From: nadia <nadia@novaproj.org>

hi...i'm new and I was gonna just read the digest for a while before I
posted,but,
something happend to me today and I need everone's help (you all have
also been in the flaming mood lately -not that I care- but attitude will
help with this).

Ok In the last three weeks I've been getting hate mail and I had no idea
why - it was only a few people but today I found out why... I have this
really shity web page that i made like 3 months ago and it's ok, I have
this section called "Shitty bands of the month" and another one called
"bands I like", so I get this mail today that says:

>ani defranco has talent, as opposed to the bands you like...
>(Don't take this as flame mail, you said ani defranco was shitty, i had
>to protect her :)

The bands on my shitty list are Ani Defranco, Presidents of the United
States, and the Cranberries. On bands I like was pearl jam, SOUNDGARDEN,
babes in toyland, 7 year bitch, hole... (you can go see for yourself
http://www.novaproj.org/~nadia/bands_I_like.html) anyway I wrote him back
and told him #1. I do NOT like talentless bands, #2.Why I hate ani (I had
a bad expierence with her music -email me and I'll explain) #3. That it
WAS a flame to say all the bands i liked were talentless, etc. I used
fuck alot, I also asked him what the hell he was doing at "seattles
reighning grunge queen's" web page (there is a disclaimer at the
beginning) if he hates grunge/rock.

My page has not been submitted to search engins (because it sucks right
now) (AND I DONT WANT IT SUBMITTED) I had asked how he got to my page
because it had not been submitted and this was his reply. He emailed me
back and told me that i was way too angry and had been listing to way too
much grunge and informed me to check out the Yahoo! search for ani
defranco.
At that point I lost my shit and went to Yahoo! TO FIND MY PAGE SUBMITTED
between the 30th-40th listing, named "bands I hate" in the page summary
was my email address.

Do you understand my anger???
I think that it was totally uncalled for for him to do that cause now I'm
gonna get hate mail from crazy ani fans and I had to beg my friend to
make that page ("bands i hate") unsearchable (not sure how he did it) so
the link wont work, but still my EMAIL ADDRESS is there and that freaks
me out.
I dont want my address where i didn't put it.

So I asking you to please email this guy and tell him how much
soundgarden ISNT TALENTLESS, I didnt have the time to defend seven
different bands. PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE.

Flame to Luke Renn, oregon@voicenet.com , Please.

Just thought I would let everyone know that I finally got a copy of SOMMS. I
live in Baltimore and I went to the record store which is called
"Soundgarden" (how appropriate), and I was looking through used cds and came
upon BMF which I needed a new copy of the cd since my jerk-boy ex took it a
long time ago, so I found it and to my surprise it is a double cd with somms,
woo hoo!!!!!!! Only $7.00 too, what a great deal!

Sorry, I just had to share my happiness for a bit ;)

I always thought the first half of BMF was too "light." It may sound
odd, but I think the bass and drums could really be turned up a little
more through JCP... especially the drums on JCP. And I'd like to hear a
little more Ben on Outshined and Slaves and Bulldozers.

Agreed. O'Brien is a master, probably the hottest guy out there right
now. Not just SU, but some of the other work he's done as well. It's
always got an intense, crunching feel to it. And of course, the
harmonics, feedback, and other assorted acoustic gems that SU is full
of... If I were going in to the studio to record an album, he's the guy
I'd want producing it.

Subject: Be happy! and sg & aic

As far as all these posts saying that we should be happy and stop
flaming, I kinda get this stupid drippy feeling reading them. I mean, I'm
as much in favor of peace and harmony as anyone else, but it's not
something that just happens. The conflicts on this list are something
that need to be resolved. Not things you can just ask to go away.

Layne and Jerry do write more personal lyrics. Perhaps their lives have
been more dramatic than Chris's/Ben's/etc. Pain and tragedy typically
bring out emotion that transfers well to art. I remember a discussion of
Footsteps vs. Times of Trouble. Eddie certainly sings w/ more emotion,
but the better song is ToT (imho).
But, my point of this post was to recall when the lyrics for DOTU were
first posted. It was before almost all of us had heard the album. Someone
pointed out that song for song, more were written in first person on this
album than any other. I'm betting that it doesn't have to do with more
pain in Chris's life. In fact, I can't explain this trend at all.

I would think BMF as more likely to have the greater number of first
person lyrics because of when the songs were written. Didn't Chris hole
himself up in some cabin to write them? Or maybe that was just the music
and he added the words later. Didn't some interview with matt recently
quote him as saying he was waiting for Chris to finish the lyrics to some
song?

