That reminds me of a dream I had just last night [one of those nifty
flashback sequences...]

WARNING: POINTLESS RAMBLING AHEAD - READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

I dunno. I know other people have posted their SG-related dreams in the
past, so I thought I'd do the same, since this has really stuck out in my
mind. Actually, it was probably more like a nightmare than a dream. ok, on
with it then.
I went to Lolla! In my dream. It seemed more like an art gallery than a
concert place. People would just walk around and look at the different
stages/bands. There were three stages instead of two. I wandered around a
bit, watching/listening to my subconsciousness' rendering of the other bands
at Lolla (I've never actually heard any of the bands except Screaming Trees,
SG, Rancid, and metallica), and thinking (of course) about SG the whole
time. And then, just as SG would be scheduled to come on, I realize that I'm
at the last show of Lolla, and that they're not there!! Nooooooooo!!! I
didn't even bother waiting for Metallica. I woke up right then and there, to
a stereo playing SG, and the realization that it was all just a dream, I
hadn't even made it that close to seeing Soundgarden (I didn't make it to
Lolla), and I still have yet to see them! Arrgh! I guess I'll just have to
wait another decade or however long it takes them to come around here again
. . . as I said, it was really more of a nightmare. If I was going to have a
dream about Soundgarden, the least they could do is show up! People say
things like "yeah, meet Soundgarden? In your dreams" - Am I that degrading,
that they won't even be in my f'ing DREAMS?!?! They're too busy playing
Wheel of Fortune in "Unkind"'s dreams?! C'mon! Ok, I'll stop now. I'm sorry,
t's 11:00pm and I tend to get carried away when I'm too tired to control
myself. Thank you, if you actually bothered to waste your time reading this.
Both of you.

I'm not sure what the original post was trying to say gregg
(someone telling the band how complex their music should be?), and I do
agree with you for the most part. but I think that, along with chris'
drinking, it is a question of degree with regards to musical complexity.
one of the reasons which makes soundgarden's music so cool (ie.
interesting) to me is their approach to writing music. they have no
qualms over writing songs, or even small parts of songs, in 9/8, 15/8 or
some other weird-ass time signature. they seem more comfortable writing
in alternate tunings than in standard. basically, their songs are
generally pretty different to your standard fare.

moreover, I think that the soundgarden form of complexity (let's
face it, there aren't armies of bands around who can both write and play
soundgarden-type music) is completely different to the musical complexity
you are talking about. I agree that the complicated music made by guys
like robert fripp and king crimson isn't always very listenable. who wants
to listen to a weird ambient/industrial/fusion sort of band who are only
interested in playing a freeform jam for twelve minutes, pleasing only
their experimental ears and nothing else? stuff like that is generally
going to be showy or just pure self-indulgence.

in the end soundgarden's attraction (imho) rests upon their
ability to blend technical prowess and experimentation with great riffs
and melodicism. and while that may add up to noise from time to time,
that can be a good thing too :)

I read in kerrang yesterday that the burden single won't be out
till the 16th of september in the uk, which would be a pretty good
indication of release dates for the rest of the world. sadly, if that is
true, then we won't have the new bsides until this month is long gone :( I
was hoping it was going to be here in australia *last* month, so this is a
long delay. perhaps the band hadn't finalised everything before they went
on tour? I just wonder if bleed together and karaoke (thanks dena) were
recorded long ago, or if they have been hitting the studio between shows.

I heard the new alice in chains unplugged record this morning,
and it does kick major bootay :) the video aired here last saturday
night, and I missed it. but thankfully littlejoe happened to be walking
past his tv and taped it. jamie, stay home and watch it if you know what
is good for you :)

lastly, steve, the screaming trees are going to be touring here
some time in october. I know that that is more non-information than
anything else, but at least you can be content in the knowledge that they
won't be in your town that month.

