Time magazine was writing bout all the music festivals like Lolla and
HORDE....And under each they listed the so-called "top" bands playing at each
one this year, and under Lollapalooza they had "Metallica, Screaming Trees,
Ramones, Psychotica", And no SG! Being 2nd in line, they should have at
least been LISTED! How cheap.

I was just thinking when I was in gay Paree (sorry no long marks) I went
into a record store and wondered around for awhile I saw a shitload of bush

And all you concerned people out there people out they concerned about
Chris' drinking. Have you heard the little tidbit out him sayin "Tonight
I'm gonna' be puking sick...1/2 a gallon od JDs out your nose sick" or
something along the lines of that. Half a gallon of Jack Daniels can
definately make someone sick. But I know people who drink that tenfold and
are unfortunately alive and kicking. So don't go making calls to AA saying
you are a concerned friend (inadvernt) Yet.
One more thing, Raul, do not think you are the only obssesed w/Fresh

Okay, I had inspiration on the way to work today. Discounting Alice In
Chains as too popular to open for Soundgarden (also too reluctant to
tour, as evidenced by Layne's hesitation to do so (btw, anyone check out
the unplugged CD on sale yesterday? Only 14.99 at Block buster
video.(hooray))), I thought the Foo Fighters or The Presidents of The USA
would be good opening bands. The boys in SG probably know Dave Grohl, if
not the rest of the Foo Fighters. I also think they would get along with
the guys in POTUSA. And Kim played guitar on "Naked and Famous" for the
Presidents. I would be extremely happy to see both those bands in
addition to Soundgarden. Then again, those bands might attract more
frat-boy moshers.
My friend suggested Hootie and The Blowfish as openers. That would
probably produce less of an undesireable violent asshole factor at the
show. Hell, maybe I could be the only one who goes. And the guys would
have me hang out with them for being so dedicated. And then they'd ask me
to hang out for the rest of the tour. And then they'd ask me to stop
smoking crack.

7. Blow Up the Outside World

From: targaz@primenet.com
Subject: John Lydon aka "Johnny Rotten"

Hey, I just found this quote by the rotten one while surfing:

Rotten vs. Grunge - Punk and grunge don't mix, says Johnny Rotten. The front
man of the reunited Sex Pistols doesn't go for the Seattle sound. ''When I
see some dirty old geek in a bloody plaid shirt and torn jeans, I get
depressed,'' he told USA Today. ``I don't want to look like a car
mechanic.'' Rotten uses the words ``sad and worn out'' to describe the way
the members of bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam look. ``If that's an
image, grow up!'' he says. ``Where's your self-respect? Where's your love of
life?'' The Pistols' U.S. tour begins tonight in Denver.=20

Reuters, Wednesday July 31 5:05 AM EDT=20
Copyright =A9 1996 Reuters Limited

Definitely the words of a has-been pseudostar trying to draw some focus to
himself. I speak as a person who loved (loves) the pistols and has
butt-loads of their vinyl, but doesn't share Mr. Rotten's distorted
perspective. What a hypocrite to dis anyone WRT self respect. Here's a guy
who's dyed his hair more shades than Dennis Rodman, had his picture taken
with a straw up his nose, and eschews relationships because "sex is boring".
I've seen him in torn jeans and no shirt, his skinny little chest spattered
with Sid Viscious' blood, jerking and leaping around on stage like a voodoo
priest on amphetamines and acid. Now there's someone to respect.

I used to have a certain amount of respect for JR, PIL was a band with some
good material. However, compared to Soundgarden, both PIL and the Pistols
fade into a blur of low talent obscurity in my mind. I've been influenced
much more by the likes of SG and PJ. In fact, I couldn't tell you the last
time I got out a Pistols/PIL album/cd and even LOOKED at it, let alone
listen to it. SG on the other hand, at this moment, even as I write, is in
the tape deck of the Scirocco, in the cd player of the big stereo in the LR
and even in the CDROM of the PC I'm using.

Rotten's day is over. time for new heroes.

Opinions, comments?

Hmmmm...Last night I tuned into the lolla thing on ATN and listened to most
of Devo..Soundgarden was supposed to come in around 8..so it was 7:30 or so
and I had to make a phone call so I got disconnected. I got on back around
8:05 and went to the site and did the Real Audio thing and....nothing
played. Maybe the Reason Soundgarden wasnt listed in the e-mail some of us
received from iMusic was because they werent gonna broadcast the soundgarden
set. Did anybody else notice this? And yes my speakers were hooked up and
yes my Real Audio works because I tried it out with imusic radio when SG's
lolla performance didnt work.

The other day I went to this site called similarities engine, which is a
site where you give them the name of your fave band and it gives you names
of bands you might like. When I typed in SG the no 1 band i probably would
like was AIC, which is my 2nd fave band. When I typed AIC i got SG as the no
1 band id probably like. I was wondering, is there anyone who doesnt like AIC??

no big deal, cheese, but i'm afraid iowa isn't my state of residence.
shift one big state to the left on the map to a funny-shaped block
marked "nebraska" and there you will find me...in the star on the
southeast corner dubbed "lincoln..."

i understand the confusion, since i went to lolla in des moines and
all, but let me assure you that the lolla promoters would never
consider holding a major festival of this nature in nebraska. unless,
of course, it involved several country acts, a rodeo, a smokin'
bar-b-q and a bitchin' tractor pull...that would pack in the folks...

des moines and kansas city are both about 3 hours from lincoln,
though, so i didn't have to go too terribly far...when you grow up in
the plains you get used to traversing great distances to do
stuff...(like the mayonnaise commercial where the guy is out of mayo
and hops on his tractor to run over to the neighbor's to borrow
some...and the neighbors live like 20 miles away...) anyway...

