I totally forgot to post to the list that I got one too!! Actually, I
call her "The Blessed SOMMS Finder." I got it a couple weeks ago and I
guess the reason I forgot to post is the horror story that accompanied
it's arrival. No, it didn't get lost....but....

I was just EXTREMELY excited when I knew it had arrived. I wasn't
prepared for the fact the my husband, who just about hates SG, and a
buddy of ours played golf, had a few beers and OPENED MY PACKAGE. THEN
THEY PLAYED IT. THEN THEY SAID I GOT RIPPED OFF SINCE I ALREADY HAD
BMF. I'm over it now (pretty much), but I was in pure shock, disbelief
and insane depression over the whole incident. Oh, and the boys did
finally figure it out, "Hey, there's another CD in here."
I've been called a saint for not getting violent over the whole thing,
but at least I have it!
Thank you, thank you oh Blessed SOMMS Finder!!!!!

So, count me in as a SOMMS owner.

a minor point, but still : didn't the mailing cost include an envelope?
wait, before you all yell at me for being petty, if we all paid $3.80 for
postage in the US for one shirt, and it only cost him $3.00 to mail it --
the express mail envelope i got my shirt in didn't cost him ANYTHING -- he
made $.80 profit on the deal.

$.80 x 10, that's $8.00
$.80 x 100, that's $80.00

was this a lot of work? YES. was he entitled to make any profit on this?
NO. hell, seth bought four shirts for band members and he paid for them

Dammit! I thought I might have had it. I'm pretty bad at figuring out tabs tho.
Here's what I got for the intro:

Here would be my setlist:
(in no particular order)

 1)Dusty
 2)Tighter & Tighter
 3)FoBD
 4)Blow up the Outside World
5)Cold Bitch (it sounds good on acoustic...trust me)
 6)Fresh Deadly Roses

 9)Spoonman
10)Mind Riot
11)Fluttergirl
12)Overfloater
13)Like Suicide

I know, there's not a lot of early stuff up there...but, c'mon, SG's early stuff
wouldn't sound that great on acoustic guitars. Sorry

Well, it seems that the consensus for a touring partner for SG
is Tool. Nevermind that I suggested it about a month ago
<Gregg quietly pats himself on the back>

Anyway, that'd be so fucking cool. However, I wouldn't think Tool would want
Lolla syndrome, where they'd be known as "the band that opens for Soundgarden"
They are a musical powerhouse in their own right. Kind of an equal partners
thing
would be cool, where they each get the same amount of stage time.
(preferably 2 HOURS APIECE!!! Hey, a guy can dream). Anyway, I think a

Wait, just a sec, bro. Since when does super complex = good ? Since never.
Though complex can sometimes interesting, a lot of times it adds up to a lot
of weird sounds together. Ahem, noise, if you will. Think about how ear
pleasing
FoBD's main riff is...it's based upon two power chords....what's more, one's
right
above the other one...not really mind bending stuff.

Sure, there are extremely complex songs that are popular (Stairway to
Heaven), but
these are rarities, and marks of true songwriting genius in one moment of
inspiration. No offense to CC, but he is no Jimmy Page.

I just think you're off the mark on that comment.

When did CC ever act like a complete idiot? I think that he is incredible no
matter what he does. And to everyone else who got a little ticked off at me
for trying to say that it is ok for Chris to drink, I care about him and the
band too! That is not what I meant. Of course we all would like him to be
healthy, and we don't want him to screw himself up so that he can't play
shows, but that really is not up to us. Granted they are rock stars, their
job is to make music and that in turn makes them want to make their fans
happy with their music. But I would hope that first and foremost they want
to write and play music for themselves, otherwise they would not be happy.
So if Chris decides to drink himself into oblivion sometimes (I certainly do
not agree with whoever said he is constantly drunk!) that is his choice and
should really not affect any of his fans. I don't think that if any of us
got loaded the whole list would care. Also do you really think that he has
to rest his voice right now because of his drinking and smoking? I agree
those things probably don't help but if you sang like Chris does almost daily
for months during Lolla especially, I think your vocal chords would hurt too,
no matter what else you did!

Just my thoughts, no need to get angry :)

I don't think we were actually thinking of a _convention_ convention. I'm
pretty sure we were all using the term loosely as an excuse to gather a
bunch of us in one place. I know other mailing lists have done it. I
personally have never participated in such a gathering, but of the
mailing lists I've been on, somms has the strongest sense of community
and the people I feel I would be most comfortable meeting in person.

