I have the rusty cage 12" single but not the CD single. Is it that
one where they're all green? The one I have is where the guys are
like drenched in this green light. That's such a cool cover. I
should get it scanned if it's not already.

On another note:
Someone, I think Ray, (if not I'm sorry) said that on the mumbling
heard in Bootcamp, that they heard the words taxes and inflation,
ect. I hear the same stuff. I swear to god that someone (either on
the list or on alt.music.soundgarden) said it was a Ross Perot
speach. Well I kind of think that's right, but um..what I think it is
is Dana Carvey's impression of Perot, when he did those impressions
on SNL. Weird huh? I tried to mess around with the balance on my
speakers and just solo out the mumblings but I couldn't. I got close
though. And I swear it sounds like Dana. Maybe I'm just hearing
things. Oh well,

Subject: Burden interpretations according to me....

Howdy everyone,

Okay, my interpretation for BIMH is as follows:

I think it's about abusive relationships. For example, in the first 4 lines,
it says, "Follow me into the desert/ As thirsty as you are/ Crack a smile and
cut your mouth/ And drown in alcohol." Many times, in abusive relationships,
the victimized individual stays with the malefactor and will do anything to
please them, despite the consequences. Like following someone into the desert
in a thirsty state, it would be detrimental, if not suicidal. And, the
statement of crack a smile and cut your mouth, is moving towards the violent
or abusive nature of such relationships when the person isn't fully pleased.
And of course, alcohol is not only an irritant to the "cut mouth" but an
escape as well.

The Chorus:

"I shot my love today would you cry for me/ I lost my head again would you
lie for me/ I left her in the sand just a burden in my hand/ I lost my head
again would you cry for me." It's pretty clear in the first line, shooting
someone is basically an attempt to either kill them or cause serious injury,
would you cry for me is in some respect asking for gratification. "I lost my
head again" is basically asking for some sort of forgiveness, or an excuse
for the abusive action, and "would you lie for me" is asking them to hide it
for you. It's like when someone who has been battered, says in response to
their injuries, "I fell down the stairs" instead of saying," My husband/wife
beat me." "I left her in the sand" is a reference to the follow me into the
desert line, meaning, he left her in the desert after she followed him there,
because it was too much work for him to try to make things work, or try to be
civil. And the "Burden in my hand" could also mean that the "love" is shown
through the hand in violence, and is tiresome. "I lost my head again would
you cry for me" used again indicates a repeating pattern. Repeating abusive
actions is more often than not the de regle.

"Close your eyes and bow your head/ I need a little sympathy/ Cause fear is
strong and love's for everyone/ Who isn't me." Closing eyes and bowing of the
head is showing trust, respect, and honor. Many bow their heads and close
their eyes when they prey, which would show a reverence to the abusive
partner in this context. "I need a little sympathy" means that the abusor
wants the abusee to be in agreement or harmony with his/her feelings. "Cause
fear is strong and love's for everyone" Fear is a great motivator, it can
drive people to do things they normally wouldn't consider. And "love's for
everyone" is saying, I have a right to be this way, this is for everyone. And
the fact that "Who isn't me" is after the previous verse, shows an
afterthought, or maybe an interjection either on Chris's part, or in the mind
of the abusor. Anyway, it shows that abusive actions really aren't a part of
love, but they happen none the less.

The next lines:

"So kill your health and kill yourself/ And kill everything you love/ And if
you live you can fall to pieces/ And suffer with my ghost." Kill your health
and kill yourself is saying that by being in the abusive relationship you not
only are leading an unhealty lifestyle, but you are going to kill yourself by
doing so. And people in this position often want to kill themselves and
"everything you love." We hear all too often of tortured individuals
committing murder/suicides. They lock themselves and their children in the
garage with the car running, or they show up at home early from work with a
shotgun, and blast away. And we also see that sometimes the person who is
trying to kill everything they love do, but don't succeed in killing
themselves. This just happened here not too long ago and the guy is now up
for sentencing. So they have to live with the "ghosts" or memories of their
dead family or "loved" ones. And in doing so, they literally fall to pieces.