They werent actually playing it in my dream.. but I was watchin Wheel of
Fortune, and the thinge that was up on that big stage, where Vanna spins
them letters - it was a phrase, and the phrase was Blow Up The Outside

Has anyone found that "Launch" cd thinge with Karaoke on it? How is it,
if you've heard the song? I went to three stores today, called four
more, and only Blockbuster Music seems promising - they said they'll get
some in stock Thursday. And what about the "Burden In My Hand" single?
Did that actually come out in late July or does it really come out in
August? I hope it really does have "Bleed Together" on it, I'm dying to
hear that song. My search for Launch wasn't totally fruitless - I found
the Soundgarden cd book, as well as a 107.5 the Buzz magazine today -
one of the Houston stations - and it had Soundgarden on the cover...
pretty cool.. the interview is ages old though, it refered to Down On
The Upside as Down The Upside and it mentioned a song called Exquisite
Corpse.. sounds pretty interesting. But even though the interview was
old it had a lil sidebar that mentioned Kim getting arrested. I'll post
it tomorrow.. It's a pretty short interview... ok, I'll shut up now =)

Again, you miss my point. I was not criticizing CC for drinking (we all
do it sometimes), but if you have to be blind drunk in order to play
live, then what sort of a frontman are you?

Of course it isn't, but it doesn't mean we shouldn't express out opinions
on it if we want to...

And what has "playing music for themselves" got to do with Chris not being
able to perform live without the influence of alcohol?

> So if Chris decides to drink himself into oblivion sometimes (I certainly do
> not agree with whoever said he is constantly drunk!) that is his choice and

No-one's "affected" by his choices (as you so put it), but we should all
feel free to have our opinions and speak our minds about it if we want
to. The same freedom that entitles CC to go on stage as a drunken wreck
in order for him to actually play anything is the same freedom that
entitles us to express our opinions on his behaviour if we so wish.
Nobody's trying to tell the band or anybody what to do (or whatever) if
CC wants to get blasted to play, then its up to him. I just thought he
was made of stronger stuff, that's all.

It wasn't even me that brought that up, so there's little point asking me.

Amen. Just because we all like Soundgarden, it doedsn't mean that the

Subject: SG wishful covers

From sitting here, I want SG to cover:

"I'm Just a Singer in a Rock-n-Roll Band" by Moody Blues. Chris' vocals
could bring this song alot, and it would be a funny twist . . .
considering how everyone seems to fawn over Chris . . . And the start
would be interesting, kinda like "Gun". They could slow it down and
"Soundgardenize" it.

"9-9" by R.E.M. (off of Murmur) Not only my favorite R.E.M., but one I
think SG could *easily* pull of as one of their own. Give it a listen if
you have it handy. This song's guitar is so "ultramega OK" and the last
part were Stipe says "Conversation Fear" reminds me of chris everytime.

"Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan. I've said it before . . . get out the
leslie amp and let Matt pound.

"Peace Frog" and/or "Soft Parade" by the Doors. Hey, I loved Waiting for
the Sun, but these songs are so . . . necessary.

"When the World is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Around" by
the Police. This song needs to be darker sounding . . . and SG could do
it..

yes, but you're talking about fares from a major commercial airport.
flights out of omaha are traditionally $70-$80 more than anything out

my aunt in renton (almost as coffee-kooky as i) dry-preserves bucketloads of

thanx, vicki...i've used this service before but it's been quite a
while...i've gotten similar results from my friend's database and it
gives me an excuse to talk to him once in a while, so i've been using
that...

however, the $268 above IS slightly less than what i've been hearing from
my buddy-pal...his quote was $280...$268 would coincide with the usual
$70-$80 "piss-ant omaha airport fee" above caryn's quoted rate of $190 out
of missouri...so it appears that the "under $300" threshold i spoke of
originally has been breached, and i may have to consider a seattle trip
while the airline wars are on (found $200 roundtrip omaha/new orleans
yesterday...goddamn)...not this fall though...too swamped.

thanx for the travel advice, ladies (and the lounge-lizard charmer

Hey all,

I just bought that "Launch" CD-ROM mag thing with SG's "Karaoke" on it. The
song's really cool, but the other crap bundled with it is definitely worth
checking out. As mentioned on the web page, there's a cool interactive
interview with Chris and Kim AND some video version of "Pretty Noose"(the
Kaiser Kellar one?) I found mine at Barnes and Noble, but most of the major
music stores have it, also. ($10 US)

Check it out!