>that was the whole reasoning behind the tshirts... so we had a way to

I think the idea behind the 'convention' was that there were some small
gatherings of sommsters in one list member's city. The way this 'con'
would work, would be that it's an open invitation for anyone to go to the
city and meet on neutral ground. Less exclusionary. Safer. More fun.
>
>and right in the middle of the country wouldn't necessarily be the most

Actually, a central location (a mean distance from each sommsters exact
location) _would_ be most convenient. Not for each member of the list,
but as an average. That is, not to deliberately favor any region. Though,
I think the coasts idea is good, since the membership seems to be focused
on the coasts. I also suggest international 'cons'; specifically
australia and uk. Then, some of us u.s.ers might even work up a good
excuse to go abroad.

As far as conventions not being held in k.c., it's probably because this
town sucks. (fun facts for the day: Kansas is 50th in tourism and water
quality)
Hey! maybe we could have our 'convention' in florda. or Hawaii! yeah, rawk
on!

I think you'll find that people aren't objecting to his drinking so much,
its the fact that his activities make him seem like he's perpetuating
some dumb old Rock cliche (ie you're not a "Rock star" unless you a) Hate
all your fans and insult them regularly b) Regularly over-imbibe some
form of intoxicating or mind-altering substances.
Personally, I think his activities make him look like an idiot.
There's nothing "cool" about being constantly drunk, and if you have to
be that way in order to play live, then you can't be much of a frontman
or performer, can you? Don't get me wrong, I'm not discrediting CC or
his abilities, but I do beleive that this ever-so jaded Rock cliche
really isn't big or clever and CC shouldn't be disgracing himself in
front of his fans. It may encourage them to lose their respect for him.

No-one's saying they can't "live a little" (as you put it), but at the
same time, nobody likes to see the frontman of one of their favourite
groups act like a complete idiot in the name of "Rock 'n Roll" or some
other trite excuse for a cause...

I think Susan Silver gets attention because she's good at what she does, and
because she's a female in a male dominated industry. I've read about things
she's done or participated in that don't even mention Chris.

A guy I know who manages local bands went to a management convention in
Austin last year. This guy doesn't know much about SG...anyway, he met Susan
Silver & was very impressed. He knew she managed Soundgarden & Alice in
Chains but did not know that Susan & Chris were married. I thought that was
pretty cool.

This seems to hit the nail on the head. Why is that people think
because Susan is married to Chris that is the only reason she gets any
press. Any manager that is managing two very popular bands should get
recognition. AIC cannot be an easy band to manage(with Layne's reported
problems and all) And remember Kelly Curtis bailed out on her leaving her
with AIC and rent on an office to pay!!! She seems to be a strong, smart,
level- headed business woman that happen to find love and happiness(As
happy as one can be living with Mr. Sunshine Cornell and all those fuzzy
ratdogs!!!) along the way. I have a great deal of respect for her and I
would imagine she has earned the respect of not only her band members but
her peers! And think of the self control the woman has maintained by not
going to Texas and exorcising the red-haired devil that is stalking her
husband! toni

My sentiments exactly. That is what I think we all meant - not a real

seriously, i wouldn't expect too many of the central U.S. folks (of

somms convention '96 in lincoln, nebraska. yup yup. i gots a big ol' house
with two bathrooms and a basement full of musical instruments to keep
sommites housed and entertained. i can cook like a god, too. major
continental air service to omaha (1 hr. away) and partial service to
lincoln. a bitchin' downtown bar scene, the #1 college football team
in the whole wide world, the best steakhouses in the midwest (aside
from kansas city, of course) a rockin' phallus-lookin' capitol building
with a golden dome and a little seed-sower statue on top, two tasty
brewpubs, oodles o' coffee houses, reperatory and community theatre

nah...keep it on the coast. more people there than here...chances are

well, a lot of them are. kansas city has three of the largest and most
heavily-booked convention venues in the country...st. louis and omaha have
some, but not as many...minneapolis also has a bunch. and although chicago

Boy, I am FAR from being too young to drink! I thought when you
mentioned age that you were going to bitch about us old fogeys not
knowing how to have fun.