Closing lines:

"Just a burden in my hand/ Just an anchor on my heart/ Just a tumor in my
head/ And I'm in the dark." As previously stated, "burden in my hand" could
mean that the weight of the relationship is carried in the hands that are
used to show abuse. Interestingly, in mining, burden means the earth or rock
to be removed by a charge of explosives. Some who are abusive, often do "blow
up" or "go off" on the other persons involved. "An anchor on my heart" would
mean weighing down ones spirit, or center of emotion. And, "a tumor in my
head" could be very threatening if not taken care of. But the abusive
individual has very low regard for themselves and the others involved, as is
indicated by the "Just" at the begining of each line. "And I'm in the dark"
would symbolize being ignorant to what is happening both on the physical
plane, and the spiritual, or emotional.

This is just my take on the song, but only Chris knows exactly what is meant
by these lyrics. But this is what it means to me, and art has different
meanings to different people. And for a person to actually own a piece of
music, instead of renting it from a plastic disc, it has to have a meaning to
them.

Just a thought,
Aaron

Subject: sg shirts at lolla

The shirts at lolla were generally priced at $23. some guy was selling
one style of shirt outside (not sold inside, leading me to believe he was
an "independent manufacturer") for $15. That one was a general concert
shirt with soundgarden receiving second billing to the M-word (as do all
the other general lolla shirts). I'm pretty sure there were only two
straight soundgarden shirts. One was black with the DOTU cover on it and
a list of tour dates on the back. The other was gray with a black & white
picasso-like, dualistic drawing centered on the front (it looked
familiar, I may have seen it on other sg stuff. anyone know what I'm
talking about?) and tourdates on the back as well. The first one was
boring since I have the cd and don't really need something else with that
picture on it. (I have the digipack, two liner notes, the vinyl, and a
poster . . . I see those silhouettes in my dreams). The second seemed to
tenuously linked to soundgarden to justify the expense, though it was a
cool-looking shirt.

speaking of shirts. What have we decided about nothingman? Are we waiting
for him to reappear? Have we written off that $10-$30 that a lot of us spent?
Perhaps someone who lives near "Friendsville" could pay our man a visit.
Actually, I miss my money a lot less than I miss Nothingman. Hell, he can

Hi all,

First posting, so take it easy on me. I taped most of the MTV Lolla history
thing, it only had a small part about SG, although a shit-load of the bumper
music was from DOTU. The interview segment with Kim & Chris was interesting
but short. The over-all focus was sort of a retrospect, with Nirvana
getting a lot of PR through old clips and news releases.

There were several comments by Lars of Metallica that were surprisingly
intellegent with respect to the alternative elitists who panned the opening
line up as not being alternative enough. I got this impression he was being
cheeky but maybe thats me being cynical.

I just have a bad feeling that our money and sense of trust (here's to

collecting and sending out shirts but he was adament to do it on his own!

HEY FELLOW GEETARISTS...

anybody know the "official" tuning for burden in my hand? i was
playing it in our basement with my jam-buddies the other day...i just
started banging it out by ear in a different key (standard tuning;
E-B-A on the verses with a C-G-D-A change added on for the
chorus--"would you cry for me...") which sounded ok with the exception
of some of the bridges...i just can't figure out a good way to play
those without throwing off my singing.

SO...if anybody knows the tuning for this song and any other info you
can give me (chord shaping, etc.), i would appreciate it...i think i
can figure it out from there...

has anyone read all the lyrics to "burden in my hand"?
the lines go......
"I shot my love today, would you cry for me?"
" I lost my head again would you lie for me?"
" I left her in the sand, just like a burden in my hand "
As I was reading this I thought of something that actually happpened here in
San Diego awhile back.
There was this pro skater, Gator ( mark grabowski<~~~~ spelling?) any how he
lived here in San Diego who I met and was a cousin of a friend of mine. one
night ( as thestory was told to me by my friend) Mark ( gator) had a gotten
into a fight
with his girlfriend and he was pretty upset! I guess the girlfriends best
friend came over to talk to gator and try to act as a mediator between the
two.It didnt work! Gator ended up raping the best friend and in the process
killed her.. so HE FREAKED OUT and put her in his surf board bag and took her
to the desert to bury her...which he did. bury her in the desert
I guess a couple of weeks went by and he finally could'nt take it anymore and
told a priest what he had done. soon after that he was arrested.
that line in the song is too creepy for me...." I left her in the sand, just
like a burden in my hand'
I wonder,(but do seriously doubt it!) if Chris (CORNELL **SHROOM** HAHA)was
writting about this when he wrote the song..apparently he was a skater
himself.

