Subject: List Birthday... Late, sorry

Well I arrived home at about 3am and I was affraid to miss the bday chat,
but I got into #somms and there were still three people in. At least, but
I wanted to say happy bday to the list even if it's too late now.

I remember when I posted my first message... Nobody cared :)
It was about August the 23rd or something like that...
Then another day, my brother sent a fake post to the list
and I remember that MoonDruid believed it... and got very
excited because he thought it was really Sg writing...
I sent a post appologizing to the list and everybody wrote
to me and so I made a lot friends here... I remember I was
so ashamed that I even got seth angry because of so many
appologies i sent to him... And after that day I started posting
to the list more regularily and started Chicka's spanish classes as well.

I really feel sorry for getting to channel too late, but anyways,

        HAPPY BIRTHDAY SOMMS!!!!!!!!!

Cool days... I never thought the list would become so much
in my life... thanx seth :)

Subject: Re: Happy Birthday

Time for me to send my birthday wishes to the list, even if they are
belated. I'm not sure exactly when I first subscribed. I'm sure it was
during the first two weeks of the list's life. And if I remember
correctly, my first message was actually a private e-mail to Seth about
not going ballistic over the morons who send unsubscribe messages to the
list rather than "saperl"

I remember that when I unsubbed in December, the list was still a fairly
small community. When I resubscribed in February, things really seemed
to have taken off. (I don't know, maybe there were already a large
number of members in December, but there were definitely a lot more posters in
February.) My one regret is that I had to unsub last December, because
now it takes *much* longer to get my e-mail. (I guess in my first
incarnation, I was higher up on the list the server used to post messages
or something...)

Anyway, congratulations and thanks, Seth. The work you put in on the
list and the Web page -- the work everyone puts in on the Web page -- is
absolutely worth it. When I started on the list, I was really just a
casual SG fan. Now i think I'm a fanatic. (Now I can amaze people at
dinner parties with useful informational tidbits like "Matt Cameron sang
Puberty Love in Attack of the Killer Tomatos.")

Last night on the Olympics broadcast NBC was airing one of those
cheesy little intros they do for different athletes. It was for some
track and field guy...anyway it was supposed to be real depressing or
something I guess that's why when they started the story, Zero Chance
was the background music.
I about fell off the couch.

In one way, it was cool to here SG in such an unexpected situation -
in another it kind of bothered me - I mean it was the Olympics & I
guess I just don't know how I feel about SG as background music for
John Tesh. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Oh yeah, Happy Belated Birthday SOMMS!

I thought it was pretty cool. They were doing a piece on a Cuban high
jumper named Sotomayor. It opened with this dreary picture of a decrepit
Cuban neighborhood in the rain and Zero Chance playing in the
background. Real depressing stuff. I thought I was probably the only
one who caught it. (Makes me wonder who the big SG fan is over at NBC.)

I don't know that someone at NBC is a SG fan, but someone sure likes
alternative/rock/whatever category music you want to call it. But
I think that sometimes, their choices are a bit confusing:
- -Is Zero Chance really a good theme for an Olympic athlete?
- -During a similar cheesy intrest story about a boxer, they
played Mad Season's River of Deceit.
- -During a focus on the US women's gymnastics team, they played
"Stupid Girl" by Garbage. I'm not kidding.

sorry, but i think you're missing the point.

regardless of what the overall quality of the shirt is--that's not the
issue, the way i see it. when we paid for these shirts, we didn't sign
a binding contract dictating the final quality of the
product...BUT...we DID have an extensive discussion/proposing/voting
process to determine what the shirt design would be. nothingman
agreed...nay...BEGGED...to produce the shirt as specified by our
collective design decisions.

My contention...n-man didn't do that. yes, the shirt is wearable...no,
it's not perfect...but my major beef is that it's not what we ordered.
'nuff said.

you paid $11 for each unit in a 40+ bulk order of t-shirts? sorry,
but you were ripped off. I've gotten high-quality name brand (hanes,
fruit o' da' loom) t-shirts in orders over 25 for $7 each, $10 for
sweatshirts. total purchase and screen costs have never been more than
$9 for t-shirts or $12 for sweatshirts.

i was expecting what we ordered as a group, and that's exactly what we
didn't get. this was not a grab-bag operation.

