I was at a party the other night and after listening to Bush for over an
hour. I made my way over to the CD player. I changed the cd to BMF and
everyone kept saying "Ivy, what the hell is this?" There were about 35
people in the room and only one other had heard it. (Just a note that the
guy who knew who it was liked me so he bought the cd knowing I liked it,
pathedic eh?). I ended up getting tackled and hit in the face. So now I
have a huge red mark on my face and a sprained finger just to listen to some

Meadow Amphatheater. I will be leaving shortly, I am looking forward to
seeing all the bands (except Psycotica) and of course, I will be
bubbling over with joy when my beloved Soundgarden takes the stage! :)
I pretty much know their set list, and have gotten the latest reveiws
from all of you sommsters (thank you).. and a close friend that
recently got back from the Gorge show in WA. Anyway....I cant
wait..wish I had my somms shirt though, as I will be looking for..or
should I say, "trying" to find a couple of other Somms members...but
without the Somms shirts...it will almost be impossible! I got some
awesome seats in the orchestra section, as this show is not general
admission...:( I should be able to see without any trouble.
Well...better get going....Will post soon to give you all the details
of the California show!!!

Well, I just walked in the door and here's my mini report, nothing as
detailed and good as Caryn's but my head is still pounding, my ears are
ringing and Metallica is probably still on stage!!
Sg were of course great, but I was a little disappointed. They were
very loud, louder than the bit I saw of Metallica (who, even if you
don't appreciate their music, put on a fantastic show, just too much sun
too sit through it though!) but too much so, the sound was distorted.
But more than that was the length of their set, they played under an
hour, probably the same amount of time as Devo (who were a kick to see,
love those yellow suits!) and they only did two songs from DOTU,
"Pretty Noose" and "Ty Cobb". I really got the impression that they
didn't want to be there. What clued me off? Well, how about when they
opened with "Spoonman" and in the backing vocals where Ben is supposed
to say "beat the rhythm with their bones" he in stead screeched "stick
this bass right up your ass!!" to everyone in the crowd! Don't get me
wrong, they played well, Chris's vocals were strong and Matt was
incredible, but they are obviously fed up with the Lolla crowd. It
didn't help that this was Metallica's hometown crowd, even their
fanclub was there pushing their wares!! Not alot of SG diehards, I saw
more Sid Vicious t-shirts than SG shirts!!
Two of the other high points of the show for me was first, when Chris
was playing BHS, Matt was in the back of his drumset raising his arms
up, swaying, laughing and trying to get the crowd to do the same. And
then, right before "Ty Cobb", Chris broke into his spine tingling
version of "I'm a little teapot, short and stout...here is my
handle...."! Noone else around me found this humorous, no taste!
As for fashion, the same as everyone else has posted except that Chris
decided to trade in his black shirt for a day glow orange one, which,
no, he never did remove!! The show ended on the same note, Ben throwing
something back at an audience member who was foolish enough to attempt
to throw something on stage. He pelted the guy pretty good too! Good
show, just too damn short!! I can't complain though, I realise that
alot of you haven't seen them in along time, or maybe not at all.
Hopefully their own tour will be a helluva better experience for them!!

Subject: SJ Lolla

Hi everybody! Just got back from Lolla in San Jose. I'm afraid my post will
ramble on and on. (Now the time the time is now, sing my song.)
VENUE: Let me first say that Spartan Stadium sucks. By the time we got there,
the parking lots were full so we had to park 3/4 mile away. This, combined
with the fact that the freeway signs led us to the airport, meant we MISSED a
couple of SG songs. DAMN. I fail to understand why bands play there at all:
the main metropolitan areas here are S.F. and Oakland, and San Jose is an
hour away. The parking is sketchy and you just gotta pray your car is in one
piece when you return. We had our tickets checked ON THE STREET before we
even neared the gate, plus the bathrooms are soggy and foul. Trying to get
home, the traffic police spun us in complete circles around the stadium!!
MUSIC: Well, SG were great musically, except for a couple of parts in FOBD
when the guitars were not in sync. But the sound kicked (even from outside,
as we were running to the show!) Overall, their mood was pretty good. Kim
didn't look too bored and Ben was manaical and actually smiled a few times.
However, I thought their energy was a bit low. There was a bit of banter, but
if I recall no "good night", even (correct me if I'm wrong, anyone else who
went). Chris did tease the people sitting way up in the third deck: "Thank
you...especially you people in [section] 202. But not you in 207. And the
people who really suck are those motherf**kers up in the box seats. Why don't
you just go home and watch T.V.?" (something to that effect, anyway) Ben also
at one point started saying, sarcastically, "...how could he hit that
girl...?" I am not certain the crowd understood the reference. Which brings
me to...
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: ...not much. Which is good and bad, really. No one
was being crushed or injured, and objects were not being thrown at the band,
but on the downside, people seemed too mellow. I was by far the most active
person in our section (about 30 feet off center stage, and about 3 people
back). On the upside, I was flailing like a madwoman and when I looked up,
Kim was looking at me and smiling. (Last time I saw them, in '94, Kim stared
at me for a full three minutes. No kidding!) I'm sure I stuck out in a crowd
of people who looked like they were posing for a photograph. Plus my long-ass
blonde air flying around. The mob did NOT understand the solo version of BHS
at all. Too stunned. I liked it.
CLOTHING: Chris: black jeans and bright orange T (which he kept on the whole
time -- Doh!) Ben: black jeans and white T. Kim: black jeans and...can't
remember shirt. Matt: could not see the man at all.