I don't think my messages have been coming across the way I mean them.
I don't see anything wrong with a person drinking, that isn't the
point. The point is, usually at some point in a person's life other
things become more important than telling everyone how puking drunk
you are going to get (I know, that's an old quote, but there've been
recent ones, too). I guess I thought maybe Chris had reached that
point. I have friends in their late thirties, forties and even older
who are still partying like they did when they were 18. I'm sorry, but
that seems not only sad, but somewhat sick. There is so much more to
life, as I have learned.

And actually I WOULD find it offensive if I paid good money to see
Soundgarden perform and then had to listen to some drunken diatribe
from Chris. I hate to go back to this, but when I used to see them
alot in "91 and '92 Chris said very little, and I don't remember him
ever extolling the glories of alcohol on stage, although I'm sure they
were drinking their share off stage. He always came off as a smartass,
but a very intelligent, sensitive smartass and thats how I've always
seen him. I guess reality really does bite.

I also agree with the people who mentioned Chris' smoking. As people
who really care about Chris and all of SG I believe we have every
right to be concerned with things like this.

Sounds good to me. We could at least do our own northwest contigent version

starbucks sucks, sonics seats are over priced, if you jump in puget sound

are only a database - they don't have contracts or special

is a mainframe that searches for the lowest available fare.
It makes it easier than calling the airlines yourself or
flipping through the Sunday paper, reading the fine print of

REVIEW: The Gorge Lollapalooza...Monster Truck Show
Date: Tue, 06 Aug 1996 16:08:23 GMT
From: muttley@serv.net

I was very excited about this Lollapalooza and have gone to the past
five also. I didn't buy into this crap about this being a
"non-alternative" Lollapalooza....until I got to the show. This was
basically a hick festival....I felt like I was at a Monster Truck
Show. I even saw a confederate flag flying during Soundgarden's set.
Lollapalooza has definitely changed...and not for the better.
Basically imagine a Aerosmith concert...circa 1977...and that was
basically Lollapalooza 1996. Anyway..as for the bands.

Soundgarden: This was my 19th Soundgarden concert...most of those
were back in the 1980's in the Seattle clubs. My this band has
changed a lot. They have definitly got into the rock star posing
thing and even staged a very rehearsed knocking over of the
amplifiers. I'm about as big of a fan as you can get...but this was
definitely a NEW Soundgarden....very rock starish. The metalheads ate
it up and went nuts. Obviously the same fans that were here for
Metallica were also here for Soundgarden. Cornell's solo version of
Black Hole Sun was the highlite. I noticed that Chris' voice is
shot...he sounded worn out and gravely. I'd kill for the old club
days when he was fresh out of high school and had a voice that was
incredible. Think I need to find a new favorate band.

Metallica: Good light show, lots of fireworks. It was standard
Metallica...they have done it a million times and do the metal thing
better than just about anyone. I got tired of the hicks halfway thru
the show and we headed for the exits.

AND HERE IS THE ULTIMATE "SPINAL TAP" SIDEBAR TO THIS YEARS
LOLLAPALOOZA. After the show...at the festival's campground...fans
rioted after the fire department tried to put out their bonfire at
3am. THEY FOUGHT FOR THEIR BONFIRE...A 150 OF THEM. Obviously
Lollapalooza has changed....don't go if you are into the
"alternative(whatever that is)thing". This is a metal
festival...attracting a metal following. If you like the feel of a
homophobic, sexist, racist crowd...by all means go...but if you are
turned off by that kind of thing...wait for Soundgarden to do their
own tour. I'm not saying everyone at this show was a hick, but their
were a lot their...and it was unpleasant as hell!

Hi all,
I'm new to the List, but I've really enjoyed reading it for the past week or
so, and I must say that Seth's web page is MOST impressive!!

You all will have to tell me about yourselves. I'm an attorney in Kentucky.
I've enjoyed Soundgarden's music for many years; I remember when they opened
for Guns n Roses and they really "outshined" GNR.

I think a SG covention can be done. People on the Van Halen mailing list had
a convention this year in Chicago and apparently had a great time (there was
even a hint that Eddie may've shown up if he hadn't been somewhere on
business, so who's to say that a bandmember might not take pity on us and
grace us with his presence?). It would involve some planning, but you get a
group rate at a hotel and some meeting rooms, etc., etc. It sure would be
fun to meet you all.