I agree that Nothingman may have bitten off more than he could chew but =

purposely mess things up.
Why does everyone feel that they have the inside track on his motives =
during this whole thing? All of a sudden Nothingman has become some =
psycho who was just out to screw everyone up!
Okay maybe he did panic when he realized that things were going wrong =
and chose to remain silent ... that was wrong but can it be that he is =
just not as brave as some of us on the list feel that they are, in =
facing up to his mistake? Can any of us know how we would have reacted =
in the same situation?
Look, I am not interested in taking sides here... I agree, the shirts =
took a damn long time to be completed, especially as some of us wanted =
them for certain shows ......Nothingman clearly screwed up there but at =
the same time, he is only human and if we wanted a super professional =
job on these shirts, it could easily be said that we should have paid =
the price to get them done professionally.
Lastly, a quick note to Seth, listen man... I can't lie... I was also a =
bit shocked when I read your message, I did think that you would have =

I found it very interesting that one of the digests last week had several
posts concerning Chris' drinking, and someone also quoted his lyrics and
referred to the fact that he apparently chooses to ignore the pain and
problems in the world. It sounds to me like he isn't ignoring
anything...rather he's using alcohol to deal with his/the world's pain and
problems. This is not a criticism...just an observation. The same morning I
was listening to Duff McKagen on K-Rock telling how his pancreas literally
exploded (because of his vodka consumption), and how the doctor's were
shocked that he didn't die right there in the emergency room. Maybe Chris is
just joking around when he's onstage, but I was surprised that he's referred
to himself as an alcoholic in the last four interviews that he did. I would
just hate to see him end up like DM, or worse. By the way, Malvol7, if you
still have the interview where Chris discussed AIDS, Pamela Anderson, sexual
harrassment and infidelity (on his part) I would love to see it. If it's not
too much trouble could you please post it here? B2

Subject: haiku

Just a note on haiku. I know some of you are referring to what we do as
"pseudohaiku" and that's good. I just wanted to point out that haiku is
not simply three lines of 5,7,5
In haiku, everything is concrete; from the five senses
Also, it describes a single moment.

for instance:
              In the ancient pond
A frog leaps -- and then the splash
              of all that water.
                               - Basho

I finally saw both the pretty noose video and bimh videos within a span
of about three days. Both videos were extremely fitting for the songs.
The stream of consciousness, montage effect of pretty noose was
masterfully mixed with morphs and unconventional representations of the
band members. It's the type of video that makes you wonder whats going on
and adds more depth to the song.
Burden in my hand is just a straight rockin video. I really like the way
the videos include all the members since they all seem to be equal
partners, but each does give a nod to chris as the frontman by putting
him in point roles in each.
I wonder if people unfamiliar with soundgarden will believe them
misogynists since both of thier recent videos have featured women
being/about to be/already killed.

Also I got one of my shirts today. I'm kinda hoping that the other one
will come in another package. Seth, did you get all of yours in separate
packages?

Anyway, the shirt isn't _exactly_ what I expected. But, as I waited for
the shirts, I lowered my expectations to avoid disappointment. Honestly,
for such an unconventional method of making and buying a shirt, I think
this turned out very well. The back is a little hard to read, but the
fork is very visible. The font on the front is not the one we decided on,
but it's not awful. The only reason I can think of that this would really
suck is if we were trying to impress someone. I know I'm not.

Anyway, seth, I think you should send them to the band. They're quality
shirts. Hell, I've seen "official" shirts for bands (not soundgarden)
that were poorer quality than these.

In Saturday's digest Nate Crosswhite wrote in reply to my concerns
about a post describing Chris as noticeably drunk on stage:

> I don't have a lot of Soundgarden live experience, but I was under
> the impression that it wasn't that uncommon for them to show up for,
> or get drunk at, their early club gigs. Maybe the cost of fame is

First I want to thank the people who put my mind at ease about this
concern. We've all seen what drinking and drugging can do to talented
people and I just don't want to see that happen to Chris. Now, on to
Nate's post.

