I'm about 2 weeks behind so deal w/my late post. I'm sure you have
covered this topic throughly, but I thought I'd drudge it up again.
This is in regards to the ludicrous query about Chris/AIDS. I,
along w/most other people was stupefied by this question. Had you tired all
other avenues of discussion to get on to such a subject? If so you have way
too much free time on your hands.
Anyone who answered yes to this question is insane, ergo, rendering
them insane. Mentally-incapacitated being the opportive word.

One other thing, all you obsessed people who watch the Sonic's games
just to catch a glimpse of any given person, watch the Sonics for the
Sonics. In no way shape or form are SG and the Sonics related. The only
thing associated to the two is the city.
--Too bad they didn't go all the way. Jordan should have never
returned.

Well now that I got that out.

I just saw the Burden in My Hand Video on Empty V and I like it. It doesn't
hurt that Burden is my favorite song off DotU. At the beginning I thought
it would be kinda lame, just the guys walking through the ever appropiate
desert, but it started to get cool during the storm. I really like how the
lightning goes w/ the drum beat.

Well, Just as I predicted, Lolla won't come to Mexico

Hey guys, Well, either my last few unburnt brain cells have rolled
over

Subject: You Say It's Your Birthday...*tomorrow*
From: seth <saperl@MIT.EDU>

Well, the folk at ATN have proven themselves to be complete morons
once again. They somehow decided that today, July 19, is Chris
Cornell's birthday. Someone -- or, for that matter, a lot of people --
should email them and tell them what's what.

The good news, however, is that the segment about Chris Cornell is
actually interesting, instead of the drivel they usually provide for
their daily birthday section.

Written by our very own Justin Nicholls (Blind/Blight Dog), here it
is:

Chris Cornell, one-time cook, prolific songwriter and lead singer of
Soundgarden, was born on this day in 1964. A Seattle native, Cornell
moved through a number of local bands before finally settling with
Soundgarden, the oddest being the Centre for Disease Control Boys,
with whom he played drums amongst the bales of hay which were strewn
about the stage. One of their songs was titled "Who We Hating Now,
Mr. Reagan?" Soundgarden are one of the most important rock bands to
emerge from the Northwest, fusing metal and punk into the sound known
as grunge. Under Sub Pop guru Bruce Pavitt's warcry of "Total Fucking
Godhead," the band's first offering, 1988's Screaming Life EP,
showcased the groups signature crushing guitars and pounding
rhythms. Ultramega Ok, the group's first album, was released by Greg
Ginn's innovative SST label. The metalic Louder Than Love followed in
1989. It was around this time that Cornell began to control his
soaring vocals, and despite the departure of bassist Hiro Yamamoto,
the band began to hit their stride. In 1991, just as the Seattle music
scene grew to monstrous proportions, Soundgarden released third
Badmotorfinger. Then came the critically acclaimed
mega-smashSuperunknown, which included such songs as the hypnotic
"Black Hole Sun," the melancholy of "Fell On Black Days"and the pure
bombast of "Fourth of July" illustrating the band's desire to not be
branded one-trick ponies.

Surprisingly, one of Cornell's most defining moments can be found
outside his work with Soundgarden on the Temple Of The Dog album
(1990), on which he sings, plays guitar and banjo, and is backed ably
by Soundgarden drum-master Matt Cameron and most of the then-fledgling
Pearl Jam crew. Free of company pressures and market hype, this
tribute to the memory of former Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood
allowed Cornell to move more freely, and contains some of his best
songs, among them his duet with Eddie Vedder on the stunning "Hunger
Strike. "

Cornell and bandmates Cameron, Kim Thayil and Ben Shepherd released
their fifth full-length album, Down On The Upside, earlier this year,
rode Harleys and shot pool for the Frank Kozik-directed video of the
album's first single Pretty Noose and are currently co-headlining the
Lollapalooza tour with Metallica. Also born today are Michael Anthony
(Van Halen), Allen Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Brain May (Queen).

um, the band. the profit margin for merchandise is HUGE for bands. some
indie bands make shitloads of money off the tshirts they sell at shows,
and sometimes it's the only way they can keep going. there are all sorts
of barriers to selling stuff at shows (some venues demand a percentage of
your profit, or that your tshirts are the same price as the other bands
you're playing with, etc) so mail order is a good way for the band to have
a steady stream of income at all times.

in fact, nowadays many bands on tour are just breaking even with ticket
prices vs. what it costs to tour nowadays, and rely on tshirt etc sales to
make some $$. from what i heard, it ws the only way pearl jam broke even
on last year's disaster-tour after the cancellation expenses, etc.

