Subject: Chris on sex and stuff...

I transcribed this from an interview that took place in 1993. It was on
those PJ Starr compilation tapes. Bear with me, I'm slightly unsober right
now. For you stupid people, here is an explanation of who's talking:
C is Chris, K is Kim, B is Ben, and Interviewer is some guy who has no face.

C... I'd like to not, umm, have any sexual impulses. And not have to sleep.
K... That'd be great.
C... 'Cuz that would save like alot of time and, like umm, it would save alot
of energy spent on things that aren't as important as other things.
B... Eunich man!
C... Yah, like guarding a bridge. No, you know like things I'd rather do,
like writing music, and playing music, and hiding from the rest of the world.
 That would be fun.
Interviewer... Do you find that you think about sex alot?
C... Yah, all the time! Every day!!
K... Enough to distract you.
C... Which is really irratating. It's distracting. It also makes people
like totally compromise their judgement and do like really stupid things.
And uh, it's a battle to not do that. Not let that happen.
Interviewer... Isn't that sort of fun in a way as well?
C... I guess not! <laughs>

I thought it was rather interesting. Any speculations on it? E-mail
me...

Hi there!

Does anyone on the list in the UK have the Reading '95 bootleg of SG's set ?
And more to the point, can I get a copy somehow ?

Btw, anyone noticed that Chris Cornell seems to have a thing for 'hidden'
lyrics ? Evidence :- The verse in Burden IMH, the line in FOBD when he sings
'Hands are for shaking etc..', and I'm sure there's some on Badmotorfinger
too...

Just a thought,
Cheers,

It's a shame no one involved with the movie thought of it. Go see the
movie. It kicks ass. And sing 4th to yourself during the credits. It's
a beautiful fit!

You know how most people jump up and leave at the end of a movie when the
credits are rolling, not me....I have this thing about watching them. It
was great to sit in an empty theater with the ID4 credits rolling and
hum SG's 4th. Of course the person I was with didn't know jackshit about
SG and was annoyed that he had to stand there and wait for me. Like Greg I
kept thinking, wouldn't it be great to have SG's 4th coming at you - loud.

I do recommend you see the movie, it has great special effects, the actors
really fit their roles, and it can deaden your senses (which right now is
good for me), and stay during the credits - sing your heart out..

Jamie

BTW: I also saw Twister last weekend... If you saw the movie, you know the
first time they chase the tornado and each car has a different song
playing.. I thought the spacy guy (one playing Deep Purple) should have
had "Rusty Cage" on. It would have been a better fit.

Subject: Randall's Island Lolla - 7/11/96

I was at the Randall's Island Lolla yesterday (I'll post a
review as soon as possible. Good set, but only 55 minutes.)
I'm going again today after work. I recommend we (who's
going?) meet AFTER SG play. They hit the stage at exactly
8pm. They will finish no later than 9pm. Once your inside,
you'll walk past the carnival. You'll make a left turn
through many concession stands and finally end up at the 2nd
and 3rd stages which are set up with only a few feet and a
large balloon gorilla between them. Left of these stages is
the entrance to Downing Stadium and the Main stage. As you
begin to head into the stadium, BEFORE you hit any of the
concession stands (on your right), and grass and trees (on
your left), again, BEFORE you come to any of this, you will
see a few tall black lamp posts. The meeting place my
friends and I determined yesterday, was the ONLY pole that
actually had a lamp on top. Seth, I'll try to get to the
stadium by 6pm. If I'm not at the flag post at 6pm I'll
meet you at 9pm. 'kay? If anyone wants to try to meet up
with me before the SG set, obviously try the lamp post at
6pm or look for me at the front of the stage wearing a lime
green short sleeve shirt and powder blue, light weight
jeans. My picture is in the member directory (I have long
brown curly hair). It was EXTREMELY easy to get front row
for SG last night! If you need more details, my work phone
     is 1(800)223-2440 x7152. -Vikki

I was thinking the exact same thing about ID4! The song and the movie
were perfect for each other!

I heard it in the wind
And I saw it in the sky.
I thought it was the end.
I thought it was the 4th of July.

And that doesn't just go for the lyrics either, but the heavy riffs,
etc... I wonder if they were either ignorant (they didn't know about the
song) or just stupid (they didn't want the song) when they put the movie
soundtrack together. What is on the soundtrack anyway? It's not listed
on the back of the CD.

You know I really liked hearing Chris said this (maybe my state of mind needed
it). But I have been enjoying the SG tapes Steven made for me and there are
scenes where the crowd is throwing water bottles at the band..