> Well, maybe this is a new distribution technique.

yeah...it's called the "LAY-ZEE BUTT METHOD"...(nothingman owns the
trademark, so don't even try to steal it for yourself...) :)

brian, if your courtroom demeanor and performance are half as good as
your "lawyerspeak," we're going to be rolling in greenbacks before you
can say "hootchie..." :) i laughed so hard at this whole thing i
about blew my spleen...

on a serious note, i would like to formally announce to the list that
following the decision regarding BRIAN/GROTE vs. OBSESSIVE HOOTCHIES and
the ensuing multimillion dollar settlement, the law offices of
BRIAN & GROTE LEGAL SERVICES, INC. will open its doors for business. all
case correspondence will be handled by our capable office staff, of course,
since brian and i will be difficult to contact at our condo in
bermuda... :)

(this will without question be a first in the legal arena...as a
budding media relations guru and mass communications mastermind, i am
required by past conventions to hate brian's guts, because of the
eternal societal feud between the legal and journalistic fields.
however, because of the working relationship established between brian
and myself, coupled with my associate's obvious legal brilliance
[brilliant enough, in fact, to completely overshadow my total lack of
legal knowledge whatsoever], this partnership is likely to change the
face of the legal industry as we know it)

possible cases i can envision for the near future include:

SOMMS.MIT.EDU VS. HEATHER MIFFLIN
SETH VS. DIGEST-POSTING IMBECILES
CARYN VS. HAPLESS NEWBIES
NOTHINGMAN VS. THE WORLD

(i was going to include SHROOM VS. THE SOMMS DECENCY COMMITTEE, but i
sincerely doubt that shroom's financial situation following the
pending "hootchie" settlement will allow for any pursuit of further
legal action for quite some time...)

don't get left behind, people...contact myself or my esteemed associate
as soon as possible to get your name in our files...quality legal
services are only an e-mail away...

BRIAN & GROTE...THE NAMES YOU CAN TRUST FOR SOUNDGARDEN-RELATED LEGAL
SERVICES...

later... :)

Although there is something to be said for the whole electric based
sound, I believe that stripping down songs to their acoustic basics is
really cool. For one reason, it's hard for a band to do. Especially
a band that really relies on the energy of it's electric sound. I
think that most bands are hesitant to play acoustically because it
requires more skill and concentration. I think that SG is one of the
most versatile bands out there and that an acoustic endeavor would add
another realm to their versatility. I don't even care about an MTV
unplugged... screw MTV... I think it would be cool for SG to maybe
release a side album with an acoustic feel. For these reason's, I
don't really think it's silly. Later, Taylor

Seth : You're a real amazing guy, I hope the list and the page keep going

What am I doing? I hear you cry. Well in fact I should probably not have

a song so here goes.

Yeah, it's over now
But I can breathe somehow
When It's all worn out
I'd rather go without

You know it's been on my mind
Could you stand right here
Look me straight in the eye and say
That it's over now

We pay our debt sometime

Well it's over now
Yet I can see somehow
When it's all gone wrong
It's hard to be so strong

We pay our debt sometime

Guess it's over now
I seem alive somehow
When it's out of sight
Just wait and do your time

You know it's been on my mind
Could I stand right here
Look myself in the eye, and say
That it's over now (it was gonna be Soundgarden but our network)
(is all buggered up at the minute)

Hello

After seeing a few people write a playlist for an unplugged
performance, I might as well add my 2 cents.

(Not in this order, I just thought of the songs in this order)

1. Half - Has a whole bunch of acoustic guitars in it anyway

2. Mind Riot- Sounds really good live

3. Like Suicide- Not the full set one, the one where it is just him
on the 12 string

4. Gun- a cool song that sounds cool

5. Head Down- my fav song, already has accoustic guitars in it too.

6. Dusty- IMHO, the best song on DOTU

7. Ty Cobb- the only reason why this would not get played is all off
the fucks in it. We have to remember that MTV is family programing.
The same family programming that has Jenny McArthy running around in
a bikini. I ain't complaining but anyway...

8. Somewhere- I think that this song would sound really good on
acoustic. I played a few chords of it on an acoustic and it sounded
fine.

9. Holy Water- A good song, i just threw it in there because it might
sound good on an acoustic guitar.

10. BiMH- great song, it sounded better on SNL than the album.

11. BUTOW- I love this song, It also has acoustic guitars in it.

12. FoBD- Why not??

13. Rhinosaur-

14. TDITTL- sounds really good on acoustic.

and a shocker

15. Hunger Strike- end with the guys from TOTD coming out.

Just a thought
Tell me what you think.

I am currently located in the middle of nowhere and don't have
access to getting obscure items anymore. I am looking for one of the
vinyl "pretty noose" singles. I know that a majority of people on the
list are going to keep such an item, however if someone would be so
kind as to e-mail me if they have any information on finding this
little jewel it would be appreciated for thousands of lives!

I like the Screaming Trees as an opening act idea as well as
the Reverend Horton Heat. I don't believe RHH will happen since they
opened for SG on the back leg of the Superunknown tour. (The New
Orleans show was absolutely astounding) I would hope that the Trees
would be very receptive to the idea. On a side note; Mark Lannegan
must have some New Orleans influence in his tormented blues-like
voice. That type of soul could only come from the city that sin
built. If not the Trees or RHH, I would love to see the Melvins, L7,
Mudhoney(that is if they are still together or alive), or Social
Distortion with SG.

SG unplugged; not going to happen, so why bother with the set
lists?

One more passing comment: I've never been the type of SG fan
to be into hootchie girls, but the examples of this rare human form
found on this list are quite fascinating! They are brash and
quick-witted and have an unabashed self-confidence about
themselves. My deepest gratitudes to the hootchies whose opinions are
enlightening to say the least!

