I agree that SOMMS is a play on band's who hide behind the 'Satan'
realm in order to fill their own inadequacies...victims of the
white-trash satan syndrome. They are just as disgusting to me as the
Big Haired, glittery televangelists. Being one who is relatively well
educated in religious philosophy, I would like to exchange views with
Kim on this matter. Also, being one who believes in some sort of
higher power, I would like to know if and why that makes me a "pig".

Cornell expresses his beliefs through a powerful medium in music.
Although, I agree with some of his views and disagree with others, I
think it's important for everyone to educate themselves and develop
their own beliefs. Just because Cornell expresses certain beliefs
does'nt mean a SG fan should adopt them, but respect them for what
they are; the views of a talented lyricist, musician, and high school

Seth, are Soundgarden's old videos (JCP, Outshined, etc) going to be
available on your website soon? That would be a really neat addition
methinks. Can you tell us more about your plans regarding the video page
because I seem to remember you saying that there were going to be major

I have to say... I feel that if Chris himself saw the article....and
knew that the media was publisizing his mothers chosen career..(only
for the fact that it's HIS mom) he might not be too happy about it. I
think that it might embarrass him somewhat. It's already evident,
whenever he is asked about how he feels towards what his mother does
for a living....

Just my .02 cents...

Where have you heard that he's embarrassed about his mother's choice
of career? I didn't get that impression.

For one, little boy, you have completely overstepped your bounds. I believe
calling list members to arms is a job ONLY for the List Thug and the KTMS.
So, get off of our turf before you further yourself up the KTMS "Shit List".

And another thing, because someone is in a band or other publicly
recognizable career, that gives the public no right to harass them at home,
or during their personal time. And as a group, I think we'll all agree that
NO ONE will call them at home. And if someone takes the opportunity to do so,
I will make it my PERSONAL vendetta to see to it that they suffer and are no

There have been some...technical difficulties with the video capture
equipment. Without going into excessively boring detail, the software
I use insists on saving the video clips as AVIs with a proprietary
CODEC, and I can't figure out to convert them to something everyone
can see.

As soon as I can get the stuff working, and as soon as I finish the
construction in my new room, and as soon as I pull next month's Song
Of The Month page out of my ass in 4 days, and as soon as I do the Kim
Thayil birthday celebration stuff, I'll work on it.

From: SkyVista96@aol.com
Subject: parents

Hi everyone. My mom just got back from Paris and she brought me some cool
stuff. Instead of bringing me some lame T-shirt with Paris all over it, she
brought me some European versions of Superunknown and DOTU, which I could
never find where I live. Anyway, I know the obvious difference on
Superunknown, but does anyone know what makes the DOTU so special? On the
front it has a sticker that says Limited edition (it's in French, but that's
what it says). There's no apparent difference in the disc. The cover is
incredibly shiny, like it has some sort of stuff on it, it's not dull like
the U.S. one. The only other difference I can find is on the inside of the
cover, where it's black on my older one, it's white on the Euro one. She
also got me the BIMH single, which I couldn't find here. And ya' know the
best part? The company that she works for paid for all of it!

And for all you people out there with parents who just don't understand, I
thought I'd tell you just how cool my parents are (at least in the music
department). Besides the incredible stuff above, my dad actually likes SG.
He owned a copy of BMF before I did! And on Saturday I got stuck in a car
with him to Oklahoma (4 hours from where I live) and he actually let me take
control of the radio. I, of course, played SG all the way (both directions)
and I even saw him drumming out Matt's parts on the steering wheel on some of
the songs. And as if that weren't enough, he found out that I am trying to
learn how to play the guitar, and is now offering to help teach me some basic
stuff (he used to be in a band) and let me use his dad's acoustic guitar.
Considering his dad died in February and it has lots of sentimental value,
that's pretty damn incredible.

Well, I've had a pretty good last couple of days, so I just thought I'd share
some of it with ya'.

Amber

P.S. I'm pretty much completely computer illiterate, so could someone explain
to me why I can play AVI video clips on my computer, but not the MOV ones?

thank you caryn. for all those listers yapping about our heels for
an unofficial soundgarden faq (and I know there aren't many of you), I
will now make a super-official announcment. in fact, this one is the
absolute last one. if it doesn't come through this time, then I'm going to
give up and hide out in brazil for a while (I'll have to pick up coco on
my way through).

the faq, which should have been finished a *long* time ago, will
be up and running on seth's superior soundgarden site <practicing my
allieration, which may become the cornerstone of the faq> by the 4th of
october. I know that sounds a long way away, but some school work is
looking like it might take precedence (if my real priorities don't get in
the way). the first version will hopefully be up on the 26th or 27th of
september, but there are likely to be a couple of little bugs that need
ironing for the 4th unveiling proper, a date chosen for you-know-who's
birthday celebration and the coinciding birthday page.