Do not talk to me like a child Caryn. Yes you are right I could have

What I finally hear in the third verse of Burden in My Hand is:

           "follow me into the desert
            as desperate as you are
the moon is glued to a picture of heaven
and all the little *picture* of god"

Listen especially to the *picture* part at 03:26. I definitely can't hear
"*pigs have* god" (maybe I'm a little deaf, but I don't think so) =)

Well, that was my 0.02 cents.

Caryn had asked about the difference in price on the t-shirts that they
sold at the Showbox (thanks again for mine Toni!) and those at Lolla.
It's pretty sad actually, they were pushing the same shirts ("with a
silohuette of the band on the front and a picture of the "Pretty Nice"
single on the back.." hehe)on the phone when I called for ticket price
information, and this lady told me that the shirts were $25. She acted
like it was some great deal if you got this shirt (they only had the
black one) through them, Bass tickets. And I'm sure they would have
added a sales tax on top of that if someone had ordered one. Maybe
another service surcharge too...

No shit, nothingman was a cool shit. He made my fork. I sent him
tapes. I KNOW he wasn't in this to rip us off, I just wish things would
work out differently.

Well the tuning for Burden in my Hand AND pretty noose and one other song on
DOTU that i don't know is... CGCGGE
so basically u drop D tune, then tune the bottom three strings downa step and
then mess with that G string
thats pretty official i guess cuz thats how they play it!

HEY FELLOW GEETARISTS...

anybody know the "official" tuning for burden in my hand? i was
playing it in our basement with my jam-buddies the other day...i just
started banging it out by ear in a different key (standard tuning;

THANX IN ADVANCE...

later...

it's not on seth's page, but it is listed on pollstar, and the tickets
did go on sale here in seattle.

i think bonnie is talking about going, maybe andrea (welcome back
andrea!!) too. chris and i keep throwing it around... and it would be
cool to see devo and the melvins and sg of course... but it's a tuesday,
and is gonna involve two days off of work for us, which is kinda
impossible... i wish it was a weekend or something... it just has the
potential to get VERY expensive... *sigh*

i agree wholeheartily with all of the above. having said that....

well, here's a question... is he still on the list (seth? it's not like
i can send a 'who' command to majordomo, sorry ;-) )?

i know he's communicated with seth a few times -- would you be willing to
share that email address with the list so we can try and find out what is
happening? it's not fair to put you in the middle of this just because
it's your list.

if you don't want to give out the address, would you be willing to
forward our messages onto him?

personally, if i don't hear something soon, the next time i have to go to
the post office, i will file a "no merchandise received" complaint about
my money order. i mean, i don't want to get him into trouble, and i KNOW
how much work this is...but he either needs to get the shirts out, ask
for help, or send our money back, and NOW.

just my $.02.

he never unsubscribed and his email address is the same it's always
been. i believe he gets our mail but is unable to respond due to
problems with his account, or at least that was his excuse the last
time that problem magically cleared up and he emailed me. :)

Jeremy--I will be sending you a birthday card for Chris. Thanks for
trying to get them to him.

while we're being picky... :P the correct title is "A Sound Garden."

and magnuson has one "s." :)

yeah that was me, and you know i don't honestly remember if it was even BMF.
it might have been the 12" outshined. sorry i don't know that much about
official release SG stuff...

but to answer your question it really looked more gold than yellow to me.
i'm sure i will be back up that way in the near future so i will make note
of it. also, ben (timberlake), i will pick up two BMF stickers for you. :)

yes... that colored vinyl is meant to be collected and not played. :)
seriously. colored vinyl is a poorer grade and degrades quickly when
played. someone please correct me if you know more about the subject but i
believe vinyl is made from oil/crude. black vinyl is more durable for
records because it is more refined. when you start adding colors to the mix
it decreases the quality...

hi guys,

shroom and i were talking about chris (who else?). and for those of you
wondering, we *did* discuss the music a little. now aren't you all proud of
us?? good, i knew you would be. anyway, i asked her if she could *actually*
have sex with chris, and in the process, get AIDS, would she do it? and is it
worth it?

and so i'm thinking to myself, "hmm, i'm going to post this to the list
(SORRY seth)." so guys, *ahem* GIRLS, if you could have sex with chris and
get aids in the process, would you???

this oughta be interesting, and reply to ME, not the list!!!

ciao,
