Scraping the bottom of the giveaway barrel we find
some paper goods. Let me stress this is only for the
seriously obsessed (you know you are obsessed when you
want the silly shit some idiot is giving away).

This package includes 7 photocopies of flyers from past
SG shows, from 1989 through 1992 or so, plus an original
San Jose LottaPalookas flyer (personally ripped off a
fence by yours truly) and a BHS postcard.

Flyer (photocopied) info (for the ridiculously obsessed):

1) SG, Bumbershoot main stage, Monday Sept 3rd
2) SG/Swervedriver/Monster Magnet, April 20 1992
at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium
3) same as above but at the Wilson Theatre in Fresno, Ca
    on 21 April 1992
4) SG/The Big F, Dec. 15th 1989 at the I Beam (SF)
5) Day on the Green with Metallica/Queensryche/Faith No
More and SG, Oct. 12th 1991(?) in Oakland, Ca
6) SG/Helltrout/Fitz of Depression at the Capitol
Theatre in Olympia, Wa on Sat., Sep 14th 1989
7) SG/Voivod/Prong, Feb. 23rd and 24th 1990, in Portland
    and Seattle.

There you have it. Email to enter, name drawn at random,
only the winner needs to provide a shipping address, can anybody
tell me where the blarney roses grow?

Subject: LOuder Than Live +1

I just bought louder than live last Tuesday, and being the huge SG fan that
I am, popped it into the VCR as soon as I got home and watched the whole
thing. I must say, it's not that good. The directing sucked. First of all,
I think the use of Black and White was a bad idea because of how shadowy
the Whiskey is. I didn't like the way he did the same shot over and over
during the "Remember....remember..." part of I Awake. I began to get
sea sick.
The worst part was definitely the butt-rock antics of Jason Everman.
When he was on top of CC during I Awake and when he smashed his bass at the
end of the show....textbook 80's rock moves. Not to say that nobody
smashes stuff anymore, but he just had a certain buttrock feel to his
every action. UGH.
The vids were ok. Is it just me, or did they both look like they were
shot on the same set? Sorry for being so scathing...SG did their part
well...the fault lies with the vid staff.

Not a bad place for a convention, been there for a few. Got to watch
the taxi drivers up there, they will run you down as soon as look at

Hey, no way am I giving up the hunky hubby what I just bided on.. But
I would like to know, is this trading just for hubby or can we trade

Does this mean we must have a tattoo in order to qualify???? And can
we please exempt Shroon (give her the title of Grand Hootchie life

we can do it in age categories, I know I can win that one, unless the

who do I have to bribe in order to win this????

Great idea Toni, can't you just see the banquet tables all decorated
with ice sculptures of each the band members. We can have daily
drawings for prizes like:

The disposable camera that Kim slap away from his face.
The plastic bottle that almost hit Ben at the Gorge.
The cooler with the sign "show your tits". Given to you by the one and only List
Thug himself.
The opportunity to rip Chris's shirt off and then keep the torn prize.
Ten seconds with the band member of your choice..

Okay, so I'm bored.. I'm ready to take off for a few days and the rest of my
traveling party is late (again). Won't hear from me for at lease 4 days or
more.....hey no need to cheer that way.. Jeez, the nerve of some people.. :-P

Yah, but there's actually a song called "Siamese Dream" that wasn't
included on the album. I had a boot of it while back. It wasn't
spectacular or anything, but I thought it was rather ironic it wasn't on

A great idea would be a Down on the Upside vid.

A different vid w/ a different directory for every song... it's too long of
an album to turn it into a total concept thing.
It's amazing the useless things you think of while driving to work.

Subject: Irvine Meadows, CA Lolla report

Hey all,
It's 9:30AM PDT and I AWAKE from my post-Palooza slumber. Although it
may not be all that great, here's my report (in order of occurrence):

My friend James and I got our tickets on the web, so all we got were
lawn seating. If you've never been to Irvine Meadows, this is the setup.
Sweeping back from the stage is the reserved seating area, and behind
that is the grassy lawn area. It's all on a downhill slope (leafy
incline), so everyone gets a pretty good view. We had binoculars, which
helped to see the bands closeup from our perch.

