You're not an idiot. Maybe I am...but isn't there a Loud Love green

I know I read this somewhere (here probably) that Ty Cobb will most likely be
a single in Germany... something about breaking boundaries & so forth.
Scanning the German singles chart I noticed something like "Ich bin die
Schiesse" which from what I recall means "I am the shit" so the language
doesn't seem to bother German radio.

A quick question - has anyone who lives outside the USA/Canada, received
their infamous somms t-shirt?

I've been checking on the digests that Seth has been putting on the www

correct word?) at receiving their t-shirt.

Could you please email me if you have got your shirt and you live outside

Many thanks

Er... there appears to be some confusion here. I never said anything
about the sound of an orchestra, I was talking about horned instruments
not suiting Rock music - that's two different things. The sound of an
orchestra backing a song is evocative and powerful - it works well, but
horned instruments like sax and trumpets are HORRIBLE!! They just parp
away in the background and completely spoil the sound of the song. A
good example, "Face Pollution" would've sounded a lot better without that
hideous sax in the background. Trumpets and sax ruin rock music and make
it sound like second-rate Jazz or soumething tacky like Madness or
something. Orchestral arragnements, on the other hands (which often
exclude wind instruments) sound a lot better. Don't get the two mixed up.

bullshit.

sorry, but you have GOT to be kidding me. the only flatulent sound
produced by a rock horn section comes from a rock horn section that:

a) sucks
b) is working with a poor arrangment

not all songs work with horns, obviously (incidentally, i don't think
my wave would work extremely well as is...but with a few changes,
something could be done...alto and tenor saxes on the main riff, some
blasting cornets on the high notes and some sliding t-bones on the
"keep it off my wave...my wave." i think there are still samples on
streamworks of the orchestra performances of "seattle songs,"
including black hole sun...check 'em out). but you have to be fair when
you're making these judgments.

someone mentioned the sax action on room 1000 yrs wide...i don't know
that i would count that because it's essentially a non-solo at the end
of the song...it was just thrown in and was never an integral part of
the tune. THAT is the kind of instrumental addition that i can do
without. (sorry, sg boyz...) :)

but when properly arranged, these "other instruments" you speak of so
disgruntedly are a beautiful thing. (see morphine, the urge,
rosegarden funeral, mighty mighty bosstones, etc...) between my
roomates/bandmates and myself, we have a musical assortment in our
basement consisting of two elec. guitars, four acoustics (two
full-size & nice, one plastic, and one miniature...four VERY different
sounds) two elec. basses, a mandolin, dulcimer, drum kit, keyboard,
two trombones and a harmonica...all integral parts of the songs we write.
we have four different amps and a buttload of various mikes that we
experimentwith ...each creates something entirely different that can be
difficult to match up well with other instruments. the key is in the
arrangement and performance.

brass sound too harsh? stuff in a bell mute.
too much difference between instrument sounds? arrange a part for an
"in-between" instrument (i.e. a mandolin or eukelele (sp?) to
bind together the sounds of a bass guitar and harmonica)

sure, if other instruments are tossed in for the hell of it, things
are going to get obnoxious (example: rancid's gratuitous use of a
trombone during their lolla set...eeewwwwww). but the same goes for a
standard guitar/bass/drum arrangement...things have gotta blend.

anything is possible...(case in point--anyone happen to see l.l. cool
j's version of "momma said knock you out" with a half-orchestra on
mtv about four years ago?...VERY impressive, and i don't like much rap
at all...the original version actually becomes listenable once you
hear the song performed in a way that lets you appreciate the MUSIC
and not just beat boxes and vocals...)

soundgarden does a spectacular job with the instruments that they use,
which basically represent traditional rock instrumentation, with
exceptions (ty cobb!!!). it's the way that they play, record and write
songs with them (tuning, texture, etc.) that sets them apart. i'm sure
chris and co. could formulate a killer arrangement with a wide variety of
instruments, but that just wouldn't be soundgarden-like, imho...let 'em
be...if they do a full orchestral album (live from the pit??? :) )
someday i would probably soil myself in disbelief, but it might be cool
to see. oh well...

my $.03 (i'm feeling generous today) :)

later...

You're right you didn't say orchestra, my mistake. But I still think
horned instruments used correctly can add to a song. It' just cuts it
to say HORNS are bad.
It depends on the arrangements. If done correctly they can really add
to the flavor of a song. I just fine it silly to say that any one
type of musical arrangement is dead wrong. All music is great if it
speaks to me, no matter the style or arrangement.

yeah! and maybe there'd be information there on the band members, like
their middle names, and their birthdays, and maybe some information on
susan silver, and a picture or two???

it's pretty obvious that nothingman is reading his mail, and he's sending

therefore, on behalf of the whole list, here's the new plan of action:

1) Any list member who has not received their shirt and who paid with a
postal money order, please go to the post office this week and file a
complaint. it's fairly standard.