I know that Layne typically writes the words to AIC's songs in studio,
does Chris do the same?
i feel no need to tie up or summarize.

The funny thing is, I seem to remember you making a smart-ass comment
to someone who told a simple anecdote about his or her father
referring to Soundgarden as a "grunge" band. I don't much participate
in the flame wars here on the list, but for you to write this big
anti-flaming manefesto after doing some pretty petty flaming yourself
is somewhat hypocritical, IMHO. (Now I suppose you'll flame me for
pointing that out).

When I first joined the list I read it for a while before contributing
because I was afraid of getting flamed. Actually I think this mailing
list is pretty friendly for the most part. People using the internet
have to develop a little thicker skin. I've gotten more practice with
that on the newsgroups I subscribe to, which I think are much nastier
than this mailing list. I understand the Monkees newsgroup is
"flame-free", perhaps you'd be more comfortable there.

This list goes through periods when everyone seems a bit crabby. If
you don't like it, just wait it out and it will change, or take it
upon yourself to start a new thread. I really don't mean to be bitchy,
but flaming people for flaming is a bit stupid. Sometimes if you
respond with self-control to a flame, especially if you do it by
private email, you can actually make a friend. A while back I got a
really nasty email flame. I responded nicely, but nice in a smart-ass
kind of way, and eventually we started communicating in a friendly way
and found we had a lot in common besides this one thing we definitely
disagreed on. I agree that there are better ways to express
disagreement than flaming, and being the target of flame-throwers can
sting, but in the real scheme of things is it really that big of a
deal? If you don't like flaming, don't do it yourself.

A while back someone mentioned putting together a FAQ for the mailing
list. This would really be helpful for the people who don't have
access to the web. I, like Caryn, never considered that some people on
the list might not have access and did consider their questions pretty
dumb considering the abundance of info on the web page. To prevent
embarassment on all sides perhaps a FAQ would be a good idea (I know,
Seth, one more job in an endless parade of jobs).

I guess that's enough for now.

Seems like I remember reading or hearing Chris say that Slaves & Bulldozers
was about greed. This would go along with either theory - record
company/band relationship or drug addiction.

>does anyone else out there listen to sg every day... or try to?

I have listened to SG in one form or another almost every day for a couple of
years - before that i was less obsessed.. Pretty sad, huh?

Also, did I dream this (wouldn't surprise me one bit) or has anyone else
heard that Ben wrote Never Named when he was sixteen?

Here's another possible thread...SG and education.

My son came home from his 3rd day of sixth grade last week - He was all
excited 'cause they had learned about palindromes at school. He wanted to
take SOMMS to school with him as an example. I told him I wasn't sure if his
teacher would really appreciate it (i'm all for freedom of expression but
we're kind of living in the Bible belt here). After much protesting on his
part, we finally agreed that his teacher/classmates probably wouldn't get it
& worse, something could happen to our copy of SOMMS.

My point here is that he was the only kid in his class who knew what a
palindrome was....see, not only is Soundgarden the best band in the world -
they're educational as well!! Chris also knows the meanings several words
that he never would have cared about knowing if not for listening to Sg.

I'm kind of curious - I don't think anyone else on the list has any kids as
old as Chris (12 next month), but if faced with a similar situation - do you
think you'd let your child/younger brother or sister use SOMMS or as an
example at school?

Enough rambling from me - I'll go back to my lurking mode now...

Marianne

I have only two tapes riding with me each day to work.. I.S "So Sad"
and SG "DOTU". The ride to work is maybe 15 min. (on a good day) but
I can get at lease two songs from each tape before I get there. The
selection depends on the mood of the day...

As long as the child understands what the information is about and why
he is using the it - sure.

Don't you find that most of situations that occur in your normal day
you associate with a song (mostly SG). The other day I was at the
post office, two men got into one ugly fight in the parking lot - in a
flash two songs came to my mind (Mailman and Mind Riot).

But when I want to feel free and forget the worries of the world, I
head out to an open road, open the windows on the Jeep, and drop in my
BMF tape.. Then I break my "Rust Cage" and feel good..

There are also songs that when I hear them, I remember people, places,
and events in my life. Music is just a part of my life, I guess that
is why I never understood my family when they couldn't understand my
need for it...

Playing ty cobb is fun.

Cherry lane says that in Dusty, the low e string is tuned down to a G.
First of all, i don't believe that, second of all, even my .52's would

Maybe he has reached a point in life that he can relate to others
emotions because he has experiences them first hand. He may not be
going through those emotions or trials now, but he did at some point.
Haven't you ever sat with a friend listening to a problem they are
having, only to response with "I know what you mean, been there done

Subject: Re: every thing I've held is what I've freed...