Even with the little smiley face I think my concern for Chris may
be being flamed. I have no doubt that the guys got rip roaring drunk
plenty of times at their very early gigs (I don't know, I didn't see
them until '91) but I've seen them 5 times since then and I've never
seen them noticeably drunk on stage. In fact I saw them when they
toured with Danzig and if they ever had reason to come out drunk it
was then, but besides getting pissed about a defective mic that wasn't
being replaced (Chris threw it into the wings) his performance was
majestic.

My concern is an extension of earlier list discussions after the
Spin article came out when several people on the list questioned
whether Chris was having some problems with alcohol. Drinking to have
fun is one thing. Having a drinking problem is another.

And yes, I think it is a cost of fame that people expect you to
act professionally when you do a show. When people pay good money to
see you perform you have an obligation to at least do your best.
That's only my opinion, but if Soundgarden acted like drunken slobs on
stage I would not have the undying respect for them that I do have.
And I also don't think they would have attracted the incredible fans
that make up this list. We've also discussed how music is Chris' job,
its how he makes his living now, and how many jobs are there where you
are allowed to show up drunk? And I'm sure I don't need to give you a
list of all the musicians who have suffered the negative consequences
of drink and drugs.

Many of us on this list feel very close to the guys in Soundgarden
and we genuinely care about them. In fact, many of us have expressed
the feeling that they are like family (as is the list). Since I have
not had the opportunity to see them in a long time I was simply
expressing concern with an impression (my mistake it seems) I got from
an earlier post.

What Chris does on his own time is his business, but what he does
on stage affects us, his fans. If you are saying that musicians should
just get drunk before and/or during performances and play sloppy
performances just to "have fun" I think you are wrong and I think you
are selling Soundgarden and Chris Cornell short. Or perhaps I
misunderstood your post too. If so, I'm sorry. I'm feeling a bit
bitchy today. Maybe I need a drink.

I don't want to sound like harry on horseback here, but I just
want to voice my dissatisfaction with the somms shirt debacle and
nothingman's pivotal role in it. yes, liesl, he probably had only the best
intentions when he signed up for the task, but his handling of it leaves a
lot to be desired. I haven't received my shirt down here in australia,
but it certainly sounds like the shirts are not up to scratch.

>clearly screwed up there but at the same time, he is only human and if we
>wanted a super professional job on these shirts, it could easily be said
>that we should have paid the price to get them done professionally. >

perhaps we should have. perhaps we should have had someone else
do them. god knows that he wasn't the only person putting up his or her
hand. but he seemed adamant, so he got the job. sadly, he didn't live up
to his billing. first off, he misunderstood the directions, and almost
went off and created his own design for the shirt, after what was a fairly
exhaustive process of seth putting up pages devoted to image display and
voting forms, and listers voting on which image they wanted. we managed
to convince nothingman (who must not have been paying any attention to his
mail at that point) that we had, as a list, already decided what was to go
on the shirt. I knew from that point on that nothingman was not the guy
for the job.

so for a quick review, nothingman has: 1. not delivered the
correct shirt with the correct image; 2. delivered the shirts about three
weeks after the point at which u.s listers had hoped they would be wearing
them to live soundgarden shows; and 3. not provided any worthwhile
communcation regarding the creation nor delivery of the shirts to anyone
(to my knowledge) who was buying a shirt.

I can understand that problems can and do occur. unfortunately his
problems have become a problem for many list members. that bastion of
insight and goodwill lawnmowerman tells us nothingman lost his mail
access, and because of this could not report to the list the difficulties
he was having. I am one of many who suggests snail mail. add to this that
nothingman had every problem with getting the actual *image* which we
decided on on the shirt, and it becomes a case a pure bunglism.

if he knew he couldn't give us what we all paid for (and from some
posts, it seems that some of us are very free with our money. I would
argue that if you point to something behind the counter, and then the
storekeeper hands you something different, you have been ripped off in no
uncertain terms), then perhaps he should have recinded his offer to
produce the shirts. that would have been not only professional, but imho
common sense.
