This request is likely totally unnecessary, but I must beg:
If anyone hears rumors of upcoming US west coast soundgarden dates,
please pass them on. I am most interested in the following cities:
Sacramento, Oakland, Mountain View, etc in CA.
Portland and Eugene in Oregon.
Seattle/Tacoma in WA.
Las Vegas and Reno in Nevada.
Thanks!

RE: interpreting lyrics
I enjoy reading other's interpretations of lyrics. I always carry on an
internal debate about the meaning of lyrics that I love, but for me the
point is not what the author meant when he or she (or Chris Cornell)
wrote them. What I really enjoy about interpreting lyrics is first
sussing out what is likely meant and then adding meanings of my own.

For example: Rhinosaur.
Toybox interprets the song in terms of conflict and besting enemies.
This is a valid interpretation because the song obviously holds that
meaning for toybox.

My personal criteria for art is that art, once created,
takes on a life of its own. People exposed to the art receive not only
the gift of experiencing the art, they also get to participate by
contributing to the art. When I listen to a soundgarden song, I always
connect ideas and emotions of my own to the ideas and emotions that I
imagine the band put there. That is why I love soundgarden so much. The
songs allow me to participate: I feel connected. Most of the time I feel
really alienated, so it's nice to connect to something.

When toybox interprets the lyrics to Rhinosaur, I get even more out of it.
I get to see what's in toybox's head too.

I'm going on about this because I'm sure that people are a bit shy about
interpreting the lyrics. I contend that there is no way to "get it wrong".
If you see it, it's there. At the very least, it's there in your head,
which is certainly somewhere, isn't it?

Ok, to finish off this too-long post, I'll tell you what I think
about when I listen to Rhinosaur:

#Standing with my enemies/Hung on my horns/With haste and reverie/Killing
#with charm......I play, I'm sick and tame/Drawing the hordes/I wait, and
#show the lame/The meaning of harm

The above lines seem to me to speak of a weariness with give and give of
the rock star profession. I imagine the enemies are music industry
people, and maybe the hordes are fans and the music industry people that
congest the backstage area. Maybe the lame are fans. I don't see this as
anti-fan at all, I just mean that everyone probably wants a peice of the
author, and it probably sucks dealing with it. One reason I think the
industry people would be enemies is because they try to exert artistic
control over all artists. If the band is a rhino, they are trying to tame it.

#The skulls beneath my feet/Like feathers in the sand/I graze among the
#graves/A feeling of peace

Picture a concert where you're on stage looking out at the pit. This might
look like skulls beneath your feet. If this metaphor holds, then the next
lines mean that you are getting a feeling of peace from looking out at
all the fans. (see, it's really not anti-fan).

I see the two sets of "only" lyrics as being accusatory; in other words,
look how contradictory (healthy/dirt, bending/break) and overbearing (swarm)
you people are.

This may not be what Chris Cornell was thinking when he was writing the
lyrics, but anyway...

later,
Vampyre Cat

I just wanted to say that I am 19 years old and I like Soundgarden.
Did that enrich everyone's life? Good.

Thanks to Toni Roark, I have agents in Chicago acquiring tickets to one
or both of Soundgarden's (soon to be sold out) shows at the Aragon
Ballroom. I hear that there will be a ban on metallica and fraternity
t-shirts. Metallica fans and frat guys are welcome, of course, but only
if they promise to get really drunk and mosh during "Switch Opens."

Actually its hard for all of us, no matter what age, which is why this
list is so great. Now I know other Soundgarden fans, even some in my
general vicinity, so I actually have people to go to the concert with
this time (my husband has gone in the past, but he's really not a

That's a pretty good interpretation, IMO, and sums up what I'd been
thinking, but couldn't put into words.

>But then you get to the chorus, where for the purpose of my lyric

My take on the chorus was that it was from a different point of view
than the verses. Said another way, the verses are spoken by the
"Rhinosaur", while the chorus is said by an observer, giving a new
way to look at the Rhinosaur's actions. The Rhinosaur sees itself as
a leader, a conqueror, and the observer sees it as a leech or destroyer.

Once again, my SG collection is amassing (or is that I'm assing?). Today
I acquired:

	"Flower" CD single.

"Pretty Noose, Part 2 of 2" CD single MIT(get it?) excerpts from Kaiser
Keller's Cellar Show.

In my previous posts I forgot that my collection also contained:

	"Hater" CD

	"Pigeonhed" CD

Who knows, I may find more in my shrine...

Oh yeah, I also picked up:

"A Small Circle of Friends" Germs Tribute CD

	"Sublime" SUBLIME CD

	"Backwater" MEAT PUPPETS CD single

"Independent Days Volumes 1 & 2" HAWKWIND CD (Long live LEMMY!!)

Oh yeah (x2), I finally caught on that my return address was incorrect
and have taken measures to correct this.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program...

A couple days ago I was at this skateboard expo. They had a couple of
booths set up for local skate shops, and there was this one booth that
was giving away free cassette samplers and posters. Much to my
surprise they had several SG posters promoting Upside and the best
part was they were free. I there was one that looked like the picture
from Into the Upside with the red background and said soundgarden
across the middle and had a picture of the cover of DotU in one
corner. There was also a banner type poster that had the covers of
LTL, BMF, Superunknown, and Alive in the Superunknown. It says "also
available by soundgarden" above the pictures. There were cardboard
pictures of the cover of DotU that were the size of a vinyl sleeve (at
first I thought they were giving away free copies of Upside vinyl and
grabbed five) and on the back it says Soundgarden Down on the Upside
featuring: Pretty Noose, Burden in my Hand, and Blow up the Outside
World. The last item I got was a very large poster of the DotU cover
that they had set up behind their booth. I asked them if I could have
it and the told me that when they left, if I came by they would give
it to me. I doubt that this has any importance in your life, but I
thought it was cool. If anyone on the list is from the Minnesota
(besides McCheese) they might know what I'm talking about. If you
went, mail me.

in Seattle proper, you can try:

Cellophane Square -- U District (on the ave) (u district)
Retrospect Records -- Denny and Olive (capitol hill)
Orpheum Records - E. Broadway & Roy (capitol hill)

if you have transportation out of town, write me and i can recommend
