i know everyone's already said everything possible bout the PN
videos, but i gotta say i love the new one... It's so cool to see Alain
from Eleven on the video and then see the band.
When i see a video I like to see the band and not just a buncha
moving pictures that confuse the hell out of me with some devil chick
dancong in the background. I'm sure the director made a goos effort, but
i just really prefer the new vid...just thought i'd cher :)

wow, cool!! can I bring one of these cups to any Lollapalooza or Blind

I mean, I don't actually care about the music or anything, just the beer,
because Soundgarden obviously intended their new album to be a

Subject: interpretations of Burden...

Burden seems to be about a ruined relationship... a guy that's
totally in love with a woman who ends up driving him crazy (i.e.
cheats on him, won't have a relationship with him, whatever)...
take the lines, "there she goes, out in the sunshine, the sun is
mine, the sun is mine..."

I thought this meant that he had everything he wants (even the
sunshine she walks in), except for this girl he loves, so he just
sits and watches her, because she isn't connected to him in
any way...

the next parts, "I left her in the sand, just a burden in my hand",
"I shot my love today, would you cry for me", etc. can be taken
(I think) in two different ways...

a. the situation drives him so crazy that he kills her, which means
that all the song's lyrics are taken literally (like he really shot her
and/or left her in the desert)

b. he gets over her... the lines "I shot my love today..." and "I
left her in the sand..." don't have to be taken literally, it could
mean that he just buried his fellings for her... "shot my love"
could just mean that he mentally pictures her as gone... since
there's no way for him to ever get her, he figures she might as
well be dead...

as for lines like, "follow me into the desert..."
well, deserts aren't known for having a lot of life in them, they're
pretty much desolate... maybe that's what he feels like inside...

other line interpretations...

"...cut your mouth and drown in alcohol" : some people drink
when they're depressed, so...

"...and bow your head, I need a liitle sympathy" : he can't figure
out why she doesn't love him, wants to know the answer...

"kill your health and kill yourself and kill everything you love" :
since he can't be happy, he thinks that no one else should
be, either...

"...if you live you can fall to pieces and suffer with my ghost" :
I think this means he's wishing everyone else's relationships will
fail, and his ghost will haunt them when it happens... the ghost
would be saying, "see, you ended up just like me, hahahaha,
you suck, etc."

"just an anchor on my heart, just a tumor in my head..." :
something that torments him every day that he can't get rid of...

so that's my take on Burden... yeah, it's a little long and probably
way overanalyzes it, but it's one of my favorite songs...

my $0.53,
Outshined

I'm going to the Lolla in Charlestown, West VA on the 16th and heard
hat that under one of the tents they're selling almost every SG CD ever
released including the singles. Did anyone see any BMF CD singles like
Rusty Cage, Jesus Christ Pose, or Outshined? Or were there only singles
from Superunknown available there? I have all the superunknown singles
and most of the BMF b-sides on cassette, but I just want to get my
hands on the BMF ones for collecting purposes. Someone also said
something about the ltd. edition BMF wooden box was there. If anyone
knows the price, please let me know. It probably couldn't be less than
$85.00 (that's how much CD Europe listing says!)
Another question about Lolla that I have is about the t-shirts. The
official web site they showed pictures of the festival tour shirts and
man do they look really shitty! The designs range from butterflies to
hearts and that ringmaster mascot guy. Do they sell any seperate SG
tour T-shirts there and much did they cost?

Thanks and everyone on the list who's going to Charlestown on the
16th...see ya there!!

Subject: record fairs RULE!!!

well friends,

i just had the most AWESOME morning at the record fair!

despite having to get up at 8:30 am on a SUNDAY... and my chronic insomnia
making it so that i didn't get to sleep until well after 3am... it was well
worth my time. at first glance around the room i saw nothing, the same old
tired dealers with the same old tired stuff. but then a few things started
to catch my eye... like the guy with the Mother Love Bone poster displayed
behind his table. he wsa selling posters. i waited semi-patiently for this
woman (who ended up buying a Brad poster and some weird public enemy poster)
to finish looking, and then i started to look.

and hit what i consider the motherlode of the day: an AWESOME original
poster for SG at the vogue in 1991! 'back when about 7 people would go to
see them', said the guy selling the poster. ;-) it's got that weird
multi-armed indian goddess (durga, i think) that's on the 93 winter tour
shirts... (yes seth i will take it to work this week and scan it... you
DEFINITELY don't have this one unless matt gave it to you himself!) got
some other cool silkscreen stuff... afghan whigs and henry rollins.

then i went down a few tables and saw a guy with some other sg stuff...
rusty cage cd single...and then It caught my eye. i never would have even
paid attention to it if i hadn't found out yesterday what it looked like....

