it's funny that you say that greg, because just about all I hear
on slaves and bulldozers other than chris' vocals is ben's bass. he works
overtime in that song, and since he had a hand in writing the music that
doesn't surprise me.

as for more drums on jcp, on one level that seems almost
impossible :) but as for the mix, I think they were going for a more
chaotic feel through the thrashing of guitars and drums in equal amounts.
but if they were to record that song now, with their emphasis on raising
the level of drums in the mix and getting the best sound out of matt's
kit, you can bet that matt would be a little more prominent.

Remember a while back, when Soundgarden (or A&M or Silver Mgmt, whoever)
filed a complaint with that company that had soundgarden.com for thier
domain? Well I checked it out today, (only cuz I remember someone saying
that they went to the sound garden) and I guess Soundgarden, the band,
won. Cuz now the name of the site is cdjoint.com

I got the bimh single today. god i hate import prices, but with bleed
together and birth ritual demo i guess i got a good deal, ($12.99 us)
still looking for an affordable copy of SOMMS so whoever doesn't have one
you aren't alone.

Oh, has anyone been to the imusic site lately? God, would it kill them to
do a text version of that site??? It gets annoying waiting for all the
images to load. I checked out thier FAQ and even all of that was all
images! I should go an complain..anyways, i better get some sleep..

when soundgarden toured here in early 1994, they were a part of
our country's lollapalooza (the big day out). on the same bill were the

Nah, I didn't make a smart-ass comment to anybody. All I said was
"Soundgarden are not Grunge...". Admittedly, my sentence was a little
ambiguous and I didn't clearly state why I made the comment, but eveybody
just put two and two together and got seventy-five, leading them to
assume that I was making a "smart-ass comment" (as you put it) and was
trying to attack people (which I was not). Let me put it another way. I
join a SG mailing list full of people, do you really think that I don't
know that people on here do not see SG as a Grunge band!? Think about it!!

As someone pointed out already, its best not to assume intonation
into somebody's post as you can never be sure.

\You appear to have gotten the wrong end of the stick. I am not against
being flamed, it's something that happens to everybody on the 'net at
some point - a lot of newsgroups I've joined are very vicious that way
and I can give as good as I can get. My objection with the flaming on
here was that, initially I found the list to be unfriendly and anything I
posted, whether it was antagonistic or not was either ignored or flamed.
Again, let me put it another way to make it clearer for you. How would
you like it if you went up to somebody in the street to ask for the time,
and they just turned round and abused you for no reason? Or how
about if you approached me somewhere (hypothetical example),
attempted to make conversation with me, and again, I just started
being rude to you, for no reason? Flaming's all well and good when
there's a reason for it, but flaming for flaming's sake is a little
infantile, IMHO.

With this flaming situation, both sides are at fault.
I must admit that sometimes I can be a little overly outspoken at times,
and given that this is the internet and we all have no way of meeting
each other face to face, the intentions behind a person's post and the
words they used cannot really be anticipated (as I stated above,
intonations cannot really be read into a person's post - although ascii
smileys do go some way towards rectifying this problem). Also, we really
have to consider personality types. Being the sort of person who
readily admits their own faults, I will say that my impulsive and
instincitve reaction to being attacked, no matter how big or small is to
attack back - and to do so in a lot nastier a fashion. I admit, I really
should count to ten before hitting the reply button, but that's me. At
least I've admitted *my* wrongdoings. I still believe, however, that
someo people around here should be a lot less trigger happy. Perhaps
then outsiders would not perceive the list to be so hostile.

You are not talking to somebody who's new to to the 'net so I am well
aware of most of what you say, but I do appreciate your advice. Again,
problems could again be solved if some people didn't presume to know it
all...

> Seth, one more job in an endless parade of jobs).

Well, to round this post off, I'd just like to bury the hatchet (somewhat
more mature than continuing the flames), and I apologise FOR MY PART of
the contention. I do not believe that I am completely in the right and I
admit that the ambiguity of textual communication can make perceving the
intentions of a person's post a little unclear, so I apologise if people
have taken things I have written completely the wrong way (and many have
- - the Soundgarden/Grunge thread being a good example of this). I'd like
to give this list and everyone on it (including those with whom I have
had private discourse) the benefit of the doubt and start again from scratch.
I do not believe that everyody on here is genuinely obnoxious and
hostile, but if anything, I believe we can all learn an important lesson
from this whole episode. That lesson being communication and
self-control. If people (including myself) were a little more careful
with the way in which they communicated with others, then things would
not get taken the wrong way, people would not jump to the wrong
conclusions about what someone else has said and just start attacking
them. So, to reiterate a point I made earlier, I have no problem with
flaming, so long as it is called for. If someone started attacking and
beating you simply because you attempted to talk to them, and then they
turned round and said "Hah, you just can't take the heat!!", I'm sure
you'd be a little annoyed.

As far as I'm concerned, the subject is now closed and I'm
prepared to bury the hatchet. Again, I apologise for my part in this
whole silly affair. If anybody else wants to
continue flaming, however, then feel free to do so. I'll just ignore you.