First, we went to the main stage to check out PSYCHOTICA. They were
pretty trippy. Somebody on the list compared them to Judas Priest
earlier this week, but I thought they were more like David Bowie. Their
band lineup was different than what the Lollapalooza program said, but
they were ok. A little weird, but aren't we all in our own way. More
power to PSYCHOTICA for going against the flow and doing what they want.

Next, we stayed on the main stage for SCREAMING TREES. They totally
rocked! The CONNER BROS got down and dirty on their stringed
instruments. Barret kept the beat strong and proud. JOSH from KYUSS
really fit in with the band, more so than I thought he would. MARK
LANEGAN and Josh both looked like they were getting a little sunburned,
but their vocal and guitars were what was really burning up (he-he ; >).
This was the first time I've checked out SCREAMING TREES and it won't be
my last.

After SCREAMING TREES, we went to the second and indie stage areas,
which were a good distance from the main stage. On the second stage, we
checked out SATCHEL. I didn't think they would, but they truly jammed!
They put on an incredible show with some really good tunes. They even
played some BRAD tunes. SHAWN SMITH is a true musician's musician. He
can play the keyboards, guitar, and sing just beautifully. He really had
a good vibe going with the audience. Considering many in the crowd
probably had no idea who SATCHEL were before the set, they were all into
it by the time it was over.

Up next, (and one of my FAVORITE BANDS, next to SG, of course), the
MELVINS!! And did they get down or what!?! Outstanding set. BUZZ is GOD!
DALE and MARK are his angels. Before, they came on, my friend had a chat
with BUZZ, who proved to be a great person. They did a cool rendition of
"GREEN MANALISHI WITH THE TWO PRONGED HORN". Right before they took the
stage (and during some technical difficulties) guess who shows up
stageside to groove on the MELVINS----? None other than BEN SHEPHERD. I
mean we were right up to the barrier at center stage and he was probably
twenty feet from us. Me friend sees him and yells (and he can yell
REALLY LOUD), "SOUNDGARDEN!!!". Ben looks a little embarrassed (?),
waves and points to the stage as if to say, "Don't pay attention to me,
check out the MELVINS." And he boogied to their ballsy beat through the
set. Now I wonder, for CHRIS' BD celebration, I sent him an e-mail
wishing him a happy birthday and saying I would see him @Irvine @the
MELVINS. I wonder if BEN read the BD wishes also and went to see if he
could spot any SOMMSters. Unfortunately, I didn't have a banner or any
identifying marks, but he may have gotten the idea after my friend
yelled. Seeing BEN stageside was great! I saw the RAMONES on their last
"farewell tour", so I didn't miss them at all, even though they played
at the same time as the MELVINS.

After this, we booked back over to the main stage for the special guest
and SG. Special guest was DEVO. They put on a better show than I thought
they would from previous reports. I'm 32, so I was listening to DEVO
when most of you were still in diapers. Hell, I remember what a thrill
it was seeing them perform on Saturday Night Live in 81(?) or 82(?)
(Can't get me no---Satisfaction!)! It was just as much of a high as
seeing SG on SNL. Many of the
METALLISOLDOUTMUTHERFUCKENCIGARCHOMPINGCOPYCATJOCKCONSUMERSSHITHEADDONTKNOWTHEIRASSFROMAHOLEINTHEGROUNDFUCKS
were whining throughout DEVO's set about how, "they suck", and "just
wait 'till metallica comes on..". I just kept singing along, louder and
louder, until I was finally in a couple of those jockasses' faces,
showing them the fury of an ex-DEVO junkie! They finally shut their
whiny yaps and listened to MARK's testimony. He even came WAY OUT into
the reserved seating area when they did "ARE WE NOT MEN" and let the
audience sing a few choruses (Are we not men---We are DEVO!!!). It was
great. After they played, MARK came up to a food stand and was just
talking with people who came up to him. What a human!

