OK, Shroom, you'd better be watching your back, cause Susan is really
going to be after you now! First you call Rockline and tell her husband
that you love him, and now he's dedicated a song to you. I think your
plan to snare Chris is starting to work!

It sucks that kim has to deal with court, etc. But, we really can't make
a reasonable decision about the incident because we weren't there. It
could be that kim was pissed about his room getting burgled and took out
his aggression on the drunk bitch. I'm not saying Heather Brainless is
blameless. I'm just saying that neither is Kim (blameless, that is, not
brainless) All we have are some vague reports and a statement from pr people.
Not that our discussion greatly affects the outcome of the actual events,
I'm just trying to diffuse some aggression.

Damn A/C! I keep kicking it and it still doesn't work! Okay, all this talk
about the bitch that framed Kim is really pissing me off. I'm about to go
kick some ass. I wanna go out to Charlotte and sit in front of her house with

have to stay put. Heather the Brainless is the exact reason why stupid people
shouldn't breed. Ignorance breeds ignorance, I say. Maybe she would
understand a mailbomb or two. Heheh, :::evil grin:::: it's too damn hot! I
mean, who in the hell does she think she is? That lowlife scoundrel. She
isn't fit to lick Kim's boots, let alone be slapped by his ever so talented
hands. She should feel so low, so worthless. I think a move to Siberia is in
order for her. If she presses charges, there is no telling what I might do?
I may go completely insane, and make Heather Mifflin voodoo dolls for the
whole list, and we can simultaneously gouge out her eyes! Yeah, yyeeaahhh.

Subject: The cost of fame?

I've been feeling really sad about the problems Soundgarden seems to
be having at the lolla shows. I was so glad to read Shroom's post
because the Soundgarden show she described sounded more like the
Soundgarden I remember (91-92 shows).

The post that bothered me the most was one that described Chris as
practically staggering drunk on stage. This, to me, is not a pretty
picture and really concerned me. Every time I've seen Soundgarden
Chris has presented himself as majestic, proud almost to the point of
arrogance, and totally in control. It frightens me to think of him
losing that (shades of the late Jim Morrison in his alcohol-bloated
morose days). I hope that show was an exception rather than a sign of
things to come.

Does anyone know how the guys in Metallica are personality-wise?
Could there be clashes going on there? It seems that there is more
going on here than being disappointed with the lolla crowds.
Personally I can't wait until this tour is over - I think our guys
need a break.

And my .02 on the Kim Thayil incident: I think it is terrible that
supposed fans would disrespect him so much. Some people seem to forget
that celebrities have bad days, too. I feel so bad that his hotel room
was broken into and although I don't condone hitting people just
because you're in a bad mood I can see that this combined with the
other stresses of touring could make someone do something out of
character. I agree with whoever wrote that he was probably just
swatting at the camera and accidently hit the woman. Even on a bad day
I just can't picture Kim deliberately doing that. I also agree that
his "rock star" status was more of a factor in his arrest than his
ethnicity. When I lived across the river from Cincinnati the Grateful
Dead played there and you would have thought the devil himself were
coming to Cincinnati. They actually had warnings in the newspapers for
parents so they could "protect" their children from the evil. It was
unbelievable.

Well, in Atlanta they played it. Compared to the rest of the set,
this song was OK (Not Ultramega OK, though ;} ). The verses were slow
and built into the chorus where Cornell bellowed '!!Waiting For the

theyd've played a TOD song... Wooden Jesus, maybe.

Although I love the South, I must agree with DeeDee's observations. I
especially like the part about Rockingham trying to dissuade the concert and the
overzealous security precautions. That's just typical. I live in Greenville, SC
which, for the most part, is progressive. However, It seems that this part of
the country is stuck in the freakin mid 80's. The only rock radio station we
have around here constantly plays a pukeworthy rotation of Skynyrd, Boston,
Kansas, etc... It baffles me sometimes. I wonder if, instead of Kim, it was
some country singer involved in this situation... Would it be the same??