Trying to be nice for a change,

Yeh, that happens with me as well. I can hear a song from a certian
period in my life which will bring back memories of that period.
Sometimes good, sometimes bad (depending on the song, the period and what
ws happening in my life at the time). A good example. I band I used
to like quite a lot, namely Monster Magnet I cannot listen to any more
because their music brings back bad memories of an extremely fucked up
period in my life. Also, some songs just make me
think of some really strange things its as if the songs just puts a
mental image in your head when you hear it. That's cool when that
happens. The song "Applebite" on DOTU, for example makes me think of a
scorched, desserted and dessolate planet which has been wiped out.
Either that, or a film with two endings, the song bringing to mind the
"bad ending" (ie the baddies win).

In the March (i think), 1994 issue of SPIN magazine with SG on the cover (i
think this is on the page - if not, I have it) - SG & Smashing Pumpkins were
both playing at Australia's Big Day Out festival. Billy was kind of
psychoanalyzing Kim, & Kim was just being his usual self. I guess that could
be taken as Kim badmouthing SP. Kim also says that they're a great band in
the same article.

Subject: Why I Like Soundgarden in 200 Words or Less by C. Haun Haun

I have been listening to at least one SG song everyday, or almost
everyday, for about 7 years now. If I do miss a few days, I start
having this feeling that something is wrong and will finally realize
what it is. Oh, yeah, I havent heard THE MUSIC! This is especially
important if I am upset or having a bad day (which has been happening a
lot lately). Ty Cobb and Kyle Petty are indeed great for these
occasions--nice, loud, aggressive songs with liberal use of the f-word.
Yeah! I suppose it could be considered pretty juvenile when singing
fuck along with the music blaring from your CD player makes you feel
better....but hey, it works!

> There are also songs that when I hear them, I remember people, places,
> and events in my life. Music is just a part of my life, I guess that
> is why I never understood my family when they couldn't understand my
> need for it...

I can not, for the life of me, understand how people can NOT need it! I
think that music, or any other form of art for that matter, are the most
worthy achievements of human kind. But music has a power, not to merely
distract me from my problems, but to truly help me to handle them.
Perhaps that is one reason why many of us seem to be so emotionally
involved with our favorite bands. We may not know them personally, but
they sure have helped us through some tough times!

Everyone has their own way of dealing with stress and personal problems.
Some people buy self-help books. Some people go to shrinks. Some
people listen to Soundgarden. I prefer the latter.

The question about using SOMMS as an example of a palindrome
reminded me of a lovely <heavy sarcasm> experience I had in IRC
recently. I frequent the #chaos channel which, for those of you who
don't know, is a trivia game in which two teams have one minute to list
the top ten answers to the given questions. In this particular instance,
the question at hand was "well-known palindromes." I of course reeled
off satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas asap. My reward? Not only was it
not one of the answers, but one of the channel ops warned me in a
whisper about using the word "satan" on a "family channel." Sheesh!
Can we say "fascist?" After that encounter, I guess I would be hesitant
to let a 12 year old use it as an example at school. There are still plenty
of people out there lacking that sense of humor gene.

hey all...

in response to the report on kim's unpopularity in the realm of
smashing pumpkins fans...

the only thing i can recall about this is an interview a while back
in which kim was talking about sitting somewhere and billy c. came
walking up and starting waxing poetic about the evils of rockstardom
and his meaningless existence...

apparently kim kind of laid into him and told him (loosely
paraphrased), "look, you're having tremendous success and you
completely call all of the shots for your band. you are your band.
people are appreciating what you're doing. what more do you want?"
i don't billy took it too kindly but i apologize because that's all i
can remember...

if kim has gone on a more recent rant involving the pumpkins, i'm not
aware of it...if someone is, please share.

i hate the smashing pumpkins and i enjoy collecting fodder to feed my
hatred... :) (i won't get started on pumpking-dissing again,
though...glenn and i got into that way back in december and started
some nasty fights...give peace a chance, y'know...)

(it is tempting, though, all this talk about sg vs. pearl jam and the
pumpkins just makes me want to scour my mailreader files for my old
10+ page musical breakdowns comparing the bands in all kinds of
technical arrangement categories...those were the days...i'll spare you
all the agony of seeing those things again, though...)

<<Straight from The Rocket, under the "Recording News" section, in
REALL= Y small type, is a little tidbit on SG. It says, "Soundgarden
has remixed Rhinos= aur for release as a single." I remember someone
asking what would be the ne= xt single, and it looks like Rhinosaur is
on the way sometime in the near future.>>

In response to Rhinosaur possibly being the next single, thought I'd
post what the band had to say about the song when they talked to Mike
Jones of KISW in Seattle. It aired on May 13 (same time as the
national one did). Hopefully, the rest of the transcription will
appear sometime soon on the miscellany page.

******
Mike Jones: How about Rhinosaur?

Chris: Rhinosaur is Rockin!

?: We just came up with a new ending for Rhinosaur. You ll love it.

CC: It s very rock concertish.

MJ: Is it a big rock ending?

CC: No, it s a beautiful...

MJ: A la Iron Maiden?

