I was just listening to the local rockradio station here in podunk
SLO, ca where they barely ever play anything by Soundgarden and the
DJ came on and said, "In the next hour you'll be hearing ...blah blah
blah...and a new one from Soundgarden." That got me excited so I kept
on listening only expecting it to be either pretty noose or burden,
but it was niether! They played Tighter and Tighter! Which totally
blew the hell out of me! Maybe they cued the wrong song or maybe they
just decided that would be a cool song to play. Oh well I don't care,
that song is one of my favorites and it was just my good luck i guess
that they even played it all. Yeah, anyways, I thought that I would
just share my joy with all of you and I pray that you can experience
the same kind of joy that I just experienced just now :)

Sleep tight for me, I'm gone...

Hmmm. I think I recal seeing interviews w/kim having either Reds or lights.
Chris smokes camels. (spin interview). Ben smokes winstons. Matt ???.

My parents hate my music they refer to it as "hate music". My father also
dances to SG. Very annoying at times. If you're in a car w/him and
spoonman comes on the radio. He bounces up and down to the drum solo.
Note: in a rented car w/o a tape deck otherwise it would be delbert
maclinton. Blah. He will also bash them by saying they have no musical
talent. They are aff key so on and so forth. Oh yeah. He always bashes
Matt's drumming. But that is because he used to be a drummer in a band and
he probably feels resentment because Matt puts him to shame. Just thought
I'd share.

yeah, those lame stickers really do suck. but I saw an
advertisment in kerrang (which was similar to sticker-talk) for down on

I queried in a post a few days ago if anyone knew who had come up with
the bmf logo design. Something in a blind dog post made my dumb ass
realize I could just look in the liner notes. duh! But as searches often
do, the answer to this question produced another. The bmf liner notes
credit art direction to "Len Peltier." Does anyone know if this is _the_
Leonard Peltier, infamous american indian prisoner? It would chalk up
another mark to the band's sympathies with amerindians. It kinda seems to
fit.

Also, does anyone know of any other Mark Dancey design products? I would
be interested to see what else he's done.

I would check some of this stuff on the web, if I had some decent web access.

And finally, Steve mentioned a program called Juno a couple months ago.
It's a free email program, where (i think) you receive advertisements,
but pay no fee. Anyway, if anyone is interested in that, Blockbuster
Video (my employer) is giving out free disks for Windows (blech) with any
rental. So go rent Motorvision or Louder than Live (though I wouldn't be
surprised if you're local store had neither) and get hooked up. If your
local store doesn't have the disks and you _really_ want one, i might be
able to help out.

Interesting! I can't agree or disagree with you on this. A part of
me wants to hear a full blown version of a SG song done with full
instrumental backing. There is something grand about hearing a so
called "rock" music piece orchestrated into a classical and powerful
selection. Jon Lord of Deep Purple use to do this all the time.

But then I love nothing better than the hard driving sound of guitars
and drums. To say one or the other is good or bad just isn't ease.

I would love to hear "Into the Void (Sealth)" done with a full
orchestra..

i don't think it would go over very well. I personally love the song

SUBJECT: SG Merchandise / What not....

While I don't have specific ideas for T-shirts at the moment, I do
have some thoughts. I love the SG caricature idea. My favorite PJ
shirt is the white World Tour w/caricature. A little SG humor
would be a nice contrast, don't you think? Also, actual band photo
t-shirts are kind of cheesy, IMHO. I also have to agree with
Rainman in that black and white shirts (not white so much) are old.
Especially black - it's SO heavy metal. I love my grey SG Lolla T.
Song lyrics are good - ESPECIALLY SG lyrics. Just think of the
awesome images that come to mind when reading their lyrics. I also
prefer tees with Soundgarden spelled out clearly on the back. Oh
sure, it's fun to try and have people wonder and guess what you're
wearing, but around these parts, people don't have a clue. (The
front plate on my car is a large "NIN". I pull into a parking lot
and a young lady parking near me says "What's NIN? Is that a
   sorority?").

