Hi guys,

Okay, we all know about the Thayil incident. Now, what are we, the list (just
a bunch of fans) gonna do about it? I hereby declare war on Heather Miffin
(Heheh, I'm listening to Power Trip). Would someone in the Charlotte area
please look up her address and phone number for the list? Shroom and Seth can
send their goon to muscle her and build some obscene spam creations in her
front yard. Nothingman can sell her a shirt. And the rest of us can threaten
her with haiku's and some nasty phone calls and letters. If anyone is somehow
connected to the Mob, let us know, Kim may need the help. And if you have any
special talents, by all means, make good use of them against this woman. I
wrote a special haiku for the occasion:

Strong enough for Kim,
PH balanced for Heather Miffin......
Kick some ass.

I am by no means glorifying physical violence here. Um well maybe I am. I
don't think Kim would have slapped her if she didn't deserve it.

someone on their behalf.

Subject: Garden takes the gold

As some may know, SG played Atlanta last night. OK, Straight to
the goods... Despite the ungodly humid weather, the sickening joke of
an opening act and the fact that the crowd was forced to wait,
standing up, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 before SG took stage... and despite
the fact that the venue and the crowd were pretty lame... and despite
the fact that there existed a drunk, puking girl next to me... this
was the best show that I've ever seen.
After finally taking stage they ripped into a powerfully tight
version of Spoonman. From here on I was in a daze. I'll post the
setlist from memory in a while. Cornell was in his prime throughout
the show. Once commenting "I'm going for the gold... in the extreme
abuse of Vodka category." He and the band hit every note even though
Cornell was sometimes visibly staggering from the effects of his 'gold
medal chase'. The crowd, at least where I was, were very uptight.
About midway through the set and spurred by the thundering opening of
'My Wave', the crowd seemed to lossen up. A couple of crowd surfers
appeared. Renching renditions of 'Ty Cobb', 'Drawing Flies' and
'Rusty Cage' which even seemed to surpass the album renditions, proved
to me that SG is one of the most talented bands in existence. I'll
try to post the setlist from memory soon. What a show....

Ohhh, sure, it *always* the woman's fault.

This whole situation really disturbs me. Not so much that Kim hit a woman
(The sexs are equal, but *hitting?* jeeeeeez Kim), but that he hit someone
at all! No one deserves to be hit. And, especially Kim, being the philosophy
buff, should most of all understand that violence won't change her point
of view. They should have just discussed it, left it at that, and wrote
another song like "She's a Pollitician". I guess a $2,500 6-hour jail
stay is a *sobering* experience. Maybe Kim will have a philosophical
moment of clarity and realize that if you hit someone, maybe your drinking
too much. And if he wasn't drinking, he needs to learn to count to 10.
Maybe Matt can help.

This is not a flame directed towards Kim. Everyone has a breaking point,
but a philosophy major?

Oh, as caryn mentioned about people being hit...
Kim from the breeders... first song lolla 1994 in San Diego with a water

I'm pretty sure that when ordering them through Funky or NMR (where I order
the same posters for work) it's a minimum order of 10 of each design and at
least 2 10 designs.. At least that's the way I understand it to be.

Subject: Off to Texas/Kim's Rage

Howdy y'all,

Don't mind me, I'm just practicing my Texan drawl. I'll be off to Dallas
tomorrow and on Thursday I'll be at Lolla. I'm excited, and looking
forward to seeing all the Main Stage bands. Yet, if the Melvins are
playing at the same time the Ramones are playing I'll just have to catch
the Ramones at a later date. That's kinda shitty putting 2 California
bands on at the same time. Yet, I must remember this Lolla is not known
for it diverse and varied content. I hope they change the schedule (of
the 2nd stage) when they get to SoCal, if not they'll probably be a riot
of some sort.

