Okay folks,

Now I'm upset. You don't want to make the "List Thug" upset. Here's why I'm a
little peeved.

Oh, and list members aren't allowed opinions or the ability or rights to draw
their own conclusions? I've got a real problem with your attitude here. For
one, Nothingman had every opportunity to get things right. He fucked up,
plain and simple. And, buddy, I think you are the hipocrite here. Seth has
every right to be upset and his disgust is more than justified. And your
flaming of the list members who have the courage to post about their
conclusions or opinions on SG related matters is wrong. Yes, I know you have
the right to post your thoughts too, but I'm defending the others rights,
including mine here. One, we all care about what happens to the members of
Soundgarden because in one way or another, their music has touched and helped
shape our lives. And like it or not, they mean something to us, and I'm sure
they mean something to you, otherwise you wouldn't be a part of this family
we've got going here. I happen to like posting about certain conclusions I
have reached, right or wrong as they may be, I still have that right to post
about them. And who is to say if they are good enough, or intelligent enough?
If it makes people think then great, at least it's a venue of expression.
Most people you would see on the street don't give a rat's ass about it. But
here, people give more than a rat's ass. And that's the damn truth. It takes
a considerable amount of time to read all the posts every day, and if you're
gone for a while, alot of time is involved in catching up. Everyone here
spends a considerable ammount of their day involved in this list. Especially
when time is at a premium for many. And that should tell you something.

Subject: Kim and Chris on MTV Latino [Something lik a transcript]

Well... as I mentioned in my last post, SG just appeared
in MTV Latino(which sucks more than what I do, BTW). Actually
it wasn't the whole band, just Kim and Chris.

They were interviewed by this guy called Alfredo, and some
of the questions were: (please keep in mind that I don't
have a pretty good memory, so Shroom's disclaimer may apply
here)

MTV: "Perry Farrell says that the youth in the US is confused
because of so many bands to choose from, so what do you think of
kids who let themselves get attracted by cheap imitations of real
 bands like you?"

Chris: "I think when MTV supports a band and overplays their video
just because they sound like somebody else, kids go out and buy
four or five CDs of bands that don't satisfy them, so I think kids
should get informed and ask..."

MTV: "Considering you're an album-band, what do you think
about singles?"

and Chris said something like:
"We don't like singles beacause we don't think that you can
represent a whole 16-song album in a single,
(Note from urbano: "At this point Chris makes some gesture like singles are
worthless")
but we sell singles in Europe because that's what they want.
We don't like it and we don't do it in our own country
(Note from urbano: "???") but we do it because it's the only way to sell
records there"

MTV: You have often been compared to Led Zeppelin, do you like to be
campared with them? To be called the Led Zeppelin of the 90's?

Kim: "People can compare us to whoever they want, when people are talking...
you know... it's their business... but we like better to be condsidered
the Soundgarden of the 90's"

then, MTV: "Kim, what will you do after Lolla?"
Kim: "We have a couple of weeks off, and then we'll tour in Europe"

MTV: "Will you tour as hard as the Superunknown tour?"
No, in fact this tour will be longer, the other was
shorter but harder."

MTV: "Any chances on going to Latin America?"
(Note from urbano: "I knew the answer to this...")

Kim: "We're not sure... But we'd like to.." (Note from urbano: "yeah, sure...")

then MTV's Afredo breaks in: "Have you ever been to Latin America?"

Both Kim and Chris "NO".

MTV: "Not even Mexico?"

And Chris: "I was in Tijuana one time, but it doesn't count because
it's just crossing the border. But we would like to one day."
(Note from urbano: "Chris (or Matt or Kim or Ben) when you read this,
make sure I'll rent you my house in Puerto Vallarta for nothing,
complete with Shroom inside..." :)

And at some point Alfredo asked them wether they knew a little spanish,
bot said: "NO".

- ------
That's pretty much what I can remember, I hope it was of some interest :)
If I remember something else, I'll post it l8r. And keep in mind that
neither Chris or Kim nor MTV's Alfredo were drunk during the interview,
it's just my bad english...

This appeared in a show called "Hora Prima" and I think it will
air again sometime on Sunday, but I'm not sure, I'll try to watch
it and do a descent transcription.

I'm not going to get mad about all of this again. Let me just say this.
I think you totally misunderstood about the font for one thing. Yes, I
know it was an image, and that is the way it was kept. That is what he
took to the printer. So, that point cleared up, onward.

