I want some socks with the S logo on it. A keychain with the S logo
would be cool too but I'd lose it so what's the point. Um..what
else... How about some Pretty Noose shoe
laces.Or a rhinosaur stuffed animal. Or rockem-sockem robots with the
NTMF machine instead. How bout a watch with a picture of Kim on it
with the big hand throwing a fist at you. Or one with Ben Shepard
with the big hand giving you the finger. Or one of those pens, that when
you turn it upside down, Chris' shirt disappears. Or his pants even.
Um...you probably didn't need to know that.
God, I'm a marketing genius. Yeah right. Anyways...

Here's my addtion to the ' songs that SG should( we would like to see) cover
tunes.

I know that it is a novelty song and all.. But I would totally get a kick out
of SG doing " They are coming to take me away"... for the life of me I can't
think of the 'real title'... I have the single.. but its packed away
somewhere!!! so forgive me!!!

How about rockem-sockem robots in the form of Kim and Heather Mifflin?
Or how about one of those practical joke flowers that squirts water,
except that instead of a flower, it's Ben's face spitting at you and
calling you a "Metallica loving white-trash mother fucker."

How about this... Before I go back to school in the fall, I'm getting a
tatoo of the BMF logo on my arm. Maybe we could market the official SG
tatoo kit. "Do it yourself in only 15 minutes!"

Actually, the best would be SG action figures. But they'd have to be
like the old GI Joe action figures. Between 10 and 12" tall, bendable
elbows and knees. You know, ACTION figures.

burden is ALL over the radio here you cant listen for 2 hours without
listening to it (not that id listen to the radio stations here for 2 hours
in a row "up next we got some new bush, new rock from sponge, and aerosmith"
yuck!). But whenever I do listen to the radio in the car i always hear it.
Burden is also number 16 on emptyv top 20 and on heavy rotation according to
their website.

>could butow be dotu's "black hole sun???".

me and someone else, i forget who it was where talking about this in #somms
the other day. I personally do think that BUTOW will be huge. someone in the
# even suggested that it would be 'the stairway to heaven of the 90's' I
dont think it will be that big, but IMO it has a chance to be as big as BHS
was. In my opinion its the catchiest song on the whole cd, and with the
phrase 'burrow down in and blow up the outside world' how many depressed
alternateens are not gonna like it? Dont get me wrong I love the song a
lot..but it will be overplayed and overplayed heavily once it is released.

With the talk about the Kickstand t-shirt and having recently seen the
Soundgarden shirts that were available at Lolla, I was thinking about
potential Soundgarden merchandise for the upcoming tour/tours. If I
remember correctly, the only SG-related stuff for sale at Lolla was
the shirts, one with the DOTU album cover on it, and one that said
"Tour '96-'97" or something like that on it.

What would be cool to have for sale at the upcoming shows? Personally,
I'd like to see some shirts with the old SST-era "S" logo on them --
like the one Matt wore during the Pink Pop festival -- since it was
brought back this year with the PN video. I'd love to have a hat with
that logo on it.

What else would be interesting to buy? Stuff besides t-shirts and
hats? Any thoughts on any type of merchandise and/or designs are
welcome...

Hey people! I've been reading some stuff on this list about SG T-shirts. If
you know where I can get some, e-mail me. I go back to school next week and
I want some shirts that will piss off my teachers. They don't like it when
students wear anything besides polo shirts and khakis or roper-type clothes.
I'd really like a "Free Kim Thayil" shirt, so if you have one for sale or
know where to get one, just don't sit there!!! Tell me about it!!!

And another thing, here in Dallas/Fort Worth we have only two lousy radio
stations that occasionally play SG. I've talked to some of the people at the
radio station and they haven't even heard of BUTOW!!! So to help me out,
anytime a new SG song comes on a station in your area, tell me about it so I
can call them up and gripe about why we aren't hearing it. It really makes
me pissed when the stations don't appreciate SG so I'm not going to let that
happen anymore!!

Yeah, I know... this has nothing to do with SG merchandise... but I had
to respond. We have THREE lousy radio stations in DFW that play SG. 94.5,
97.1, and 102.1. I've heard 102.1 play Overfloater and BUTOW before. And

I agree with .bug, but personally I would be devastated if anything
happened to Chris or for that matter any of the members of SG, whether
it was from drinking or something else. That's why we all care,
because we ARE affected by him and his actions. I'll never forget when
John Bonham died (as Vasant mentioned). It felt like the end of the
world (and I knew it was the end of Led Zep). And that was only the
first of many "losses" I have felt over the years when people I admire
fuck themselves up. And then, even before my time, there was Janis
Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc. etc.