with that in mind, could listers (if you don't mind giving me a
kick in the ass to get me moving faster) please send me any questions that
you feel *must* be up considered on the faq. I, and my silent partner,
already have a list worked up, but input would be appreciated.

also of import are the new developments at the imusic soundgarden
site. in an effort to catch up to that other soundgarden homepage, the
designers appear to be on the verge of dumping their current design,
evidenced by the flashing "coming soon: the new soungarden website"
banner. and as I type this, I have received mail from the official list
about the new soundgarden mini-mart (I wonder who came up with that one?).
the shirt on display is kind of cool, as long as you like caricatures.
they also have a new hat, with the newly-resuscitated sst-era logo on the
front. hang on, weren't we talking about caricature shirts only a week or
so ago? looks like someone might be listening...

well, i purchased the hat they have on the web site at the 7/31
lollapalooza, so as much as we'd like to think we have an influence on
them, i'm not so sure.

i wish i could see what the 'band descriptions' on the back were like,
though...

and is it me, or did that web page bear a curious resemblance to an
unofficial sg site we all know and love?

Subject: Re: Slaves, Bulldozers and Production Quality

I thought I would finally put in my .02 about a couple things from a
few old threads.

1. Slaves and Bulldozers: This is still one of my favorite songs on
BMF (My knees still get weak every time Chris screams "Bleed your
heart out). To me though the song is about the PR/Marketing aspect of
the recording industry, especially perhaps the print media. "Every
word I said is what I mean" could be about being misquoted and/or
misinterpretted. "Buying lies and stealing jokes and laughing every
time I choke" could be about interviews/reviews, too. The "laughing
every time I choke" part could also refer to bands SG was competing
with when they first started out. "Virgin eyes and dirty looks on what
I have and why I took" sounds like feeling judged. "Counting all the
hands I shook" is obviously a statement about selling themselves
(PR-wise). And I think my favorite part "So bleed your heart out,
there's no more rides for free. Bleed your heart out, I said, what's
in it for me" also sounds like being tired of marketing themselves, or
paying their dues, whatever. Tired of having to do things they don't
want to do in order to "make it". Even the title says that to me:
feeling like "Slaves" to the situation, and being "Bulldozed" by the
critics/media/industry. Ah-hem, on to #2.

2. Production quality of DOTU vs. SU. Personally I don't know how the
quality of these two recordings can really be compared because they
are so different from each other in terms of "feel". On the Launch
CD-ROM Kim talks about this:

               LAUNCH:
In terms of the new record, Down On The
Upside, what was the overall approach? Did
you have a specific sound you were going for?

               KIM:
The biggest change was that we wanted to make
a record that sounded a little more natural.
The previous record might have been a little
too slick for some people's taste. We liked
the previous record; we've enjoyed every
record we've ever made. We just wanted to
make this a little more natural-sounding and
that really starts with the drums and that's
the foundation for the whole recording.

I'd be curious to see how many people on the list who became SG fans
BEFORE SuperUnknown prefer DOTU and how many who became fans AFTER
SuperUnknown prefer SU. Anyone who wants to email me privately and
tell me when they discovered SG and which of these two albums they
prefer, do so and I'll compile the results. Personally I prefer DOTU,
and I became a fan with Louder Than Love, but the sound on BMF is the
sound I'll always associate with SG because thats when I first saw
them live (over, and over, and over). Let me know what you all think.

By the way, for those of you who have Launch, have you checked out the
Web stuff? They have the full transcript of the interview shown on the
disc, which goes into a lot more detail. Boy, she does ramble on
(sorry, its been a few days since I got a digest and I was jonesing).
Guess thats all for now.

LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!

you gotta check out the caricature. Imagine SG as a Saturday Morning
cartoon of choice for all the crack houses in the world! The pictures
would look good in some sort of Fritz the Cat movie motif. And BEN!!!!
take a look at his face!!!!! It's like a stoned Darren from
Bewitched!!!!!! Kim looks like John Lennon, the wolfboy in his zoot
suit looks satanic...check out what direction his neck is facing! And
Matt just looks stoned. It's pretty funny! I may actually order one...

warning: the caricature may scare small children and mites.

I think you misread my post, caryn. from the date you give above,
there is no way that we influenced the decision to resurrect the ultramega
logo. kim had already taken the initiative and put it on the pn clip. I
was actually referring to the new caricature shirt, which seems
ultra-recent to me, and something we were talking about when frank asked
us for our ideas on merchandising. sadly, as nice as it looks, the artwork
is done by ashley mott (I *know* I've heard his name somewhere before) and
not frank.

Okay, FIRST, i apologize in advance if this is a topic that has been
discussed before (<---------- my disclaimer for being a not-so-new yet
still newish newbie, just in case ;-)

I have been thinking about song titles, and remembering back to my
writing days with my band and how some songs are titled based on an
actual lyric and others are seemingly unrelated to an outsider....(of
course, a common SG creative twist they throw in...) and then I
started thinking about APPLEBITE...

