Just my observations on the Kim Thayil scandal. I9m sure many of you
know what it feels like to have your property stolen, especially to have
someone break into your home or room or car or whatever and go thru your
personal belongings, helping themselves to whatever they want. You feel
violated and really, really, angry, even if what was taken was of little
value. Of course, I don9t know what was stolen from Kim, but I don9t
think that matters. Knowing the way that type of thing makes you feel,
I9d say his response to those drunken morons was pretty civil. I9m a
pretty much of a meek and mild person, but I would have lost my cool in
that situation, too. Sounds like this girl saw a chance to get back at
the big bad rock star who was so mean to her9 and so she9s going to
waste the taxpayer9s money and the band9s time and money to she can get
her 15 minutes. Doesn9t seem like she would have much of a case, but
then as some of you have mentioned there9s always the racism factor...

OK, now let9s get that posse together and ride!!!

I am a lurker that finally feels compelled to post. First, I live in =
Atlanta, and I was at the show here. The set list is as follows:

  1. Spoonman
  2. Searching with my Good Eye Closed
  3. Let me Drown
  4. Waiting for the Sun (Doors)
  5. Pretty Noose
  6. Burden in my Hand
  7. My Wave
  8. Ty Cobb =20
  9. Fell on Black Days
10. Rhinosaur =20
11. Rusty Cage =20
12. Black Hole Sun
13. Outshined =20
14. Mailman =20
15. Blow up the Outside World
16. Drawing Flies=20
17. Applebite =20
18. Jesus Christ Pose

Next, I also feel compelled to comment on the recent incident concerning =
Kim Thayil. I say knock the bitch down. To many people let others =
mistreat them. I agree that violence is not the solution to many =
problems, but sometimes it is the answer to others. I seriously doubt =
that idiotic drunks could have been reasoned with, and for that matter, =
why should Kim have to waste his time standing around dealing with them =
anyway. Especially after his room had been broken into. Those people =
probably only knew that he was famous, not who he was, or what band he =
was in. I do not think that Kim should have to apologize for wanting to =
be left alone. If he were not famous, then what those people did would =
be considered assault, afterall, they did start the whole incident. =
Being drunk and stupid is no excuse to harass others, even famous = people.
I say more people need to be beaten for their stupidity and =
inconsideration, eventually they will all get the idea and change their =
behavior. Mold the masses into a better conformity.

Subject: SG in Mad Season?

Hey everyone, somebody on the Alice in Chains mailing list got this
off of a Pearl Jam web site (how's that for a Seattle connection?):

<<Mike has left the band Bumrush, but continues to work with other
musicians. A live version of Mad Season's "River of Deceit" is on
the CD, Bite Back: Live at the Crocodile. Mike will complete
another collaberation soon--members of the Screaming Trees,
Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains (including Layne Staley) joined
Mike in the studio a few months ago to produce a new Mad Season
record.>>

This seems to say that at least one of the SG members is joining up
for Mad Seasons' next project. For those who don't know, Mad Season
was a side project composed of Layne Staley of AIC, Mike McCready of
PJ, Barrett Martin of Screaming Trees, and John Baker Saunders. Their
last album was amazing, IMHO, and their next could only be more so if
joined by one of the "Elite Four"!
So, does anybody know any more about this?

Nate

Subject: beating a dead horse...

ok, I have always been one for my subject so let's get to it. In light
of the KT incident there have been various innuendos floating around the
list that there is more to this than there appears. I have seen several
posts mentioning the possibility of some racism being involved, etc etc.

Well, to be blunt, I have a real problem with that. And my main problem
is that *NO* evidence that I am aware of relating to *this* specific
incident points anywhere in that direction. We can sit here making up
scenarios in which kim comes out innocent all day, but until some facts
come up to support one of them, what have we got?

If you are going to say that being in NC is your evidence, well, I guess
we'll just have to agree to disagree. I think this incident could have
occurred anywhere (cuz obnoxious fans are everywhere). If you think it
happened in NC because of kim's ethnic background then I think you are
wrong, but I imagine it's pretty much useless to argue. But just as an
experiment, do the following. Find a mirror, and look yourself in the
eye, then repeat the following:

'All of the newspaper reports and wire releases we have are wrong.
Kim Thayil should not have been arrested. He was only arrested
because of the racist NC cops. And I am not blinded at all by my
intense love for Soundgarden, looking at this rationally and
logically, I believe this scenario to be a real possibility.'