One thing that I really enjoy about SG lyrics is the way Chris uses
contradictions (not really the right word) or opposites in his verses.
     Consider the following:
     Looking California, Feelin Minnesota...
'Everything I've held is what I've Freed...'
'Hands are for Shaking, Not Tying...'
     'Angels in a Cage...'
'Lives we make, never seem to get us anywhere but dead.'
     'She lived like a murder...'
'If this is'nt what you see, it doesn't make you blind...' (and
     virtually the whole song Superunknown)
'Sharpened my wits, on a dead mans skull.
'Used my inspiration for a guillatine (sp?)"
     'Down on the Upside'

     even in song titles:
     Pretty Noose
     Limo Wreck

A lot of SG lyrics and song titles seem bind togethter words or
phrases that protray massively different feelings - on different ends
of the spectrum. I know there are more examples of this, but these
are all I could think of right now. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have always felt Chris's writing was mostly done in metaphors. I
like how he gives you one line and you can use it in many ways. Then
you can see one meaning for a verse and someone else can read
something totally different in it. I believe this is why there is
such a diversity of personality with in the Soundgarden fan club. SG
fans are not very stereotyped. We cover a large range of life styles

Hey guys,
I was at the local Record Revolution and saw 2 used
copies of SG: Into the Upside. It's a DOTU preview/interview
disc. The tracks on it are PN, Dusty, Applebite, Rhinosaur, BIMH,
BUTOW, and NTMF. The interview is conducted by Alain & Natasha

I forgot--it also has the track "An Unkind". I already have a

The discs are $20 each. I don't know if this is cheap or really
expensive or what not, but if this is considered an import or
something like that, $20 is relatively cheap (at least by
Cleveland prices). I work in a mail room, so I can send it to

It may be a typo,To tune down to a G,means taking the low E down 4 1/2
steps.I use a 46 for my low E string and If I tried to tune it down that far
the string would just flap.
If this is true, they must have used a piano string to tune it
down to G.What is 4 1/2 steps?is that the distance of a Fourth or a fifth?
I recommend Tuning the Low E up 1 1/2 steps to a G.Might be a little tight,
but a least you will be able to get more then just Flup, tsk sound out of the
string.
The Low E does not play much of a part in this song anyway.
it is only used once in the last measure. It is used to play a
natural harmonic on the 7th fret, followed by 2 natural harmonics
on the 5th string at the 7th fret.

Cherry lane says that in Dusty, the low e string is tuned down to a G.

Wow! Caryn you must of had to buy replacement speakers alot!! :-) I
listen to at least one or two Soundgarden songs every day. Whenever I
am in my car a SG tape is permanently in the tape deck. I may not
listen to the whole thing but at least a taste. Today it was BUTOW,
Burden in my hand and never named. I also go on kicks where I will
listen to one particular song repeatedly! When I am in a particularly
bad mood coming home from work and the traffic is a mess singing Ty
Cobb works wonders to squelch my desire to ram my car into some other

I think that I like Karaoke better than Bleed Together, in contrast
to Blind Dog. I can see why Karaoke didn't make it on to DOTU because
I think that it wouldn't have fit the mood of the album. I love DOTU!
It has got such a perfect balance all round. I guess you could say
that about the last three albums in particular by Soundgarden. Bleed
Together is good, it is yet another great punkish Soundgarden song in
the tradition of Kickstand and An Unkind.

Does anyone notice how Soundgarden B Sides seem to be heavier or
doomier than songs off the albums? Eg. Birth Ritual, Kyle Petty,
Heretic, Toy Box. I tend to feel that they seem to be a lot more raw than
the album songs.

With Slaves & Bulldozers I've always thought that it's just sort of
about someone who is really pissing you off, but the record company
thing does fit in. But the 'laughing every time I choke' and
'stealing jokes', sounds like someone who is teasing or something and
you want to get back at them, sort of like Mailman I guess.

S&B is the song that gripped me most on BMF when I first heard it. I
kept replaying S&B and JCP because I thought they were unreal.

With Caryn saying about Birth Ritual being her favourite song for
when she is pissed off, I always think it is interesting when you are
in this kind of mood what music you listen to. Sometimes I pump
myself up and listen to something aggressive like Pantera or
something, or songs like Limo Wreck and Mailman off Superunknown, and
other times I sort of mellow out a bit by listening to Alice In
Chains songs like Down In A Hole and Shame In You, which ends up
making me depressed. I think that is one of the coolest things about
music, the way that you can sort of control your moods or listen to
something after you have had a real shit of a day and come off
looking at the day in a different light. Anyone else feel the same?