Thanks for putting up with my crap.

Hi Caryn,

In giving the lineup for the Lollapalooza event, we were referring to the
online event. Soundgarden does not yet allow live broadcasts of their
performances. They did it once, for a late night television program, and we
are hoping to broadcast them in the future, but for now, that is the scoop
on Soundgarden. No live online broadcasts. Which is why they were not
included in the lineup listed.

From: Aldrich <aldrich@nwlink.com>
Subject: Lolla@Gorge Review

Since I'm on Digest mode I don't know if someone has already posted their
account of the Gorge Lollapalooza, so here's mine.

After waiting about 45 minutes in front of an obnoxious drunk in a Dead
Kennedy's T-Shirt we got in. I was shocked at how it was setup. I had
never been to a Gorge show and the only time I had been there (no concert)
was before they remodeled. It was amazing how they had it set up. There
was a really really tall hill where people were spread out on blankets; at
the bottom of the hill there was a walkway and then it went down a few more
layers until you got to the floor. We put our blanket right above the
walkway which couldn't have been a better spot. When nothing was going on
we (and the people next to us) had fun spraying the people walking by with
our spray bottles. If you walked in front of us you probably got sprayed.
=>Intresting sidenote: The guys next to us wrote on their cooler type thing
"SHOW YOUR TITS" but it never worked :( <=

Anyway, I thought Psycotica kinda sucked. (Why did they put them on the
main stage and not the Melvins???) Then I went down to the pit for Screaming
Trees. I know you've heard it before but they ROCKED!!! Their show was
really awesome. And the mosh pit wasn't bad at all! People who wanted to
mosh got right up front and those who didn't (me) stayed a few rows back.
You could see the band perfectly and it wasn't pushy at all. The Shaolin
Monks were pretty stupid except for this one guy who spun a chainlike weapon
under and over him while bouncing on his back. That and I saw Kim walk
behind during their show.

The atmosphere was really cool. Since I didn't care about Rancid, I went
and won an airwalk shirt playing twister at the Airwalk Tent-1/2 Pipe. I
caught the first half of the Melvins show and then made it back in time to
see most of the Ramones (Hard Decision). Devo was really cool. I made it
down at the end of their set for a good place for SOUNDGARDEN.

FINALLY SOUNDGARDEN STUFF!

There is a Large T in the middle of the floor and I was right behind that.
After a long 30 minutes of setting up we finally saw Matt and Kim walk
behind the setup. And then Ben peaked out of the corner. Then finally
Chris came out and they all walked out.

Set List:

Spoonman
Searching
Let Me Drown
Waiting For the Sun -- I feel Like an idiot, but where's this from?
Pretty Noose
My Wave -- Or My Way as the Seattle PI reporter called it.
Ty Cobb
Fell On Black Days
Rusty Cage
BHS -- Smoke break for at least Kim, I saw him smoking at the stage corner.
Outshined
Slaves & Bulldozers
Jesus Chris Pose

I couldn't believe it was over. I thought they were just getting started
when they played my co-fave JCP, and then they started braking all their
stuff and I knew it was over. IT WAS SO AMAZING TO SEE SOUNDGARDEN!!!!! It
still hasn't sunk in that it was real -- although the ringing in my ears
tells the tale.

Since I know the girls want to know.

Chris-Open Black Shirt which came off during My Wave. Black jeans.
Kim-Black T. Blue jeans.
Ben-White T. Leather Pants.
Matt-White T

It was great duing Rusty Cage & BHS because the sun was setting and there
were a birds flying in the background. During one of the first few songs
Ben gave the Nazi Salute (Sieg Heil) and Crowsteped towards the crowd. I
took a bunch of Pix with my disposable cam, but ran out right when Kim put
the Beer bottle in his mouth and walked off stage.

Quotes:

"This is the first show I've played in a while with my own car keys in my
pocket. It's really great to be home." -CC

"This is a special show, do you know why?" (WHY?) "Because the Ramones and
Devo are on the same stage! That and we finally have a crowd with brains!
You guys get it. You blow Phoenix away. Phoenix tried to argue with
me?!?!? With ME?!?!?!?! But you can sing with me..." (into BHS).

The crowd was so great. I kept my water, camera, and sunglasses the whole
time, easily. I can tell Chris liked it to. It was great!!

Hello people,

I know this is kinda late, but I wanted to post it anyway.

All in all I had a great time at the show. Of course, the highlight was
SG and everything else was okay. If you get a chance to see the Melvins,
just do it. If you've seen one Ramones set, you've seen them all, but
the Melvins will give you some exciting variation.

Let me saw that Metallica broke my heart into a thousand little pieces
and then trampled on them. And they did this knownly. They played songs,
too many (if you ask me), from Load (of Shit). And maybe just one from
And Justice for All. One was accompanied by a pryoshow and firworks.
The rest of the show was a complete catering to the younger 'alternative,
mainstream' crowd. James kept saying fuck this and fuck that and
motherfucker this and motherfucker that. He was behaving completely
juvenille. I thought he would grab his crotch at some point. The kicker
was when he said to the crowd, " I guess you want to hear some of our old
shit" and the crowd, suprisingly, cheered affirmative. Lars (drums)
started playing Blacken and then stopped and James laughed into the mic,
and they proceeded to play more shit from Load. I really almost cried.
They guy I was with was almost in shock. He kept saying, "No, they'll
more of their challenging song, but they never did." So I did something
I've never done before, no matter what the crowd is like, I left that
concert early.