As for other SG merchandise ideas, I'm with SkyVista on the
car stuff. SG plates or plate frames would be cool, especially
for those of us who don't like to put stickers on the car. As for
the SG air fresheners, they make those already. I have a couple
that I bought a couple of years ago. If I see anymore, I'll scoop
them up for anyone that wants them (although I haven't seen any for
a while). I was at a record show Saturday, and my photo-man is now
making those cheesy plastic photo key rings. So I picked out a
great Lolla 92 Chris shot for one side, and an awesome Lolla 96
Chris shot for the other side, and hung it in the car from the
visor. Beautiful. Makes those long commutes just a little bit
   easier.

OH - and here's some weird stuff that already exists: When I get
home from work, I toss the car keys on the SG BMF KEYRING, take off
my suit and slip into my SG BOXERS, pour some wine into my SG BEER
MUG, and check the date on my 1996 SG CALENDAR. And at Christmas,
don't we all hang our SG FAN CLUB ORNAMENTS on our trees?] I'm sure
there are lots of weird things already out there. Anyone??]]

I love Rainman's survey idea. I think it would be so cool to know
all the different kinds of people that make up this list. Anyway,
   enough rambling. Ciao babies....... Ang

Sorry about the incomplete review of Karaoke the other day.
The song begins with a 'fake' intro -- imagine your younger
brother's band pretending they're playing a sold out gig at
The Garden. The hype. The hoopla. The false grandeur.
The cymbal crashing, guitar wielding mess stops after 30
seconds and the smoother, poppier, pedestrian body of the
tune kicks in. PROBLEM...They needed to either take it in a
Spinal Tap direction or go all out quality pop like they did
with 'Big Dumb Sex'. The theme of the lyrics is similar to
Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing', but we never feel SG's
sarcasm or thorough disgust. To the 'outside world' (non-
SOMMSers), 'Karaoke' presents SG as a REALLY BAD pop band
with a great vocalist. (Still, 12 cheesy 'oh, yeahs' in a
single tune is too many, no matter who's singing.) After 5
minutes, 'Karaoke' builds back to the 'false into' grandeur
and takes a boring 60 seconds to end. I was disappointed
with this terminally mediocre tune, but was delighted that
the guys were smart enough producers to realize it could
have added nothing to DOTU. (The sound is obviously from
the DOTU period with a faint echo used throughout most of
     the vocals.) -Vikki :(

I feel like Arthur when he finally found the holy grail. Granted, Arthur
probably didn't have the blessed grail goddess he met on the internet
send him the vessel, but it's the end of an epic adventure for me. I now
possess SOMMS. One I can cradle in my arms and call my own. All thanks to
the blessed SOMMS goddess/finder herself, dena. So, add me to the little
list of owners and add on 2 for people I know who have it. A big thanks

Am I allowed to have my own giveaway? Eric?

Anyway, all this talk about t-shirts reminded me of a SG t-shirt I bought at
a hole-in-the-wall record store (the best kind!) in Miami about two years
ago. It's light light tan, with a square collage type thing on the front
that shows the covers of Screaming Life /Fopp, Ultramega OK, LTL, and BMF,
plus some cd singles like JCP, Outshined, Rusty Cage, and Loudest Love.
There's nothing on the back (which is the main reason I never wore it).
 It's a Hanes Heavyweight pre-shrunk and it's brand spanking new. I've never
seen it anywhere else. I've had it tucked away, but I think it's time I try
to find it a loving home, with someone who will wear it and take good care of
it. If anyone out there would like to have it, e-mail me directly and I'll
draw a name this Thursday night. Winner need not be present to win.

Got my Launch this weekend. Pretty good, pretty good. I kind of like having
all that power over Soundgarden at my fingertips. "Chris, you may speak
now". I had bought the last Launch, with Bush on the cover, because it said
it had some kind of Soundgarden interactive doo-hickey on it that turned out
to be total bullshit. But I love the whole concept - definitely worth $10.
And this month's Launch has a double bonus - Kevin Spacey! Too cool.
ANYWAY, I'm listening to Karaoke, and thinking "now I know why it wasn't on
the album". Before you flame........I just think it's one of those songs
that has to grow on you. It's a GREAT song compared to the sludge that's
released these days. And Matt gives it the JCP work-out towards the end.
Definite potential - I just have to give it a few more listens.