Down The Upside

Vocalist/guitarist Chris Cornell, guitarman Kim Thayil, bass player Ben
Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron take time out of their painfully
hectic summer tour schedule to discuss Soundgarden's fifth album.

How was it different in the studio this time around for you guys? For
instance, was the experience in direct contrast to the making of
Superunknown?

Kim: "It was different in the fact that we didn't squeeze the
performances out of ourselves this time, like doing a guitar riff
overand over for two days until it becomes rote. That kills any kind of
natural feel. This time, we kept it from moving into 'Overdub Central.'
We did everything short of making it live."

That "live" approach almost gives Down On The Upside a rawer, more
rougher sound. Was that intentional?
[note: This is the only time in the whole interview where they refer to
it as Down On The Upside. I guess all the references to "Down The
Upside" are typos.]

Chris: "The roughness wasn't a point of making a dirtier, more street
version of what we usually do. It was about getting more accurate with
recording. Something about this record seems more sonically direct,
possibly less larger than life than previous. The kick drum sounds less
like a gunshot in a gymnasium - more like a drum."

Sonics aside, for the few fans out there that haven't bought the album
already, what should they expect when they pop it into their CD player?

Kim: "I sometimes perceive the record as having a dual nature. It
keeps listeners on their toes, and lets them know you're not getting the
same album over and over."

Okay, let's talk about a few of the songs on Down The Upside. Let's go
with its first single, "Pretty Noose." Any feelings?

Kim: "Being in a small, isolated room with a guitar and turning it up
really loud, trying to make it sound right. And then blowing my ears
[Bt after about an hour of playing it."

Matt: "That song for me was kind of interesting, because we were at the
phase where we were just going to demo tunes. So I learned the tune and
recorded it. and we ended up using that take. When we recorded that, I
had walked to the studio (in Seattle) and my legs were really tired.
But to make a long story short, I was trying to get a walking feel on
the drum part. So it probably has a little weird shuffle to it probably
from that walk that I took to the studio that day."

What about its rather cryptic lyrics?

Chris: "I'm not sure. I'd have to go back and check it out to explain
what it means." (Grins)

What about "Dusty"?

Ben: "'Dusty' was very difficult in a lot of ways. But it's a very
satisfying tune to listen to."

Kim: "That was a song that didn't know which clothes to wear. I was a
little discouraged in the beginning, because I had just gotten this
guilded guitar [note: do they mean GUILD?], and I was totally hoping to
hear how it sounded. But it wouldn't stay in tune. After a while, I
was like, 'Throw it away, these cowboy guitars suck.'" [Ok, maybe they
don't mean Guild. But WTF is a guilded guitar? I've never heard of one
in my life.]

Ben: "That's where the title of the record came out of."

How exactly did the band come up with Down The Upside?

Kim: "Chris threw that out awhile ago. We had tried to get other
titles going, but none of them really worked. He brought it up again,
and everyone said, 'Yeah!'"

Chris: "It kind of came around - almost full circle. We're always
like, 'How do we come up with a title that covers all the music on the
record without mis-representing anything?' You're always thinking, 'How
is it going to look and sound?' So we went through all these different
ideas and ended up coming back to that, because it seemed to be what we
were trying to say. It seems to be able to accurately describe the
whole thing as a record. I mean, if we had a really abrasive title or
rocking title, it might represent two or three songs. If we had a
really moody title, it might represent two or three other songs. So
Down The Upside just seemed to work."