Everyone has the right to do what they want with their life, but
Karen, are you saying that if Chris drank himself to death, or choked
to death on his own puke, or died in a drunken car crash, that you
wouldn't be affected?

I must agree/back up this comment . . . it seems to me that SG specifically
writes their songs so that the chords are simple . . . for example, all
their wacky tunings, usually set up so that most all of the chords simply
barred . . . try playing BIMH in normal tuning (just change the key from c
to e) and then you'll have your complexity! Their songs are complex, they
just make them easy! IMO, it doesn't matter how "complex" it is, as long as
it sounds good . . .

We've all seen the movie 'Singles', right? Remember the
single-line, pencil drawing the fake foreign dude sketched
at the beginning of the flick? I've always thought a
minimalist sketch of the guy's faces would be great for
dedicated fans. You'd either know who it was immediately,
or be so drawn in by the personality that inevitably comes
through in quality renderings of this nature (like the John
Lennon one), that you couldn't resist at least wondering who
they were. This type of art is not really your style Frank,
but it is beautiful, simple and to-the-point. No band name
would appear on the shirt or poster. Just the UOK or BMF
     symbols, if anything. -Vikki :)

i dreamt about soundgarden once again... this one i was actually at a
concert and they were playing songs from a long time ago (like Tears to
Forget and Hunted Down) and chris had long hair again (sigh...) and during
one song matt was dancing around the stage but there was still drums
playing so i looked back and jenny mccarthy was playing the drums and she
was really good. i got to sit on the corner of the stage cuz everyone is
bigger than me at concerts. then soundgarden left after only a couple
songs and all the animals were being brought onto the stage. i had to
leave cuz there were cows trying to go where i was sitting. it was kind of
cool :)
i highly recomend dreaming about soundgarden. amanda

The only band stuff on it would be a logo or "Soundgarden" on the

Subject: A drunkin' Chris on Stage

I got something to say about this.

1. We all know that Chris is loosing the same voice that he had about 10
years ago. It's changing faster every day. Drinking has, really, nothing to
do with it. He's getting older, and quoting what Billy Corgan said "Chris
Cornell won't be a screamer 10 to 20 years from now."

2. Smoking does have some effect to the vocal cords, yes, you can tell a
chain smoker just form the way they talk. Yes, i do smoke, but I am not a
chain smoker, but I still have some idea on how much a toll it is taking on
his voice. If he can do it like i can, lasting at least 5 weeks without
lighting up, his voice probably wouldn't get much worse.

3. Chris never learned exactly how to sing. there is a right way and a
wrong way, and right now he is doing it the wrong way. If he was doing it
the right way, yes, he would not sound the way he does now. he probably
wouldn't have the range he has.

All Chris has to do is stop chain smoking, and put less strain on his vocal
cords. it would be hard not only for him, but for us, but at least we know
that he would not have to go through the pain of surgery.

Everyone's saying, "Oh, this is definately going to be the next

Subject: ideas for merchandise

well, i got my fan club package the other day with that cheesy plastic
superunk. keychain. chris thought it would be much cooler if they had
metal keychains with either the UOK logo or the BMF wheel.

personally, i think the BMF wheel is such an amazing, timeless design -- a
true icon -- that i'd like to see more stuff. i never got a BMF shirt and
i would die for one.

socks would be cool; the cap i got at lolla is GREAT. (seth, it sounds
like exactly what you want -- the UOK "s" on the front)

personally, i'd like something i could wear to work. a polo shirt or
something with a small embroidered logo.. some high-quality enamel
pins/badges.

tank tops are nice for the summer.

i prefer a nice selection of designs, some small and 'tasteful', some
large and overpowering. i like the hat because it isn't obvious it's a
soundgarden hat -- just has the UOK logo on the front. not obvious.

i really liked the sg denim jacket because it fell into that category, but
$86 for a denim jacket is j ust OUT OF THE QUESTION. i'm personally going
to be blowing up the BMF wheel, transferring it to an embroidery grid and
embroidering the back of my denim vest, or something... no "soundgarden",
just the wheel. (i love that wheel. it's so basic and primal and
iconographic... reminds me of the spirals at newgrange. that's pretty
heavy).