Why do people throw shit at the stage and the bands.. It has always been that
way. I have seen band members get hit with firecrackers and heavy glass
bottles.. What is the mentality for this stupid act. If you don't like the
song, the band, or just this performance - LEAVE, BOO, anything except
throwing something. Worst case scenario you are a louse shot and hit some
body in the crowd. I have seen a girl's hair catch fire, because someone toss
a firecracker at the stage and it hit her instead.

No wonder Ben gets freaked, I would too if I was on stage and some idiot belts
me with an object. Why would anyone want to hit Ben with something, he puts
on such a great show. I love watching him get spastic.

Questions: At the end of every show that I have seen recorded, Kim leaves the
stage last and he always does that crazy thing with his guitar. Now all you
guitar players don't get crazy on me here, I'll try to explain it the best I
can. He gets one high, loud note to keep going even after he walks away.. I
know it has something to do with feedback - put how does he keep it going so
long and is it considered a hard thing to do? Also, you that have been to
Lolla this year, is he still doing this? Is this a Soundgarden trademark?

two lines before "Hold the potion up. Tear your shadow down.

That would be a really cool idea but not in this movie. Your heart's in the
right place, but if the band ever did that they would lose some of my
respect because the movie's really cheesy. I don't know that's what I
thought, and I'm one of the few. The special effects were really cool and
they were worth the three bucks I payed at bargain price, but the script was
HORRIBLE and I found myself sitting there with my jaw wide open as the
audience cheered every little one-liner. Man, Will Smith said "Shit!" and
people cheered. My guess is that when the aliens came the first people they
killed were the writers of this movie.

Hope you don't mind my fuming about this movie, I'm just really pissed off
about it because I hear so many people comparing it to Star Wars and some
actually think it's BETTER. Come on, People!!! You insult the makers of
those fine movies by comparing the two.

I'll probably catch some flames for this, but I'm holding my fire
extinguisher just in case.

Metallica. Also, they're not happy with the parking situation. Their
bus has to be parked behind the FOUR Metallica buses. The deejays were
cool here, going off a little and saying Metallica can't even walk in
SG's shoes and that their heads are so big each member has to have
their own tour bus to hold all their...."stuff."

I was a little nervous, thinking they were gonna say something like SG
were so disgusted they weren't gonna play the rest of the Lolla tour.
I would have been so disappointed if, after finally getting psyched up
about going, they would cancel.

Side note in same news clip: a back up singer for Smashing Pumpkins
was found dead, suspected drug overdose. They're supposed to play
Seattle August 15, but it's presumed this would not change their plans.

A comment on the flashing, hootchie, woo girl types. Yeah, that girl
at the Showbox totally and absolutely disgusted me! She was doing all
these contortions throughout the entire show and every time I was
looking that way, checking out Kim or whatever, there she was waving
and acting like she was the star and she had the best seat and all the
rest of us were poor losers or something. Her attitude and behavior
was revolting and I tried to avoid looking that way, just because of
her and how asinine and ludicrous I thought she was being. Really, she
was *that* bad.

It's Friday, gonna be in the 90's here in Western Washington. Amazing
weather for us! I'm getting pretty excited for Lolla now, listening to
DOTU last night and some songs just gave me the chills, even in our
little heatwave. And Caryn, let me know what you hear on people
wanting to meet up at the Gorge!

Later!

Bonnie

(the deejays are still trashing Metallica and their 4 buses, and SG
only has one and they are a *far better* band! Can't tell these are
hometown guys;)

THEN WHY THE FUCK DID THEY AGREE TO DO THIS TOUR????!!!!!

what the HELL did they THINK the audience would be like? didn't they
learn anything from the GNR experience??? i thought they did. i refuse
to believe that the guys in sg are that out of touch with what is going
on that they would not know what a typical metallica audience is like!

the other thing is, don't they realize that this is going to change what
the typical *soundgarden* audience is like in future? they're getting
exposed to the whole metallica crowd, some of whom will probably get
turned onto sg and then start going to their shows, turning it into a
testsosterone-fest....

contracturally i don't think they can do that, pissed or no. they are #2
on the bill, and ticketbuyers could legitmately ask for refunds if sg
wasn't on the bill, claiming they only bought tickets to see them. i
know i would! ;-)

This is from Reuter. Earlier report also from Reuter said it was a heroin
overdose. Draw your own conclusions....

NEW YORK (Reuter) -- Police arrested the drummer of the rock band
Smashing Pumpkins and questioned other members Friday after one of the
group's backup members was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in a
hotel room, police said.

A police spokeswoman said the body of keyboard player Jonathan Melvoin,
34, was found at the Regency Hotel on Park Avenue at 4.15 a.m. EDT.

Jimmy Chamberlain, who police say made the emergency call, was charged
with criminal possession of a controlled substance. It was not clear if
the charge was releated to Melvoin's death in any way.