Incidentally, for those of you who haven't purchased Launch yet, they're
having some kind of contest - all you have to do is fill out their survey and
either mail, fax, or e-mail it by Sept 30, 1996 - one entry per person, no
purchase necessary. The grand prize is.....a drum roll please......a trip
for two to Seattle for the premiere of "Hype!" (hey, you never know who will
be there), plus a special VIP tour of the Seattle mucic scene. This would be
cool to win, just to finally get to go Seattle - for free. Anyway, if anyone
needs further details, let me know.

~ You know you're obsessed with Soundgarden when the boss' s 10 year old
daughter comes to work for the day, comes to see you in your cube, and it's
only the 2nd time you've ever seen this child in your life, and she says to
you "I thought of you the other day when they played Burden in My Hand on MTV
- - I know how much you love Soundgarden". sigh

A&M records...well anyways, for a joint and five bucks, he gave me a
promotional CD called "Into the Upside"......A Soundgarden interview with
Eleven's Alain and Natasha....the Cd has the band talking about every song
on DOTU, what the meaning of each song was, the inspiration for each song,
etc......then the end is them commenting on Lollapalooza and the Ramones...
Does anyone else have this? If not, email me privately for a trade....I'll
also give excerpts if anyone has questions about songs......L8RZ

Subject: Karaoke
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I've been reading the opinions of "Karaoke" and I think I agree with
parts of each one. It's an incredibly catchy song, much like many of
the songs on DOTU, though it's different in that it's made up of a
bunch of sections that sound strikingly dissimilar (contrast: "Burden
In My Hand" is catchy but sounds pretty much continuous). I don't
think it's a disappointment, which is a relief after my inability to
enjoy DOTU -- the one part of the song that sounds anything like DOTU
sounds like my favorite song from that album.

It starts with a frenzy and dies into one note. This one note leads
into the "quiet" section, which sounds very much like "Applebite" -- a
similarity which definitely places it in the DOTU era. Chris' voice is
not natural here, it's going through some sort of processor. The verse
ends with Chris screaming on top of himself and leads into what surely
must be the joke, with a repeated "Oh yeah." The choruses (see Vikki's
lyrics) are some of the most catchy music Soundgarden has ever
written, which makes sense if this is a commentary on the armies of
bands that do nothing except release hook-laden pop that all sounds
the same.

The last time that the two choruses appear, the parts get more and
more active until the final variation on the chorus, which disappears
into a frenzy that mirrors the opening.

One good thing about this track is that Matt is really going all-out,
whereas the drum parts sound pretty simple and -- dare I say it? --
uninteresting on most of DOTU. As was pointed out in a previous
review, he gives the song the JCP workout towards the end. I also like
Chris' harmonies with himself: one low part and one screaming high
part with effects.

No, it doesn't even come close to stacking up against anything from
Badmotorfinger, but it has its good moments, and people in the know
(like us) will definitely get the joke when they hear the "Oh yeah"
sections.

Subject: Rarest of the rare
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

I know we have some lists of people on the mailing list who own
certain Soundgarden rarities. Geoff's been compiling the list of
people that own SOMMS, and Ray was (are you still, Ray?) compiling the
list of people that own the "Pretty Noose" 7" on red vinyl so we can
see what percentage of the total issue we have. These items were
limited to 100,000 copies and 5,000 copies, respectively. [If you guys
could post those lists to the list again, that would be great. If
anyone doesn't see their name on either the SOMMS or PN ownership
lists when they're posted, email the right person and get yourself
added.].

Anyway, I would like to start a new list for what I believe is the
rarest of the Soundgarden rarities: the "Pretty Noose" Limited Edition
Club Promo CD, which was limited to 300 (yes, three hundred) copies.
The disc has the black band silhouettes on the white background, and
it comes in clear plastic sleeve, sealed with a large red sticker that
includes the number out of 300 (I've got 168). If anyone else has
this, please email me. There are pictures of the disc on the website.

Also, if I'm an idiot and there are rarer Soundgarden items to be had,
please let me know. Things that don't count:

	- The Pyrrhic Victory cassette (250 copies), because it's
		a compilation. That's right, it's only a compilation,
you don't want it. It's probably just taking up space
on your shelf. Reduce clutter -- send it to me. I'll
		make the sacrifice.

	- The CDC boys 7" (100 copies?), because it's not Soundgarden.
Again, it's probably just taking up space in your
home. I'm feeling generous and would be more than
willing to help you tidy up by taking the thing off
		your hands.