As for the Kim assault incident, I'm somewhat surprised at the whole
thing. I never say that anyone isn't capable of expressing uncontrolled
emotions, but I guess I expected other members of that band to snap
first. I see the SG rage-reaction scale as follows:

1st - Ben (of course, his behavior has warranted this conclusion)
2nd - Chris (he's always got so much brewing under the surface)
3rd - Kim ( he has been played up to be the more philosophical one, the
one with a certain amount of education, he appears cool, and sarcastic
most of the time)
4th - Matt ( nothing seems to really bother him, he's just seem to like
playing the drums and making really cool music).

The above is strictly my own opinion. Yet, we all know that appearance,
and even behavior can be insignificant and deceiving. Just look what happened
with Bjork (formally of the Sugercubes) in India or Indonesia. Kim probably
said no to talking pictures, the woman probably grabbed him thinking she
could sneak one in and Kim let her have it. I guess the Victorian
lady in my wished he had just taken to picture and left avoided any
further hassle. Yet, the liberated woman in me says, if she was
courageous enough to try to force him into taking the picture, then she
shouldn't have been shocked or dismayed by the outcome.

I know you all will be holding your breath
until Shroomgirl gives her review of the Texas show. Yet, if you need
any conformations (we all know Shroomie can get carried away), I'll be
back online on Monday.

Okay, okay I'll shut up now! Take care.

Gail

i haven't heard anything either, but the end of the tour has changed so
radically that logically (i could be wrong) i don't see how. they're in
washington state on the 30th, then they go to california. i can't see
them coming all the way back up here for the show in vancouver. i would
say that if it's not on the lolla site or on pollstar or on ticketmaster,
at this late date, that it's not going to happen.

gee, aren't these internet search tools wonderful these days?
i found a mifflin in charlotte. i'm not going to post it because i still
think you don't do that (unless it's someone harassing someone), but
anyone here can go to the white pages on the net and find this info too.

i also don't think anything would be served by us doing this, even if kim
is in the right (or even if he's in the wrong!). actually, it could hurt
him.

in kim's defense, however, i will say this: sometimes the most obnoxious
people get backstage. lolla security can be patchy at best, especially
outside of yer major urban areas. (hell, concert security can be patchy
at best, especially if we're talkin' someone dressed as a hootchie
[nothing personal, shroom]). all i'm trying to say is, i have seen people
treat rock stars as cattle, believe it or not, i have seen them berate and
belittle and browbeat and harass and be so fuckin' demanding that *i*
wanted to punch their lights out. some people think that just because
someone's a 'rock star' that they're entitled to a piece of them.

i think that if the person in question was a genuine fan and approached
kim in that spirit and *asked* permission, he would probably said yes.
unless of course he had a really sucky day or thought he looked like shit
or i don't know, got a little tired of little pieces being sucked out of
his soul by people who think they're entitled to it.

anyway, i c ould just see this scenario where this woogirl bimbo got
backstage and she's a friend of the promoter or the guy who owns the venue
or she's <censored> the security crew, so no one is gonna throw her out,
and she just grabs kim out of nowhere and demands that he take a photo
with her... we don't know that he actually hit her, it is 'alleged' after
all (and in north carolina i might even gently venture to suggest that
racism had something to do with it? just a little maybe? <speaking as
someone who's gotten pulled over for speeding in that state more than
once> the cops might have just taken her word for it, and because the band
is on the road and on the move and can't exactly stay and fight things out
without causing major expense to many people, they just bailed kim out and
moved on, leaving susan to deal with it later.

if he really did it? i don't know. he's only human. i wouldn't hate him
or them because of it. if, however, you told me that this was how kim
thayil regularly behaved towards women, i would have a problem. (but this
i SERIOUSLY doubt).

MTV news said the alleged assault took place in the lobby of
Kim's hotel. The 18 year old girl (a member of a wedding
party at the hotel) and her friends were, according to an SG
spokesperson, being belligerent (bitches...ehem, this is my
contribution to the statement). Kim was already in a bad
mood because when he returned from the Lolla performance, he
found that his hotel room had be rummaged through (robbed?).
Kim turned down the photo requests. The bridal hootchies
persisted. His court date is in N.C. in a couple of weeks.
He can get jail time, community service or a fine. -Vikki

I went, I saw, it rocked. Yes ladies, Chris took his shirt off halfway
through the set, sweaty chest glimmering in the spotlight and all of that
stuff. U Am I (or however the hell you spell it) opened up and they just
didn't do anything for me. After about their 5th or 6th song, they would say
thank you Atlanta, and I would say "yes, no more of this shit!" But then they
would come back on and say that after just about every song for the next 7
or 8 songs. Anyway, Chris seemed to be having too much fun, or maybe it was
the Vodka in hand that had something to do with it.