[/me knows she's not making any sense]

posters. i'd love some posters that are NOT just stock photos of the
band. something tasteful, artistic. the DoTU artwork was wonderful imo.

i'd also say designs and logos are better than band photos. this isn't a
cheesecake band. we don't need to see their faces on our chests/backs.
[calm down shroom, you know what i mean ;-)]

i guess that's what says soundgarden to me: out of the ordinary. not
standard. not obvious. they obviously aren't trying to create brand
equity in the faces of the band members, it would be nice to have one or
two repetitive icons that would mean 'soundgarden', like the BMF wheel or
the UOK "s".

while i like the 'pretty noose' shirt i have, as well as my european
superunk tour shirt and the 'spacey' shirt from the 94 tour, i kind of
expect something above and beyond, again, the obvious. pearl jam have
done that with *most* of their merchandise.

frank, how about some limited-edition lithographs? (says the older sg fan
with money and lots of empty wall space)

OK... I'l throw out some shirt ideas. If they are stupid it's because
I'm thinking them up 30 minutes before a meeting.
Start by thinking of the statement that the shirt is to portray
(because most people, knowingly or not, wear these type of shirts to
     make statements)

     1) Color: Off White
Front: A modest font SOUNDGARDEN logo above a picture of the earth
being grasped by a huge hand (if the hand could be portrayed as a
corporate type, maybe showing a business suit cuff, it would be cool)
Back: In modest font "Put your hands Away. Your gonna kill your
     mother."
Statement being portrayed: 'I'm a rocker who has high natural
values. I care about what is being done to the earth by irresponsible
     corporations/gov't.'

     2) Color: Black
Front: Again, a modest Soundgarden logo above a picture of a female
hand and forearm raised out of a desert like floor. (Picture the hand
in the sand in the BIMH video). The hand should be female in form and
     grasping the air.
Back: "There she goes. Out in the sunshine. The sun is mine"
Statement being portrayed: 'I've been hurt by someone and I'm still
     hurting.'

Or, how bout a shirt with a SG logo and a picture of Theodore Kozinsky
on the front and BUTOW on the back. You could spell it out or keep it
'BUTOW'. Ok, I gotta hit this meeting.
     Later,
        Mr.Bunchypants (AKA Taylor)

Good point, Moony. This is interesting. Do you guys think that Chris
WOULD go through surgery, if it became necessary to continue his career as a
vocalist? I mean, we all know he could just go on writing and playing music
forever... but would he be satisified with that? Anyone? Anyone?

Just so I think I'm the first . . .

I'm working on an image that I think would make a great shirt . .

Here is what I have so far:

Back of shirt "Soundgarden" but the letters are like this:

"S" = the ultra mega unknown logo.
"O" = The Badmotorfinger wheel.
"U" = The "U" in the band's name from the "Songs from the Superunknown"ep.
"N" = Backwards "N" from "Superunknown"
"D" = The "D" in the band's name on Down on the Upside's cover.
"G" = The UltraMega Unknown logo again (looks like a S/G).
"A" = The "A" from the band's name on "Badmotorfinger"
"R" = The "R" from the word "Ultra" on the Ultramega OK cover.
"D" = The triangle from the badmotorfinger wheel rotated 15 degrees or so
with the word "Badmoterfinger" and the Sparkplug.
"E" = The "E" from the bands's name on "Badmotorfinger"
"N" = Make it from sparkplugs (I stole the one from the front of the
	wood box set).

I am also trying to incorporate the "O" from "UltraMega Ok", but I like
the badmoterfinger wheel better . . .

On the front:

On the web page, I think caryn gave seth a picture of the
Soundgarden Magnusson Park Sculpture they took their name from. It's a
really dark, awe-inspiring pic . . . It would look cool . . .

			Well, that's my idea,

Subject: SG ideas

I was just drivin' home from my friends house and I came up with some ideas
for SG merchandise. Everyone else may think these things suck, but I'm going
to speak my mind anyway.

My new goal is to turn my car into a Soundgardenmobile so that's where some
of these ideas came from:

1. I want some kind of SG thing to hang from my rearview mirror. That way
I'll have something else on there besides my parking lot pass.

2. A Soundgarden sunshade. The one I have now is one of those silver
reflective ones. I'd like one with a picture of the band or something like
that on the window side of the sunshade.

3. An SG license plate. In TX we have to have the plates on both front and
back of the car, but people in other states could enjoy them.

That's all for now. Please tell me if all of these just suck or if they have
promise.

Hey out there in Soundgarden Land. I am new to this list and I am ready
to jump in and get my feet wet. First of all, has anyone else thought
about magnets for the fridge? I find that to be a pretty neat idea, going
to the fridge after a night out and passing Chris's face. I also dig
puzzles, and I think that the band in a puzzle would entertain...well me!
A SG clock would go nicely on the wall. Not quite enough letters to go
all the way around, but let us improvise here with something in the 12
position, like the SG S or something. And what trip to the beach would be
complete without a soundgarden beach towel? Right, in this tiny town of
Moscow, Idaho good luck finding a beach. Hell, I would just lay on it in
my apartment. I also liked the car shade and shower curtin idea. What a
way to wake up in the morning!

