I went to the local music shop today, and saw SG Live at the Armory
for $50!....That is VERY high for me, but if it is really worth it I
think I could cutback on my spending for a while to make up for
it. But, IS it REALLY worth it? Did they put on a good show? I'm
wondering just how good it is to warrant that kinda money, and I
realize it is a 2 cd set...

Sorry, I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask this question, but any
advice is appreciated....

I'm not admitting to anything, of course, but this one really hit home.
Soundgarden is having an adverse effect on the productivity of the
American work force! I wonder, is this happening in other countries as
well? Soon they will control the planet!

Sorry guys, this isn't a complete review. I've got a mind like a sieve,
so this is just more impressions of the show...

Screaming Trees rocked. I think everything they played was off Sweet
Oblivion and Dust, but it was an excellent set. I had a friend with me
who has heard some of their more "commercial" stuff (i.e. the songs that
actually get airplay on large stations), and he was really impressed.

Soundgarden was truly a religeous experience. God, what musicians.
After having to suffer through an hour of the Wu Tang Clan, everone was
ready to tear it up with SG, and they didn't disappoint. The set list
was pretty similar to what others have already reported. They opened
with Spoonman and closed with Jesus Christ Pose. In between, we heard
Searching, Rusty Cage, Outshined, My Wave, FOBD (Chris only), Let Me
Drown, Mailman, Pretty Noose, Ty Cobb, and Burden (not in this order.
Hey, I already said I've got a mind like a sieve. It's all I can do to
stare at the albums and say "Yeah, they played that.") Jamie, we did
plenty of screaming, singing, and jamming on our air guitars. If not by
the end of SG's set, then by the middle of the Metallica set, everyone
around us probably thought we were stoned out of our minds...

That leaves Metallica. Now I am not the world's biggest Metallica fan.
And given the choice of listening to SG or Metallica, I will always pick
SG, but Metallica absolutely blew the roof off the place. They play so
hard and fast and intense, it's amazing. We got to yell "Die!" during
Creeping Death, which was cool, but not as cool as at Woodstock when we
got to yell "Die!" with 400,000 other people. The rest of the set was
just more screaming and jammin on our air guitars while Metallica cranked
out Four Horsemen, One, and Master of Puppets among others. (It's an SG
list, I won't bore you with the details...)

Finally, James Hetrick closed the show by saying, "We'll see you in the
fall, indoors." So obviously they're gonna tour. But I also noticed an
SG shirt that read "Soundgarden 96/97". Does this mean there's a tour in
the works for SG as well? Let's hope.

Subject: Lolla Report: Charlestown, West Virginia
From: mamasan@juno.com (Sunil Mohanty)

It took me nearly four hours, but I managed to get down to Charlestown
and see SG play an excellent set at Lollapalooza! I was stuck in Fairfax,
VA all morning and nearly all afternoon doing some clerical business shit
and sacrificed seeing the Ramones and Screaming Trees in the process
until finally arriving at the festival around 6:15.

Soundgarden's setlist was the exact same as the one from when they
played the Syracuse lolla: spoonman, searching, drown, noose, burden, my
wave, ty cobb, FOBD, rusty cage, black hole sun, outshined, mailman,
jesus christ pose.

A good overall performance, the only thing that ticked me off was the
fact that all the people who came to see metallica were just standing
there like motionless dolls. They didn't even get into black hole sun!

The extended ending in Rusty Cage where Chris holds the last note of the
song and improv's some lyrics was cool.
Spoonman was heavier than the album version, Outshined was very upbeat
and the only time in which Kim really interacted with the crowd, and
Jesus Christ Pose was pure heaven. But highlight of the set had to be Ty
Cobb. The song was sort of indirectly dedicated to all the inactive
metallica fags in the crowd. Ben was EXTREMELY pissed off he stepped up
to the mic and yelled out : "...White trash motherfuckers!! Fuckin'
buttcheek motherfuckers!!" At the end of the song, Ben once again let his
discontent be known to the metallica crowd: "You've come to see
metallica, don't ya white fuck!!!" Aside from Ben's taunting to the
crowd, the band really didn't move around on stage. Kim stood his ground
and other than the occasional nod he drifted off into space. I couldn't
see Matt's face because the crash cymbal blocked my view from the right
side of the stage. Ben, who usually lurches all over the stage with his
bass dragging down to his knees, but even he was pretty quiet in terms of
motion.

Another metallifuck moment was when Chris introduced Mailman: "This song
is about sleepy society fuckin' with the wrong guy.." (Some metallica
dick yelled "Fuck you" at Chris)

I can't wait for SG to finally do a headlining tour in the fall/winter.
The vibe at the lolla gig was cool, but you could tell SG is definitely
fed up to being touted as "the opening act for Metallica".