More on SG later

the crowd was *great*???? it was easily the most excessively violent pit i
have EVER seen in my life. i thank the concert goddess that she got me
and chris out of there when we ventured in before the ramones to grab a

there was anyone left.

the crowd was so bad that even if chris didn't have to be at work at 6am
we would have left immediately after sg anyway. there's no way i would
have been even in the last row of the lawn section for metallica.

the band had a great time; i can't wait to write about all the really
great stuff i saw from where we were (but i HAVE TO WORK), i had a great
time, but the crowd SUCKED. (big surprise, right?)

Oh my GAWD... and I thought I had read it ALL on this list. HEY!! Wait
just a darned minute!! What happened to the BRAIN/GROTE vs. SOUNDGARDEN

conspiracy against hootchies!! Well, for your information Mr. Big Pants
Prosecutor, we, the UHOS (pronounced "you -ho's," United Hootchies of SOMMS),
aren't going to take this lying down. Ummm... wait... poor choice of words.
I meant to say... WE the UHOS aren't going to take this without a fight!!
Ummm... we're not exactly sure just WHAT we're going to do yet... but we'll
think of SOMETHING, dammit!! This is your FIRST warning!! Beware the fury
of the HO'S!! Heheheh...

Heheheh... you messed up again, Grote. SHROOM vs. THE SOMMS DECENCY
COMMITTEE... that means that I'M taking on the SDC. Which actually might not
be a bad idea. I'll have to give this one some consideration. Might I also
add that there could be a pending SHROOM vs. SOUNDGARDEN lawsuit in the
works. I'll be seeking compensation for my own personal mental anguish in
the form of sexual favors from the bands lead singer. ;-) More on this

Damn it... who told you?!? Dena, if you spilled your guts to the list

Frogs have been silent thus far, babe... but I'm sure that if I threatened to
sell the little suckers to a French restaurant, they'd spill their little
froggy guts about EVERYTHING concerning you and a certain new MEMBER of AOL.
 Heheheh...
Seriously though... sorry to see you leaving, Dan. I really love that

back soon, 'cuz otherwise you'll miss out on all the future lawsuits. ;-)
 Take care!!

Heheheh... the new RHH album RULES!!! Ummm... but I don't think they
should open for SG again, 'cuz I'm selfish and I see them all the time at my
favorite club here in Dallas. It's too weird to see them in a club one
month, and then the next month see them in a huge amphitheatre. BUT WAIT!!
I do know people who are friends with The Rev. and Jimbo!! Could this be a
way to get backstage?!? Well, it's something to thing about. But I'm still
pulling for Babes In Toyland (even though I'm wondering if they'll be any
different since Maureen has left them). Tool would be a groovy choice, too.
"These are the cries of the carrots!!" Heheheh... ok, any band would be
good as long as it's not Hootie. Inflatable Soule would be AWESOME! I
really liked the idea of hearing a Cornell duet with Chris and Peter. That
would be a complete dream!!

Awww.... gee... thanks!! Heheheh... Hootchie grrls of the SOMMS mailing
list, UNITE!! The LiC's (Lech's in Chris... a form of the UHOS) are alive
and well and plotting ways to get pictures of Chris naked. Long live the
SOMMS hootchies!! UHOS... the wave of the future. Maybe we should have
shirts made up?? Heheheh...

There seems to be no logic in the way he's sending them out. When I
said last week that I didn't like the shirts, I had at that time
received 2. Another one arrived today.

Apparently he can receive mail, he just can't send mail.

From: gdflower@orion.oac.uci.edu
Subject: TX Lolla cont. (long)

Now where was I? Oh yeh, SG's performance at TX Lolla. The band seemed
to be in good spirits. The set didn't seem that long to me but then
again, I spent most of my time trying not to suffocate. You see, before
they got on stage I was in the center and far back. Yet, when the great
water bottle-pizza cardboard fight broke out, I wanted to get closer and
away from the fools participating. So I headed closer to the stage and over
to the left (Kim's side). I still wasn't that close when they got up on
stage, but then my mind just snapped, and I had to keeping going until I
couldn't go any further. We ended up in the front. When I say front I'm
talking '1-2 people
away from the barrier" front. I didn't want to go further because I was
afraid of getting smashed, as I saw others becoming.

I have to say I was somewhat impressed with the SG fans
at least in my section. They sang along with the songs, they danced, and
really looked out for each other. How much of this had to do with fact
that there were two females there, I don't know.

Like Shroom, I also made eye contact with not only Chris, but Kim. This
is not so unbelievable when you consider that I was the only black person
in that area. My companion said Chris looked as though he saying to
himself, "what the hell is she doing down there?" Kim just glanced over
every once in a while. I tried not to stare back to longingly. I got so
overwhelmed by the whole thing and felt so good about the crowd around
me that when they played Rusty Cage I had to get into the mosh pit that had
formed next to us. This not only surprised my companion, but everyone in
and around the pit. I think everyone was too surprise to approach me at
first, then this big asshole tried to run me down with his shoulder.
Thank goodness I didn't fall. After picking
up my broken shades I noticed that 4-5 guys were giving the asshole some
of his own medicine. As I started to leave to pit I realized that 2
smaller women were making their way into the pit so I stayed and
experienced the wonders of the mosh pit. It was my first time in one,
and I really don't think I'll attend another one.

I heard Chris say "This next song is dedicated to all the red haired
devils". I loved him singing BHS, just him and his guitar. His voice was
clear and strong. Not too much energy spent but did do a little dancing
on Outshined. At the end of JCP, he held he guitar away from him and
kicked it once and hit it several times. It was nice to see him not so
composed and serious.

I saw Ben spitting at the crowd over on his end of the stage, but when he
came over to our end, he just gave us the finger.