Finally, the coup de Gras, SOUNDGARDEN. And what can I really say that
hasn't been said before? THEY KICKED ASS!! The only thing that sucked
was the STUPID Irvine Meadows management didn't turn on the speakers
that were up on the terrace (lawn seating). The only reason I can figure
was so
METALLISOLDOUTMUTHERFUCKENCIGARCHOMPINGSHITHEADDONTKNOWTHEIRASSFROMAHOLEINTHEGROUNDSHOULDOFCALLEDITQUITSORATLEASTCHANGEDTHEBANDSNAMEWHENCLIFFDIEDFUCKS
would seem to rock better due to the upped volume. It was a little hard
for us terracites to get into the music due to the volume problems. I
could hear people talking (not yelling, but talking in a normal tone of
voice) all around me. And once again those
METALLISOLDOUTMUTHERFUCKENCIGARCHOMPINGCOPYCATJOCKCONSUMERSSHITHEADDONTKNOWTHEIRASSFROMAHOLEINTHEGROUNDFUCKS
were bitching (sorry ladies, no harm intended) and whining about
SOUNDGARDEN and how, "they suck" and "metallica kicks their ass". It
made me sick hearing those dorks while I was trying to listen to my
favorite band. So, I again started singing (screaming) at the top of my
lungs (and I'm here to tell you these lungs of mine are healthy ones!)
and clapping as hard and loud as possible in order to drown the whiners
out. And it worked. They decided to head for the head (good luck!) and
were gone! I enjoyed the rest of SG's set in peace! They were THE BEST.
As far as my friend and I were concerned, SG were the headliners. I bet
the band enjoyed Irvine Meadows as a venue the best of the tour. I
didn't see any bottles, shoes, cans, or anything injurious being thrown
up on the stage. This is probably because of the reserved seating and
tight security. I did see a beach ball almost hit KIM and he looked like
he was gonna stumble on it as he walked backwards, but fortunately, a
stage tech came out and got it out of his way before a mishap could
happen. Other than that, the crowd loved 'em. And they loved us! BEN
cracked me up when he started doing a goose-step as he jammed his
low-slung bass. And he did it several more times throughout the set.
MATT lived up to the rep of being the best in his business. CHRIS failed
the vocals test on PN, but what can you expect after a long hot tour. He
did great on most of his duties, but I know how hard those high notes
are to achieve. KIM had me hypnotized and mysticized with his beckoning
call. He had a little trouble sustaining the feedback with his guitar at
the end of the show, but me thinks that was the management's fault
again. NOT LOUD ENOUGH!! FUCKING CORPORATE LOUTS!! I didn't see anyone
in SG drink any booze. CHRIS ended up taking his shirt off (ladies).
Same set as has been reported. I impressed others by calling out the
names of songs before they were played, "Wow, is that dude psychic?".
Immediately after SG, we headed for the parking lot.

This has to of been one of the mellowest concerts I've been to. There
was hardly any moshing. What pits there were were small. There was some
arson involved in a few of them, LOLLAPALOOZA programs being burned and
twirled like a tornado mainly. Nothing like the time I say HEARING AID
at IRVINE MEADOWS and there were cars burning all over the parking lot!
Some asses, were they
METALLISOLDOUTMUTHERFUCKENCIGARCHOMPINGCOPYCATJOCKCONSUMERSSHITHEADDONTKNOWTHEIRASSFROMAHOLEINTHEGROUNDFUCKS(?),
were throwing CD's through the air like Chinese throwing stars, but none
got me. A few liquids splashed on us, but we agreed that they were cold
and that we should only worry if we were hit by warm liquids. Actually,
I got hit with tanning lotion and it was coconut scented, which was
okay.

Well, I suppose I've rambled on enough. My heads kinda in a tizzy. My
wife Ronna wants me to get my ass in gear so we can go get something to
munch. And am I hungry!! So until next time people...

..later...

Subject: rant & rave...

