me just before I had it done.
Heheheh... she actually smacked me, too. She was like "Shroom, what in the
hell are you thinking? If you do this, yeah it'll be cool for maybe a month
or two... but you're going to be stuck with it for the rest of your life!!"
I could almost see the spirit of my mother taking over her body, heheheh.
"If you do this, you're gonna regret it!! NOW PUT THE CREDIT CARD AWAY!" I
told her that I was going to do it, and that was that. Then Margie looked me
in the eye... well, actually she kinda looked down on me... she's 6'0", and
smacked me upside the head. That's when I realized that she was really
REALLY mad, and really serious. Margie's never done me wrong before, so I
agreed to take another week to think about it... and I ended up changing my
mind. THANK YOU, MARGIE!! I LOVE YOU!!! Heheheh... life is weird
sometimes, y'know? Gee, if you get that tattoo of Chris, Christy... do you
think that Seth will post a picture of it to the page? ;) Heheheh... maybe
not.

Arrogant? MOI??? You must be referring to my STATEMENT as "arrogant", as I
seem to recall you don't attack people personally. You could've fooled me
though!

When I said "the SG elite", that had nothing WHATSOEVER to do with us on this
list, or people with internet access. What I meant by the "SG elite" was
true SG fans who know that their music goes way beyond Black Hole Sun. Read
it again Caryn. I've been a huge fan for a long time, but only bought a
computer less than a year ago. Having internet access makes me no more and
no less of a fan than someone without a PC. For you to read something like
that into my statement was arrogant in and of itself.

Lest you read something into the above explanation, let me expand for you:
There are fans whose first exposure to SG was BHS, and I think that's great.
But these are people who've realized what an awesome talent this band is,
and have explored beyond (the) Superunknown - versus people who ONLY like
BHS, and consider themselves fans.

Capisce??? Obviously, I now feel I must explain myself.

You also wrote:

<<<two, why can't they? did you ever stop to consider that they're TIRED of

Sure. And if that's your reasoning, imagine how tired they must be of BMF by
now.

<<<why aren't sg like the cure? with all due respect, how can you compare

who haven't had ANYTHING to contribute in *years*? of COURSE the cure has
to play their old 'hits' -- that's the only way they can attract an audience
to come see them! who wants to hear their new material???? who cares about
it? it's not worth listening to, let alone buying!>>>

Well, I guess it's safe to assume you don't like The Cure?!! Not all of the
older songs they played were "hits". And that was my point dear heart. I
work at a local venue (4000 seats) and I can't tell you the number of
has-beens that come through rehashing all of their old hits. But that's
their business, and that's what they love to do, and people seem to eat it
up. The Cure have hardly reached that status yet. Although I don't
particularly like their new album, some people DO, and they played over half
of it live Friday night. In fact, the show consisted of very few "hits".

<<<contrast that to soundgarden, who are still a strong, vital musical
*collaboration*, not robert smith and a bunch of people who have nothing
better to do with their time but play music another band wrote a long time
ago. soundgarden have excellent NEW material that is every bit as vital and
interesting as their older material.>>>

No shit. I NEVER put down their new material. I love DOTU. Sure would be
nice if they played some of THAT live.

<<<if you're a band, what would you rather play: newer music which is more
interesting to you, because it's truer to the mental and musical space you
are in now, or older stuff written a long time ago when you were a different
person, i a different space, were not as talented or proficient as you are
now? have you ever stopped to consider that an audience's insistence that a
band that they go see must ALWAYS play every old song they want to hear is
extremely limiting to the band?>>>

Caryn - why do you feel you have to talk to me as if I were a child and you
are the voice of experience? Music is my life. I am 34 years old, and have
been to my fair share of concerts in the last twenty years. I know full well
what to expect and what not to expect. And I know FULL WELL that SG does not
play anything older than BMF, save for an occassional Hands All Over. I
don't expect them to come out and play every old song I want to hear. MY
POINT IS - it's as if the first three albums don't exist. Is ONE song off of
ANY of these albums too much to ask? I don't think so. And therein lies the
reason for my original post. I was just pondering the "why" of it all.
 That's it. That's all.

<<<back to soundgarden: i don't think you can judge them based on their
lolla
sets -- they tried to introduce rarer stuff at the beginning, but then they
got smart: the crowd coming to see them wanted to hear the material most
familiar to them. so they made the experience, already painful enough,
easier for themselves as a band by not trying to challenge the audience
unduly. and i say, good for them.>>>

Good for them - not so good for us. I did not judge them based on Lolla as I
realize they have only 60 minutes to cover songs they think people want to
hear. If I were to judge based on Lolla, then I would have to say how
extremely disappointed I was that they played nothing from DOTU. But I know
better.