I was bored the other night, and decided to make up a mix tape of a
bunch of my favorite SG songs. Well, I quickly found out that they would not
fit onto one tape, so I found my longest tape, and recorded these songs:

	Side1 Side2
	----- -----
Blind Dogs Searching with my good Eye Closed
	Toy Box 4th of July
	Earache my Eye Cold Bitch
	Jesus Christ Pose	Homicidal Suicidal
	Birth Ritual No Attention
Kyle Petty, Son of	Rusty Cage
	  Richard
	Ty Cobb Power Trip
Sub Pop Rock City	Girl U Want
	Big Dumb Sex Big Bottom
Show Me I Can't Give You Anything
	Stray Cat Blues Holy Water
				She's A Politician

I don't know anout you guys, but I think this is a pretty cool mix. Just
sitting here at work today listening to this tape has more than doubled
my output of usable code. The downside is that I drive a whole lot faster
now, and in this town, the cops don't like it too much. Oh well, I will just
have to be more careful. On to more code. Later all.

I think soundgarden's best angry song is kyle petty. that song
just smashes straight into the riff, with matt pounding and chris' vocals
from hell. limo wreck or tdittl would be good for that mood too, but
they take a little longer to warm up.

i saw a show in which the Ramones opened for White Zombie..

boy i'll tell you that was a story all in its self, i personaly went to
see White Zombie and i found it rather amusing that many teenage youth
especially girls had shown up for the concert to see the Ramones ..

well to be truthful the ramones did put on a good show however WZ
performance was a story all in its self, but in the end the whole
concert was great.

p.s. me and a fellow "metalhead" joked right before WZ came on ...."i
sure as hell hope all the little skaters and punkers left already"
needless to say the ones that stayed didnt go home empty handed

p.s2 i missed Lolapalooza this year cause i recently moved to virginia ,
and i was curios about SG performance and my most fav band METALLICA'S
performance.

from memory, I think it was kristin. did matt say that chris
still had to work out the vocal melody, or the lyrics themselves?

I was listening to superunk and bmf last night, and I was
wondering what the soundgarden catalogue of lyrics would look like if
chris were not writing the bulk of them. when you look through the credits
there aren't a whole lot of them, which is a little strange when you
consider the writing talents of everyone in the band (but chris has some
lyrical talent, so we can let that slide).

so my question is: what is the best soundgarden song that has
lyrics written by someone *other* than chris? I think the entire list is
fairly short, but there must be a good one in there somewhere :) my two
favourites would have to be head down and room a 1000 years wide, lyrics
written by ben and kim, respectively. not just because they sound great,
but because they sound great without chris having much input <wishing I
could hear ben's first demo of head down>.

yes you can't clomp all seattle bands together, that is apparent.
About comparing Soundgarden to Pearl Jam and/or Alice in Chains,

You can't. : )
They're all entirely different from each other....as of late, Soundgarden
being the most developed of them.
Pearl Jam has wound down its singles to looooonggg meandering, soft, melodic
phrases that have a hard time ending...and the chord resolutions are very
predictable, as you said.
Soundgarden would be more closely related to early Pearl Jam. (Present
Soundgarden.) Matt Cameron leaves you in the air (blissfully) with syncopated
beats....and GOD the dissonant chords are great----you don' know where
anything will lead....sevenths and minor seconds everywhere you expect B
flats but get these A flats!!!...DOTU is definitely more complicated
melodically than Superunknown....
and in contrast to AIC, Alice in Chains is darker than Pearl Jam by a huge
margin...Pearl Jam is sort of yearning for days past, a sort of
nostalgic/melancholy/the world sucks attitude now. AIC uses twisted,
beautiful minor melodies, but keeps them all in sync, with fifths and
thirds....you know it's AIC when you hear the melody and backup going up and
down together in the same intervals. AIC is similar to Soundgarden with the
wailing guitars, but Soundgarden is the master of all. Just listen one day to
a recent Pearl Jam ("Who We Are.") a crescendoing AIC (Heaven Beside You) and
Soundgarden's "Burden in My Hand". Pearl Jam resolves totally....they always
have. AIC has that hectic phrase in the middle, then resumes resolving.
Soundgarden NEVER resolves.....until the very last note. Which is why i love
them so! NOBODY compares to Soundgarden! End of Story!!!!