WARNING--LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG POST

carole (author of "people have no taste" post in which partygoers
become violent if they have to listen to real music [i.e. sg] vs.
worthless tripe [i.e. bush]) brings up a very interesting point that
has (lucky for all of you) inspired me to go on a merciless
tirade...fasten your seat belts...

along with instant coffee and "mtv's real world," one of the modern
era's most destructive and horrifying inventions would have to be
top-40 radio. now i'm not expecting a large amount of people on this
list to disagree with this contention, because true sg fans seem to be
more in tune with sheer musical essence and quality than the average
joe or josephine... but i think it goes beyond simply disliking the
kind of music that gets airplay in top-40 formats.

people talk about the mass media resorting to sensationalistic mind-
control tactics in their work (as a member of said news media, i will
admit that editors of major news outlets DO have the ability to
control what news does and doesn't get out to the public...however,
media outlets that blatantly ignore key issues that people hear
about from other sources are going to go out of business because
nobody will buy their product...plain and simple). fine. but let me
emphasize that people who interpret the stories in their daily
newspaper as an accurate representation of all the major stories going
on in the world are just being ignorant. as anyone who has worked for
a newspaper knows, you have hundreds upon hundreds of international
stories that you can take off the newswire and put in your paper
everyday, but space restrictions dictate that you can only have a
certain number...somewhere along the line, someone is making a
decision as to WHAT THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO KNOW. for this reason, no
single medium is going to provide you with a broad informational base to
make firm convictions about any given issue. truly informed people
need to peruse multiple mediums and use numerous sources to get a
suitable sampling.

AND NOW (drumroll, please), my point...

what do people mean when they say "the radio"? 9 times out of ten,
it's a top 40 station.... "i like that new song they're playing on
THE RADIO"...i contend that top-40 radio and radio in general is
continually becoming a worse and worse medium for bands like
soundgarden. it's quite common for pop artists to release a single and
an accompanying album, and it's quite obvious that the rest of the
album outside of one-two singles was tossed together to meet a
deadline. by contrast, bands like soundgarden craft long-playing
masterpieces and are proud to discuss the work behind individual
songs. today, bands are judged by a relatively short yardstick of
released singles...the rest of their body of work doesn't matter. the
people who choose WHAT THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO HEAR (warning! parallel
reference! parallel reference! :) ) are controlling the music
that's popular because i fear that the public is not aware of the
options they have. (i.e. indie labels, specialty stations) and just
like good mediafollowers, true music fans need to break out of the
listening norm and look at other channels--new stations, different
genres of music, library musical archives...anything to get a
different perspective and possibly get turned on to a new style of
music...

now we could easily expand this concept to include not only top 40
stations but all musical format stations as well...any station is
going to pick and choose what goes on the radio, so obviously there is
some quality material that will never get airplay because (as we all
know too well) some people just have no taste. they choose music using
the "ears of the masses."

i was asked last month by a country music fan what kind of music i
listened to...upon hearing my abbreviated response of alternative,
blues and classical, he chuckled and said i need to listen to some
good 'ol country music. i responded that i loved old vintage
country/bluegrass like hank williams, sr., and that alison kraus
(modern bluegrass artist) was one of my favorite performers. "no, i'm
talking about COUNTRY music," he said, listing off a who's who of
modern country big-shots. i explained to him a brief summary of the
history of modern country, dating back to the mid-50's and 60's
melding of bluegrass-style instrumentation with roots-rock ala elvis
and company. he made up an excuse and ran away.

one of the biggest dangers with all of this is that people seem to get
the idea that if they are familiar with what's on the radio at a given
point in time and who's popular in spin magazine, they are a "true fan" of
that kind of music.

EXAMPLE: my girlfriend and i were sitting at a high school football
game last fall when one of her friends came to chat with us. her
friend brought along her 13-year old brother, who was looking quite
trendy in his saggin' shorts and alt-rock gear. i didn't think
anything else of it until my girlfriend said something about her
friend's brother being "music crazy." i perked up an ear and listened
as they talked about how he knows more about modern music than the
employees at the record stores and he reads magazine articles for
hours on end and knows every band that needs to be known about in the
world. my curiosity was peaked and a conversation ensued between
myself and alt-boy...