A half-dozen members of the Smashing Pumpkins' touring contingent,
including group leader Billy Corgan, their manager, musicians and stage
hands, were questioned about Melvoin's death.

The group is in the seventh month of a 200-show, yearlong tour that
included venues in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

The group is from Chicago and its lyrics often deal with disconnected
feelings, alienation and confusion.

Its concerts at Madison Square Garden scheduled for Friday and Saturday
nights, and Sunday night at the New Jersey Meadowlands were postponed.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high.

I heard a RUMOR that there may be a Lollapalooser show coming to Reno? Is
that true? Someone mentioned Aug. 2.

Can anyone put my mind to rest...I refuse to get my hopes
up. I really don't think Reno could get its act together that quickly
for a show of that size. I would much prefer a small venue, but I will
settle for the circus atmosphere if I must. Anything to catch them on stage.
(No, not anything to catch a fatal disease from Chris--just kidding.)

If anyone has heard about it or knows for sure that my friend is being a

From: ansel@morgan.com
Subject: Lolla Article & Show Times

This is the SG article from the 'Lollapalooza '96 Magazine'.
     -Vikki :)
     ------------------------------------------------------------
'Down On The Upside' is the title of Soundgarden's fifth
album. Upon listening to the album, rock critics (and other
people with too much time on their hands) may be spending
hours theorizing on a supposed "hidden meaning" of the
title, and using words like "progressing" and "maturing" to
define where the band's heads are at right now.

And the thought of all that drives guitarist Kim Thayil up
the wall. "When I hear that word 'maturing,' I think of it
as meaning 'more marketable.' Does that mean that by
'maturing' you can't be aggressive? Our records are just
broken down into subsets of songs: songs we write, ones we
learn how to play and ones we decide to record. And that
has nothing to do with predicting the style or the direction
of the band at that time. I think there's a certain style
of heaviness in what we do, but it doesn't necessarily have
to be loud, fast and aggressive."

And he's right. 'Down's' sixteen tracks are diverse in
execution and texture. For every laid-back summer-night
groove like the one on "Dusty," there's the maniacal "Ty
Cobb" and "Never The Machine Forever," or the transcendent
"Applebite." It's as diverse as 1994's 'Superunknown',
which made a lot of people's heads swivel at the band's
versatility. And when you consider that Soundgarden's early
audiences consisted of punks, metalheads, black-clad goth
fans as well as the archetypal flannel-clad Seattle grunge
rocker, it's fairly obvious that the band calls the shots,
     and no one else.

Thayil and bandmates Chris Cornell, Ben Shepherd and Matt
Cameron originally played Lollapalooza's second year, and
are the first band to ever play the festival twice. It was
the quartet's wish that the Ramones and Seattle compatriots
the Screaming Trees be invited onto the bill. Thayil thinks
     that the metal-versus-punk dichotomy is a press-generated
     attempt to pigeonhole the event.

"The fans that go to Lollapalooza are generally white 18- to
24-year-olds that tend to have the same social experiences.
What is different is that they exist in different kinds of
subcultures. But they have more in common than everyone
thinks. People don't like us because we're too alternative,
and some people don't like us because we're too metal.
Music means different things to different people. Some
people find it a tertiary thing in their life or even less.
If you want to start calling people sell-outs, grow up," he
     laughs. "And mature.!"
     ------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Who's your favorite Second Stage act?
Kim: "The Melvins. They had a profound effect on the
Seattle music scene. Satchel is the band we'd most likely
     go out drinking with."

Q: Whose tour bus smells the worst?
Kim: "Probably us because we'll have the sweatiest socks
     and the most beer damage."

Q: What's your favorite form of male bonding?
Kim: "Public farting and frequent use of the c-word."

Subject: Overdue Apology

To all of you devoted readers of the digest...I want to clear up
something I said before.

In asking about a possible surprise show in Reno, I ended my post with a
nasty comment to caryn.

Caryn, which most of you know, is one of the most helpful people on the
mailing list. She was not deserving of my unwarranted attack.

I wanted to apologize!

Thanks again for your help--

Subject: Nothingman says...

that the shirts are in his possession and he will begin posting
them soon. Maybe sooner now that he got a phone call straight
from left field.:)
He said that after the artwork problem (that Seth fixed) the shirt
guy got backed up.
He did sound somewhat apologetic, and I believe he was sincere.
He said he was not trying to rip anybody off and I tried to tactfully
explain that people are concerned, but nobody is branding him a thief.
I also asked about his net access and mentioned that some people on the
list were concerned for him, and hoped he would return. He said
he was hopeful he would return soon.