Subject: amplification: forwarding stuff

someone suggested that i perhaps need to expand on my previous mail... so
here goes:

lots of people take lots and lots of time to type out full, lengthy
magazine articles and radio interviews and mtv interviews -- and that is
great. no matter if it's a bad review or stupid interview, someone took a
lot of time and trouble to type something out to add to our collective
knowledge and share and add to the web page.

i don't see that in the same category as forwarding "reviews" (if you
could call it that) from Usenet. Usenet has, with very few exceptions,
disintigrated into a shell of its former self and is basically useless.
alt.music.soundgarden is the best example of this. it's filled with
people looking for a fight. i have a friend who regularly goes there to
try to start some intelligent conversation about the band, and he
immediately gets flooded with mail from people on this list inviting him
to join us. ;-) (it's really sweet. ;-) ).

it's great that we've had so many new people join us recently, and that
you want to contribute something to the list, but might i suggest that you
take some time andd go through the web page to see the kinds of things
that are really appreciated?

whatever. just my $.02, not like anyone has to listen to me anyway...

Hey List!

First, I'd like to apologize for reiterating the comments by that idiot
cyberjockey on the Lolla Netcast. Forces within the SGWA are aligning to
find out the story behind his comments. Was he just stupid, or was he using
illegal substances to advance his idiocy.

Maybe this could be a job for the listthug? Want to hunt him down and..... :-)

Ah, the reason for this post....

The first decent sounding SG Lolla boot has surfaced.

07/25/96 - Ferris, Texas is circulating in the DAT trading circles. With a
little TLC, the sound quality could surpass the Oslo, Norway boot.
Actually, due to the recent NYC bootleg busts, this show might be the next
SG show to be put onto CD. Watch for KTS to release a SG Lolla boot soon
with decent packaging but the pricing will be ridiculous!!!!

Note: Never, ever, Never, ever pay more than $25 for a single boot CD.
You're wasting your money! 75% of the time the sound quality is shitty and
the packaging is really bad. If you really want to start collecting live
shows...be patient, get a couple boots and join some tape/DAT/video trading
circles.

As for the show itself; I've heard them play with more enthusiasm. The
crowd only responds (initially) to "Pretty Noose". Chris's voice is ragged
on the first 4 songs. Though, WftS is pretty good. He really shines on BHS
(solo). And JCP is short (as a show closer) for some reason.

All in all, Not a bad show. I wonder why they haven't introduced more than
3 songs off the new album into their live sets? Were they trying
(in/directly) to compete with metallica by playing "harder" material?
They've made a conscience decision to become more acoustic/atmospheric with
this record and I for one can't wait to hear the new material live.

Anyone hear anything on a possible Screaming Trees tour this fall? And when
is the release date for the new Satchel?

Heavy Rotation: "Blue (acoustic)" - Smashing Pumpkins, "Suffering" -

First, a amusing thought, then some meat & potatoes . . .

With all the hootchie talk around here, I asked my girlfriend last night
who she thought was the "best-looking member of soundgarden" was. She
replied, "Kim Thayil". I wondered why a South Dakota farm girl would say
that . . . but very matter of factly said, "The eyes and the Beard . . .".
Maybe I should start Hoochies for Kim or something. BTW, she said, "Chris
is over-rated" Shroom.

I asked my soon-to-be roommate (a level headed Metallica fan) about the
Chris Cornell penned Flotsam and Jetsam song. He said he has it on tape
but has to move his tapes up yet. I'll make a wav of it for the page. An
interesting side note to it, however, is that Jason Newstad was playing
for Flopsom and Yetsin at the time, so maybe that is how the bands know
each other (Metallica) . . . "We're not fishing buddies" as Kim would say.

Subject: Like promised...Irvine-Lolla

Hi List!

OK, I am not going to go into any great details about the other bands
that played Irvine Sat Aug 3rd....

Well, having such a great day for Lolla, (it couldn't have been a
better ) Not too hot... skys blue and a slight breeze. My husband and I
sporting our SG shirts- No Fork shirts.. :( just ones that we bought
priviously from other shows etc...We had to show our support of the
best fucking band there!!!!

We arrived in our seats about 3:20pm, after sometime of walking around
and just checking out the haps. Psychotica where playing....:( is all I
will say to that.
Screaming tree's came on next, and we made our way up to the lawn area
just to kick back awhile with some friends that we saw as we were
coming in the main gate. The band was great!!! The sound was good, I
thought, although when SG took the stage, I heard otherwise.