GROTE- so, you're quite a music fan, huh?
ALT-BOY- (with an angst-ridden sneer) yeah...GOOD music...not the junk
that most people listen to nowadays...
GROTE- (holding back a chuckle) like what?
ALT-BOY- like fuckin cheesy pop music and rap and country...god, i
     	 hate that crap...
GROTE- (realizing the age of the person i'm dealing with and holding
back on a verbal defense of quality vintage country/bluegrass
music of old and innovative rap like spearhead and wu-tang
clan) so what do you listen to?
ALT-BOY- (sensing that i'm out for blood, and switching to a more
     	 defensive tone of voice) alternative...
GROTE- (pretending to be surprised) oh, cool...i like a lot of that
     	stuff, too...who's your favorite band?
ALT-BOY- (matter-of-factly) well, right now, weezer is the greatest
     	 band in the world.
GROTE-	(giving in to the pressure and laughing) weezer? why?
ALT-BOY- (really defensive now) because they're the best...why, who
     	 do you like?
GROTE- (narrowing my answer to bands that exist now so as to not
alienate the child) not weezer...i saw them in concert and
they sucked...oh, i like all kinds of music...blues,
classical and a lot of alternative. i like soundgarden,
     	  morphine, sugar...
ALT-BOY- (looking at me as it i have a live weasel crawling out of
my nose) soundgarden??? they don't have any good songs
besides black hole sun! (laughing in a pretentious little
     	   adolescent way)
GROTE- (grinning for some reason) what else have you heard?
ALT-BOY- all of the songs they have out...spoonman and the black
     	   days one...they're both boring.
GROTE- have you heard any of their other albums?
ALT-BOY- (looking uncomfortable and suddenly very aloof and cocky)
no, the record stores don't carry them.
GROTE- (moving in for the kill) what? i was just at homer's
(regional chain) an hour ago and they had all of their old
stuff! (referring to albums, not rarities) they've
been around for like ten years, man...you should check
     	    'em out...
ALT-BOY- (suddenly very eager to leave) hmmm... (spotting one
of his alternapals a few rows in front of him) kevin!
     	     what's up? (runs away)

anyway, my childish and naive wish is that the listening and
purchasing masses would turn to sources other than popular radio, mtv
and magazines to get their dose of musical goodness. heck, almost all
of my favorite albums have been the result of setting aside an
afternoon every month or so to browse around small record stores with
in-house listening stations and just listen to stuff. i discovered
nudeswirl, morphine, overwhelming colorfast, husker du, the minutemen,
my bloody valentine and big black all in this manner. in my opinion,
this is where a band like soundgarden truly shines. their music is not
very compatable with the mass-marketed, flashy style of today's music
biz, but rather exists as timeless works of of art for people to dig
up in time capsules and enjoy years from now. is soundgarden the last
great bastion of musical excellence? certainly not. there are a lot of
great bands doing great things today, but it seems like more and more
of them are simply getting ignored, and that's what disturbs me most.

good god, i've rambled way too long...sunday afternoons are a
dangerous thing...:)

well...i've got some legal preparations to do now, so if you'll
excuse me... :)

later...

you climb over barbed wire fences and sneak past security in hopes of

your band teacher tells you that in Pretty Noose, Chris isn't using
correct language... instead of "And I don't like what you got me hangign

ending a sentence with From is bad English.

Dear people on the list. I've just saw the JCP video and the first part kind
of reminded me the BiMH video, with the guys walking through the desert.
Anyone noticed that??

Peace, love and SOMMS!!

OK, nevermind. The person who originally wrote about that quote
made it sound like it was a recent one (and with all the old articles
I have you would have thought I would have known better - Oh well).
All I know is he never made a comment like that at the concerts I've
been at, which is all I can base my experience on. And actually, yeah,
I have been that drunk and I wouldn't recommend it either. At the time
I was drinking like that, though, I was not a very together chick, nor
was I a "Rock Star" at perhaps the peak of my popularity. I've never
met a really heavy drinker that was truly happy with their life. I
guess I just want Chris to be happy. Must be the Mom in me.
Thanks Shroom, you've restored my respect (can't criticize Chris
for old news).