Okay.. This is what I got out of the mumblings at the beginning of Boot
Camp. I think it's either a speech from a senator (or some other
American-type politician or an analyst):
"We're gonna increase taxes, increase taxes for the increased people coming
into retirement. That will give us a centrepiece for income tax index
[somethings I didn't get] which means that when people come back next year
there'll be even less and even less the year after that and if inflation
keep sgoing up that tax will be in such good meaning we can't think of
losing it. [music] I'll tell you this, inflation is a grave digger. It
causes this which leads to that which can stop giving meaning to this which
will lead to extinction."
That's what I got by turning off the left speaker and only listening to the
right (I figured that most of the music was coming out of the left
speaker). It doesn't make sense to me in some places, so I assume some of
the things are wrong, but that's what I heard.

Can anyone tell me if Ty Cobb has been released in Australia because this
guy I know there said he thinks he's heard it (I told him the lyrics) but
he's not a big SG fan so he isn't sure.

Has anyone seen BiMH on Much yet? I saw Pretty Noose a total of 2 times on
it.. They're so wrapped up in playing Alanis Morrisette and R&B crap that
they play a good video about once a day.. <sigh>

That's all for now...

Erin.

I just heard a good SG anecdote:
I live & work in seattle. Someone in my company knows I like SG, and told
me that back in the late 80's, he played in a band that opened up for SG at
a local club called the offramp. This was the same time that U2 released
"Rattle & Hum". So, in a mocking gesture, SG made pamphlets printed out
for this show saying: "Soundgarden: Paddle my Bum". Then chris cornell
threw them out to the audience. That would be a nice trinket to have.

that how i felt and thats what Ben was screaming in to the mic. 2 hr
drive, Ramones were good , not as good as in Ohio, Cj ( bass) was
pissed, called the crowd white trash pot smoking peices of shit and
then left. Wu tang was 10 guys on stage saying fuck every 10 seconds
and playing off the applause from the song about rolling joints and
sex. screaming trees rocked, like in Ohio thyre set got better as it
went on. I was really in their set when someone came up from behind
me crowd surfing and hit me in the back of the head . i lOVE crowd
surfing but now its a bunch of guys keeping the girls up to molesty
them or going up themselves to show off( yeah! im the shit! yeah look
at ME!) so i didnt crowd surf even though i was dying to during Sg's
set.

SG CONTENTD<L:D'c,s
so anyway i was up front for the Ramones and the pit was heav but you
had room to move , i did my dancing and had fun, so i got into
position at the front right part of the stage really close. Sg came
out and the crowd went crazy, it was cool until searching was played ,
then it sucked, drunk high moshers al pressed against each other ,
no room to move , if yoyu fell you were dead. i fgot out of there
quick getting pissed off the whole time. during let me drown i went
crazy with rage , i had moved back a little and i couldnt take that
shit anymore.Ben was piised off like me the entire show, he didnt
lurch AT ALL he stood there in leather pants and a black shirt
playing the bass walking around, never smiled , just flicked people
off and made pot smoking sinals, crazy( loco) and money hand symbols.
i was on his side so i watched him alot, he was PIIISSSSSED.
by the way the set was trhe same one ( i think) as the one Seth
talked about for randalls island
    spoon
searching
let me drown
pretty noose
burden
ty cobb
my wave
outshined
rusty cage
black days
black hole
mailman
last was jesus christ pose
i cant remember the rest if there were any. wu tang took a long time
with their "set". they had a little extended part in rusty cage where
chris( i think) sang some lyrics from tighter and tighter. he didnt
talk much in between songs except to talk about them like" this songs
about: doing whatever you want as long as it doesnt invlove me or
:the silent person that society tramles on" something to that point.
Before Ty Cobb , Ben went to his mic and yelled so loud and pissed
off that you could hardly hear him cracking his vocal chords. it wen
to this point: you pot smoking white trash drunk, ignorant, asshole
fuckers fuck fuck fuck. then he sang " fuck you all" during that song.
i cpmletely felt the same way as him about them so i again lost
control( which is a good thing) and flicked off the moshers right in
front of me and jumped up and down.
then Ben said " you came to see Metallica didnt you!" They started
JCP over some feedback and a drumroll and after it Chris walked off
stage with MAtt and Kim let a note of feedback ring LOUD and BEn
stood there for a minute alone hitting the strings giving the
audience a staredown. he left and gave the international pot smokins
sign .
ok i vented my frustration, if you read all of this then THANK YOU. I
am going to the North Carolina Lolla this saturday , hopefully Be

From: ASDrum@aol.com
Subject: Entertainment Weekly/You know you're obsessed when....

Got my latest issue of Entertainment Weekly Saturday - Denzel Washington on
the cover. Interesting Lolla/HORDE article - I'll just give you the
Soundgarden stuff.

The article STARTS OUT 'Soundgarden's Kim Thayil is comparing notes on Kansas
City's finer hotels with a fellow traveler. "Apparently we have some
Christian convention at ours" says the long-tressed guitarist, seeming to
resign himself to a quiet night of room service on the eve of their tour
kickoff.'