Don't be upset with Nothingman. And for goodness sakes don't be mad at
me, I just got here. He's short on funds and can't afford his internet
access at the moment. He has the postage money in an account in the
bank, so the shirts are coming. He just needs to box them up. I've got
nothing to do with it, but he said people were getting anxious and said
he was going to send them out soon. Didn't mean to stir you up. I
thought perhaps you people would be glad to welcome another SG fan and
actually know your shirts were coming.

It isn't a mail order catalogue. It's a catalogue to order stuff from
Brockum. So it sells stuff that'll later be sold in retail. The band can't
be getting that much from stuff sold in retail because there's a mark up
from the time you order it from the company to the time it gets to retail,
and Brockum must be making money off of it, too.

I snipped the best excerpts... The entire interview is at: =

     http://www.rocknet.com/may96/soundgar.html Enjoy. -Vikki :)
     ------------------------------------------------------------
Rocknet (May 1996) -Interview conducted by Sheila Ren=E9 =

     =

SR: You know how to play a lot of instruments. Didn't you =

start out playing drums? Do you ever miss it? =

     =

CC: Yeah, I did. I still play drums every once in awhile, =

but it's a hard instrument, especially when it comes to =

making a record. The drummer has to be the guide. If the =

guitar screws up you can go back in and if the singer messes =

up or changes his mind about the vocals, he can go back in. =

The drummer has to play the song really well from beginning =

to end. His playing will last forever and once it's done, =

it's done. That's pretty hard. I played in bands for years =

and did a lot of live performing but have never made any =

     records on drums.
     =

SR: Any leftover songs on this album?
     =

CC: We had two finished that didn't end up on the album. =

They were supposed to be on it, but we were mastering and =

trying to sequence. It was really hard to sequence as it =

was and with the other two songs that would have made 18 =

songs. It's almost impossible to do that because when it =

comes to sequencing you try to tell a story from beginning =

to end. It should sound like a performance while the moods =

change. It's like programming a radio station in a way, =

where all the transitions make sense and you're taking the =

listener through the different moods. You can't go back =

because that mood has already happened. =

     =

SR: Are you getting nervous about your first live TV show?
     =

CC: I started getting nervous about that a long time ago. =

I'm less nervous now than I was two months ago. It was that =

when I agreed to do it, I questioned why I had said yes, =

then, a period of thinking about it and now... I know it's =

really happening. No point in being nervous now. =

     =

SR: You never know what Jim Carrey will do.
     =

CC: That's true. He's the real reason why we ended up doing =

"Saturday Night Live". He had expressed serious interest in =

us. Apparently to the point of saying that it was 'part of =

the deal.' If we didn't play, he might not host. The first =

time I heard that I though it was just the SNL organization =

giving our record label a blow job or something, trying to =

get us to play. We'd been offered the show several times =

and we turned it down. He's supposedly really into our =

band. You never know when that happens to people. We know =

it'll be a great show because he's so damn funny. If we are =

going to do it ever in our career, now is the time. =

     =

SR: I was wandering around your Website today and checked =

out the contest to name the site. =

     =

CC: I don't keep up with that. We have an official and an =

unofficial site. Matt pays attention to the Websites. He =

was online recently, thanking some people for something and =

right after that some fake Matt Camerons got on and started =

spreading a lot of bullshit. =

     =

SR: I've keep my vinyl up and accessible with a good needle. =

I even have my old 78 rpm changer. =

     =

CC: Good for you. I haven't actually heard our record on =

vinyl yet but we went to great pains this time. We actually =

mastered specifically for vinyl because the CD is obviously =

like a digital master. On our last album the vinyl was =

actually pressed from a digital master so it didn't really =

sound like vinyl. This time we remastered for analog so =

it'll be direct from analog. =

     =

SR: Were you terribly uncomfortable at the recent Grammy =

     Award Show? =

     =

     CC: I don't know. It's just a strange subject. It's almost =

as if the music industry is patting itself on the back in a =

way. This was the seventh Grammy nomination for us and had =

we won one for our first nomination I would have had a =

really cool attitude about it because it would have meant =

that the people who were actually voting were paying =

attention to music for music's sake as opposed to some other =

reason. I was happy that we were nominated because it was =

an independent record company and it was a low-profile =

record. We didn't win a Grammy until we'd sold several =

millions and it seems that what sells a lot is what wins, =

even though the record may or may not be any good, but that =