Yes, people, racism is alive and well in the south and NC is no
exception. I have lived here half my life and it never ceases to amaze
me how bigoted people here can be. The bigger towns are more
progressive, especially those where there are universities, ie UNC, NCSU
and Duke...Rockingham NC can only boast being the proud home of the
speedway and dragway. If you were to follow the coming of lollapolooza
to NC in the papers you would know that Rockingham faught tooth and nail
to keep the show from invading their quaint little town. They were
convinced that the freaks of the show would bring drugs and the like into
their town corrupting all that were exposed. Security at the show was
ridiculous: two helicopters circled the entire time, event security was
in every nook and cranny, sherrifs, state troopers, and city cops were on
towers with binoculars waiting to pounce.

I wont conclusively state that KT was arrested because he is of ethnic
origin but I will say that the fact that he is a long haired, bearded,
'rock star' in a town where long haired, bearded rock stars are not wanted
most likely played a major role in his arrest. And his origin certainly
didnt hurt.

Rockingham is a little town. The likes to lolla turned that town on it's
collective ass. Any excuse to arrest a part of the show just added fuel
to their already preconceived notions about the show and the type of
people the show attracted.

just my .02 ...flame on...

Okay, as far as I can tell, "Burden In My Hand" will be released as a
CD single in the UK on August 13. Much like "Pretty Noose," there will
be two versions of the single, though I don't know yet what the track
lists are. A limited edition color 7" will be released on the same
day.

I haven't heard anything about a US release.

I read in Chris' bio on the Unofficial (REAL) SG Homepage a big
influence was Killing Joke's eponymous debut circa 1980 as an example
that he could mix metal w/"new-wave". KJ is a post-punk UK band, and
a band I've been into for years! It's so cool that Chris loves 'em
too. 17 yrs after they formed they're back in original form.
"Pandemonium" was nearly a masterpiece (1994): many ppl mistake it
for Metallica (like Howard Stern). "Democracy" (1996) is good, but
not on the level of "Pandemonium". I still love their debut album
best (Yes, I own 2 VINYL copies). OPERATION VINYL RESCUE will be
occurring this weekend in Manhattan, Yonkers, and maybe the Bronx too,
between KISS shows.
Anyway, check out KILLING JOKE. LOUDLY, Cyn xo

BTW, I've decided to model my so-called-life most recently after Susan

I don't have a lot of Soundgarden live experience, but I was under
the impression that it wasn't that uncommon for them to show up for,
or get drunk at, their early club gigs. Maybe the cost of fame is
that everyone expects you to stay sober when you get famous. :)

I didn't get the feeling that Chris was drunk in Atlanta. He seemed in
great control of his voice. I never saw any pronounced staggering and I
had a good view of him the entire show. Yes, he did make the comment about
the gold medal in vodka drinking and another reference to vodka before
drinking out of a plastic cup. It seems that Chris always makes comments
about alcohol. In that interview with Metal Hammer(7-96) he says when
asked about the most outrageous thing he did "whatever memory I have of it,
I might have drunk it away between now and than" or another question the
end of the answer is; "me and Scotch are friends again" I don't know
whether it's an issue or not. But both shows I saw him at this summer he
did not appear to be unable to perform or even affected by alcohol from my
point of hearing and vision. toni

it could be, but i only saw that saturday night live performance the one

really liking the version from snl though, so it is possible that it was
the same recording. are they allowed to do that though? wouldn't they

it was really heavy, not black hole sunish, but more fourth of july-ish,
or maybe mailman-ish. big heavy bass, lots of chors, and they sped it up
quite a bit. of course, the vocals are much more impressive in range and
cornellism. it was somewhat difficult to recognize the song without them
saying what it was, but the lyrics were the same, and the instrumentation
was similar enough to make it recognizable.

Intergalactic Garage is at http://www.intrepid.net/igg/ -- the
latest additions to their Soundgarden catalog, with typos, are:

SOUNDGARDEN BURDEN IN MY HEAD CV 7 (UK) 8/13 [$4.99] 3.99
Very limited coloured vinyl 7" in PVC sleeve
	SOUNDGARDEN BURDEN IN MY HEAD #1 CD-5 (UK) 8/13 [$10] 8.99
	SOUNDGARDEN BURDEN IN MY HEAD #2 CD-5 (UK) 8/13 [$10] 8.99

The price at the far right is what you pay (in US dollars) if you
order before the 8/13 release date. The price in brackets is what you
pay if you order after the release date.