Yes, I carbon-copied the message to Nothingamn. The BBS he uses is
through a local community college, and they make their students pay for
access, which is pure crap. He hasn't been able to pay for two months,
so they restricted his access. Therefore, he can get mail and read it,
but cannot reply to any of it. Thus, he has been able to read all of
your complaints and so forth, but hasn't been able to reply. That's not
easy to have people want to hear from you and have to sit there
helpless. Don't you think he wants to respond?

Finally, yes, you are entitled to your own opinion, and yes, you are the
list administrator, so therefore you must be interested. But keep in
mind that as a list administrator, you are held to a higher standard.
It's expected that as the "leader" of these people sharing a very cool
common interest, that you don't incite rage and unrest. In most cases,
an impartial opinion is expected, and an honest, emotionless opinion.
Who needs to hear the profanity? A simple description of the shirt and
perhaps an, "I think it looks terrible." would have sufficed with
perhaps a more in depth description of why you were unhappy. That's the
area that I think you messed up in. Nowhere else. I didn't think you
were repeating yourself. That part of the message was a pat on the back
for reminding people of the etiquette necessary.

In any case, I appreciate the reply, and I am happy to see that it was
well thought out instead of an emotional outburst. Good luck with your
list. Even though I don't agree with a lot of what goes on, it is a
worthy undertaking and Soundgarden would be proud.

Chris

Subject: Re: Shirts and such - rolling in the mud

For some reason, I think seth feels the same way the band does
right now (i.e. being told how to act).

Seth, like Chris, Ben, Kim, and Matt, have the right to say what
they see as the truth no matter if they are members of a band or a list
administrator.  Seth has always been a very reserved member of this forum;
and I believe this is because of his admin status. It's great to see
him taking a stand as a list member, as well as an admin.

I have not seen the shirts yet, but I do know we voted on a
design, a design that isn't on the shirts we ordered. If it was the case
that the graphics were brought to the shirt designer, and he messed it up,
then I ask this:

Didn't the shirt designer make a first draft shirt? The answer we
all know is yes. Nothingman requested that seth send him redid images
since the first ones didn't have enough contrast. Was the original
"somms@mit.edu" image on it at that time? Wasn't a second tester shirt
made (with redesigned images) before they went into printing the rest?
Did the second tester have the voted on "somms@mit.edu" image on it? If
not, why didn't Nothingman say anything?

A important part of the shirt idea was that the list should
decide what the shirt should look like. There was a lot of debate on the
subject of what the shirt should look like, and looking back, it's sad to
think one of those great ideas were in vain.

This post is NOT intended to be a flame to anyone. I have yet to
see my shirt and make my own opinions on it. But, I did vote on the black
"somms@mit.edu" that isn't included on the shirt, as did a majority of
those who bought shirts, and it's sad to see my vote negated. Most of us
don't have anything against Nothingman personally. But, if you hear a
"quack" you know it's duck. Likewise, Seth thought it stinks, and called
it "shit". He has a right to think it, say it, believe it; List
Admin or not.

From: caryn rose <clr@nwlink.com>
Subject: shirts and such (warning! contains profanity!)

once again, we've got someone relatively new on this list accusing us all of
not having a mind of our own. I don't get how these people come on here and
after a digest or two decide they've got us all figured out. We need
netiquitte reminders? looks like the pot is calling the kettle black. Some
of us have been privately, off list, discussing our anger towards Nothingman
and what we would do if the shirts didn't materialize. Some of us chose not
to involve Seth; I won't mention who the other members were because it's not
my place to do so. The point is, we don't need Seth to tell us how to think
and how to feel. if you had half a clue about this list, you'd realize that
the list is full of individual, unique-thinking, highly-opinionated people.
we don't always agree. but whatever.

here's the deal: nothingman CLEARLY bit off more than he could chew. but
instead of writing a snail mail letter to seth or any of us who paid for
shirts, he vanished from the list with some lame excuse about 'email
problems' and didn't turn to anyone. countless people on this list offered
to help him. (Right, Toni?). He refused to accept help from anyone. From
what you tell us, Nothingman clearly was in way over his head. He should
have taken the money orders and the checks he received and mailed them back
to the people they came from. He could have stuck them all in an envelope
and mailed them back to Seth and we could have sent Seth SASE's for the
return of the money orders, or whatever.