Down on the Up Side is very much my favorite album. If it is possible to
wear out a CD, I just my do that. Burden in my hand is my personal
favorite since the first time that I heard it. Then the video comes along
and it just keeps getting better and better. But tighter and tighter
and blow up the outside world are excellent. They should definately make
it to single status.

Let me know if my ideas seem lame or not. Just sounded fun to me.

Subject: sg merchandise

I know people on the list want something deep or thought provoking for SG
merchandise, but realistically, I think they want to sell to more than just
people on the list. The general population may like SG enough to buy a
shirt or something but not to be considered a fanatic. Anyway, here are my
ideas. They're all for t-shirts..

1) FRONT: A race track (like from the Indy or something) with a bunch of
race cars on it. One of the cars has hit the wall and is now in flames.
Soundgarden can be written on the wall like it was an ad for a corporate
sponsor.
BACK: words "Hot Rod Death Toll" in italic, racing type letters

2) FRONT: The earth with a HUGE pile of dynamite on it (on the arctic
circle, I guess). The dynamite is tied in a ribbon with the word
Soundgarden on it. The fuse trails away from the earth and down near the
bottom corner of the shirt, you can see that it is lit.
BACK: words Blow Up The Outside World with bits of exploded things flying
around the letters, the i is actually a stick of dynamite with the fuse lit

3) FRONT: An old, gnarled tree with a guy hanging from a noose on one of
its branches. The guy is still alive, and gripping the rope to keep it from
strangling him. The name Soundgarden is carved into the tree.
BACK: words 'I don't like what you got me hanging from' forming a noose

4) FRONT: Two bulls butting heads while a matador stands by. The matador is
holding a red cape with the word Soundgarden on it.
BACK: words 'Hard headed fuck you all'

5) FRONT: An apple with a bite taken out of it. There's an oval grocery
store-like sticker stuck to the apple. The word Soundgarden is written
along the top curve of the oval and the Soundgarden S is underneath the
word (on the sticker).

Those are all I have right now. Sorry if they're really pathetic, but I'd
wear them... I'm not known for my really common tastes though.. Oh well.

Erin.

At 09:51 AM 08/09/96 -0700, you wrote:
so,I would like to poll you as to your ideas for designs...graphic
>drawings, weird photographic stuff...what says Soundgarden to you?

Note: Hey Kids...drugs kill.

Down on the Upside Designs:

Pretty Noose:

Inspiration: The old tall tale "The Headless Horseman".
Design: A motorcycle riding into moonlight along a dirt road. It's
approaching one of those old one lane New England bridges made of wood with
a hangman's noose attached to the top. The headless horseman with the
pumpkin head is lurking in the distance.

Rhinosaur:

Inspiration: something similar to the Kickstand shirt of last tour.
Design:
Front: a stampeding herd of rhino's
Back: "Only Deadly in a Swarm"

Dusty:

Inspiration: a carefree southerner walking barefoot down a dirt road
whistling...
Design: A rather dufuss-y looking character walking down a road.

Ty Cobb:

Inspiration: That racist redneck bastard who played baseball.
Design: a baseball jersey similar to the authentic baseball jersey's. On
the front...buttons fully down the middle with Soundgarden along the chest
in a arc shape (similar to existing teams designs). On the back Ty Cobb's
jersey number with the name "Cobb" along the shoulder.

Burden in My Hand:

Inspiration: "Hey Joe...you shot your lady down..."
Design: a female hand holding a smoking gun. Note: if you're wondering
why I picked a female hand; refer to Spinal Tap's artwork debate about
_Smell the Glove_.

Never the Machine Forever:

no design...I just think the song is about time and the image would be a
clock, either digital or analog.

No Attention:

Inspiration: Chautauqua County
Design: An evil looking kid with a mohawk, dressed in an Ultramega OK
t-shirt...carrying a hatchet. Walking into the woods (trees: pines).

Overfloater:

Inspiration: the scene of Val Kilmer (J. Morrison) in the bathtub at the
end of the _Doors_.
Design: a side shot of a bathtub with just someone's head (in a very
relaxed facial shot), arms and feet visible. Smoke surrounds the entire
image. Back: "Nothings gonna pinch this nerve of mine".

Bootcamp:

Inspiration: Be all that you can be...Also; the indian crying in those 70's
PSA's for a cleaner america.
Design: A saluting soldier in a propoganda motif. A tear is falling down
the soldiers face across his cheek. Back: "I must obey the rules"

Tigher and Tighter:

a shot of a spacecraft leaving Earth's orbit. Planets and a prominent
picture of the sun is also involved in this design.

