Subject: sg, metallica and kim in jail

first of all, before we jump to conclusions, we have no idea what
transpired and why kim is in jail. i mean, someone could have been
being an asshole to another fan, or kim could have stepped in to break up
a fight, or who knows what. or yes, of course, he could ahve lost his
temper. but until we hear from a reliable source, let's give the man the
benefit of the doubt.

as to carolyn's comments about ben's crowd taunting, i dunno. if they
have been taking huge amounts of shit on an almost daily basis from a
rude, disrespectful audience, i dunno. i'd get pissed off too. they're
not superhuman... they are very human... and yes, they very much wanted to
do this tour. i think they wanted to do it not realizing fully that the
majority of the audience would be what they are.

was this stupid? yes. could almost any one on this list have told them
what they were in for? yes. however, i disagree with carolyn's comment
that because the audience isn't 'idolising' them, they're going to act
like a bunch of brats. well, i'm sorry to generalise here, but that's the
only kind of behavior your average drunken mullethead is going to
understand. and two, i don't think they want to be idolised; in fact, i
think they'd enjoy the challenge of winning an audience over. but when
it's an audience full of people who wanna do nothing more than fuck around
during your set and throw shit at you, well, i'd lose my temper mighty
quick. didn't someone say that someone threw a vinyl record on stage
which splintered and hit matt in the face?? wanna bet that wasn't the
first time on lolla that someone in the band got hit with something? i
don't think sg would give a flying fuck if 75% of the audience went and
sat at the second stage or off in the food court during their set if they
were playing to 25% of the audience that was interested, and if not
interested, at least not devoted to fucking them up!

when i go see a band, and there's an opening act or another act on the
bill, if i don't like them, my choices are to leave the show room, go to
th back, or if i'm at the front, just stand there and wait. ya know?
whatever. not fling shit at the band. not scream abuse at them. be
polite and stand there.

i don't idolise them for screaming insults. i feel sorry for them because
they really wanted to do this and it's turned out pretty sucky. i do
blame them for not bothering to do their homework, though.

just my $.02.

Subject: Life After Lolla.....

Morning guys,

I just got up and wanted to get my review in as fast as I could. So here it
is:

Ok, we *did* get a camera in, so as soon as film is developed, I guess I can
see if Seth will put them on the page. Screaming Trees, Ramones and RATM were
all very good. During Rage's set, I had the pleasure of spotting the band on
a platform to the left of the stage, watching the set. Needless to say, I
missed the rest of Rage's set and watched Chris do various things until Rage
was over. Ok, so then we moved down until we were 30-45 feet away from the
stage and watched their crew set up. We saw Matt and Kim talking to techs but
never saw Chris and Ben until they were on. The set list was the same as it's
been throughout the tour:
Spooman
Searching
Let Me Drown
Pretty Noose
Burden
My Wave
Ty Cobb
FOBD
Rusty Cage
BHS
Outshined
Mailman
JCP

The best two songs by far were Ty Cobb (big surprise) and JCP, both of which
got most of the audience moving. Amazingly, Ben was really *happy* for our
show--no kicking lights, screaming and cussing or walking offstage. I had
been nervous the whole day because I had seen 40 bazillion Metallica shirts
and 4, yes *4* SG ones. But as far as I could tell, the people down front
during their set were indeed SG fans!!!!! And there wasn't the usual bottles
on the stage routine.

They didn't do anything out of the ordinary, but it was awesome just the
same. I can't remember word for word what Mr. Cornell said, but here's what
I've got:

- --"It's beautiful country here."
- --"It's finally fucking raining!" (It rained for one song during the
beginning and then poured towards the end.)
After PN, he looks out over the audience, waves at us and yells, "Hi you!"
- --"I want to dedicate this next song to one of my personal heroes, Johnny
Cash." (Rusty Cage)
- --"You all can sing along to this next song if you want, it's ok if you don't
know the words. Because I don't know what they mean anyway and I wrote them
myself." (BHS--everyone left and he did it by hinself with his guitar and the
entire audience sang along. It would have been cool except this stupid bimbo
woo girl got on her boyfriend's shoulder's and completely blocked my view for
the next two songs. All I could see was his hairline.)
- --"This is about killing a man, killing a man, a fucked man. (Mailman)

CHRIS--changed guitars six times. Wore a whitish/grey shirt that had black
edging on the collar and sleeves. Tight, black Levi's with his workboots. No
jewelry except for his silver hoop earrings.
MATT--White shirt and black pants. I couldn't see what shoes. His drum kit
and the stage for that matter didn't boast any logo of theirs.
BEN--White tshirt and black leather pants.
KIM--Black backwards baseball cap with his Tool shirt and black jeans.