After the Screeming Trees, we made our way back down the hill and over
to the Beer Garden..for some brewskees-:) Then walked around abit more
and then went back to the main gate to meet Terry and Tim=fellow
sommsters! We took care of all the intros and what not...and just
walked and talked and waited at the second stage for the Melvins. If
there was any band besides SG that I did not want to miss, it was this
band. They rocked as usual and I had no disappointments. I was
somewhere in the middle of the crowd, and the thought of Kim or Ben
being around there somewhere enjoying the Melvins as well, crossed my
mind. But I did not venture around to find out. As I read in yesterdays
digest, someone did see Ben, next to the stage. I wasn't at all
suprised...Ramones played the same time as Melvins and it was a hard
choice....but I had already seen the Ramones play twice in past years,
the most recent being when they opened for Pearl Jam.

It was over to the KLOS booth to put in our names to " Win a
Autographed SG guitar" I wrote "Winner" next to my name on my entry
card!!!! I'm still waiting for them to call me!!....:) yeah right!

Well, then it was off to find food! We were all starving and decided to
chow down before Devo came on....it was a hard choice, food or seeing
Sponge play...well, needless to say.. our appetites won out! My husband
and I were just getting our food....and up walks Rikki Rachtman. I said
"Hey Rikki, whats up? "You look like we do....HUNGRY!" and he smiles
and says "You know it!...:)" I could not help but wish...> "why
could'nt he have been Chris or Matt...?"

Now it was off to get back to our great seats for Devo and then SG!
It was just about Dusk as we sat down and listened and (got into) Devo.
It was great seeing them again. Playing all their great songs... I
really enjoyed them emmensely. I had noticed right away that Kim and
Matt and Ben where side stage, smiling and watching Devo play. No Chris
Cornell or Susan Silver. The three looked in great spirits and I
started to get anxious... I couldn't wait until SG played. Terry had
given me her disposable camera that she managed to sneak past
security....So I was hoping that the pictures would turn out due to the
fading daylight....after SG did take the stage, I was able to snap a
few pictures...but not without security shinning a flashlight in my
face every time the flash went off.

I will save all the song by song reviews....and just say that the song
line-up was the same as the Gorge. Chris' voice was amazing!!!!!! I
felt like I was close to being deafend every time Chris hit a high
range note..No Kidding...my ears were cracking....and the volume was
high and the bass was turned way up!. Kim was in a pretty good mood it
seems, and Matt...was drumming away... Ben was doing the Goose Walk and
seemed to be enjoying himself (no spitting)...Chris wore his typical
black button up shirt, black jeans, no jewelry ....and become
shirtless right after his solo version of BHS. I thought of shroom at
that moment, funny enough :)
The mosh pit was not really moshing and Chris did have some banter with
the crowd....dedicating "My Wave" to the Ramones. I was jumping around
and dancing....and just having one hell of a time... to the dismay of a
Metallica fan that was seated next to me. She did not look too amused
by all my frenzy, and my occasional bummping into her legs...but to
tell you the truth....I did not give a shit..and she knew it. If she
were to have said anything, I would have told her.." Well, when
Metallica comes on...go to it girl!!" No sweat off of my back as I
planned to be long gone into the parking lot!!! Hehehehehehe I was not
waisting my time on them, nor was I getting stuck in the parking lot
for hours! Well, during Jesus Christ Pose, I started thinking about
how short the show seemed...only 1 hour :( but that is show
business....So sad as it may be...it was time to go home, but not
without a big smile on my face and a fullfilled heart. Oh and not
without a stop at one of the shirt booths, to buy myself a SG t-shirt!
What no posters! :)~

In closing....as we paid for our shirts, Buzz Osborne was standing to
the side of me...waiting for his girlfriend. It was cool to see him,
and I would have loved to have spoken to him, tell him that their set
kicked ass! but girlfriends looks kill!!! Yikes! (am I dead???)

Well there you have it folks....I tried not to put anyone to sleep!!

WOW and DOUBLE WOW!!

I have just seen an EXCELLENT performance by Seattle's very own POTUSA. =

KILLERS live. Much more energetic. They'd be a perfect opener for =
Soundgarden............

They opened with the above phrase - my favourite song from their debut =
album that isn't even their own, "Kick Out The Jams". But that song's =

if you ever get the chance to see them. Wonderful!

The only downer was the length of time they were on the stage - an hour. =
 Not good. :-(

Oh, and for the Aussies out there - Custard were the support band and =
they were fantastic, too. I'm especially happy as I got a free CD of =