Blow Up the Outside World:

Note: I have a vision for the video of this song. My 'merchandise' idea
would be an offshoot of some visual involved in it. I'm thinking the
keyhole would be the proper symbolic item.

Images: (needs work)

A greyish grainy shot of guy sitting at a table staring at a door. He's
scruffed up and sweating. There's a table in front of him and on it...is a
whiskey bottle and a handgun. The camera pans into the direction he's
staring at. It becomes apparent he's staring at a keyhole. The camera
slowly gets closer and closer to the keyhole until you can see through the
hole to the outside. From a distance the hole glows orange. While all this
is going on... the first verse of the song is playing

"Nothing to seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know"

As the chorus kicks in...the camera slams into the keyhole! Visions of
Screaming People, Fires, and general mayhem appears on the walls of the
keyhole. Everything that is bothering the guy appears on the sides of the
keyhole. The end of the keyhole is black while the torturous demons of this
guy appear before him. Maybe a shot of just his eyes viewing this would
suffice. As the verse Butow is sung....the guy does a silent scream.

"I've givin everything I need
I'd give you everything I own
I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone
I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell and gone
Burrow down in and
Blow up the Outside World"

Second verse:

A woman is sitting at a table in an old rundown house. There's a journal on
the table with the word Diary written on it. There is also a letter half in
an envelope beside the journal. She is holding a pen and nervously playing
with it she's also just staring hard at that keyhole. The camera does the
same thing as above and pans into the keyhole. The second verse is playing:

"Someone tried to tell me something
Don't let the world bring you down
Nothing can do me in before I do myself
So save it for your own and the ones you can help"

Chorus starts up again...this time visions of *her* demon's appear on the
walls. He's screaming at her...visions of her parents...a small child
screaming etc.

"I've givin everything I need
I'd give you everything I own
I'd give in if it could at least be ours alone
I've given everything I could
To blow it to hell and gone
Burrow down in and
Blow up the Outside World"

during the music only break...you can see both of them walking towards each
other in a driving rain storm. <more images needed here> The meet each
other and start screaming at each other, they then slowly start talking to
each other all the while mouthing the lyrics below...finally as CC screams
Butow...they embrace in a kiss and the camera pans around them....all the
while the fires and catastophies surround them.

"Want to make it understood
Wanting though I never would
Trying though I know it's wrong
Blowing it to hell and gone
Wishing though I never could
Blow up the outside world"

The end of my 'vision' is the two of them walking hand in hand through the
fire into the black. With maybe images of the two of them, um *taking care
of unfinished business*. <open for interpretation...It's not the obvious>

well...it was either this idea or beavis and butthead setting off dynamite
inside frogs butts! :-)

..by karaoke and by launch... not by soundgarden, i mean, i really dig
the song karaoke.. what i could hear of it, that is.. the first time i
put the goddam thing in the shitting cd rom the fucking thing starts
skipping on karaoke.. the one reason why i shelled out ten bucks. i'm
going to take it back to waldenbooks tomorrow and they better exchange
it or i'm going to go crazy and wipe out the entire bookstore.. and if
they don't exchange it, i'm going to come home and play it on my mom's
cd player (the one cd player in the world that will play cds without
skipping) and make a million copies of it so i don't have to worry about
the damn cd but it still pisses me off. i mean, the way it's packaged..
in the cardboard with the playing side of the cd exposed to dust and
scratches and god knows what else.. it just really pisses me off.. it's
a neat concept, the magazine, but the way the cd was packaged and that
karaoke skipped the first time i played it is really pissing me off.
but what i could hear of the song, i liked.. i think it will grow on
me... i can listen to it and think about all the trendy assholes i've
encountered in my lifetime.. and btw, when i said that it wouldn't play
in my cd rom but it'll play in my mom's stereo, it probly makes it sound
like the cd rom is the culprit.. but i also tried it in my discman and
it skipped in there.. so that means it's going to skip in every cd
player i put it in.. but my mom's got a really nice one, it played my
subpop 200 cd after i scratched the shit out of it.. and the one track
that skipped was sub pop rock city.. dont you just know it.. but
anyway.. i'm just really pissed.. and i like the shirt ideas that have
been floating around the list.. i dunno.. makes me wish i could remember
all those neat ideas for soundgarden shirts i had before.. sigh.. oh
well.. but im just really pissed off by this whole launch thign and i
really needed to vent.. sorry.. and i cant wait for the bimh single.. im
dying to hear bleed together, i mean its got a great title, so it's
gotta be a great song =) well i'll shut up now.