I couldn't tell you what order the songs where played in, but I was
disappointed they didn't play anything from LTL. They did however play a
Doors tune, the name of which I don't know. All in all they gave a great
performance and people had a good time. At the end, Chris thanks Ferris
for it's 'Southern Hospitality' and said they looked forward to coming back
to Tx soon. I didn't think he was being sarcastic when he said that, but
then again I was in La La land and probably didn't catch it. It was my
first time seeing them
live and certainly not my last. Next time I'll refrain from being so
close to the stage, I think I can concentrate on the music better, from a
distance.

love,
Gail

Soundgarden stuff for a friend. I, for some reason, have a cd of Soundgarden
at Lollapalooza (92, that is...BTW, how come Soundgarden get to play on
Lollapalooza twice? and don't tell me it's cos they're the best band or
anything like that, cos that's rather biased, isn't it?!?) and have SOMMS.
Both will fit on one tape. So if anyone doesn't have these and want to trade
something for them, please let me know at my personal adress, cos I'm not

Subject: fuckinassholepalooza part 1 (sg content)

sign I ended up bringing to the show:
"FREE KIM THAYIL
somms@mit.edu"
(in large black letters on yellow posterboard)

sign I should have written on the other side:
"TEMPLE OF THE DOG
(we saw you, Eddie)"

Lollapalooza at the Gorge, 7/30/96

PART I: SG CONTENT

5 minutes to 8pm, and the exodus of band guests begins their way across the
stage, led by Joey Ramone in a BMF t-shirt. Majorly cool. Karen Cornell
and Peter Cornell appeared to be the last ones out. I think I saw Mr.
Cornell Sr. but I'm not sure. The sun was just beginning its descent and
luckily moved BEHIND the stage and out of our eyes. Chris and I were behind
the second crowd barrier -- the hollow-t set up to divide the pit, we were
not on the pit side. Directly in front of Kim. They started playing this
dramatic-type music, it abruptly cut off. I could see Chris and Kim already
on stage left. C'mon already!!

They came out and went into "Spoonman" which I didn't expect and the pit
just erupted like a fuckin' volcano. I have NEVER seen so many people bail
out of a pit injured and frightened in my life. There were so many people
in the security section of the "T" that it was tough to see. They couldn't
move out because the pit went back and spilled over into the sides. People
were just too scared to leave. It's easy to say that they didn't belong t
here, but it was so benign all day, even during Rancid and the Ramones, that
we were almost fooled ourselves into going down there. More later.

I waited until after "Searching" to hold up the sign. Chris saw it first,
looked at it, looked at us, and rewarded us with a Chris Is Amused Smirk
(tm]. We were psyched!!! And that was great... but I wanted Kim to see it.
So I put it down... keep in mind I was trying to 1) see, 2) take pix, 3)
write setlist/take notes, 4) sing etc all at the same time. People are
fleeing the pit like lemmings. Security is doing their best to move them
out, and there are people who were legitimately scared, but there were also
bozos who thought they could just stand in front of me and hang out for the
rest of the show. *bzzzt* wrong .

[assembled sommsters: "GET ON WITH IT!!!!!"]

So I hold up the sign again, people behind me be dammed. And I see Matt
looking at it, reading it nodding, and then he gets to the "somms@mit.edu"
line, cracks up, makes eye contact with me and gives me a thumbs up! At
the same time, Chris (Mansfield, my companion) at the same time was looking
at Kim and said that Kim saw it, stopped playing and pointed at it, laughing
really really hard. I'm still kicking myself for missing that but I did get
the thumbs up as a SOMMS member from Matt and that was all I cared about. I
folded the sign up and satisfied myself with activities 1-4 listed above.

Chris was psyched. Kim was really into it. Ben was just soooOOooooooooo
happy, he must have had cousins or something, little kids, because he kept
comign over to Kim's side of the stage (and Kim would just head over to
Ben's side of the stage), crouching down really low and making faces at the
wings. "Let Me Drown", and Chris fails Vikki's Voice Test (tm]. But it
didn't matter. They were LOUD, they were ecstatic, they were loose, and the
enthusiasm generated more than made up for what notes he couldn't hold.
Zillions of people sang along to "Waiting For The Sun". Afterwards, Chris
mentions about this being the first show he played with his car keys in his
pocket.

Next was "Ty Cobb", and I didn't even make a move to get my notepad out of
my pocket, hanging on for dear life. I think the showbox version was
better. Not that the crowd needed to be incited to violence any more than
it already was. They are even pushing BEHIND us, and some stupid fucking
woo girl decided to crowd surf and land on my fucking head (crowd surf into
the security pit from one row behind it. really smart, and she's lucky i
didn't pull the hair out of her head.). FOBD slowed things down quite a
lot... and Chris ended with this lovely little acapella scream...*sigh*

We were then more or less prepared us for a really extended and amazing
"Rusty Cage"... Kim getting REALLY REALLY into it, oh man, wow, a guy behind
me yelling, "KIM! go KIM!" I glance over to the left and see this amazing
sunset... over to the right and see this huge flock of birds flying in front
of these very pink clouds... three seconds later they're flying behind the
stage. Totally amazing moment... almost as amazing as Chris making them
open the behind-stage scrim a few minutes later and point at the sunset.
(Venue note: it's an ampitheatre with the stage on the edge of a cliff
overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, facing west. Sunsets are generally
amazing there...)

(Comment on the audience: What was interesting about the headbangers behind
me is that once they went into 'Searching' and they saw me singing along and
knew I was really into the band, they were very respectful of my space and
tried to keep people from crashing into me. Otherwise, though, I have to
say that the crowd was very insular, not much chatting between fans, I kept
accosting anyone on the left side in a SG shirt and asking if they were
Aaron, but otherwise, no one talked, no one, NO ONE, asked me what my sign
said/who it was for. Chris and I talked to each other all day.)