I didn't get to finish my account. Alright, I told you that Chris seemed to
be having too much fun when SG finally got on and all of that but i didn't
tell you about the set list. I didn't right it down so this is just off the
top of my head; and oh yeah, the view really sucked and the cops were a
little more pissed than usual.
It goes something like this:
          Spoonman
          Rusty Cage
        (then some Doors song)
          Fell on Black Days
          Zero Chance
           Let Me Drown
          Pretty Noose
          Ty Cobb
Searching With My Good Eye Closed
            Chris' Black Hole Sun Solo
           Burden in my Hand
           Jesus Christ Pose
           Drawing Flies
           Mailman
             Outshined
             No Attention
( and probably some more stuff that I
forgot to add ) ---Al

Hey.
First off, if you don't want to hear about the shitty venue, skip to
the next paragraph. The Underground was -the worst- place I've ever been
to. After waiting around outside for about an hour (I pity anyone who
waited since the afternoon!!), we were finally let in! I was all ready to
run to the front of the stage and hold on...but I came in to see that the
stage was about 25-30 (more??) feet away from where fans could stand. In
between was literally a pit. Underneath the stage was a fucking mall! Off
to my right hand side was the Gap!!! Sheesh. ((((oh, and I wasn't
impressed by You Am I. I might've liked them better if they came on when
they were supposed to. I mean, I don't mind waiting for SG to come on, but
they were the fucking opening band! Go on on time and the crowd might at
least give you a chance. And I also didn't like them because they were
really cocky..."You're little sister will be singing this song in her room
next year"...like they're the next Alanis...which, by the way, was played
over the sound system before the opening band...and not even just one song;
it was, like, 4! That just blew me away. Why would anyone think that the
SG crowd would enjoy that?!)
Anyway, the only good reason for the stage being far away was that
the crowd wasn't violent (except for some old, drunk fogies who decided to
"mosh"). Therefore, no band members got pissed at audience members because
they couldn't even see us...Chris said something like, I hope you're all
having a good time because I can't see you!
It was almost like they wanted to come over to where the fans were.
At one point, Chris got off the stage area and stood against a railing, but
he was still only about 2 inches tall from where I was (as close as anyone
could possibly be). Ben even looked bored! At times, he just wandered
around near Matt and the back of the stage.
The set list was identical to the other ones that people posted.
I'm not an instrument expert, so I will only comment on Chris's
voice: great? wonderful? No, those words don't do it justice. Let's just
say that when he wrenched out certain lyrics (like the "come on..." part of
Spoonman...he was growling...it was great), I had an ear-to-ear smile on my
face.
Like I said, the crowd was calm (at least in my area). I attribute
that to being so damn far away from the band, even duing Ty Cobb, etc.
Um, comments on clothing: let's just say that I'm glad Chris isn't
going w/ the baggy look. Most of the time, it makes me want to throw up
when I see a guy in tight jeans,,,but not in Chris's case!
That's all for now
bye

SOUNDGARDEN REPRESENTATIVE RESPONDS TO REPORTS OF EVENTS IN NORTH CAROLINA

SEATTLE, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A representative from the rock group
Soundgarden described the series of events which resulted in the
arrest and release of lead guitarist Kim Thayil Saturday, July 20th in
North Carolina, following the band's performance at the Lollapalooza
show held at the Rockingham Dragway:

"Kim had returned to his hotel at about 1:00 in the morning to find
the door to his room ajar and personal effects missing. He was very
upset at what appeared to be a break-in and headed to the lobby to
discuss the matter with the front desk.