They all seemed to be in a pretty good mood. And Ben was *very* active, much
more than I had expected him to be. Kim was smiling most of the time and Matt
was drumming his heart out.

Alrighty Shroom, this one's for you: He stripped himself of his shirt between
My Wave and Ty Cobb (you want me to tell you how he took it off? <g>). And
from then on out, we could all see that perfect, sweaty chest the rest of the
show. Ok, I know Seth is hating this, so we'll meet on AOL tonight and I'll
give you all the details, k?

If I've forgotten anything, I'm sure Chas can fill you in. But I'm gonna go
eat breakfast now. Talk to you guys later.

~Flutter~

PS-I had a few ppl ask about the SOMMS shirt I had on, but never ran into any
other list members.

Why am I asking that stupid question? Well, I read an article in the

to compare my sound to -- a band like Soundgarden. To me they're the

Subject: review, part one

I managed to get up close enough to be in the second row for Soundgarden.

Soundgarden walked out. They were greeted by an awesome applause. The
first song was of course "spoonman." At the end of the first line, Ben
said "happy birthday Christopher" right in rythm with the song. Awesome.
They went on to bang out "spoonman" while the crowd up front was yelling
right along.

Next was "Searchin with my good eye closed." Not particularly popular
among the crowd. But Chris was totally into it. At the beggining, Ben was
jumping around, Gumby style. At the soft part in the middle, Chris's
voice was perfect, "stop, you're trying to bruise my mind....." It sent
chills down my spine.

"let me drown" followed. Chris was screaching banshee style and made it
feel he was transferring his excitment to us. Chris is a
total-fucking-Godhead. He even carried out the screaches past normal
distance..... just totally awesome.

"pretty noose" was met with an exciting round of applause. Even though i
hate alterna-poseurs, it just felt awesome to have the crowd singing
along, word for word. Kim's solo was right on. If i could play like that,
i wouldn't care about getting excited on stage either....

"burden" was next i believe. God. I love this song even more now... I've
never heard Chris sing so full and so fucking full of emotion as well. "i
left her in the sand... just a burden in my hand!" The band was just
having a great time, and so was the crowd.

if memory serves correctly, "black hole sun" was next. It was epic to say
the least. Chris looked like a God on stage by himself. Chris sang as if
everyone he knew just died, and we were going to be the people he said
bye to. Chris looked stoic, like someone who had gone up against the
masses, and was not beating them, but rather calming them with song,
before he drove the stake thru our hearts for being merciless ourselves.
The chant of the crowd was excitingly eerie, like it was our last song,
before we joined Chris in the search for peace among the dead.

the band came back out and started into "rusty cage." With its punk
themes, the crowd obliged the music by going full on. The best part had
to be the crunching riff part at the end. Chris's voice was still in full
swing.... totally amazing.

next, they ripped the crowd into a frenzy with "ty cobb." The beat was
unrelenting. People coming over my head at all angles. And Chris was
soaking in the energy, running and jumping all over the stage. Ben
accompanied Chris with the "fuck you all" part. And he was yelling his
bloody lungs out. But it wasn't out of anger, it was just the pure energy
of the song, and the energy he was getting from the crowd. And if Ben
wasn't yelling into the mic, he was jumping around like a mad man. matt
was going crazy behind the kit, beat for beat... he was perfect.

i think "my wave" was next. Another song for chris to yell alot on. And
he did. Chris was totally into. Some of it had to be a very appreciative
crowd. There were lots of Soundgarden fans around me. The vibe was chilling.

somewhere, the played "mailman." It was just to fucking awesome. Chris
had never sounded so good.

and they played "Fell on black days" somewhere to. I like this song...
but it just doesn't fit into the large arena concert setting in my humble
opinion.

i think "outshined" was next. Well, i think most of the crowd up front
knew this one because they fucking tore it up. Kim showed a few signs of
enthusiasm for this song. Chris was just totally into, like the song had
taken on knew meaning right there. Ben was dancing around, enjoying the
crowd.

they closed with "no attention". IN-FUCKIN-CREDIBLE!!! Ben was going
crazy. And so was the crowd. Chris voice was still sounding fresh, and he
sounded like he meant every word he was singing! This made the show for
me... The ending part was awesome. Chris was stomping around like a man
on a mission.

more in next post...

We *do* have an IRC channel -- #somms -- but few people ever use it,
and though it is accessible via Undernet, it is not registered. How
about we just register this one and meet there next week sometime?
It'll be a way to celebrate the list's first birthday.