seems to be the requirement. I'm not critical of the people =

who work in the music industry, and I appreciate the Grammy. =

(But) to me it's their party and it's not really mine. =

It's not for the musicians. It has more to do with the =

industry. You can tell after a Grammy period all the record =

labels and artists who won a bunch take out full-page ads in =

the trades gloating. That's fine. That's what they do, =

they sell records and they work really hard to develop =

careers. If they're into it, I'm not going to be =

disrespectful, but I'd hate for anyone to think that it's =

something that was a necessity for me or the rest of the =

band, or that it was a benchmark to us of legitimacy for us =

because it's not. It doesn't really matter that much to us. =

It seems like it's for someone else. I'd never get up and =

say that. If I was totally not into it, the best thing to =

do is to not show up. Maybe ten years from now I'll reflect =

and say "wow, that happened and it was pretty unusual. Not =

every kid on the block gets to go up and pick up a Grammy =

Award." It's just one more thing to take the focus away =

from what we like to do, which is to write music and make =

records and try not to think about anything whether it's how =

many records we sell or what people think of us. For us, I =

think the key to success for being a band and always making =

good records is always going to be forgetting about =

everything else outside our own little band. =

     =

SR: I think your success has always come from you always =

doing what pleases you. What music you like. =

     =

CC: Sure, and I'm a big fan of music. I buy hundreds of =

CDs. I'm not the kind of guy who calls his record label to =

request some comps. I spend a lot of money on discs and I =

don't think I would ever want a band or songwriter to think =

about me. It's what he liked last time or this is what I =

think he'll like this time. I want somebody who knows where =

they're coming from to be doing something they like. =

     =

SR: Two of my favorite songs on this album are "Blow Up the =

Outside World" and "Tighter and Tighter." =

     =

CC: "Tighter and Tighter" was actually written around the =

same time as "Black Hole Sun." In fact, I did a demo with =

four songs on it to play for the band. "Black Hole Sun," =

"Sounds Like Days," "Tighter and Tighter" and a song called =

"Anxious." We blew off "Anxious" entirely and recorded =

"Tighter and Tighter" for the last record. It was the last =

song we did. It was number 16 and we ran out of studio =

time. We had the rhythm tracks done and it was just needing =

vocals and my guitar solos. We just ran out of time. It =

was falling flat anyway. I changed the arrangement a little =

     bit.
     =

SR: Is that you talking on the intro of "Boot Camp?" =

     =

CC: I had some old, cheap pedal effect going into the =

amplifier and it picked up the radio and it was really loud. =

So I just lifted the thing off and found a spot in the room =

where it picked it up the best and we just ran a tape on it. =

     =

SR: I love the industrial-tinges on "Overfloater." =

     =

CC: That is kinda that, isn't it? =

     =

SR: On "Applebite," are you using a special mic there? =

     =

CC: I'm singing through a guitar pedal. This whole record =

     is very low-tech. =

     =

SR: I read about you making wallets out of duct tape. I =

realize everyone needs something to fall back on.
     =

CC: If we could figure out a way to do it, we'd probably =

sell them on Lollapalooza. It's labor intensive. You have =

to figure out a system where you measure the strips and =

count how many strips it's supposed to be. One guy could =

cut the tape and another guy assembling. Right now, it takes =

me about two hours to make one. You don't find this quality =

on the street. If I could make a duct tape juicer or go to =

hand luggage, maybe we might have something there. =

Howdy,

I saw a little tidbit today on Soundgarden, which I believe was MTV news or
something. It was Chris being interviewed, and one of the questions was, "Are
you going to do a tour after Lollapaloosa?" They said, after Europe, they
will do a short tour, from November to December, or around Christmas time.
This came right from the horses mouth. Um, right from Chris' mouth I mean.

well, i got one that i'm going to sign as from SOMMS@MIT.EDU... its a
"from us" card. description: There are a bunch of cartoon people playing
in a field w/ mountains in the background (kinda like white versions of
the 'BHS' mountains). Anyway, the text at the top says "If it were up to
us, your birthday would be a national holiday!"... open it, it says
"'cause we sure would like to have another day off every year!.... Happy
birthday from all of us"

nice touch i think. I'm going to print out the b-day wishes from the site
and stick it in there. So, if you want, stick something on there, and
i'll get it very early tommorow morning.

My birthday card to Chris has the characters Opus & Bill on the cover.
Caption:"For your birthday, we've been trying to write a poem that
describes the real you..." Open it, Opus (the penguin) says "but what
rhymes with 'rigormortis'?... then the little purple fella says "bigger
tortoise?".. kinda funny i think :)