Matt: "And no one really liked my idea of Comin' At Ya!"

Ben: "And then there was Mr. Bunchy Pants."

Matt: "Oh yeah, Mr. Bunchy Pants - everyone kind of liked it but
somehow it didn't end up flying."

Alright, let's get back to the songs. Matt, you wrote the song
"Applebite." Can you explain where its dark and mystical mood comes
from?

Matt: "Since I've been in the band, my songs have gotten a little
darker sounding, probably an influence from listening to Kim and Chris.
But developing the different elements, like on 'Applebite' say, is in
keeping wih how the band always changes. When they started out as a
trio, they did weird Bauhaus stuff. So it's not what our fans are used
to hearing, but we wanted to stretch it as much as we could with this
one, and 'Applebite' is a good example."

And Chris, what the hell are you singing in "Applebite"?

Chris: "You'll have to go out and buy the record and read it." (Grins
devilishly)

Matt: "The vocals are great on that one, because it sounds like a
guitar or different instrument other than vocals."

Ben: "It's amazing, because it's placed in such a way that you have to
put your entire head inside the track. It's like you have to be inside
to hear it. It sucks you in a lot."

Kim: "Instrumentally, the vocals work as one of the 'non-vocal'
instruments, that's the best way to describe it. At the very end, it's
like he's almost feeding back and hitting all these interesting
overtones and harmonic things that fit with all the other instruments
that are going on."

Ben: "That was the use of amplification with the microphones."

Chris: "It just seemed like it would be weird to have a song like that
on the album. We were going to try and let the song cascade, so that it
starts out with a simple guitar riff and then slowly builds, and then
all of a sudden two-thirds of the way through the song, you have this
singing part that's totally screwed-up. So I was trying to add vocals,
while still trying to keep it instrumental at the same time."

What about "Rhinosaur"?

Matt: "Okay, I tried to do vocals on that one, but they were so awful.
I was so glad that Chris saved it."

Did your short-lived vocal experience give you any insight to what a
singer goes through?

Matt: "I've recorded a lot of stuff at home, but I've never played it
for people because it is so bad. So yeah, it was great to hear a real
singer nail it, and everyone played great on that tune. Ben does this
great solo thing."

So what is Rhinosaur? Is it some kind of strange, alien-like creature?

Matt: "Yeah, it's a nose sore. (Laughs) Get it? 'Rhino' means nose,
and 'saur', well it's just spelled differently."

Yeah, I do. Moving on, let's talk about "Exquisite Corpse."

Kim: "'Exquisite Corpse' is like a drawing where everyone contributes
to the part of the drawing until you get a final picture. It's like
someone will draw the tail of an animal, someone else will draw the
middle of it and somebody else the head. And when it's done, you have
this creature that is a composite of four people's vision. I think our
albums are compiled that way."

Does everybody always know what kind of animal it is going to be?

Chris: "No, not at all. It just comes alive as we go along."

From: Stolen.Prayers@helix.xiii.com
Subject:

One more question before we go: There are a lot of different
instruments, never before used by Soundgarden, on Down The Upside - like
a mandolin on "Ty Cobb." What were some of the others?

Kim: "We used a Moog synthesizer. A piano. There's some little
trinkets and what-nots of percussion things that we've never used
before. We did a lot of varied trips with amplificationand a lot with
vocals. I think there are maybe two or three songs where the vocals are
sang straight into a normal microphone. We did a lot of strange stuff
that way, that we've never done before."

What spurred on the experimentation?

Chris: "At some point in your career, you've got to start doing things
that you've never done before. It's fun, and that's what we're trying
to do - have fun."

Kim: "It's not like on this record we made a conscious decision to
write things that were unusual. We've always written things that were
different, I just think this time we decided to use a greater diversity
of material."