"As he stood at the house phone in the lobby speaking to his manager
to inform her of the situation, he was harassed verbally by
belligerent members of a wedding party who appeared inebriated. Kim
ignored them and attempted to return to his room. As he passed them
walking toward the elevator, they simultaneously insulted him and
insisted on taking his photograph. He requested that they not take his
picture, but then a young man took the photo anyway.

"Kim grabbed the disposable camera from the young man and threw
it. The group rushed him and accelerated their verbal abuse. While
attempting to get away from the crowd, Kim quickly swatted at the face
of one of the members of the group. Kim deeply regrets his actions and
losing his composure as a response to the group's provocations."

well, now that we know the whole story (and this seems like the
whole story to me) we can keep our faith and trust in kim. I'm very happy
to hear that the incident wasn't really kim's fault. it is sad that the
situation had to come to violence, but I know that sometimes people can do
things under stressful conditions that they wouldn't normally do. I know
what it is like to have someone break into your home (in this case kim's
hotel room), and the emotions you feel are not entirely on the objective
and rational side of the fence. having said that, I'm also glad to know
that kim regrets what he did. with that, I can still see him in the same
way as I always have: a cool guy, who has no obvious bad side and has a
great love for music.

I just hope the chick in charlotte and her boyfriend (?)
appreciate what they have done, and that kim is not shouldered with an
unfair amount of blame when the matter gets to it's hearing. that would,
quite plainly, suck.

No, these particular people were in their 30s. And I didn't say that
everyone over the age of 29 was ruining the show. It was just a queer group
of people that were acting like assholes. Believe me, if it had been young

From: LAWNMOWER MAN <wrighton@wam.umd.edu>
Subject: Odd stuff

Hey everyone,
I'm glad to hear that Lolla was so good this last time for
Soundgarden, even with the Kim incident. I do agree with a lot of
people about Soundgarden's behavior. I think they knew what they were
getting into with Lollapolooza. Chris himself said on MTV that the only
reason that they were doing it was because Metallica was. Plus, whenever
you put yourself and your work out in the open for public scrutiny, you
are taking a big chance. That's why I respect musicians so much. I
marched in core type bands for a number of years, and I know all about
how it feels when people don't like you, and you have put so much effort
into something. I also know how it feels to have people worship you.
Face it, musicians take a big chance, and they have to be prepared for
any outcome. The music reflects their souls, and it's easy to see where
they could take things personally, but they need to be ready for it.
Certain things you do are just plain taking a big risk. Savatage has
produced two rock operas (Streets and Dead Winter Dead) and Blackie
Lawless of W.A.S.P. produced one (The Crimson Idol). A rock opera is a
huge risk, and it can end your career if you don't sell enough records to
make your label resign you. Doing Lollapolooza is also a big risk
because there are so many bands there, and chances are, people aren't
there to specifically see you. And they can be quite rude. Soundgarden
knew that, and the chance to tour with Metallica was something that they
didn't want to pass up. They knew the crowd would have a lot of jerks,
and they knew a lot of people would be there to see Metallica. So, like
I read before, I also feel a little sorry for them, but I respect them
for sticking their neck out in the first place, and I think they need to
act like the men they are and keep sticking their neck out and keep doing
their job, because in the end, it's the music that matters. They are
touching many people in many ways, and if they lose focus and let the
music slip and their behavior take over, they are losing. They are a
great band and need to keep that image up. And I think they will. In
any case, I am pulling for them. They aren't naive, and this is what
they chose to do. Good luck, Soundgarden.

To Carolyn Hanel.....great post. We might like them a lot, but they are
still human, and no better than any of us. Why is it cool to be a jerk?
They will come out of the tour having grown, and they will survive and be
better for it. :)

Subject: LA Lollapalooza

Is anyone going to the Irvine Lollapalooza show and happen to live in the area?
If possible, can someone let me know of a few decent hotel/motel that are in
the vicinity.
Iam unfamiliar with that area and need some help. Any suggestions would be
greatly
appreciated. (feel free to e-mail me privately)

By the way, what is Undernet HRCing? or whatever.....