<<<if there is older material that sg still feels they can play with the same
energy and enthusiasm as their newer material, i say go for it. otherwise,
why bother? i'mgoing to see pearl jam in two weeks and i hope to HELL i
don't hear 'jeremy' or 'black' or any of that 'ten' garbage. why? they are
NOT that band any more. so why should they continue to pretend to be?>>>

Don't EVEN get me started on Pearl Jam. I will say this though: I'm sick of
Jeremy, but I think Ten is an awesome album. And I have to disagree with
your statement above: Pearl Jam may not be that band any more, but Ten is a
part of them - of who they are. So according to your reasoning, a band
should live for the moment. If an album gets TOO popular, or the band gets
SO tired of playing it, then they should simply put it behind them? Pretend
it never existed? I just cannot agree with that. Then that would mean that
fans of Ten are useless pieces of shit, because that band does not exist
anymore?

I can see a band getting so sick of playing some songs over and over and over
again, that the magic is just not there anymore. But there are other songs
on Ten, just as there are so many other great songs in Soundgarden's
catalogue that have NOT been played to death. Those songs are a part of
those bands.

Caryn - why are you so angry all the time? Perhaps if you actually took the
time to READ my post you would understand what I was getting at.

Someone mentioned that SG played Flower recently, and I was thrilled to hear
that. I can only hope <sigh> that when SG comes to a town near me, that I'll
be that lucky. I'm thrilled whenever I get to see them live, but it would be
sheer bliss to be able to hear a song off of SL/FOPP or UOK.

That's it. That's all. I'M DONE!!!!!

I think we should umm keep a count of all the people that have the
misprinted Burden single... which would be me, Dena, and
greg@cbl.com.au.. if I got that wrong =), or if I left anyone out
(sorry, my memory really sucks), let me know.
Also, I dug up a menu for a fictitious fast food place (Vogt's Fast
Food) that my friend made for computer graphics class.. it's pretty
cool... on the menu are Chris Corndogs and Down On The "7-Up"side. And
someone else said something to me the other day, "Death Toll House
Cookies"..so I got a great idea.. Tomorrow I'm going to the supermarket
to buy Nestle's chocolate chips so I can make Hot Rod Death Toll House
Cookies! Now, how you even begin to make Hot Rod Death Toll House
Cookies is beyond me, maybe I'll throw some car parts in the cookie
dough, why not, my car is falling apart. Hehe.. Well, if i can really
make Hot Rod Death Toll House Cookies (i love that!), I'll post the
recipe (along with some Soundgarden-related gibberish, so you don't get
too pissed off at me... cause food isn't Soundgarden related.. but I'm
making it Soundgarden related.. but, Hell I don't know.)
Another thing, has anyone seen the previews for Feeling Minnesota? I
cry everytime I see that commercial... the amount of Soundgarden-related
things in the world today is just so TOUCHING... I wonder if it has our
beloved SG on the soundtrack.. It's worth checking out anyway, to me,
that is, just because of the title..
Um one more thing, and this is COMPLETELY soundgarden unrelated, btu I
feel I've come up with enough kinda-sg-related stuff in the post to
compensate... if there are any Subaru owners on the list, mail me (im
kinda desperate).

well, thanks for reading..

Hey ya,

What a day :) First off I get Garden of Souls bootleg! (THANKS!!) then after
d/l a game demo I read this:

A&M recording artists Soundgarden, Hammerbox, Paw,
Therapy?, Swervedriver & Monster Magnet soundtrack

What's this on, a game called Roadrash. The demo is out now but I figure the
soundtrack is on the CD when you buy the game. But hell I speed when
listening to Soundgarden it can only help in a game I guess.

Now i might go play the game to see if it is any good as it is :) one to
look out for I guess.

Ok....I know that we have all discussed the " hidden" sounds in SG's music
right.
Well I don't know if this one has been posted to the list or not.. but here
it goes.

"Touch Me"
From the beginning of the song, to the point were Stephanie Barber comes in
with " In the night "....roughly a whole 5 seconds into the song. Matt's
go'in at on the drums and his mouth.... he's CHOMPING and I mean CHOMPING on
his gum!!
Up until tonight I had never paid attention to it... but I had my head phones
on and you can really hear the gum smacking!!

That's it!! I know it was Earth shattering OR even mind blowing for that
matter!!
Over and Out!!

As far as I know, the Soundgarden songs that are on the Road Rash
soundtrack are "Rusty Cage," "Outshined," "Superunknown," and
"Kickstand." Would have been cooler if there were some previously
unreleased soundtrack-type stuff on there a la "Jerry Garcia's
Finger"...