The point is, Nothingman deserves to be flamed far more than he's gotten.
If he didn't know anything about computers, he shouldn't have taken on the
task. He made a convincing case for being the one to do so, including
knowing a good place to get the shirts printed. This obviously wasn't the
case. No one forced him to take this job. This isn't a case of someone
changing their mind about what the shirts were supposed to look like. If
the shirts had been late, but still looked like the original design, that's
one thing. If I remember correctly Nothingman announced to the list shortly
after he got the disk from seth that he was going to make some changes
because *he* didn't like something. I personally think (and since he hasn't
bothered to communicate in any way, shape, or form with ANYONE on this list,
I'm gonna think what I want) that he went off on his little power trip once
he had all the money and decided he'd do what he wanted. if that's not that
case, i want to hear it from *him*, and not his lackeys he sends to defend
him on the list.

>Finally, yes, you are entitled to your own opinion, and yes, you are the

*BULLSHIT*. who says? where is this written? 'higher standard'? what
exactly did seth do wrong besides say what he thought and be honest?

oh JESUS. yet another person hung up on stupid words. seth is an MIT
student! he's not STUPID! if he says 'fuck' he means 'fuck'! *most* of
the people on this list are NOT STUPID and have a full command of the
english language. i hardly think that in 1996 the use of 'profanity' (gee,
what do you think of 'big dumb sex', i'd like to know) means you are lacking
in moral turptitude.

There you go. A lot of people said that the songs they voted for
were their favourites for the week, so I expect that those results will
change a lot in a month or so. Oh well, I tried...

If you really want to know where your favourite song ranked, e-mail
me and I'll muster up the energy to type it all out..

I've heard a few live versions of Waiting For The Sun from Soundgarden & I'd
describe it was dirty. You're not going to hear that slinky, jangly guitar
rhythm... but you will hear the slides. When the Doors get fuzzy (those
power chords) Soundgarden gets loud, dirty & menacing. The bass IS very
strong but I don't recall if it's note for note or not. The vocals are
distorted... very cool. Cornell sounds great singing through this vibrating,
trippy vocal effect but I think it's only used during versus (can't remember
exactly). The vocals are pretty much the exact ones that Morrison muttered
and the song does tend to drag al a the slow part of Gun, Beyond the Wheel or
4th Of July... so I'd say that it's a good thing (c:

Personally just about the highlight of the New Orleans Lolla show was
Soundgarden playing Waiting For The Sun... I thought it was beautiful (c:
And no, I'm not a Doors obsessor; I'm merely a casual Doors fan. Now,
Soundgarden, Bad Religion... I might be obsessed with them (c:

Subject: RE: Influences

What a trip!

The other day I was hunting down info on Wendy O Williams (who is
rumored to be up for the Van Halen opening) and came across something on
one of my favorite pentagenerian (50-year old) and ex-Jimi Hendrix
roadie--Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. Anyway, Lemmy was in Hawkwind
(bass, guitar, harmonica). So I goes down to my local music dealer, who
happens to have a pretty good record vault, and he checks and finds
Hawkwind's 1972 release "Doremi Fasol Latido". Took it home, spun it and
grooved to some pretty cool tunes. Reminds me of a cross between a
mellower Motorhead/early Pink Floyd/Blue Oyster Cult/the Kinks/Uriah
Heep/a little splash of Zep. Actually, I'm listening right now to the
tune "Brainstorm" and it rocks. And I can see where Kim might have been
influenced by Baron Brock (vocals, lead guitar, 12-string) and Lemmy's
wah-wah leads and fills. Definitely, if you like to experiment with your
music, check out Hawkwind! I recommend "Doremi Fasol Latido" and you
should have no prob getting it on CD, because I checked my friend's
catalog and it looks like Hawkwind had all their albums re-issued on CD
recently. For more on Hawkwind check out

i'll probably regret sending this cause it might be pretty obvious.. i =

and downs.. someone please explain in steps...

guitar tuning:
CGCGGE is just like EADGBE but u do this....
the bottom three strings (EAD) tune down 1 whole step. then take the very
bottom string(used to be E) then tune it like you would 'drop d' it. as for
the 'B' string, just lower it till its like the G string right under it.....
and that b it....