Hello all. I was browsing around some Alice in Chains message board in AOL a
little while ago. (Hey - I'm bored and had nothing better to do). Anyway, a
lot of those youngsters (they seemed REALLY young) like Soundgarden. I
know....no surprise there. They were saying how they could have interesting
lyric discussions about Big Dumb Sex and Full On Kevin's Mom. One person
said they bought DOTU and they were not impressed. It seemed like, to them,
that SG was trying NOT to write songs that would be popular. DUH! Another
person said how much they LIKED DOTU. (I feel like a voyeur). All in all,
no interesting AIC stuff in there at all (I know. What did I expect) But
this is kinda cute - someone made reference to the "sexual chocolate" lyric,
saying they thought it had to do with rimming. So a gazillion people post
responses "what's rimming?!". Ahhhh, to be young and naive.

TO CHRIS FARLEY:

I have one for your "Songs that have albums named after them but don't appear
on those albums" :

How about one of the best bands of all time, besides SG - QUEEN. They came
out with "Sheer Heart Attack" in 1974, but the song of the same title didn't
appear until "News of the World" in 1977.

Sssooooo, do I get a prize?

BTW, sign me up for one of those "Free Kim" tees. I think it's a GREAT idea!

C y'all <----that's the Southern in me, and

Ciao babies........

Hey list!

big BIG news!!!!!

according to the CJ on the Lolla Netbroadcast....

Soundgarden may NOT be playing the final Lollapalooza show. Seems Chris
Cornell injured his voice sometime yesterday. The CJ pointed out it was
very apparent at the end of the SG's set yesterday. Note: wish we could of
heard it!

If he's a trooper and they play...they're scheduled to hit the stage at 10pm
EST! IF not, Metallica will be playing instead.

I'll be on #somms for a while longer if anyone w/o realaudio wants an update.

the bad news is true! Due to Chris Cornell's voice problems, SG have
cancelled playing the last show of Lolla this year.

I think its way too early to speculate on what this will mean for the Euro tour.

Subject: me rambling about me..& some SG stuff:) (i wouldn't leave them out!)

ATTENTION: THIS DOES CONTAIN SG MATERIAL, JUST BE PATIENT, O.K.?
hey, i apologize in advance for writing non soundgarden related stuff...
but i just remembered that there is a picture of me on another web page (i
sent one to seth too to be put on the list page but it is not there yet..)
and i think it's kind of cool so if anyone cares to look at me the page is
http://www.mpls.k12.mn.us/south/russian/russian.html
and the picture of me is with my class (Russian 2) and i am down in the
front, second from the right wearing a black sweatshirt and multi-colored
pants, i had hair then too :(. so you can feed into my "vain parade (it
has no meaning)" and look at it!!!!! none of those other people like
soundgarden (fools) and even my best friend emma (the girl next to me on
the left) makes fun of soundgarden (they have no respect) i think i'm the
biggest (whatever that means) SG fan in my whole school (i guess i don't
know how you'd measure something like that though!) oh well :)
o.k.... on to soundgarden... i had this dream where they were supposed to
play at this local club, first avenue, and i was there and i got in free
with a comp, so i was totally excited cuz there was only about twenty
people there so everyone had a space by the stage... and i waited and
waited through several opening acts but they never came on so i went and
filled out job applications in the back (i don't know why..) and then i
heard them starting so i rushed out and they weren't there. it was one of
those totally frustrating dreams cuz i never did get to see them! and i
was wearing this pink dress that i wore on my first day of tenth grade, but
i don't know what significance that has, sorry i just thought of that,
anyways, i've been dreaming about soundgarden every night and it gets me so
much more anxious for them to tour, if they don't come anywhere near me i
will die!!!!!
well bye for now. amanda (look at that picture of me and tell me if you
do, i will be happy!)
"Now I'm listening to my dear Chris Cornell, my fantasy lover my beautiful
rock star. Why do I always get all weird about rock stars? They are all so
pretty and famous. And his voice is so strong and beautiful and I think I
only feel this way because I know I can never have him or touch him or see
him. I did see him once though. At my concert and that was the best day
of my life. And he was so pretty, up on stage. And I'm sure he never even
once looked at me amongst all the other people, but I like to imagine that
maybe, just maybe he saw me and maybe he thought I was a pretty little girl
or maybe he just sighed at the thought of how much I probably loved him and
maybe that thought made him happy..."(pointless quote, by me, on feb. 1,
1995, in my journal for a poetry class i was taking at the time)