A bite of an apple, a small piece, a glimpse of "Apple" , a tribute to
MLB's never released album?? The lyrics could certainly relate to our
dearly departed andy (m.h.r.i.p), as well as the music.....

Anyone else thought about this or maybe agree? (or feel like flaming
me for bringing up a topic that may have been beat to death in the
past?? ;-)

myself for those of you who already know all this):

I'm carrying out research on music for my Ph.D, and I want to use this list

I hope i can squeeze this in, before today's post goes out, and yes, I will
have a string, or tie, or what's the word, the one where this post is
soundgarden - related, whatever, bear in mind i'm rather hammered........
I GOT THE NEW PEARL JAM......
at 12:00 AM, I was in line at the blockbuster music in downers grove
illinois to buy the new pearl jam, and meet some idiot named freak from our
local radio station (Rock 103.5) who was to be there for the
festivities....in case you're wondering, people from radio stations are long
haired losers like a lot of us.........
anyway.......it TRANSENDS MUSIC......and im not saying that as some 14 year
old neo-alternative fag with my bush cd in my pocket, but as someone who
LISTENS to music, not just listens to music..........
the beauty of the album is its versatility.........jeff, stone, and mikes
guitar riffs are extremely powerful....not powerful in a pantera sort of
way, but in the way that strikes a chord inside of you.......they go from
punk chords, to neil young hard rock chords, to tom petty type riffs, and
beyond. and, much like our common bond, SOUNDGARDEN, even more important
than the looming guitar riffs, lingering high above everything else,
overpowering all the amplified sound, is eddies VOICE......he controls the
mood. he booms above all the other components of each song.
the album is so different from song to song. so far, who you are is
my favorite. its one of those we are the world, lets eat shrooms (hi
shroom) and hug our dad type of jams. plus the album itself unfolds into
four different sections, with another sleeve inside that contains like 10
polaroids of all the shit from the cover....very cool. not one you'll find
at the discount rack at best buy a year from now, with RATT or something.
anyway, flame away, i don't give a fuck. buying this album must be
like what it felt like buying sgt. pepper 30 years ago. it makes you feel
proud to be a piece of shit from the 90s.
oh yeah, the tie, or string, or whatever......it's like i told
tonerkins........think of it like this......new soundgarden album, new pearl
jam album, no tour dates for either of
them........................................................................
...............
they did it before........
and for whoever feels they have to choose sides.......give it up.......stop
being cliche....cause you know a sg/pj tour would be the greatest
combination of all time.....screaming trees can open...................thank
you and i'm out...................THE BIG JOE

But it all makes such
Sense to me i need room to breathe
I work for the goals that i set
Wasted time it weighs on my mind

kim is east indian, or at least that's his heritage, and in their belief
system there is no such thing as satan or the devil. now, of course, he
could have been raised christian, but you have no way of knowing if kim even
subscribes to the christian theories of satan. to many people, it's just a

Hello Everyone!!

ok....ok... I am all caught up on digests and some what caught up on back
mail ( sorry!! ) I wanted to post this while it was fresh in my mind...... so
here it goes!

A couple of days ago someone made the comment about getting hats done on the
list...instead of.....or along with new shirts!! I would like to volunteer
myself to undertake this new task. This is kinda wierd because I had
approached Seth with the same idea ( getting hats done with the fork logo )
about 2 weeks ago after he recieved my home made list shirt....as I
explained to him and now I will explain to you all....a close friend of mine
owns an Embroidery shop here where I live.He does VERY good work and is VERY
dependable.I know that he would give me a good deal on anything that I would
need.Of course the prices would depend on alot of things.... how many hats...
what type of hats...( cotton or wool )... and the cost of doing the design...
( which I think that I can get him to do for free )
I will look into what he can do for me then I will post the prices to the
list... and I guess we can go from there! ( and of course he does samples..
which I would be more than happy to send out !!!!!)

I also can get shirts done through Jeff's ( the Embriodery guy ) friend.....
He is also very good and dependable...and Jeff seems to think that I shouldnt
have a proplem getting the shirts for under $8.00.( but I hate to say all
that when I havent talked to the guy myself!!!!) I know personally that the
shirts that he uses are good quality shirts and he does good clean designs!!

I know that you all are a little sketchy about doing this sort of thing
again... but I am NOT NOTHINGMAN!! I think that there is a few people on this
list who can vouch for me on that one!! Also if anyone wants to help... hey
great...!! the more the merrier!! you could come down to the shop and hoop
the hats and trim threads!! ( what a glorious job!!).... I guess what I am
trying to say is this... I am offering to undertake this job!! I won't let
you guys down!!!!!*** JEZZ now I feel like I am running for office or
something!!
" If I am nominated I will promise too............"hehehehe!!!! No seriously
though.. I will look into the prices of these items and I will let you all
know then I guess we can go from there!!!
DEAL???

WHOA.. thanks for the listen!!