Then further down the article: 'Hitting the stage an hour before dusk with an
ironic "Waiting for the Sun", Soundgarden don't dance around the pre-tour
hype. "Welcome to Lollapalooza with a big cock on it! M-m-m-manly," Chris
Cornell teases the throng. The Seattle quartet then goes on to belie that
jokiness with a fine-tuned, alternately soaring and grinding set that proves
heaviness and elegance need not be mutually exclusive. Back in the band's
trailer, the singer is still waxing impish. Asked if the camaderie of these
bands might preclude the sort of backstage intrigue that went on between Hole
and Sonic Youth, Cornell begs to differ. "No, it's gonna be a huge soap
opera. (***SHROOM - PAY ATTENTION***) I think there's gonna be a lot of
actual gay sex" he confides, knocking his cigarette ashes onto a glass table,
sipping on spring water. "Just to do it, just to prove everybody wrong. And
we're gonna do a lot of Ecstasy."

It continues: 'But seriously, folks.... "We don't have these superfucking
huge egos where we're gonna be worried what [Smashing Pumpkins'] Billy Corgan
thinks, or if he played a little too long before we went on," Cornell says.
 "Who cares?"

"The fun thing about this set," says Thayil, "is that if we go over 10 or 15
minutes..."

"...then they have to play shorter," concludes Cornell, nodding toward
Hetfield, who has just stepped into the trailer. "We ain't gonna," the
Metallica frontman warns. "We can't play short - it's impossible! Our intro
tape's 90 minutes long."

Former Lollapalooza co-organizer Perry Farrell, who has made no secret of his
dissatisfaction with the tour's current direction, comes in for some ribbing
from this crew. As far as Cornell is concerned, things were just as heavy
the last time his band did Lollapalooza, back in '92 when the fest was in its
second year. "I think maybe Perry Farrell wants to promote his other tour,
whatever that is - that space-tour thing" Cornell says, dismissing Farrell's
new and improved concept, the ENIT Festival, bringing music and cosmic
consciousness to a field near you later this summer. "So he decides to slam
his old project...and eventually he did start getting tired of it. But the
guy was negotiating for a percentage of parking; it's not like he's some sort
of New Age guru." Adds Thayil: "I figure testosterone's a good alternative
to pseudoscience and bad religion."'

Ever the comedians. Good article, no pictures of Soundgarden though.

Sorry, but I can't resist:

YOU KNOW YOU'RE OBSESSED WITH SOUNDGARDEN WHEN:

- - - You go out and buy a computer so you can play with the new Alive in the
Superunknown CD-ROM you bought.

- - - You have Soundgarden posters in every room of your house, including over
the washer/dryer and in the garage.....but your husband makes you take the
one in the bathroon down because he doesn't like the band looking at him when
he goes to the bathroom.

- - - You're going to Lolla (tomorrow!!!!) even though you've been dying with
this flu thing for three and a half weeks, hacking away, you're on all kinds
of antibiotics that are making you sick, and you need an inhaler just to
breathe.

- - - You buy several copies of DOTU when it first comes out - one for the car,
one for the house, one for the husband, one for the brother......and you
explain to your husband who's yelling at you for spending all this money that
you're doing your part to make sure this album does well on the charts.

- - - Your boss comes into your cube to have a serious discussion about a
potential $3,000,000 loan to a new client, and you tell him to wait a minute
while you start dialing the radio station cuz they're playing Pretty Noose
and you have to be caller number 10 to win a chance to fly to Seattle and
meet Soundgarden as a guest of Rockline.

- - - One of your fellow bank employees who doesn't have a clue about music
calls you on the phone at 9:00pm to tell you that she's watching a figure
skating competition, and one of the guys is skating to Black Hole Sun.

- - - Every time you go to a record collectors show, one of the vendors eagerly
awaits you to proudly show you all the Soundgarden stuff he's dug up for you
(even though I already have everything he manages to find).

- - - The manager of a local record store calls you every time they get a new
Soundgarden t-shirt, cd single, poster, etc. in and then holds it for you.

- - - You spend $18 for a Soundgarden t-shirt that'll fit your 5 year old
nephew (he loves SG btw) when you know he'll probably outgrow it in a year.

- - - You write to the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and order up their video
newcomer package, at the low low price of $30, because you are absolutely
fascinated with this city. (It's cool because to this day I STILL keep
getting all kinds of stuff from Seattle realtors, banks, movers, etc.)

- - - The decor of your cube at work includes several SG stickers, the Flower
postcard, and a picture of Chris & Kim accepting their 1994 MTV best heavy
metal video award. The car has two SG pics on the dash, and the husband's
truck has a SG air freshener.

There. Do you see? I am SICK SICK SICK. But that's ok, because ever since
I found this list last Christmas, I've seen that there are LOTS of us sick
puppies out there.

I have to end with this line, because something about it (even though we're
not sure on the end?!) is just so beautiful....if I could paint I'd draw it:

"the moon is glued to a picture of heaven and all the pigs have God"

C. Cornell

OH MY GOD - BIMH just came on MTV - is this fucking freaky or what?!!!

Ciao babies........