2) Any list member who has not received their shirt and would like to take

forward you nothingman's address *and* phone number. I bet if his mother

Well, here's something. I got my shirt a couple of days ago. Since I took
about a few thousand years to get it, I had moved since ordering it. I
sent Nothingman an email before I moved (a few months ago. Politely asking
him to simply mail my shirt to my new address. This was right in the
beginning of the disappearance. Anyhow, when I got my shirt, it had one of
those forward sitckers on it because it was sent to my old address. (Thank
you very much Nothingman) So, if I didn't send in a change of address
form, I wouldn't have even gotten my shirt. Point? Even if he is reading
his mail, he doesn't give a damn.

so if you're gonna flame me, do it in private, umkay? Alright, on with the
madness:
Everyone is aware as to the fact that Eddie Vedder never ceases to annoy
me, even if he DOES have a great voice. Well, I think I've figured out one
of the reasons why. Eddie is a VAMPIRE!!! That's right!! One of the
UNDEAD!! I always knew that there wasn't something quite right about the
man. I had thought that I didn't like him mainly because of the way he
basically took over where Andy had left off (not his fault, I know... but I
can't help the way I feel)... but now I've got another reason. He's a
BLOODSUCKER!! Don't believe me? Well, check out these web sites that

Trust me... it's definitely worth your time to read this stuff. DAMMIT,
EDDIE VEDDER!!! YOU STAY AWAY FROM CHRIS!!! Y'know, I never did like the
way Eddie was eyeing up Chris when they kissed on that MTV thing (picture on
the web page). He's right at neck level with Chris, too. In fact, I just
went through all the pictures I've digitized, and RIGHT before they kiss, I
have this picture of Eddie staring at Chris' neck with some kind of maniacal
lust. Wanna see it? I'll upload it to ya. The proof is right there. Damn
you, Eddie Vedder. (Sorry Justine!!)
Oh yeah... and as to the whole SG computer stuff, I've got some groovy
SG wavs that I can send you people for your computers. I've tried to save
the .au files from the web page, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how.
Ummm... if anyone knows how I can do that without having to sign online to
hear the wavs, PLEASE let this computer moron know about it. But the wavs I
have are really groovy, and perfect for using with Windows (and AOL):
- - Chris "Come on, give it to me!!"
- - Chris "Bye folks!"
- - Matt "He is fucking cool!"
- - Chris "What're you doing here?!?"
- - Chris "Thank you! No really... thank you!!"
Those are just a few. If any of you want me to upload some of 'em to
you, just let me know. I'm nice like that. Love me, bye-bye...

Hiya everyone,

I was checking out some CD release dates, and low and behold, a movie called
"Feeling Minnesota" is coming out. It comes out on the 30th. But anyway,
someone out there really must like Outshined to title their movie after it's
lyrics. Hmmm, maybe it stars Ben as the psychopathic killer who uses people's
heads as beer steins. And there will be pauses in the movie where Kim
explains on a cosmic level the imagery used and how it pertains to his cat. I
think I'm getting a bit carried away here. I don't know if Kim really has a
cat or not, but he could. And Chris is an exotic dancer who is obscessed with
people named after fungus. <That was for you, Shroom> And last but not least,
Matt is a cowboy in the wild west who is transported into present time. Yeah,
and he carries two clubs instead of guns. Hmmm, maybe I should go back to
bed. Ohh, how we all wish this movie was about Soundgarden, but no. We would
have heard about already it if it were. :(

looked at the design... nice. Then I noticed something... it was one
of those stretchy crap shirts that go out of shape after one or two
washes and say "pull into shape after each wash". I took a look at the
others. They were all some "Nice Man" make... The DOTU shirt... The
Pretty Noose shirt... They were all the same.
Now, I was shocked. I've only got one SG shirt at the
moment. It's the tricycle job, but at least it's good quality. Can
somebody make it so that all SG T-shirts are made with Fruit of The
Loom stuff?! The low-quality of all the T-shirts I've seen is really
disappointing. All SG shirts should be Fruit Of the Loom! Uh... Life,

Subject: speaking of tighter and tighter...

i was listening to the one of the music stations that we get with our
satellite dish (it does nothign but broadcast songs, it doesnt show any
pictures) when suddenly tighter and tighter came on, i almost shit my
pants.. this doesnt mean anything though, this station has been known to
play non-singles all the time.. they played skin yard, for cryign out
loud. shroom was here, she can testify. =)
i dont know what relevance this has, but it was cool =) i never listen
to the radio or watch mtv, so i never hear of soundgarden unless its on
my cd player =) and i dunno.. before i liked tighter and tighter but i
wasn't absolutely crazy about it.. but now, i love it. it really
reminds me of limo wreck..

I just bought it 5 minutes ago. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet
but the good news is that there are two non lp tracks (KAraoke and Bleed
Together plus a demo version of Birth Ritual). Don't forget how different
the demo version of Fell on Black Days was compared to the final version.
That means virtually 3 new Soundgarden songs to listen to tonight :)

birth ritual was released in 94 or 95 as a b-side with some black hole
sun single, i think.. it's also on ultramega unknown, i think.. but
thats besides the point.. i've heard karaoke and the birth demo, so let
me know how bleed together is =) the title itself just makes me real
curious =) btw, where did you get the single? in case you got it at a
chain store maybe they have a franchise here that i can go buythe single
at..

thanks for reading