IGG also carries a bunch of other Soundgarden stuff:

SOUNDGARDEN Screaming Life EP CV (US) 12" 10.00
SOUNDGARDEN Fell On Black Days EP PD 7 (UK) 7" 6.99
SOUNDGARDEN Jesus Christ Pose / Stray Cat Blues PD 7" 10.00
SOUNDGARDEN Spoonman / Fresh Tendrils PD 7 (UK) 7" 10.00
SOUNDGARDEN Fell On Black Days CD-5 #1 CD 10.00
SOUNDGARDEN Fell On Black Days CD-5 #2 CD 10.00
SOUNDGARDEN Rusty Cage #1 3-trk PD CD 10.00
SOUNDGARDEN My Wave 4-track PC CD 12.50
SOUNDGARDEN Spoonman/Cold Bitch PC CD 10.00

And they have some stuff in their special-order CD catalog, too, like
Superunknown with "She Likes Surprises," etc.

I'm not affiliated with IGG in any way, but I've ordered from them
before and always gotten my stuff promptly. I got DOTU on clear vinyl
all three "Pretty Noose" singles (2 CDs and the 7"), and some picture
7"s with no problems.

PS - That's *not* Screaming Life on orange vinyl for $10. It's on some
other color; Sub Pop reissued quite a few. Mine's on swirly pink
vinyl.

Ok... more about Chris' sexy body... it was AWESOME!!!! I absolutely
LOVE the way he moves. His walk is so... amazing. The way he holds his
guitar... mmmmm... yummy.
I did manage to make eye contact with Chris for a second at the
beginning of the show. I was getting squished in the pit (something I
usually enjoy)... but I couldn't watch the band very well. So I had the
security pull me over the barricades, and I walked straight up to the front
of the stage... right up to Chris, not ten feet away. He was standing there
singing... and he looked down, we made eye contact for a second, and then he
looked back up at the audience. I was stunned. Then I walked off. It was
SO AMAZING!!! And then of course later, he dedicated that song to ME!!!
MEMEMEMEME!!! Well, ok... maybe it wasn't to ME... but then again, maybe it
WAS. Heheheh... if it wasn't, that was sure a groovy coincidence, huh?!?
"This next song is dedicated to all the red haired devils in Texas."
 MEMEMEME!!! Heheheh...
At the beginning of the show, just before SG took the stage... Erin and
I were almost KILLED by the redneck Metallica fans. They started this HUGE
water bottle and pizza plate riot. Can you imagine getting hit with fifty
million water bottles from all sides AT ONCE?!? Everyone was screaming,
whether with delight or terror. Texas sucks.
Ok... I DID manage to sneak backstage (and I have the lacerations to
prove it, damn barb wire fences), but by the time I did get back there, SG
was gone. I wandered around for a little bit... but nothing was REALLY
interesting. It was a blast sneaking around, and dodging security, though.
Damn me... if only I'd gotten back there a little bit sooner!! Oh well...

It does. I can attest to this. Though I am not even close to being
a Lance Armstrong, just a portly bike commuter, SG propels me to
work and back 3 days a week. The 17 mile trip takes an hour w/ SG,
2 hours w/o SG. Once I tried to make it while listening to a local
alterno-schlock radio station and I wound up naked in a railroad
yard, w/o my bike, screaming the words to Big Dumb Sex at a dried
cowpie I was carrying around.

Best SG cycling tunes (currently)

Nothing to Say - I have yet to hear the entire song and remember it.
About 30 seconds into it, I go into a trance which
lasts a few miles, until the songs ends, and I come
out of it feeling like I just had a shot of B-12.

Gun - Topping a hill and heading down the other side as the songs revs
up is amazing. Indurain could have gone 5 straight in the Tour de
France if he had tried this.

JCP - Pure speed.

Like Suicide - I ride home at night, and have a religious experience
each time I hear this song, especially the solo and
the Chaka Khan line that Chris repeats just before it.

Tighter and Tighter - See above. "And I hope it's a sweet ride, here
                      for me tonight."