Chris: "Everyone in this band writes music. So there's always a
certain amount of music from each individual that we use and a certain
amount that we don't, because it might be a direction we've never gone
in before. This time, we've accepted those directions instead of
avoiding them."

Ben: "We just let everything out. I don't see us as having any
boundaries at all. That's what modern music is all about anyway. If
you have boundaries, it's obviously some kind of personal complex - and
f**k that."

Chris: "Year by year and record by record, we have gone through this
process of trying to dial into what we want to hear ourselves sound like
at that moment. People always say that they're surprised by the turns
we take, that they didn't expect them. And I always pause and say,
'S**t, I never expected anything, why would you?' We never had a
specific idea what our records would sound like when they were done, so
why should someone else? It seems strange to me."

Ben: "What I say after every record is the same, 'You haven't heard
anything yet!"

Subject: hanging out with Kim Thayil...

Hi guys & gals,

Yes, I had the great opportunity to meet Kim Thayil as well as to "hang out"
with him thoughout this wonderful evening (8/1/96), the day before they
perform Lolla in San Jose,Ca . Here's the story, and I'm not going to give
you all the glorified details either:-). I will make this one short and
sweet, just how you would like it, am I right?

Anyway, me and my friend were hanging out at this local club, located here
in San Jose. As we are looking for a place to sit -- there over yonder is
Kim Thayil and a few of his friends, so of course I am going to grab the
table next to theirs (and me being a huge Chris Cornell admirer, and who
isn't??? -- THERE IS NO SIGN OF CHRIS). I asked one of his friends who was
sitting right next to me," Excuse me, but can you have Kim sign this for
me?", and he passed over to Kim a old ticketstub
that I always carry around in my wallet from a Soundgarden show that I
attended in 89 at S.F's IBeam. And Kim signed it and he said, " This goes
back to the IBeam, back in 89!!!!!!!" he looked in astonishment. So then he
came over and introduced himself to me. He than insisted that he owed me a
drink. So (of course) I accepted.

So we talked through- out the evening and we went over and hung out at
another club later that evening. So now it's about a little after 2 am. and
the guys are looking for something to drink. So we ended up at their hotel
and still no drinks available, AND STILL NO SIGN OF CHRIS. So we ended up
having a few beers on Soundgarden's tour-bus, AGAIN, NO SIGN OF CHRIS. We
were up til' 6 am. And now I told Kim,"Well it's time for me to get some
sleep :-)

THE END -- AND NO FRIGGIN SIGN OF CHRIS.

i'd like to thank everyone who sent in reviews... i didn't go, but they =
made me feel a little better (except that everyone said screaming trees =
were great... argh, still upset over that) plus, with all this talk of =
maybe a convention or maybe several get togethers... i'd like to mention =
New Orleans... be a great place to go to (if we didn't get shot)=20

for all the legal mumblers on here (not related whatsoever)

i'm in the process of having my 'removal of disability of minority =
status' thing done, so i can go on to college at my age.. any thoughts? =
is this a bad move? i don't really have much choice, i need to have it =
done to get my GED.. then go to a local college.. this isn't suppose to =
be on here, i'm sorry

Yeah Ive got this tee, whats your problem I thinks its great, its got
glitter on it so it is very glamourous and pretty, do all the tees have to
be full on boys' stuff????? And what is wrong with Silverchair, perhaps Im
a little biased being from Australia and all but I like them.

Uh... this might look a bit funny, me replying to my own message and all...
(Makes me look like a bit of a loner really, doesn't it :( )
But anyhow... just thought you all might like to know that the singer from
Silverchair wore the SG shirt mentioned below while touring...
I saw a load of shots in KERRANG! magazine (NO, I DID NOT GO TO A
SILVERCHAIR
CONCERT)

Hope this helps with life in general...

Anyone got that really silly looking SG shirt with a broken Tricycle
as a front print and for a back print, a wheel saying "Come stand me up"
Jeez am I sorry for buying that...