Mickey Mouse and Metallica:
...ever notice that mosh pits always spin counterclockwise? Is it because
water flows down the drain counterclockwise in the Northern hemisphere?
Anyway, we went up into the seats for Metallica, and we got a bird's eye view
of 3 mosh pits going, one big one with two little ones in a triangle
formation. I swear it looked like a big spinning Mickey Mouse. Very
entertaining, as were the fireworks and various pyrotechnics. I had to put my
sunglasses on, it was so bright.

All in all...can't wait for the REAL Soundgarden tour!! But glad we went.
They're always worth it!!

I forgot one detail about the San Jose show, and it relates to a recent
thread. In the middle of "Outshined", Chris sang "...feelin' that I'm sober,
[someting unintelligible, but not the usual words]...not(?) drinking...". Did
anyone else catch this, and if so, what exactly was it he said about his
(somewhat public now) vice?

BTW, I've seen Hovercraft, and did not like them at all. Bass (Beth) and
drums were not locked in with each other, guitarist was interesting, but film
show was not (seen that type of thing too many times before: rotting fruit,
decaying animals...all in time-lapse photoraphy). The set was basically one
long instrumental. Sorry, Beth.

Ciao, babies.

Hey, if we're gonna have the guys cover old stuff then it should be songs
that have unrealized potential, not just stuff we already like. While
moonlighting at Exide Battery this summer, I have been forced to listen to
way too much classic rock. However there has been one benefit: I started
collecting *OLD* cool songs for SG to cover. Try these on for size:
"Stealin'" by Uriah Heep and "Jump Into the Fire" by Harry Nilsson. Anyone
who has heard the second song will know why I picked it. There are vocal
parts that Chris could do so much better than the original, not to mention
the music. The first song just seemed to fit the rebellious fuck-you
attitude of the bands early years.

no praise for you! in the 11 november 1995 digest we were discussing
questions to ask the band prior to their first online chat on aol and
this was one of them:

"when do you plan to stage a private concert for the mailing list
members?"

we've been fantasizing about this for a long time now... and you would

Subject: San Jose show

Howdy sommsters...
Well,I managed to scam a vip pass to the San Jose Lollapalooza and Grab an
onstage spot so I figured I would share a few impressions with you on the
Soundgarden performance.

Basically, they rocked.Absolutely the best performance of the day.The sound
was great and all members seemed in fine form.Definately a well-oiled
machine.Here's what I can remember...
Chris was wearing an orange t-shirt,black jeans and engineer boots...he
seemed in a fairly up and mischevious mood, and addressed the crowd quite a
few times..vocally he was very together, except he kind of blew himself out
a little on 'Rusty Cage,...he was a little weak on the next song, which was
a weird
Chris and his guitar only a-cappella version of Black Hole Sun...The crowd
went crazy when he started, then once it was obvious it was *only* Chris and
his guitar the crowd seemed to get really confused...I know from past
conversations with him that they are totally sick of the song, yet feel they
must do it in some form...it was a pretty interesting thing...at the end of
it there was a 'smattering of applause'.He did a pretty good job of talking
to the crowd, harrassing the people up in the air-conditioned
box seats "...what's up with you motherfuckers...why don't you go watch us
on television?..."He also sang a weird little ditty right before 'Ty Cobb"
sort of poking fun at Kim's "incident"...at the end of that song he threw
his mike out in to the crowd.Chris looked pretty good, and was prowling all
over the stage...

Ben was wearing a white T-shirt and his leather pants(seems pretty attached
to those) He was in full form, fucking with Chris on the second mike, teasing
the crowd, strutting around pulling faces...at one point he threw a tennis
ball at Kim...seemed like he was having a blast.

Kim was on the opposite side of the stage from my vantage point, and gave a
pretty-straight forward performance...all in black...

I had an excellent close-up side view of Matt, which was great because
usually you don't get to see a drummer that well, but I could watch his
every move..The guy expends such an amazing amount of energy..it was just
insane..the whole drum kit was simply bending in front of him..he was
wearing this big "Fuck You Crew" shirt with a bloody skeleton hand giving
you the finger, and a pair of black and white shorts...at the end of the set
he threw his sticks out into the crowd...some lucky person has got
themselves a fine souvenir...