I only suggest #somms because that was the original plan many months
ago, and because I believe (though I don't remember right now) the
official Soundgarden "chat room" that was set up sometime after #somms
uses #soundgarden (though not on Undernet).

It would be great if you registered the address -- you can definitely
use my email address (saperl@mit.edu) and nick (saperl) to vouch for
it.

the crowd....

I hope metallica doesn't come back around for a while :) I hope the lolla
organizers
get there shit together next year and have a more diverse line up.
Truthfully.. it was a metallica concert, with lots of bands opening.

there were quite a few people who knew Screaming Trees's songs.. but i
don't think its necessary to get a bunch of military rejects and start a
stampeding mosh/death pit while mark lanegan is singing....

i ventured over to the second stage to catch the end of Satchel.
Interesting group. Very diverse, but good blend of heavy rock/blues.
sorta like temple of the dog and mother love bone (RIP)

The melvins were next. Can these guys pound out a beat that weights in
like George Foreman or what!?!? they actually attracted a good crowd too.
people were really into them. I know they played "at the stake", and and
another song off of "stoner witch." I'm pretty sure they played something
off of "houdini" and they played a few new songs. They are definetly an
act worth catching... only if you don't want to see the Ramones.

i did see the end of the Ramones set. They sounded awesome. I just wish
they didn't play the same time the Melvins did.... They did sound like
they were hurrying through their songs, if there is such a thing for the
ramones ;)

Rage against the machine was good if you like them. I don't. But they did
whip the crowd into a frenzy. They had a good clear sound as well. i
guess they are a pretty good live act if you like 'em.

read part one for soundgarden info

metallica. i had already seen them twice. well, the crowd was certainly
up for it. i wasn't too impressed. They seemed to be playing flat,
uninspired. The giutars weren't textured right, everything sounded like
it could have come off the new album, "load." Lars's drumming was
awesome if you like dragging 4/4 beats. Yes, thats sarcasm. i just wasn't
impressed.

happy, but very sunburned,
jerm

I downloaded a shareware audio program called Gold Wave from
http://web.cs.mun.ca/~chris3/goldwave/
That is really great for recording from CDs, and it plays .WAV, .AU, .AIFF,
.VOC and many other kinds of audio files. The only bad thing is that after
every 150 commands you have to close the program and then re-open it. This
isn't nearly as bad as a lot of ways that programs try to get you to register.

Anyway I recorded the beginning of Bootcamp as a .WAV file and used the
program to filter out a lot of the bass (Sorry Ben) and make it much easier
to hear the words. I don't think it is Ross Perot, but they are definitely
talking about taxes. It is probably just some radio talk show host since
Chris said he just recorded off the radio. (It would be funny if it ended
up being Mike Seigel -- Seattle Joke)

By any means it is 825 kbs and if anyone is interested I could try attaching
it to an E-Mail, although I don't really have any idea how long it would
take (don't worry, I wouldn't send it to the list) or if you wanted to send
me a SASE and a 3.5 floppy disk I could send it to you. (Make sure the disk
fits in the Envelope and put 2 stamps on it) I could probably find
something to put on the space left on the disk too.

I was on Undernet IRCing recently and I typed:

/join #soundgarden

Only to find that there was no such channel and I had just created it!
Now, this, fellow Soundgardeners is an outrage, how can the greatest
band on the planet possibly have no channel on IRC? I promptly applied
to Undernet for a form to start up a new channel. Now I've got my
form, all filled in, except for two things. The channel must be open
and have people using it before I can get a bot put in and I need ten
IRC nicknames and e-mail addresses to vouch for it. All you've gotta
do is go on IRC whenever you're on the net and type /join
#soundgarden. Then just minimize the window and run off and do
whatever the hell you want. This'll help keep the channel open until
Undernet put a bot in it. E-mail me if you're interested.

No, it is not still possible to order shirts, as far as I know. I
imagine that there will be another chance to order shirts sometime in

someone other than Nothingman.

I'm working on the necessary scripts that will automate the updating
of the low, high, and average prices each time a new price is
submitted. I can't promise anything, because I'm also trying to finish
another special feature for the site this week, but I will try to get

personally i do not get these bands who have hissy fits about cameras. i
had a waterproof disposable wrenched out of my hands at a pearl jam show

Thayil Accused of Assault

Rockingham, NC (AP) -- Kim Thayil is a little camera shy.

The lead guitarist for Soundgarden apparently didn't want his picture
taken with a young fan and, according to her, broke her friend's camera
and slapped her after they exchanged words, The Charlotte Observer
reported.

Thayil was arrested early Sunday after the rock group performed at the
Lollapalooza concert. he was released on $2,500 bond after he ws charged
with assaulting Heather Mifflin of Charlotte and causing damage to
property, Mecklenburg County sheriff's deputies said.

Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" earned a hard-rock performance Grammy this
year.

sorry carolyn, but I think that ben's taunting is ok, if not
somewhat valid. and caryn seems to have hit the nail right on the head. I
remember reading an article where chris said that he would rather have the
audience either love him or hate him. what would really be burning up the
band (imho) is the apparent ambivalence shown by the crowd at some shows.
if ben was really angry with how the crows was reacting (throwing shit and
being general wits), then you can only expect him to give a little in
return. I can't imagine ben swallowing that kind of stuff.

as for the band not knowing what they were in for on the tour, I
think that they would have had a fairly good idea of what the atmosphere
was going to be like carolyn. let's face it, they aren't babes in the
woods when it comes to things musical. this is a band who delayed their
move to a major label because they didn't feel that they were ready for
it. how many other bands could claim to have made the same decision? so I
think it can be safely assumed that they have their heads screwed on
fairly well.

it would be sad if the lollapalooza festival turned into the
metallica u.s tour. I don't think that soundgarden would have really seen
it that way. you would think that the crowd might be a little more
open-minded, especially with bands like the screaming trees and rage
against the machine playing. but it seems that 75% of the audience is a
metallica fan, which is something (all that "metallica is the best band in
the world" stuff aside) the band couldn't have counted on, or even guessed
at. I don't think any other lolla's have been quite so directed towards
one band. at least I can take consolation in the fact that when the band
gets here, I won't have to contend for position with 35000 other people
(who are there for some other band) during the show.

Hello all.

Finally saw the new video the other day. It's.....well......OK. Visually
stunning, but rather dull. It needed something...... you know, like a few
things thrown in to make their trek through the desert interesting. (REM -
Losing My Religion - perfect example that a video can be both visually
beautiful AND interesting.) Do you ever look at videos today and say to
yourself - "If they would just let ME have a shot at this...". Aaaaaaahh.
(Shroom, we're talkin MUSIC videos, not porno flicks, Ok? Ok.) Now Pretty
Noose, although not quite perfect, was definitely on the right track. A few
more band scenes, and it was there. A couple of things on BIMH: I
read/heard (can't keep track) Chris Cornelius say recently that as far as SG
videos/directors go, he was only satisfied with one or two of the videos
they've made. When pushed, he admitted to liking Howard Greenhaugh (BHS),
and that's about it. At the time, I wondered, well...what about Fell On
Black Days? That video seems more their style, and he didn't mention it.
Hmmmm. Then lo and behold, look who directed BIMH - Jake Scott! He
directed FOBD as well, so I guess they DID like him. Jake Scott,
incidentally, is the son of Ridley Scott (director - Alien, Thelma & Louise,
Blade Runner) and the nephew of Tony Scott (director - True Romance, Top Gun,
Crimson Tide), and is getting ready to direct his first feature - "The Gun".
(Yeah, I'm a movie fanatic too).

Went to Lolla in West Palm Beach. The show was excellent. Set list went
like this:

Spoonman, Searching, Let Me Drown, PN, BIMH, My Wave, Ty Cobb, FOBD, Rusty
Cage, BHS, Outshined, Mailman, and Drawing Flies.

Chris wore a grey (form fitting-tucked in!) t-shirt and black jeans. Kim -
black t-shirt, blue jeans, Ben - white button-up, black leather pants,
couldn't see what Matt was wearing. Chris, who hardly said two words, took
off his shirt right around Ty Cobb; Ben was well behaved throughout (good
boy!); Kim was his usual chillin self; and Matt was awesome. The crowd
wasn't all that bad either.

My favorite part was how they ended BHS - Chris as we know plays it alone,
and that was OK, but when he gets to the end: "Hang my head, drown my fear,
till you all just disappear...", the band had snuck back on stage by this
point, so you expect them all to chime in "BLACK HOLE SUN, Won't you come"
but instead they go right into Outshined. No pause, no nothing. AWESOME.
:-)

Also, I got all excited when they ended with Drawing Flies :-) (love this
song!), until after the first verse when Chris' mic died :-( There he was,
singing his little heart out, and you couldn't even hear him! Hey - you
think he was just fakin' us out? Maybe his voice was tired by this point, or
maybe he said "why did I pick THIS song to end with....too many
words.....I'll just make pretend....". So that was kind of a downer. But
hey, got to hear the instrumental version of Drawing Flies anyway!

That's my babbling for today. Hope I didn't bore you.

The key words in this release being "according to her." For all we

Okay, I propose that we meet on #somms on Sunday night at 10pm EDT. I