That was a great comparison/summation of AIC,PJ, and SG. It is
sort of weird that PJ and SG have lost their distortion pedals on their
latest albums but AIC hasn't. Some people have called this a lack of
progression in the case of AIC. Anyway, Stephen Perkins was the drummer
for Jane's Addiction. He now plays for about 10 local LA bands and Porno
for Pyros. I dont like the Porno stuff as much as the Jane's stuff.
I still wonder where he is coming from on some of the Jane's beats.

Subject: Early warning for Brisbane Sommsters

Hey ya,

yesterday I got in the mail a notice about Red Hill Disc pro closing
down. And it seems with the closing down EVERY cd is being sold, at what
they call fire sale prices (whatever that really means!) Anyway I know
they have a copy of SOMMS and a few singles plus all the albums, so if
anyone is missing any now might be the chance to get some satuff cheap.
Plus they have heaps and heaps of other cds anyway!

This is early cause the sale is on sept 9th. Well the ad says sat sept
9th, but the 9th is Monday! anyway maybe sat 7th? I'll let ananyone that
wants to know know :) Too bad they don't have rare vinyl stuff :) But
they do have the rare singles of some bands :) :)

Hope it was ofd some interest to someone.

matt cameron is a very DIFFERENT drummer than jack irons. and if i may
remind the list, the album to be released NEXT WEEK will be the first time
that we will hear jack irons playing pearl jam songs that were written
*with* him.

i am no fan of jack's drumming by a long shot. however, he has had to play
songs that were not written with his drumming style in mind, in fact, dave
a's style is diametrically opposed to what jack's style is. dave was a big
rock drummer, whereas jack's style is more funk-based.

matt cameron is the best possible drummer in the world for soundgarden. on
t hat i will agree with you.

i have and have had a t-shirt with a cartoon rendering of the insert in
somms , i love my shirt
but the thing i like most about it is the New Damage lyrics on the back,
"the wreck is going down." i orignally saw the shirt being worn by Jeff
Ament , you all know him
anyway i havent seen it since , so i was wondering if this shirt was
rare or not ...

and i once herd that SG had a shirt that said "louder than fuck" on it
and as a parody the Melvins made a shirt that said "louder than
soundgarden" is any of this true , and if so i want the SG shirt

Howdy,

Straight from The Rocket, under the "Recording News" section, in REALLY small
type, is a little tidbit on SG. It says, "Soundgarden has remixed Rhinosaur
for release as a single." I remember someone asking what would be the next
single, and it looks like Rhinosaur is on the way sometime in the near
future.

Seattle Somms Meeting. I am presuming it's still on. I tend to do that
sometimes. Well, I'll be there. So come one, come all. I am also assuming
that it will be at the same place, direct left of the soundboard. I mean
DIRECT LEFT. Go to the soundboard, and find the left side, and that's where
the spot is at. If there's any more questions, just write me, I won't bite.

Subject: Kim Thayil vs. the Smashing Pumpkins

For some reason, people on the Smashing Pumpkins list dislike Kim for
allegedly ripping on SP. One 12-year-old girl said Kim "deserves to die."
That's an exact quote. Needless to say, I flamed her back to the Stone Age.
Anyway, SG and SP are my 2 favorite bands, in that order, but I've never
heard or read Kim say anything bad about SP. Is this true? Does anybody
have any quotes from Kim about this? Frankly, I'm not sure which is true.
It could be one of Billy's "blame everyone and everything" mood swings, but
then again, Kim is pretty outspoken. Until I find evidence, I want to give
the benefit of the doubt to Kim. Anybody know anything about this?

Vasant

i got my shirt today. actually, it got sent to my house a couple weeks
ago, but i just got to look at it today.. and i really dig it. the font
on the frotn of the shirt is cool, but that dymo tape is really better..
and the back graphic is cool... posting with my good eye closed in blue
letters on a b&w fork.. my shirt has absolutely no red on it
whatsoever... well, it must nto be up to par cause a lot of people are
disappointed in it, but i think it's a real good shirt. too bad it took
so damn long to GET Here, and too bad a lot of people don't have
theirs.. some things can never be explained.

i got the pretty noose part 2 of 2 single today, and that's neet.. its
got a dotu poster in it which i dig...

i was at a friend's house watching the tv-show "extra" (its a lot like
hard copy) and i noticed smashing pumpkins being played in the
background during one of their news stories. i thought that was neat.
but my heart jumped up in my throat when i heard em playing fucking
applebite inthe background. and if that wasn't enough, they played boot
camp as well. i gotta watch that show more often...

well, im gonna go now...