The other interesting thing was that at the end of the set Chris roamed
around backstage, still playing weird feed-back shit on his guitar for about
5 minutes...teasing the crowd into thinking there would be an
encore...heh...

It's interesting to see the level of choreography these guys actaully use
in a performance...there where 3 guitar and bass techs tucked away behind
various stacks pre-tuning different guitars and basses which where
perfectly handed off in a seemingly casual manner during breaks...

over-all definately the best performance all day.

Seth, I think the private SG party should be at YOUR place (and not because
I live in Cambridge or anything!). I'll help...bartending, finding lodgings
for the five hundred people on this list, keeping Shroom on tranquilizers,
etc...

Re: more shirts, transfers etc.
I'd love to help design some alternate shirt ideas. I missed the first
round of decision making, and I think, if my fucking shirt ever arrives,
that I will probably be dissatisfied with it. Let's start over...

I think the best bands to play with SG would be um...
Bon Jovi and Hootie and The Blowfish, that way, by the time you'll have
finished listening to all the crap they throw up, you'll be so glad to see SG
the gig will be made even more worthwhile and in the end, you'll enjoy it even
more... Hmm... somehow I detect fault in my plan... if only I could place my
finger on it...

Yah, I know that the Smashing Pumpkins have some song called "Siamese
Dream." As far as I can tell, it's only available on bootlegs...

Other than that, I'm out of ideas...

Right off the top of my head, how about Houses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin.
The song was on Physical Graffiti.

Subject: Kim Thayil is inferior to...

Well, it's good to be back home after a long vacation. I've spent
the last 2 days catching up on the last 35 or so SOMMS digests. (Can't bear
to miss even a day!) Since I was in a foreign country, I got no music news
whatsoever. When I came home, I was shocked to learn about the axeing of
Jimmy Chamberlain and the unfortunate and perhaps unwarranted arrest of Kim
Thayil.
Anyway, I was perusing alt.music.pearl-jam yesterday, and I saw a
thread discussing who is a better guitarist, Mike McCready or Kim Thayil.
Kim was pretty much winning the votes. But a few said McCready is better.
Their arguments were that McCready has superior composition abilities,
Thayil doesn't write much, Cornell is the main man, and other various crap.
Hello? Ever listen to UMOK and SL/Fopp? The songs on those albums are just
completely awesome displays of guitar power and sheer energy. Nothing to
Say, Circle of Power, Tears to Forget are classic examples. Limo Wreck,
Never the Machine Forever are newer masterpieces. My god, is there any
doubt who's better? Why even bring up the question? Thayil rocks McCready
any day. McCready's good, but isn't up to Thayil's ability, skillwise or
musically. Those silly Pearl Jam fans. Just kidding, I'm one too.

I have the solution to our private concert problem. Let's have a Somms
convention!!!! Picture this Sommsters from all over the world coming
together at a Holiday Inn(OK I guess the first one will have to be on
Seth's stomping grounds). We could have the BIG SOUNDGARDEN SWAP MEET.
Everyone bring their SG stuff to show off, trade and fight over. Maybe even
trade a hunky hubby or two. Soundgarden look alike contests. Pageant for
"Hootchie of the Year". Ben's spitting contest(who can spit furthest and
most accurate) Essay writing on a variety of subjects in one hundred words
or less: Why Kim should go free. Why I want to have Chris's baby
Why Matt should bring back drum solos. A contest of Name that
Soundgarden tune( I can name that song in three notes!) A tee shirt making
workshop. Another workshop in IRC for us in the computer knucklehead
catagory. The possiblities are endless! And for the finale a private
Soundgarden concert in the Holiday Inn lounge! toni

Well, there were about 4 songs from Soundgarden's set broadcast via
RealAudio, and then it died. The announcer came on and said that there
would be no more Soundgarden stuff tonight -- he mentioned that
although there were only 4 songs, they made Internet history by
broadcasting SG, "because SG won't even go on the radio."

They did broadcast "Waiting For The Sun," though, so that was cool...

Hey list!

there is a possibility that Imusic (Management) will allow SG to broadcast
their set tomorrow night if we bug them enough. The CJ (CyberJockey) doing
commentary for the LollaNet broadcast last night said...

If you email Imusic enough times...they might play SG tomorrow night

The email address is:

comments@imusic.interserv.com

last nights set sounded very good for realaudio (surprising good!). They
played 5 songs:

Spoonman
Searching..
Let Me Drown
Waiting for the sun
Pretty Noose

then the CJ jumped in and said someone in the SG camp pulled the plug.

Oh well....the person with the most emails to Imusic wins some sort of
prize. (maybe your domain will get k-lined :-) <Note: that's *not* a good
thing :->