Afterwards, Chris addressed the audience (at one point earlier he shed the
shirt saying, 'okay, now we're equal'), saying, "You know, today was very
special. You know why? Because you got to see the Ramones and Devo on the
same stage!" <cheer>
"Awesome! You guys are cool, not like Phoenix. Phoenix was stupid. They
tried to argue with me. With *me*!!" Fuckin' hysterical! Then we got
"Outshined", Chris working the audience at the edge of the stage, Ben and
Kim trading places back and forth, back and forth. Then "Mailman", my
recognition of the song earning me more nodded respect from Mr. Headbanger
behind me, and then... then... I did the JCP Dance of Joy [tm] in honor of
our beloved leader (Seth I mean] and in honor of my own glee as they
careened into JCP. I used up the rest of the film then.. I could see Eddie
behind the soundboard the whole time, next to Johnny Ramone (nice shiny
baseball helmet bobbing up and down made it easy to keep track of him), and
when it was 5 to 9 and Eddie hadn't budged I knew there wouldn't be any
reunions tonight so i snapped away while going nuts... while the BAND went
nuts... at the end chris is pulling the strings off his guitar, going
"fucking amazing...best...show...ever....", rolling his head around in
ecstasy... kim is trashing his amps... Matt wings his drumsticks into the
crowd so hard they ended up in our section [and some FUCKHEAD who didn't
belong in the security pit trampled a girl who had fainted in there trying
to get to them]... Ben knocks his amps over... Kim headed stage right,
grabbed a beer, and we saw him walk across the back of the stage, in
silhouette, the last image of him tilting his head back, beer in mouth.
Look ma, no hands. I didn't see the rest of the guys leave.

Numb with delight, I grabbed my stuff, looked at Chris, and said, "Can we
get out of here NOW please???". I wanted to be OUT of there before
metallica... not wanting to ruin the SG afterglow. I gave my space to Mr.
Polite Headbanger from behind.... and we walked out, gleefully yelling,
"Okay, everyone can leave now, there's nothing left to see here". We
imagined the worse, running into a HUGE traffic jam on the stairs, figuring
everyone had the same idea we did, but once we got through that, stopped to
buy two caps, and headed for the exit/entrance, we realized that nope, they
were just heading to the food court. We found our car right away (helped to
1) remember what the row # was and 2) park next to a camper), changed
clothes/shoes and were on our way inside of 10 minutes -- our goal was to be
out of the parking lot before Metallica came onstage. (apparently they were
still in LA being interviewed by KISW in Seattle at 9:30 pm... that's
respect for your audience....) A fucking HUGE full moon guarded us on our
way home through the mountains.... and to make things even MORE awesome,
there was a parking space on the block in front of our building when we got
home!!!

Subject: fuckingassholepalooza part II (minimal sg content)

PART II: THE REST OF THE DAY (WARNING: MINIMAL SG CONTENT [but still worth
reading! really!]

Stupid quote of the day:
anonymous drunkass fan: "how many more bands until soundgarden??"
me: "two more"
adf: "who's next?"
me: "the ramones!!"
adf: "who???"

Chris and I pulled into the parking lot about 2pm. We were supposed to meet
Bonnie & Tim at the Versateller between 2 and 2:30. The parking lot was
full of Metallifans; we're getting attitude already. Chris mentions how he
wanted to make a shirt that read "METALLICA FANS SUCK". I'm wishing I had a
fork, since I'm dressed for the weather, no SG shirt between the two of us.
We load up, smear sunscreen all over ourselves (Aaron, you should have
shouted over to me and I'd have tossed you the bottle!), and made our way
into the Gorge. They barely searched; we could have brought a fuckin' VIDEO
camera in (security: 'no cameras, right?' me: 'no, no cameras'). We walked
past the second stage and through the midway, camped out in the shade at the
cash machine until 2:30, and then made our way down to the main stage to see
screaming trees.

No one was down front, really. Most people headed for prime space on the
terraces first thing. We were standing behind a row of people at the back
barrier, and then after the Trees (fuckin' awesome!!! they played their
hearts out... they're from Ellensburg, which makes them locals (about 41
miles from the Gorge)) people moved so we grabbed spaces at the barrier.
Our plan was, see Screaming Trees, then see the Melvins at the second stage,
then head back for ramones/devo/sg. We had such GREAT spots that I just
didn't want to move. So I go to Chris, "um, i really hate to leave here..."
chris goes, "me too," so we stayed!

It was sunny and HOT -- go look at a map and find George, Washington. IN
the middle of the DESERT of eastern Washington, dry heat, on the Columbia
River, just AMAZING scenery. Of course we saw that for about five minutes
while walking down to the stage because we were so close. Whatever. This
was the first concert I've ever been to where a cloud was getting applause
(still hot, but no sun).

Shaolin Monks were, well, ya know, whatever. And Rancid were so boring I
turned my back and read the Lolla magazine. *yawn*. I did see Ben around
the soundboard just before Rancid, but he wisely bailed out before it
started. If you want to know why music today sucks so badly, here's an example:
rancid lead singer: "how many people here have never seen us before?"
[majority raise hands]
rancid singer: "how many of you would come see us again?"
[most raise hands except our party]
my only consolation is that I knew the Ramones were on immediately
afterwards and would fuckin' blow their asses away. Only interesting point
was when they dedicated a song to some chick from Silver Lake and to "Eddie
and Beth, from Seattle." Chris and I exchange glances. We only know one
Eddie and Beth from Seattle. "Why???" Chris asks. Oh well. We had a
feeling he'd be here... mr. cornell peeks out toward the end of the set.
The binoculars begin to become a worthwhile investment.