Let me just start out by saying this: You posted a note the
other day on mailing list etiquette. That was pretty nice of you. And
ever since I got on this list I have realized just how much the people
on the list needed that. No one wants to read something five or six
times, and no one needs to listen to some idiot spouting about something
that he knows nothing about or flaming other people. That's
counter-productive to the mailing list. Now, for the part of this
message that you obviously need to hear.
You have just turned yourself into a huge hypocrite. Not only
have you flamed a member of the list for something that he worked hard to
get accomplished, but you also jumped to conclusions...worse than all
those people who jumped all over the Kim situation. RC knows next to
nothing about computers. He couldn't change a font if you told him how
to do it. "Who gave him the authority?" Yeah, just who does he think he
is to take the files you gave him, put them on a disk, and take them to
the shirt printer? The nerve. He even came to me to see if I had
something he could see the files with before he took them to the printers
because he was curious as to what they looked like. I had nothing, so he
took them straight there. He should be ashamed.
You are the list administrator. What are you thinking. The
shirt looks pretty good. I don't know whether the tension of waiting,
heaven forbid, more than two minutes for a shirt which was provided at a
price much cheaper than anyone else could offer has you all upset or not,
but I do know that regardless, you have no business voicing your anger to
the entire list. You are going to get more people upset for nothing than
ever would have happened. Not only that, but now you will hear 5 times
the amount of complaining. Nice to know how much trouble you have caused
yourself, isn't it?
I personaly don't care how much you get mad at Nothingman. He
might be my friend, but I would let him take the abuse if he deserved
it. This goes beyond that, and I would be critical even if he was my
worst enemy. Poor form, Seth, poor form. Next time, why don't you try
making the shirts yourself. At least that way you can blame yourself,
and you may find that a little harder than blaming someone else.
I would like you to unsubscribe me from the list. There is no
point in me staying on if even the list administrator can't keep himself
from rolling in the mud with the members with the least list respect. I
won't be missed....I have been here less than two weeks and my posts have
caused nothing but unrest, though meant to be helpful.

Subject: Re: Shirts and such - rolling in the mud
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

You give no evidence of my being a hypocrite. If you look at the two
points I made about list etiquette, neither of them have anything to
do with my bitching about the shirts. Nobody else said the shirts look
terrible, so I'm not guilty of repeating what's already been said, and
I've heard no explanation from Nothingman, so I can flame whoever I
want.

You said: "Yeah, just who does he think he is to take the files you
gave him, put them on a disk, and take them to the shirt printer? The
nerve."

This was exactly my point. Had he done that, I would have no reason to
be pissed. Unfortunately, he did not. Nobody had to actually choose a
font and type out "somms@mit.edu" -- the text was saved as an image,
the same way as the image for the back of the shirt was saved, so I
would love to know how that file somehow didn't make it all the way to
the printer. If we were talking about a Word document or something,
where the output was dependent on the printer having the same fonts
that I have, I could understand, but it was an image. It looks the
same on every computer everywhere.

Furthermore, I notice that you copied your message to Nothingman. I
remember you saying something about his not being able to afford his
Internet access, so why are you bothering to email him? If he truly
can afford his Internet access, I want to hear from him. Keep in mind
that Nothingman was not the only person who offered to do the shirts,
though he was convincing enough in his bid to do them that the job was
reluctantly given to him. Keep in mind that the shirts were due
*before* Lollapalooza started. Two minutes I could have waited; I
wound up waiting more than a month, and considering I shelled out a
large sum of money for 5 shirts, I have every right to complain that
not only did my merchandise arrive late, it was not the merchandise
for which I paid. Had I offered to do the shirts, you damn well better
believe I would have had them out on time and produced exactly as
expected, or I would have notified everyone who sent me money and
given them the option of a full refund or continuing with another
design -- I did not have the resources to get the shirts done right,
so I didn't offer. I would have expected the same from Nothingman.
Since he did not meet that expectation, I feel I have every right to
blame him.

Also, keep this in mind: if I wish to post a personal opinion to the
list, I have as much right to do that as you do. My being the
listadmin has nothing to do with it. I wouldn't be the goddamn
listadmin if I didn't want to participate in the mailing list, and I
don't see how you get to decide that I'm not allowed to voice my
opinions on the off chance that someone might be offended. I don't
work for some list maintenance company and though I've been called a
side-taking automaton, I reserve the right to say whatever I please as
long as it's relevant to Soundgarden.