Or, you could say:

'Kim Thayil returned from a Lolla show in a bad mood, and an
obnoxious, camera toting fan pushed him over the edge. He hit
her, and was arrested for simple assault. Although this doesn't
have the Oliver Stone excitement of the first account it does fit
with all the evidence we have and even seems remotely possible.'

Although I feel confident this won't help anything, I feel better.
Thanks to the list member who asked me to post publicly. Seth, sorry for
mailing to the aol account the other day. Oh yeah, and I have no
interest in debating this on the digest so please respond via
private email.

or, you could say:

'All the newspaper reports and wire releases are biased by the nature of
the media, depending on where they come from. Kim Thayil should probably
not have been arrested. The 'property damage' was a disposable camera!
The people pressing the charges probably did so so they could try and
press a civil lawsuit in future (you can't press civil unless you press
criminal first, am i right or wrong? brian? help me!), because they know
kim is a 'rock star' and has money. this was a matter where both parties
were in the wrong, frankly. kim should not have lost his temper and the
wedding party should have respected kim's personal space. the possibility
that kim was arrested because he was a rock star is probably more likely
than the fact that he is east indian, but there is racism EVERYWHERE,
let's face it. if kim hit this woman out of the blue for no reason
whatsoever, i would be very disappointed in him. however, this does not
appear to be the case, and the people on this list not only love
soundgarden intensely, they are also for the most part intelligent,
rational individuals who are capable of making informed *OPINIONS*'.

NOTE TO CARYN:

Yeah, I had the bright idea of bringing binoculars to Lollapalooza, because I
was just too sick to fight the crowd. Naturally I didn't hide them, because
I've NEVER had a problem bringing knockers to a concert (and I've been to
plenty). Anyway, security would not allow me to bring them in. I even got
the head of security for Cellar Door, (who is a friend of mine) involved,
and he felt bad, but we could NOT bring them in. Luckily, my sister, being
the sweetheart that she is, volunteered to make the 3 mile trek back to the
car to lock them up. So check with your local venue first....or:

HIDE YOUR KNOCKERS!!!!!!!

BTW, the day after the show, the Sun Sentinel (Broward County newspaper), did
a review of the show. It was a long ass review too, covering most of the
bands, both main stage and second stage. And can you believe they didn't
mention Soundgarden ONCE???!!! Not once. They ran one picture, and do you
know what picture? Chris Cornell. Awesome pic. I'm trying to find the

Yes, people, racism is alive and well in the south and NC is no
exception. I have lived here half my life and it never ceases to amaze
me how bigoted people here can be. The bigger towns are more
progressive, especially those where there are universities, ie UNC, NCSU
and Duke...Rockingham NC can only boast being the proud home of the
speedway and dragway. If you were to follow the coming of lollapolooza
to NC in the papers you would know that Rockingham faught tooth and nail
to keep the show from invading their quaint little town. They were
convinced that the freaks of the show would bring drugs and the like into
their town corrupting all that were exposed. Security at the show was
ridiculous: two helicopters circled the entire time, event security was
in every nook and cranny, sherrifs, state troopers, and city cops were on
towers with binoculars waiting to pounce.

I wont conclusively state that KT was arrested because he is of ethnic
origin but I will say that the fact that he is a long haired, bearded,
'rock star' in a town where long haired, bearded rock stars are not wanted
most likely played a major role in his arrest. And his origin certainly
didnt hurt.

Rockingham is a little town. The likes to lolla turned that town on it's
collective ass. Any excuse to arrest a part of the show just added fuel
to their already preconceived notions about the show and the type of
people the show attracted.

just my .02 ...flame on...

and probably sg from the *far* side of the stage (house left). we'll get
as close as we can without getting killed for sg. again, look for the
sign. (yes, i will make an idiot of myself) "FREE KIM THAYIL :
somms@mit.edu"

(actually, let me take a poll: do you think the band will find the sign
amusing or will it irritate the fuck out of them? i mean, on the one
hand, it's a nice sign of support, on the other, it's a reminder of
something they'd probably like to forget. votes here or via private
mail... i'm seriously interested...)

anyway, i'll be there with some sign on yellow posterboard. i doubt
there'll be anyone else there *that* stupid. the entourage will include
me, bonnie cochrane, respective SO's, aaron (the list thug, hopefully),
and possibly andrea pinto. anyone else, ya know, find us or not. ;-)

i'll be leaving early monday afternoon so i won't be back on line until
wednesday morning, unless i have the strength to post right when we get
back tuesday night... i'll try to get the setlist through if nothing else.

great. one shirt a day. at this rate, some of us will be lucky if we get
ours in time for the winter dates. this REALLY sucks. i mean, i guess i
don't expect him to take them all at once (okay, i do), but ya kknow, five
or ten at a time wouldn't kill him!

i don't think we'll ever get it. ;-( which is too bad. i miss
nothingman's posts.