I see the pit emptying out and I get that familiar itch to be CLOSER. So I
run over to check things out. Sure enough, space at the side of the "T". I
motion to chris and he comes over. We immediately get the hose blast. And
again. And again. The pit isn't even in the sun any more. This is clearly
not going to be fun, but we already lost our places. Fuck. Nevertheless,
we go back to where we were and stand behind the people that look most
likely to leave soon. We can still see *great*.

"1-2-3-4!" The Ramones walk on to the usual "The Good, The Bad, and the
Ugly" music. Even Joey didn't wear a leather jacket today. Do I have to
say that they were great? Can I mention how Matt Cameron planted himself
very visibly on the side of stage left to watch the show, bopping, playing
air drums, the whole time? Joey dedicates "Blitzkrieg Bop" to Soundgarden,
"We wouldn't be here without them." I see Kim with an attractive female in
a flowered dress (go KIM! ;-) ) behind the soundboard. Jeez, there was
practically a SG traffic jam during the Ramones: Matt in the stage left
corner. Chris comes out the same side and can't find room. He walks to the
right side. A few minutes later, Chris and Ben walk out from the right side
and are intersected by Kim and friend right next to Matt. It was
distracting; but it's not like I haven't seen the Ramones before! (Personal
to Dena: during all of this, I will mention that at one point Matt turned
around to look at his kit and bent over with his butt facing the audience,
wearing these cute little black-and-red basketball shorts... i whipped out
the binoculars just for you, babe)

So I fully admit I was more interested in who was hanging out side-of-stage.
Okay. I will mention that I was still singing and dancing along to the show
while doing so and participating in various crowd response sections.
Anyway, i'm checking out stage right and I see this woman who looks very
familiar... like Beth Liebling familar? and she's with a guy in a tan
shirt... baseball helmet... with a SUPER 8 video camera...and I turn to
chris and calmly go, "I THINK EDDIE'S HERE!!!!!! LOOK!" [you know you're
REALLY obsessed with a band when you can recognize members incognito by
their video taping equipment] and sure enough, there was Eddie V., clean
shaven, hair tucked under a san diego baseball helmet, filming the Ramones
set and getting into it big time. There's really no way you would have seen
him unless you figured out it was him and had binoculars (which we did). It
was really cool.

Devo is next, and in the interim I hold up the sign trying to find stray
SOMMS people. We manage to reclaim 1 1/2 spaces at the barrier which
promptly turned into two spaces. Cool. So Devo comes on stage... earlier
that day I was trying to figure out if I'd even seen them in the good old
days... and I think I did once, opening for Blondie... but as they start
playing it suddenly dawns on me: Devo were *never* a live band! I have
this live EP... and boy does it suck. But they were still cool. I was
wondering if Jerry Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh were going to do the whole
schtick... and they did... and it worked! It was good! And they dragged
out all the hits, including "Girl U Want" as the second song. SG were all
there... I could only really see Matt (again)... and Eddie was there too,
talking to Johnny Ramone on stage right the whole time. I was surprised how
many people in the audience really knew the songs or who Devo were. Wow.
About as surprising as the crowd down front chanting 'hey ho, let's go'
before the Ramones came on.....

Oh, have I mentioned that we attended lolla from 2pm onward and didn't spend
one dollar aside from two SG caps? Two bottles of water, a collection of
fruit (grapes, apples, nectarines), a power bar and two juice boxes
sustained us until we hit Ellensburg and pigged out at Taco Bell at around 10pm.

PHOTOGRAPHIC UPDATE:

I already know the pictures are amazing. I also have shots of screaming
trees, ramones, devo, and i'm gonna blow the ramones ones up to try to get
closeups of matt. I missed the deadline today, I promise to get them in
tomorrow so I can get them on Friday and scan them on the weekend.... I'll
give seth the Sg related ones and the others will be on my web page... I'll
let ya know when that happens.

PERSONAL TO MATT CAMERON:

Who were all those people who wouldn't let you watch the Ramones in
peace???? Damn!

Aloha sommsters and sommettes-

I have no desire to contribute to the endless debate of Do-Nothingman (whom
I liked, and used to write to, back when he existed), except to ask one
question:
Dear Miss Manners,
My check was CASHED and returned to me in MAY, yes MAY and I still have
received no shirt, crappy graphics or otherwise...pray tell, am i allowed
to be pissed yet? Please, I'd appreciate it if someone else would TELL me
how to FEEL about this! And while yr at it, give Seth a hard time for
sympathizing with me! Yeah!
- -confused in cambridge

If I ever get my shirt, I'll probably sell it right off to whomever emails
me first. I'm picky about fonts (sorry...I'm a graphic designer), and if I
remember correctly (it's been so long now...) the graphic had a specific
nostalgic label gun (did those have a name?) look to it that another font
couldn't possibly compare to... >sigh<

>I'd kinda like to see some female bands up
>there. Any suggestions, people? BABES IN TOYLAND... I'd adore to see Babes
>and SG together!!!!!!!!

shroom, yr brilliant and you have good taste. (Of course I knew that already)
SOUNDGARDEN and BABES IN TOYLAND... 1996!!!
I could deal with that.
I wish I could think of some others, but there's a real dearth of women
rockers lately. I mean, good ones, that is. Throwing Muses are great, but
they wouldn't go with SG well (except on my mix tapes, but that's just me.
I tend to combine things like SG, Dead Can Dance, the Pixies,
Uzeda--obscure Italian female-fronted hardcore band---HEY they could open
for SG!...etc).

>well.. secondly, who is your favorite member of soundgarden and why?

I must admit I have a weakness for bluesy voices that screech well. They're
far too rare. And to quote our resident Chris expert once more:
"Let's face it... the man could have a whole head
of lettuce stuck in his mouth, and he'd still be drop-dead
gorgeous."