CC: No no, not like that . It s kind of more of an instrumental
thing, like, uh, you ll have to be there.

?: Yeah.

?: Kim s kind of doing a jazz fusion thing.

CC: Rhinosaur is one of the songs on the record where the music was
completely finished and recorded without any idea of lyrics or vocals,
so it was finished really near the end of the record. We never really
have any idea what the record s going to be, until the very end.
Until, like, we re like walk out the door and go home. And then, oh
whatever we have is the record. But that s one of those cool surprises
at the end of the record kind of songs.

MJ: Was that a collaborative writing effort?

CC: I wrote the music and I wrote the lyrics. I guess it was pretty
much all arranged, wasn t it?

?: Yeah, it was, pretty much.
******

Forgive the question marks, but I couldn't identify any voices besides
Chris and Kim at the time. Anyway, the comment where they just came up
with a new ending for the song sounds like it might be the one they use
for the single. That or it could be the ending they will use when they
play it live (for the comment, you'll just have to be there).

Subject: A Begging Post

Hi people,
I have been a lurker on this list for quite a while, and have decided to
take the plunge. I am a Ph.D student, researching rock music. One of the
things that I am looking at is construction of identity, and the importance
of music in defining ourselves - both to ourselves and others. The other
thing that I hope you might be able to help me out with is the way we define
community. I hope to get a paper written soon that looks at these lists as
a type of alternative community.

Now - here comes the beg. Before I start writing, I need to know a couple
of things.
1. Does anybody object to me using this list and its members in my
discussion? I wouldn't use names or email addresses, so no one could be
identified.

2. Would any of you be willing to firstly answer a questionairre about the
list in general, and Soundgarden in particular for me?

3. Following on from this, I would like to set up 'interviews' via email,
with anyone who is really interested in being a part of this study. What
would be really good would be to get in touch with some of those on the list
in Australia, to see if we could get together.

I have chosen this list for a number of reasons. Firstly, I am a fan, so it
makes sense to look at a list that I also find interesting (and know what
people are talking about). Secondly, this list seems to be a really
committed one - the size alone proves that. And thirdly, the level of
debate on this list is really good - not just an endless analysis of who is
and isn't a god. The paper is going to be given at a conference of the
International Association for the Study of Popular Music, so you could all
end up mildly famous.

So there you go. If you have any comments to make, you can send them to me
directly. I need to know if this is a goer before I get too involved in the
research, but here is something that might persuade you. The only other
academic study I can find on music bases lists is one that was written on
the Pet Shop Boys. I would hate to think that others out there might get
the feeling that all lists were like that one - so help me put the record
straight.

Hope you can help me

Julie

from the '91 winter world tour and the '93-4 In Utero tour.
Unfortunately it does not appear to have the "rare" tracks that
Rolling Stone stated it would (unless they define "rare" as versions
never before released).

There is some info here, including track lists:

Also says in here that Nirvana's "From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, will
now be released on October 8th ( i think the original date was the 4th)...

that sounds pretty kool, the cause and everything, the artists...
something i wil have to obtain when it gets released..

Well when both bands where in Australia for the big day out Kim had a
discusion with Billy in which Kim said that he shouldn't complain about
success or fame when he tries to sell music to the public and sort of
payed him out for feeling sorry for himself. It wasn't an attack but more
a discussion but Billy took it personally and was upset by it. I wish i
remembered the article.

i suggest that instead of us giving individual go-aheads, we wait one
week and if there are no *objections*, it will be considered the
collective go-ahead.

  . .

Well I got it. But of course, my wonderful luck kicked in and my Cd-Rom
doesn't even believe that there's a CD in there. From what I've heard, the
only way to get that CD to work would be to get another CD-Rom. Which I
can't exactly do at this time. Fortunately, I am able to listen to the audio
tracks (the acoustic version of Like Suicide has convinced me that SG MUST
do an acoustic set!), and my friend let me try it out on his computer . . .
of course now I'm even more angry than before, because that thing's even
better than I expected! Why have I never seen the video for The Day I Tried
to Live? That's a damn good video . . . but back to the point:

Before I have to return this thing, could anybody tell me where that
Badmotorfinger wheel game thingy is? Or is that just the pong-like thing?

Or even better, does anybody know how I could get this thing to WORK??

ARRGH!!

Not to mention album names, BAND NAME, etc. . . I mean, the album title this
list itself is named after: Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas . . .
Soundgarden (although my parents aren't SG fans, they're always saying how
they love the name...), Superunknown, Badmotorfinger . . . this could go on
forever (or at least until I run out of names) ... They've just got a talent
for naming stuff!

Subject: The Pinky Thing?

Once again:

You know you're obsessed with Soundgarden when you spend hours (or at least
a while) trying to figure out what "the pinky thing" is in An Unkind!

And I think I got it . . .

. . . try the main riff, but instead of a pulloff 2-0 on the fifth string,
just slide 7-5 on the 6th . . . it always sounded to me like there was a
slide there . . . this manuever is fairly difficult (not dreadfully, but
yadda yadda blah blah...), and it requires the pinky . . . eh? Have I got
it? Ha ha!