Hi. I just felt compelled to talk about photography at concerts.
A flash will only be effective at a short distance. If you are about 10
feet (most likely less w/ those cheap-o disposables), the flash work. But
if you are that close, the stage lighting will work in most cases.
Sorry, but it always irks me when I see people (at the Olympics, for
example) who are about 4000 feet away from what they are taking a picture of
and that annoying flash goes off. It doesn't do any good.
I brought a (free) disposable w/o a flash to the Atlanta show. But I
realized when I got in that it wouldn't work because the crowd was so far
away from the stage. I only took about 4 pictures. They weren't printed.
And the negatives just had teeny little specs on it (the heart of the lights).
Anyway, sorry if you don't give a shit
bye

Subject: The shirts - what the FUCK?
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

The 'somms@mit.edu' graphic that is on the shirts is NOT the graphic
that I provided to Nothingman. I don't know what the fuck is going on
or where he got the authority to change the design without telling any
of us. It's written in some cheesy generic font, and quite frankly,
looks like shit. There's absolutely no excuse for this -- he's had
more than enough benefit of the doubt.

The contrast on the graphic on the back of the shirt is also terrible
- -- the text is all but unreadable on top of the fork.

I'm not sure if I'm going to send these to the band or not...

From: ShRooMGrLz@aol.com
Subject: TX Lolla!!!

Umkay kiddies... I'm WAY to tired to post the official Shroom review
tonight, so tomorrow I promise to finish it. All of them were in excellent
moods!! Here are some highlights:

- - THE BIGGEST ONE!!! Chris announced "This next song is for all the red
haired devils in Texas!!" Then he played BHS, solo!! Ummm.... can we say
instant heart attack?!?!? The people around me pointed to me and said
"That's you!!" Oh man... I'll comment more on this tomorrow...

- - Chris wore tight black jeans, gray boxers, and a tight white shirt (humina)
with black around the arms and neck. Matt had on a white shirt (that's all I
could see), Kim had on some kind of black t-shirt and black jeans. Ben had
black leather pants (yummy) and a white tank top/undershirt on. Chris took
his shirt off right after BHS for Outshined. I loved it!! But the guy has
DEFINITELY lost some weight!! He looks like he did during the LTL days!!
 More on this later...

- - Set list (not in order) They only played TWO songs from DOTU. I was
disappointed:
Pretty Noose
Ty Cobb
Rusty Cage
Jesus Christ Pose,
Searching with my Good Eye Closed
Outshined
Let Me Drown
My Wave
BHS
Spoonman (they opened with this one)
Mailman
Fell On Black Days
Waiting For The Sun
(if there's any more songs, I sure as hell can't remember them right now...)

- - During JCP, Ben actually STOPPED playing to pull up his pants... which he
did very energetically.

- - Also during JCP Kim and Ben started butting their guitars against one
another. Completely weird, and I loved it! Guitar wars... cool.

- - At one point Chris knelt on the floor and threw his microphone under Kim's
feet. He did this a couple time to try and trip Kim up. They were both
grinning about it. He almost got Kim once.

- - Chris encouraged people to trash the town of Ferris, because the town had
tried everything to NOT have Lolla in their town. "Those death metal rock
bands" And during the intro to JCP, Chris says something like "I'm praying
to Jesus Christ to keep my town safe from those rock bands" That's not what
he said, but it's basically what he meant. Hopefully Gail will remember more
of this stuff than me. But I will NEVER forget "This next song is for all
the red haired devils in Texas!!" Heheheh... can ya blame me?!?
Well, I'm going to hand the computer over to Erin, who was kind enough
to accompany me to the show... and who is crashing at my place tonight.
*** Tomorrow's highlights ***
- - More babbling about Chris' sexy body!!
- - Hear about how the stupid Texas Metallica fans almost killed Erin and I
with flying water bottles and pizza plates!!
- - Details of my adventure getting backstage at Lolla, and how when I got
there... I couldn't find the damned band. Disappointment and adventure...
<sigh> They got away this time... but next time, they're MINE!!!
                   <kisskiss>
                                Shroom

"Hey Shroom... what's the duct tape for? What do you mean you're kidnapping
me? You're going to take me to an undisclosed location, and perform devious
acts upon my sexy body?!?!? Ummmm........... ok!!" ~ Chris Cornell
(Words not necessarily said in that order...) <~~~ my disclaimer