...an interesting observation. Sounds...healthy.
But really....Chris' voice would be wasted without such a perfect band.
They're so tight. It knox my sox off. (dontcha luv trendy misspellings?)

p.s. I haven't posted in months, maybe no one remembers me, but I've been
lurking faithfully and you guys continue to entertain...muchas gracias.

Subject: .....like a blister in the sun

Okay,

What can I tell you that Caryn hasn't already? First of all, I FORGOT
SUNSCREEN!!! That's right folks, I spent 9 hours and 47 minutes in the hot
dessert sun without sunscreen. And yes, I could feel the first few blisters
forming on my way home (A world land speed record I think). I too stopped in
Ellensberg, but not at Taco Bell. I stopped at Texaco instead for gas and
more water. And, unlike Caryn, I lost my car in the nondescript Gorge parking
lot all because a few who parked by me left and some vendors were parked
there loading up their very large vans, thus hiding my damn car. It was
horrendous. It took all of 45 minutes of wandering untill I saw the light
that is my vehicle. The vendors did give me a bottle of water and a few beers
for hiding my car when I told them the story.

Anyways, The Show: I was in the left corer on the inside of the T barricade
in the pit, so at my back and side was a barricade. Not wanting to lose my
position for Soundgarden, I stayed there from about 12:30 in the afternoon
on. I suffered through Judas Priest, I mean Psychotica. Next, came The
Screaming Trees, who were amazing, as always. I almost lost my voice singing
along with Mark. They only played songs off of Sweet Oblivion and Dust,
though. The Monks were the Monks. Rancid? They sure thought they were the
shit. "Thought" being the operative word. Ramones were great, and this being
the last opportunity to see them, I missed the Melvins, who are always great
live. Devo was cool. They sounded pretty good too. They must have been hot in
their yellow suits though. And finally Soundgarden. Can I say FUCKING
INCREDIBLE!?!?!? Every one in the band was in high spirits. And I amazed
those in attendance around me when I told them the song they were going to
play next. Thanx to everyone for posting the setlist. :) The whole band was
really into the show, too. I'm surprised they didn't make any Metallica
comments. They knew that it was (almost) a hometown crowd, so they didn't
really need to. I noticed 2 little girls backstage who were probably between
the ages of 5 and 7 dancing away during JCP. Corruption of the young and
innocent, always a good thing. :) And good ol' Ben was in a chipper mood, to
say the least. Among his antics, I saw a Devo impersonation, holding his bass
like a gun and shooting people with it (THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE KIM THAYIL
MERCENARY SQUAD!), lifting his arm up with a limp wrist towards the people in
the pit, and holding his bass in an upright position, masterbating it, then
spitting water out of his mouth in the air at climax. Cameras were allowed,
so I used 3 rolls of film, only the roll of S.F.W. hasn't been developed yet.
And the lens was steaming up, so the pictures taken when my camera was on for
a time are hazy. But a few turned out pretty good. And they only searched my
food when going through my pack, so I could have brought in video equipment
and an assault rifle or two. I left right after Metallifuck. Some Metallica
fans had actually made shirts saying "Metallifuck". I saw Caryn behind me and
to my left, but by the time I got over there, she was gone. FOILED AGAIN!

Subject: Surfers and Throwers

Oh yeah, sue the bastards!!! I saw multiple people that were WAY too big and
heavy trying to surf. And alot of surfers kicking and trying to stand. Or
jumping off either people or barricades. There wasn't nearly enough security
guards in the "T". I saw so many people who were surfing landing on people in
the "T" who were walking out or just on the ground. People were also jumping
from the barricade onto the people in the pit. I grabbed one guy who tried to
climb over me and threw him onto the cement. The prick. The security guard
ruffed him up while escorting him out too. I wish I had my billy club,
damnit.

There were no pizza plates being thrown, or at least that I saw. But some
fucking pantywast who can't get it up threw an almost full 1.5 litre Gatorade
bottle and hit me in the side of the head. I wish I could get my hands on
that bastard, then he would know pain and suffering. Plastic cups and bottles
were also a popular item in the throwing department. Most of which were
empty. Most throwers are smart enough to realize that when it's damn hot, you
don't throw water away.

Howdy,

Soundgarden has covered other artists many times in their career. What songs
would you want to see SG cover, and why?

Personally, I would like to see them do "Walk With Me" by The Tea Party.
Every time I listen to that song I imagine that Chris would sound REALLY good
singing it. The vocals in the song just seem to fit his singing style.

------------------------------

From: ThNrthFace@aol.com
Subject: Opening act.

Who I would like to see open for Soundgarden:

The Tea Party: they are SO incredibly amazing live. I nearly shit my pants
thinking about how good they are.

A double bill with Pearl Jam. Need I say more?

Tool: every time that I've seen them has been a treat. Maybe Layne will sing
Opiate with them like he did at the show in Bremerton?

The Reverend Horton Heat: although another tour with SG is unlikely, I can
dream can't I?

The Supersuckers: They can play an AC/DC song better than AC/DC. And they are
always fun.

Love Battery: Can you say cool?

The Afghan Whigs: "___________" insert neato adjective here.

Hater: 2 Ben and Matt's for the price of 1!

Mudhoney: Playing Bumbershoot! Woohoo! So are the RHH and Supersuckers, along
with Tad.

Tad: once again, another tour with SG is unlikely, but I'm still dreaming.

Screaming Trees: a definite possibility and a cool one at that.

Helmet, Gruntruck, the Melvins, Second Coming, Foo Fighters and Primus also
come to mind.

soundgarden. but I don't think that they would settle for anything less
than co-headliners. and since it doesn't look like sg will be getting
here before january next year, maybe they will both appear at our music

have already booked dates here for october, so it won't be them :(