yes, ladies and gentlemen... i now own the "Louder than Live" CD!!!!
original packaging... all for only $25!!!

that and two neil young double albums for $5 rounded out my day.... oh, also
got the rolling stone with sg on the cover (i wasn't even here at the time i
don't think)... chris grabbed that one yesterday out from under me at the
other record store (grrr ;-) ). [interesting anecdote: when i got home and
was admiring the magazine cover, i took a look at the label and saw a name
that was kinda-sorta familiar with... pulled out a cd to double check... it
originally belonged to the guitarist for 7 year bitch! weird or what?!]

then we took some friends up to magnusson park to see the soundgarden
sculpture and get some sun and play some frisbee... all the while discussing
alternate SOMMS shirts {we're going to draw these and put them up somewhere
if for no other reason than serious comic value}... anyway, so we get to the
gate to the NOAA property where the sculpture is, chris shows them the map,
and andy goes, "so what is this sculpture REALLY called?"

(silence, while we wait for the penny to drop)
"um, the soundgarden, andy?"
"oh... i thought it was called the magnusson park windchimes or something
like that"
"well, then the name of the band would be 'the magnusson park wind chime
band', now wouldn't it???!"

[alternate shirt design: picture of the sg sculpture on front, with "the
magnusson park wind chime band' on the front, somms@mit.edu on the back]

anyway... just thought i'd share. ;-)

caryn:

I _think_ that the correct title for that sculpture that the band was named
after in Magnusson Park is 'The Sound Garden' & not 'The Soundgarden' but
then again... I've never been to Magnusson Park, or Seattle, or Washington
state or anywhere in the Northwest US for the matter.

Chris (I think you mentioned this):
Was that copy of Bmf on 'gold' vinyl or more of a yellow? I had a yellow
(more yellow than gold) pressing back a few years ago but it was over-played
& ended up getting a hole one day after several playings of Room A 1000 Years
Wide right in the opening bars when Cornell lets out his yell. This also
wiped-out a good deal of Outshined (a bubble formed on side a). Anyway... do
I have a point?

General question:
For those with the RaTYW / HIV Baby Sub Pop single:
I know that Room is an alternate version but is HIV Baby different than the
cut on Born To Choose? I've always been really annoyed by the version on the
compilation & I'm wondering if hunting down the 7" (or is it a 45?) will be
worth it. Well.. I love RaTYW so a different studio version of that song
would be worth it (c:

Oh, & something that was mentioned once that was never answered but I still
wonder about:
HIV Baby from Born To Choose says that Hiro played bass, yet Ben wrote it. I
see it possible that Hiro joined the band to do the bass line for this track
but sorta odd. Does anyone out there know this minor mystery?

Sorry to bother everyone on what seemed to be a SLOW week message-wise. I
guess ya'll were vacationing, watching / firing fireworks (US folks), eating
greasy food (again those nutty US kids), attending record fairs (caryn &
Chris), dancing all over various Lollapalooza venues (thanks to all the
'field reporters'), studying linear notes (Mayor), staring at pictures of
Soundgarden band members (several people & this number seems to be growing
daily now), collecting amusing quotes (Carolyn), translating SOMMS digests /
messages (all the non-speaking listers), watching Independence Day (it set a
new weekday premiere record in the US... also a good movie - an emotional
film believe it or not), working / studying (me), analyzing Burden down to
the punctuation (Outshined (c: ), and maintaining the finest rock band
related mailing list & website that I've laid eyes on (mr. seth).

btw: The Texas Rangers have been in first for the entire season basically so
far (baseball... neat sport for all those that don't know much about it)...
with half a season left we can only pray that they stay in first and fend off
the evil Mariners of Seattle and their goofy Moose on the push scooter. (c:

Ah... this reminds me... One night when I was lying in bed trying to fall
asleep I flipped on the disc player & played Boot Camp & I heard some of what
the background speech was. Where someone heard Michael Jackson I heard words
like inflation, decrease taxes, 500 dollars (which someone mentioned) and
other economic related jargon. This has made me think this song has a much
deeper meaning than peering back at our childhoods or searching for Utopia...
this may have political connotations since the monologue seems to (at least
that's what I'm hearing). The weird this is that I can't really hear much
more of what the speaker is saying anymore... I got lucky once (c:

I wonder if Soundgarden stole the idea of Hand Of God from Bad Religion &
their song
Voice Of God Is Government (from their first full-length lp How Could Hell Be
Any Worse) in which Graffin preaches much as the HoG monologue. Um... if
anyone has this record (which I believe was re-released on lp / cassette / cd
a few years back from Epitaph) give me your thoughts.
